Trans Model Andreja Pejic Seeks Funding For Documentary About Her Life

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

andreja-pejicFor the last few years Andreja Pejic has been making waves in the fashion world, gaining headlines for appearing on the catwalk modelling for both male and female clothing lines, known as an androgynous male model who spoke about living in-between genders.

However, underneath this she was dealing with gender dysphoria and this year Andreja revealed that she was now living as a woman and had completed sex reassignment surgery.

What make Pejic’s story all the more remarkable is that she’s come a very long, having spent part of her early life in a Serbian refugee camp to escape the war that was raging in her home country.

Now Andreja and filmmaker Eric hope to turn her story into a documentary, called Andrej(a), and they’ve launched a Kickstarter hoping to raise $200,000 to get the film completed.

On the funding page, Pejic writes, ‘On a snowy winter day in New York City, as I sat in my favorite Thai restaurant eating dinner with my dear friend and filmmaker Eric, along with his wife, I announced awkwardly “Eric, I have to tell you something. It’s intense. I don’t want to involve anyone else, just you. It’s very personal, I’ve told no one in the business, not even my agent. I am going to have SRS (sexual reassignment surgery) in two weeks!”

‘At that point in time I didn’t have a strong desire to share what was about to happen with anyone but a few very close friends, certainly not a camera! Eric’s words changed my view forever.

‘“This is a powerful part of an immensely courageous journey, we need to film this!” Eric said, his eyes beaming with excitement. “Your story is so unique. It has the potential to reach so many and to help millions of young people around the world. You need to do this! You know how many trans people (and people in general) are out there hiding, forced to live as someone they are not. You could give them hope by going public about this.”

‘Eric had filmed me several times before for fashion gigs and other small pieces. If I was going to allow any camera to follow me through the most challenging period of my life, it was his. That is how this documentary was born, and since then it has become one my life’s missions. I ask you, fellow Kickstarters, to join and help me complete the film. I hope that by sharing my humanity, pain, tears, laughter, joy, and biggest struggles on film, it will shed light on what it means to live as a transgender individual. I have always believed that differences between people should not equal divisions and I simply want to create something that could help build a bridge between my community and the rest of the world.’

Lily Tomlin Will Be The First Out Lesbian To Receive The Kennedy Center Honors

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Lily-tomlinThere is little doubt that the Kennedy Center Honors – given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime contribution – is one of the highest accolades in the US for actors, singers, composers, dancers and other artists. However no openly gay woman has ever been given the award – until now, that is.

It’s been announced that actress and comedian Lily Tomlin will be one of the five recipients of this year’s honors, alongside singer Al Green, actor and filmmaker Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride, and singer-songwriter Sting.

There have been previous female honorees who’ve been rumoured to be gay or bisexual, but Tomlin will be first one who out, and certainly the first one married to another woman.

It’s perhaps particularly surprising as the Kennedy Center hasn’t shied away from honoring gay and bisexual men, ranging from Tennessee Williams to Elton John, but for some reason no openly lesbian has previously been given the award.

Kennedy Center chairman David M. Rubenstein comments, “From the days of her early television and theatrical appearances, Lily Tomlin has made us laugh and continues to amaze us with her acting talent and quick wit.”

The Kennedy Center Honors medallions willbe presented on Saturday, December 6th, at a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry. On the Sunday there will be a White House Reception where Tomlin and co. will meet the President ahead of the Honors Gala in the evening, which will be recorded for a two-hour primetime TV special to be braodcast on Tuesday, December 30th at 9:00 pm.

Benedict Cumberbatch Talks Homophobia & The Need For A Gay President

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-slideWith The Imitation Game premièring at the Toronto International Film Festival, Benedict Cumberbatch has been talking to The Daily Beast. And as he’s playing a gay character, the interview touches on his experiences of witnessing homophobia when he was at school, how the US needs a gay president and the fact he things gay cure therapies are ‘horrifying’.

He’s not impressed either by how the character he plays in The Imitation Game, Alan Turing, was sidelined largely because of sexuality, despite the fact the made one of the most important steps towards ending World War II by devising a way to crack the Enigma Code, as well as laying the groundwork for modern computers. “He’s not as prominent as he should be. That’s the tragedy isn’t it, really?” Cumberbatch says.

As for gay cure therapies, he thinks, “There are courses and doctors and meds handed out to ‘cure’ people of their homosexuality, and it’s shocking that it still goes on. It’s also shocking that any time there’s any kind of hardship, the minorities are immediately scapegoated—and that includes homosexuals in Russia, the Golden Dawn in Greece. The Golden Dawn came out of a financial crisis and people wanted answers, and the minute you start stirring up nationalistic feelings, minorities are the first people to get it because they’re the easiest to scapegoat. It’s terrifying.”

While talking about the homophobia still present in the US, Cumberbatch adds, “You need to have a female president next, and then after that, a gay president. That’s the full journey from Obama’s legacy onwards.”

As for witnessing homophobia firsthand, he relates a tale from his schooldays, saying, “In an all-male boarding school, in the olden days, it was seen as being something that ‘just happened’ since there were no girls, so you had a bit of an experience. But there was incredible homophobia at my school, to the point where two boys who were caught doing something were literally chased down the street.

“I was 18. Two boys who were just discovered in bed together doing something, and it was shocking. I was just finishing an essay in the school dining hall at breakfast, and I looked out the window and heard a commotion, a pair of feet scampering by, and then a horde just charging after shouting, ‘Wankers! Faggots!’ and I thought, ‘What the fuck is going on?’ I asked these kids coming back from the house who were breathless from the hunt, ‘What are you doing, you insane idiots? What the fuck?'”

