Hotel Transylvania Takes September Record At US Box Office

October 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony execs will be smiling today, as while September is usually seen as a bad time to release family films in the US, Hotel Transylvania took a strong $43 million, which isn’t just good for an original animated movie, but is actually the biggest weekend gross any movie has ever taken in September. Indeed the month is normally such a slow time the previous record holder was Sweet Home Alabama, which took $35.6 million on its opening in 2002.

Looper also did well thanks to lots of buzz and great reviews, taking $21 million in its first three days. Although that may not seem a lot for a sci-fi film, it’s actually very good for the sort of cerebral sci-fi the movie deals in. Word of mouth should also ensure it has a long run.

The real overperformer was Pitch Perfect, which may have only reached number six on the chart and $5.2 million, but it did so on only 335 screens, giving it the highest per-screen average of the weekend. It bodes well as the Anna Kendrick movie expands onto more screens over the next few weeks.

The final new entry is Won’t Back Down, which rather flopped as despite the Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis movie opening on 2,550 screens, it took just $2.7 million. That’s the second worst opening ever for a film opening on more than 2,500 screens (indeed many have wondered why it got such a big screen count, considering the minimal marketing push).

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of September 28th-30th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Hotel Transylvania $43.0 $43.0
2 Looper $21.2 $21.2
3 End Of Watch $8.0 $26.1
4 Trouble With The Curve $7.5 $23.7
5 House At The End Of The Street $7.1 $22.2
6 Pitch Perfect $5.2 $5.2
7 Finding Nemo (3D) $4.0 $36.4
8 Resident Evil: Retribution $3.0 $38.7
9 The Master $2.7 $9.6
10 Won’t Back Down $2.7 $2.7

End Of Watch & House At The End Of The Street Tie At Top Of US Box office

September 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally by Monday morning, we know which movie has topped the chart over the weekend, but not so today, as there are three movies which could end up on top when final figures are released later on. Based on estimates, both End Of Watch and House At The End Of The Street took $13 million, while Trouble With The Curve was close behind with $12.7. There’s a chance any of those movie could end up at number one when final figures are tallied.

None of them can be described as a breakout hit, although End Of Watch and Trouble With The Curve certainly won’t be disappointed, as many had wondered whether they’d struggle more than they have.

Dredd however came to earth with a thud, taking $6 million to place sixth on the chart. While the film has had good reviews, it doesn’t seem to have struck a chord with American audiences, which is a shame.

The Master also made its first appearance in the top 10, after breaking records in extremely limited release last week. The film took $5 million as it expanded from five to 788 screens. With ecstatic reviews, it should continue to play well over the next few weeks.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 (based on estimates) for the weekend of September 21st-23rd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 End Of Watch $13.0 $13.0
2 House At The End Of The Street $13.0 $13.0
3 Trouble With The Curve $12.7 $12.7
4 Finding Nemo (3D) $9.4 $29.9
5 Resident Evil: Retribution $6.7 $33.4
6 Dredd $6.3 $6.3
7 The Master $5.0 $6.0
8 The Possession $2.8 $45.6
9 Lawless $2.3 $34.5
10 Paranorman $2.2 $52.5

First Look At Clint Eastwood In Trouble With The Curve

July 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When he made Gran Torino, Clint Eastwood suggested that would be his last on-screen role, but now he’s coming back with Trouble With The Curve, which is longtime producer Robert Lorenz is directing. The first images from the film have now been released via EW, which feature Eastwood alongside Amy Adam and Justine Timberlake.

Clint Eastwood stars as a veteran baseball scout, who attempts to bond with his daughter (Adams) by taking her on his last recruiting trip. Director Robert Lorenz had to say about the character, “He gets his chance to prove whether he still has value as a scout and as a dad. They’re having trouble communicating. They always have, and now they’ve come to a point in the relationship where it’s either going to change or it’s not. He needs a little help, and she decides it’s worth the effort.”

John Goodman Having Trouble With The Curve

February 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As the cast continues to grow, Trouble With The Curve gets ever more enticing. Now Variety reports that the always excellent John Goodman has joined Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams,Matthew Lillard and Justin Timberlake in the movie. The film will be the directorial debut of longtime Eastwood producer Robert Lorenz.

