Boys On Film 15: Time & Tied (DVD Review)

August 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Tommy Knight, Ceallach Spellman, Ashley Campbell, Ashley Ryder, Nigel Allen
Director: Various
Running Time: 136 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: August 22nd 2016 (UK)

Having taken us all around the world, Boys On Film returns to Britain for its 15th outing, Time & Tied. However, while sticking with one country, it doesn’t skimp on the quality, showing there’s a hell of a lot of good gay-themed short films being made in the UK.

Boys On Film 15 presents nine shorts which range from the award-winning Closets and the sexy, provocative G’Oclock, to time capsule of Polari that is Putting On The Dish, and a film many thought we’d never see, Trouser Bar.

But are they worth watching? Take a look below for our thoughts. And you can see what we think of other Boys On Film releases here. [Read more…]

Liebmann (DVD Review)

August 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Godehard Giese, Adeline Moreau, Fabien Ara, Bettina Grahs, Alain Denizart
Director: Jules Herrmann
Running Time: 82 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: August 22nd 2016 (UK)

Antek Liebmann leaves his home in Germany and rents a cottage in an idyllic French town. While he seems to have a few problems, he begins build a new life for himself, befriending a local woman, starting a relationship with a cute local guy and getting a job at an antique/second-hand shop. However, he has trouble sleeping and freaks out when he hears a hunter’s gunshot in the woods. Then a visit from a friend from Germany reveals why he left his old life behind and why he’s so troubled.

In cinema, there’s a fine line between someone seeming intriguingly troubled, and someone who just comes across as boring. And that’s where Liebmann’s problems lie. While there are periodic hints as to the fact there’s mystery around why Antek is the way he is, for much of the time it could just as easily be the problem that he’s slightly rude and dull. Too often the films tips from broodingly attempting to keep to us hooked to find out more about the main character, and just making him seem pretty tedious. Add in some slightly jarring moments of pretentious artsiness and a sequence of whimsy that seems to fall out of nowhere, and it’s a film that definitely tries hard, but will test many people’s patience. Jane Got A Gun (Blu-ray Review)

August 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, Ewan McGregor, Boyd Holbrook, Roland Emmerich
Director: Gavin O'Connor
Running Time: 98 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: August 22nd 2016 (UK)

Jane Got A Gun has had a few problems. That included a revolving door of actors getting involved and then backing out (including the likes of Jude Law, Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper), and director Lynn Ramsey leaving the production so late in the day that they didn’t know she was gone until she didn’t turn up for the first day of shooting. She was quickly replaced by Gavin O’Connor, who didn’t have a huge amount of time to prepare, which may explain why Jane Got A Gun isn’t all it might have been.

Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) is a woman living on the rough, tough, wild west frontier of 19th Century America. Her husband (Roland Emmerich) returns home riddled with bullets after a confrontation with the violent Bishop Boys gang, led by the brutal John (Ewan McGregor). They know the Boys are going to want to track him down to finish off the job. Jane decides she needs help and so decides to enlist her ex-lover, Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton). [Read more…]
