Joseph Gordon-Levitt Joins Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, While He Passes On Guardians Of The Galaxy

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Premium Rush

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a busy man, but thanks to the way Robert Rodriguez & Frank Miller can shoot Sin City – where not all the actors have to be on set at the same time – he’s managed to find time to slot in a role as one of the lead characters in the highly anticipated Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Gordon-Levitt will play Johnny, a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game. Here’s what co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller had to say, “Johnny is a new character in the Sin City world and we are excited for what Joseph will bring to the role.”

Gordon-Levitt commented, “I love how the first movie uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality. Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez.”

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For weaves together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants. Returning cast members include Mickey Rourke as Marv, Jessica Alba as Nancy, Rosario Dawson as Gail, and Jaime King as Goldie/Wendy with new cast members Dennis Haysbert as Manute, and Jamie Chung as Miho. It’s believed the role of Johnny was originally offered to Johnny Depp, who was unable to be part of the film.

This isn’t the only JGL news that’s dropped, as Deadline reports that while reports emerged last week that early talks had begun between the actor and Marvel about the possibility of him taking the lead role of Peter Gunn in Guardians Of The Galaxy, Gordon-Levitt has now passed on the role (which would make it easier for him to play Batman in Justice League is DC decides to go in that direction).

First Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Art Hits, Featuring Crystal McCahill

January 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Sin City was first released in 2005, Robert Rodriguez said he had plans for two sequels in 2006 and 2007. It’s taken him a lot longer than that to get a follow-up going, but now Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is on its way, with an October release already set.

The likes of Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King are all set to return for the sequel, while one of the newcomers is Crystal McCahill, who’s posted a few shots from the set, including what appears to be out first look at artwork from the film (it’s tough to tell if she’s meant to have released the shots, but they’re here now).

There’s no specific info on her character, but the pic makes it look like the former Playboy Playmate is one of the women on Old Town – nearly all of whom are either prostitutes or strippers. Some have suggested she could be Ava, the Dame To Kill For of the title, although that seems unlikely as she has no acting experience – but then the fact she has a poster-style image would suggest she’s a fairly important character. All should be revealed soon.

Dennis Haysbert Joins Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Replacing Michael Clarke Duncan

December 6, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While many of the stars of 2005’s Sin City are set to reprise their roles in the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, sadly one who cannot is Michael Clarke Duncan. He had been set to return as Manute, but tragically passed away in September at the age of 54.

Now THR reports that Dennis Haysbert is in talks to step into the role. Director Robert Rodriguez commented, “Manute is a character that has been part of the heart of the Sin City tales, and the late Michael Clarke Duncan beautifully established that role onscreen. We could not tell the story of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For without Manute and are thrilled to welcome Dennis Haysbert to the cast.”

In the original Sin City, Manute kidnaps Gail (Rosario Dawson), prompting Dwight (Clive Owen) to trade Gail for the head of Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro). The cinematic sequel is based on the first of Frank Miller’s graphic novels, where the hulking bodyguard/chauffeur works for the femme fatale Ava Lord’s husband, Damien Lord.

Mickey Rourke (Marv), Jessica Alba (Nancy), Rosario Dawson (Gail), and Jaime King (Goldie) are all returning for the sequel, with Jamie Chung replacing Devon Aoki as Miho. Production is currently on a break in Austin before resuming full-time in January.

Jaime King And Jamie Chung On For Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

October 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Sin City was released in 2005, we were initially told two sequels were incoming and they’d both arrive within a couple of years. However its only now in 2012 that cameras are finally starting to roll on a second movie, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

With filming starting on Monday, THR also got news that Jaime King will be back in the Sin City world, while Jamie Chung has also joined the cast. King will play Wendy, twin sister of the prostitute Goldie she portrayed in the original. Chung meanwhile will take over from Devon Aoki as the sword-wielding Miho.

Mickey Rourke (Marv), Jessica Alba (Nancy), and Rosario Dawson (Gail) will all reprise their roles from Sin City. However there are apparently still many major roles left to be cast (as it’s all green screen, things can be shot separately, meaning it’s not as important all the cast is there when shooting starts), including Dwight, who was originally played by Clive Owen. Some have suggested the actor is returning, although Dwight undergoes facial reconstructive surgery in this story, and will look like a completely different man. Also yet to be cast is the gambler Johnny, and Ava, originally written for Angelina Jolie.

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are directing from a screenplay they co-wrote with William Monahan. A US release date of October 4th, 2013 has already been set.

Mickey Rourke & Rosario Dawson Back For Sin City 2

April 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week it was confirmed that the long-awaited Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will finally start shooting this summer, after director Robert Rodriguez wraps on another sequel, Machete Kills. The initial said many of the original cast would return, while stopping short of announcing exactly who.

Rodriguez has now been talking to MTV and confirmed that Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson will both be back for the sequel. He says, “We still have to cast. I’m shooting Machete Kills next month, and we go right into Sin City. It might overlap, but we haven’t done any casting yet, except for the people who we know are already in it and returning. A Dame to Kill For, all those people come back. I just had lunch with Mickey [Rourke] this weekend. He’s all excited to come back, but he’s probably the first one. I saw Rosario [Dawson] too. I ran into her for something else, and she’s pumped. They’ve always been excited about doing another one, so that will be fun.”

It has been long rumored that Angelina Jolie may play the title role, although the director revealed he hasn’t reached out to her yet. “I haven’t even gotten to meet with her yet about it or discuss with Frank (Miller) about who we would want to go with or talk to first. That’s a fun process, but that probably won’t happen in the next month.” It’s also true that if the plan is to shoot this summer, Jolie is probably about, as she’s due to start shooting Malifecent in June.

Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For Is Finally A Go!

April 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When Sin City was released in 2005, the stated plan was for two sequels to get made, one in 2006 and one in 2007. However it’s now 2012 and we’re still waiting, with Robert Rodriguez having spent the last seven years teasing the idea of a sequel but many suspecting it would never get made.

That’s just changed though, as Rodriguez and Sin City creator Frank Miller, along with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, have announced that production will commence soon on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

“The first question I am always asked is, ‘When will you make another Sin City?’,” said Robert Rodriguez. “I have wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For will certainly be worth the wait.”

Sin City creator, screenwriter and co-director Frank Miller added, “The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything like it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first.”

The script and details of the film’s story are being kept tightly under wraps, suggesting it may not be based on previously published Miller comics, but casting will begin next week, with many of the original cast expected to return. (Source: Variety)