The film follows Eastwood character, a longtime pro baseball scout who is starting to lose his sight. He decides to take his daughter (Amy Adams) along on a scouting trip to Atlanta to eye a hot new recruit. John Goodman will play Pete Klein, another scout and longtime friend of Clint Eastwood’s character, who still believes in his ability to spot new talent.

It isn’t clear when production will start, but it’ll have to be fairly soon as a US release date of September 28th has already been set.

Justin Timberlake Having Trouble With The Curve

February 1, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s getting to the point where you could almost forget Justin Timberlake is a pop star, as he spends so much of his time trying to be a movie star. The likes of The Social Network have helped give him some acting cred, but starring opposite Clint Eastwood should get him a lot more.

Deadline reports that he’s just signed on to Trouble With The Curve, which will see Eastwood coming out of acting retirement (Gran Torino was supposed to be his last trip in front of a camera). The film follows an aging baseball scout (Eastwood) who’s slowly losing his vision, but goes on a road trip with his adult daughter (Amy Adams) to look for new players in Atlanta.

Timberlake is set to play a former pitcher-turned-scout, who competes against Eastwood for a new signing. However, just to throw an extra spanner in the works, he also falls for Adams.

Robert Lorenz, whose produced many of Clint’s films, will make his directing debut with the movie. An autumn release is being eyed for the movie.

Matthew Lillard Set To Have Trouble With The Curve

January 18, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If all goes well for director Robert Lorenz, this time next year we’ll be wondering if Trouble With The Curve will win any Oscars. We’re a long way from that though, as they’ve got to make the movie first. Clint Eastwood has agreed to come out of acting retirement for the movie, and Amy Adams is attached to star too. Now TheWrap reports a couple more actors are close to signing.

Actor Matthew Lillard, who recently appeared in The Descendants, is in negotiations, as is newcomer Joe Massingill. The film follows Clint Eastwood’s character, a professional baseball scout who is losing his eyesight. He brings his daughter along on a scouting trip to Atlanta, so he can evaluate a young prospect. Matthew Lillard will play another scout in the drama.

Robert Lorenz, who’s been Eastwood’s assistant director and fellow producer for years, is directing Trouble with the Curve from a screenplay by Randy Brown. It’ll be his directorial debut.

Amy Adams May Have Trouble With The Curve

November 17, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago it was revealed that while Clint Eastwood had said Gran Torino would probably be his final trip in front of the camera, he’s planning one more on-screen role with Trouble With The Curve. At the time it seemed Sandra Bullock was likely to star alongside him. However a deal couldn’t be worked out (largely due to scheduling) and so Variety reports that the role has been offered to Amy Adams.

There are still some things to work out with Adams, who also has a few scheduling problems (mainly with various Man Of Steel jobs she has to do), but at the moment its appears she’s doing her best to ensure everything gets sorted. After all, who wouldn’t want to star alongside Clint, and this may be the very last time it’s possible to do that?

Bullock May Have Trouble With the Curve

October 22, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Last week we found out that while Clint Eastwood had said Gran Torino would be his last trip in front of the camera, he was in talks to star in the baseball drama Trouble With The Curve, the directorial debut of frequent Eastwood collaborator Robert Lorenz. Now it appears he may have some star company in the movie, as Twitch reports that Sandra Bullock is in talks to sign on.

The script, by Randy Brown, follows an aging baseball scout who’s slowly losing his vision, but goes on a road trip with his adult daughter to look for new players in Atlanta. As this may well be Eastwood’s last film, the role of the daughter is undoubtedly a coveted one and so it’s a bit of a no-brainer for Bullock to agree to it. She may be best known for her comedic roles, but she’s actually better at drama, as evidenced by her Oscar win for The Blind Side.

The no news on when Trouble With The Curve might start shooting, but it should be fairly soon, as Eastwood is currently free because Beyonce’s pregnancy has delayed the making of his planned A Star Is Born remake.
