Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait Of James Dean UK Trailer – How queer was the legend?

February 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

James Dean’s sexuality has always been a matter of intense speculation. For everyone who’s come forward to say he was exclusively gay (and if Paul Alexander’s book Boulevard Of Broken Dreams is to be believed, a major masochist) there’s another who insists he was completely straight. One person says his relationship with Pier Angeli was real and her heartbreak eventually led to her suicide, while others says she was purely a beard and well aware of that fact.

We’re unlikely to ever known the full truth of whether Dean was gay, straight or bisexual, but the film Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait Of James Dean delves into the murky waters of the legend’s sexuality and speculates on the truth.

A May 13th UK DVD release has now been set and a trailer released, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Matthew Mishory and starring James Preston & Dan Glenn JOSHUA TREE 1951 follows James Dean (the handsome James Preston) on his first steps to becoming the international icon of youth and rebellion. The film is a series of revealing and sometimes dreamlike vignettes that blend autobiographical and fictionalised elements to present a pivotal moment in a remarkable life.

‘We follow Jimmy Dean during two periods of his life prior to becoming the international star that we all know today. In 1949, he joins UCLA as an acting major, a decision which ultimately estranged him from his father. Whilst there he wrestles with the mental and sexual constraints and boundaries of society and while demonstrating great acting skills he rebels against the system he finds himself within. Whilst in California he also starts to experiment with his sexuality, and finds solace in the beds of both men and women.

‘The film’s ‘present tense’ is in 1951, as Dean drives to the desert of Joshua Tree, California. Along for the ride is The Roommate (Dan Glenn), a struggling actor who lived and loved with Dean whilst at college. The friendship and intimacy he provides gives Dean a sense of security before embarking on his own path. Matthew Mishory presents his first feature; a brutal and honest exploration of Dean’s complicated sexuality and formative relationships; JOSHUA TREE, 1951 redefines the boy behind the image for a new generation.’joshua-tree-1951

Matt Bomer Gets His Period Drama On In A Winter’s Tale Snaps

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Winters-Tale-Matt-BomerMatt Bomer is part of a great ensemble who’ve got together for Akiva Goldsman’s directorial debut, A Winter’s Tale, including Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint and Kevin Corrigan, with Will Smith also rumoured for a cameo.

The film is now shooting and Filmofilia has gotten hold of some shots from the set, including out first look at the openly gay Bomer getting all togged up in period suit and tie, as well as rocking a beard that may not be his greatest look ever.

Based on Mark Helprin’s novel, A Winter’s Tale is set in both the present day and the late 19th century, and centres on a thief (Farrell) who falls in love with the Irish heiress (Jessica Brown Findlay) he just robbed, right before she dies. He later learns that he possesses the gift of reincarnation, and becomes determined to save her life.

Bomer is set to play the thief’s father (which is slightly odd as he’s actually younger than Farrell, but we’ll have to wait and see how it works).

Zachary Quinto Wants To Adopt In Dog Eat Dog Short Film

January 31, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Zachary Quinto has adopted – a dog, that is. Now he wants us all to see his experience getting a doggy, in exaggerated short film form. The money for Dog Eat Dog was raised through Kickstarter, with a portion of the budget donated to the LA Shelter System.

Quinto says, “This story is very close to all of us, as we have all rescued or fostered dogs over the years. The story of the film is an exaggerated account of how I eventually found my rescue dog Noah, but it still reflects a bit of the reality I faced when I was looking to adopt a shelter dog.”

Take a look at the 13-minute short above, all about how one man can get very attached to a rescue dog before he’s even been allowed to take it home, and tries to beat out Philip Baker Hall to be the adoptive doggy daddy.

British/American LGBTQI Indie Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas Wraps & The Teaser Is Here

January 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve been following the indie flick Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas ever since it sought funding through IndieGoGo last year. Now the movie has just wrapped, the teaser trailer is here and we’ve got a couple of images too (which you can see below).

Scottish actors and performers Ross William Wild (The Voice, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, the great gay short Downing) and Antony Cherrie (aka electro pop act Johnny Lazer) star in British director Simon Savory’s film. The US leg of the shoot wrapped in September 2012 on location in Death Valley Nevada and Los Angeles, with filming ending recently in Paris. The film is now in the editing suite, and will shortly be submitted to film festivals. Australian actor Miles Szanto (The Elephant Princess), Ashleigh Sumner (sci-fi TV series The Event) and Cassandra Peterson (Elvira Mistress Of The Dark) also star.

Ross, originally from Aberdeen, and Anthony, from Edinburgh, play a pair of ex-strippers who run away from their stripping troupe ‘The Hot Toddies’ to find fame in a rock band, only to wind up in a dusty hamlet deep in the Nevada desert.

Headstrong Earlene makes a discovery that she is totally unprepared for. Acting on impulses, she leaves everything behind and heads to LA. The perfect distraction comes along in the shape of the mysterious Bruno, a wandering intersex teenager she meets at Venice Beach. The two loners become fast friends, but when Earlene becomes embroiled in one of Bruno’s home rental scams, whilst simultaneously discovering just what lengths he will go to to score some cash, she takes the youth under her wing and drives off into the desert. Along the way they meet a sexually confused carjacker, a pair of Scottish ex-strippers, a tap-dancing drag queen and many more like-minded runaways – who are all looking for a way out in the world.

The film will tour international film festivals this summer.

God Loves Uganda Trailer – How anti-gay views get exported from the west to Africa

January 18, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The recent documentary Call Me Kuchu was a terrifying look at what it’s like to be gay in Uganda – the country where the so-called ‘Kill the gays’ bill is currently being debated by parliament and could see the death penalty attached to the ill-defined offence of ‘aggravated homosexuality’.

Thile Call Me Kuchu looked at the people affects, the new documentary God Loves Uganda, which premieres today at Sundance, is more interested in why homosexuality has become such a hot button issue in Africa, with several countries saying they want to strengthen laws against what is already a criminal offence. Director Roger Ross Williams suggests, as several have before him, that much of the impetus comes from anti-gay American preachers, who head to Africa and whip up hatred there.

In a statement he says, ‘I thought about following the activists-brave and admirable men and women-who were fighting against these policies. But I was more curious about the people who, in effect, wanted to kill me. (According to the provisions of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, I could be put to death or imprisoned.) Notably, almost every evangelical I met – American or Ugandan – was polite, agreeable, even charming. Yet I knew that if the bill passed, there would be blood on the streets of Kampala.

‘What explains that contradiction? What explains the murderous rage and ecstatic transcendence? In the well-known trope about Africa, a white man journeys into the heart of darkness and finds the mystery of Africa and its unknowable otherness. I, a black man, made that journey and found – America.’

Jodie Foster Inspires Young People To Vaguely Come Out, Sort Of (Spoof)

January 16, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jodie Foster’s rather meandering ‘coming out’ speech at the Golden Globes has certainly provoked a lot of reaction, from those who are pleased she’s said something that seems to be an unequivocal acknowledgement that she’s gay, to those peeved that it wasn’t more straightforward and also at the anger she seemed to have towards saying anything at all.

It’s also provoked a humorous response from The Onion, who say her speech has inspired youth across the US to kind of come out in vague, meandering ways. It’s quite fun, so take a look above.

Interior, Leather Bar Trailer – James Franco’s ‘homo-sex-art-film’

December 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I wonder whether director Travis Mathews regrets referring to the movie now known as Interior, Leather Bar as a ‘homo-sex-art-film’, as that’s all anyone seems to refer to it as now. The film is due to premiere at Sundance next month, and now the trailer for the meta-movie has arrived.

The Sundance synopsis says about the film, ‘To avoid an X rating, it was rumored that 40 minutes of gay S&M footage was cut from the controversial 1980 film, Cruising. Filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews re-imagine what was in the lost footage.’

However it’s not just about the 40-minutes themselves, as it self-reflexively looks at its own making and exactly what the point of the film is. The trailer is definitely intriguing, although it does look like the sort of film that will live on the edge between being a fascinating exploration of film, sexuality and the power of ideas, and something rather pretentious and in danger of disappearing up its own ass.

We’ll have to wait and see where it lives on this spectrum, but it’s certainly one to look out for – and hopefully it’ll also give us an insight into why James Franco is so fascinated by all things gay. [Read more…]

I’m So Excited Teaser – First look at Pedro Almodovar’s rather camp new movie

December 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pedro Almodovar is back with I’m So Excited. He recently said his new movie is more of a simple fun comedy flick than some of his more recent films, and that certainly seem true from this very camp teaser, which feels three male flight attendants lip-syncing to the Pointer Sisters’ song I’m So Excited during a flight.

The film features Javier Camara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Duenas, Raul Arevalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, and apparently has ‘special collaborations’ with Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega, although we’re not quite sure what that means.

Almodovar’s comedy is due to hit cinemas next year.

Adults Only Trailer – Into the world of the gay porn arcades

December 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michael Saul’s 2010 short film, Go Go Reject, was a lot of silly fun, but he’s going in a more seedy and serious direction with his new film, Adults Only. Saul reteams with the lead actor and writer of Go Go Reject, Heath Daniels, for the new short, which is currently in post-production.

The film takes us into the world of gay porn arcades and has even inspired an exhibition that starts January 18 at Los Angeles’ Antebellum Gallery and features photos, videos and arcade booths with strategically placed peepholes.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Michael is haunted by recurring memories of a lost love. Like an old black and white film on an endless loop, scenes from the past make sleep impossible.

‘He spends his days riding the subway, walking the streets, unable to relate to anyone.
Walking home one late night, Michael observes two men hurriedly leaving an adult porn arcade. He quietly follows them to a secluded alley where they begin to have passionate sex. Michael watches from the shadows and photographs them, unable to take his eyes off their primal connection.

‘The following night, he returns and enters the arcade. Pushing through the curtain, he is ushered into a fluorescent maze of hallways leading to private booths. Cracked doors and skillfully placed peepholes offer a voyeuristic view of intense and intimate exchanges.

‘Michael thinks he is only there to watch. But his view of reality is shaken when he unexpectedly meets an intense and handsome stranger, Nick and finds himself in an intimate exchange of his own.’

From the trailer above, it certainly look intriguing and rather sexy.