Out Filmmaker Todd Haynes Takes On Reese Witherspoon’s Peggy Lee Biopic

September 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Todd-HaynesBack in 2010 Reese Witherspoon revealed she wanted to go back into the world of music biopics which had served her with Walk The Line, as she started developing a movie about Peggy Lee that your also planned to star in.

It’s taken a long time, but now the film has inched forward with the news that Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Far From Heaven) is set to direct.

Nora Ephron was previously attached to write and direct, but her death in 2014 put the project into  although the project stalled after she passed away in June 2012. Since then Doug Wright (Quills, Two Lovers) has been working on the screenplay though.

It’s not known exactly what direction the movie will take as Peggy Lee’s story doesn’t come with the usual trappings of a musical biopic, such as drug addiction and early death. However she was an incredible force in the incredibly male dominated music world, scoring no. 1s not just as a singer, but also by writing hits for other artists and becoming a mentor and inspiration to everyone from Frank Sinatra to Paul McCartney.

She also wasn’t afraid to change, starting off as a big band singer, moving through jazz, and doing covers of rock ‘n’ roll songs when they became popular. She also acted, including voicing several characters in Lady & The Tramp.

The openly gay Haynes first made his name as a leading light in the New Queer Cinema movement in the 1990s, thanks to films such as Poison, [Safe] and Velvet Goldmine. He also found huge acclaim for his 2011 mini-series version of Mildred Pierce, starring Kate Winslet.

Pasolini Trailer – Willem Dafoe & Abel Ferrara take on the life of the renowned gay director

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

willem-dafoe-pasolini2It was back in March that the first images from Abel Ferrera’s Pasolini emerged, but it’s only now that the first people have got to see the film, with screenings at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, and a trailer that you can watch right here.

The film concentrates of the final days of director, writer and provocateur Pier Paolo Pasolini (Willem Dafoe), with the film trying to piece together who this complicated figure was in the lead up to his murder.

Pasolini grew up Mussolini’s Italy (his father actually saved the dictator’s life), before becoming a communist. However he was thrown out of the Party after being charged with committing lewd acts in a public place, which was the first of several legal battles, partly based on the Italian government’s initial antipathy to him.

Those lewd act charges also meant that he was out as gay whether he wanted to be or not.

Pasolini became a renowned but controversial director, helming films such as The Decameron, The Gospel According to Matthew and Salo Or The 120 Days Of Sodom. Although he had a rather complex relationship with his sexuality and his work, he was known for liking to cruise the streets of Italy looking for furtive sex.

Tragically in 1975 he was murdered. A 17-year-old rent boy was convicted of the crime, but in recent years there has been speculation he was killed as part of an extortion plot or due to anger at his communist leanings.

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

JK Rowling Shows She Has No Time For Homophobic Harry Potter Fans

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

JK-RowlingJK Rowling isn’t exactly the most prolific tweeter, but she isn’t afraid to let her feelings be known if she’s in the mood, and that includes schooling homophobes on where they can stick their opinions.

A Twitter user called @halfelven55ff probably thought he was merely merely ranting into the ether when he wrote ‘@jk_rowling Once u revealed Dumbledore was homosexual I stopped being a fan. Nice how u blindsided us with that one. Enjoy your billion $.’

However Rowling saw it and responded, ‘@halfelven55ff I advise you to start following Brian Souter at once. He’s much more your kind of person.’

Souter is a Scottish businessman and owner of the Stagecoach Bus Group, who drew the ire of many when he spent over £1 million of his own money attempting to retain a clause in Scottish law that essentially forbade the mention of anything LGBT in schools. That, along with other controversial statements, have understandably caused many to see him as a homophobe.

He’s also given money and campaigned for a ‘yes’ vote in the upcoming Scottish Independence Election, with Rowling amongst the most prominent names in the ‘no’ campaign.

In case you were wondering, @halfelven55ff, doesn’t seem to have enjoyed the response to his tweet as he’s now removed his Twitter page completely. [Read more…]

Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka Have Officially Tied The Knot

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harris-david-burtkaIt just shows how times have changed when you hear the news that a same sex couple got married, and you’re confused because you thought they’d already gotten hitched. However the news has come through that the always wonderful Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka got married in Italy over the weekend.

Harris announced the news with the slightly cheesy tweet, ‘Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the ‘n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband’.’

And just to make sure things were suitably gay, Elton John performed at the wedding reception. The ceremony itself was officiated by How I Met Your Mother producer and director Pam Fryman.

Same sex marriage is not recognised in Italy (they don’t even have civil unions), but we’re sure NPH and his new hubby have got that sorted, something that’s now possible due to the federal recognition of gay marriage in the US.

Only a few weeks ago the couple were having to deny tabloid rumours that they’d split up – but now they’ve shown that nothing could be further from the truth.

Michael C. Hall Set To Be Broadway’s Next Hedwig

September 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-c-hall-hedwig-slideWhat was initially thought to be a limited run for Hedwig & The Angry Inch on Broadway is fast becoming a bit of a long-runner, with actors lining up to take on the show’s title role. It’s not surprising there are plenty interested in following in Neil Patrick Harris and Andrew Rannells’ footsteps, as Hedwig allows them to rock out and be outrageous in a show that’s completely centred around them.

So who will take over when Rannells’ run ends? It’s been announced that it’s be none other than Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall, who steps back into the world of LGBT after his great gay character in Six Feet Under.

Hall will play the role from October 16th through to January 4th at Broadway’s Belasco Theater.

While the actor made his name in theatre before Six Feet Under, but he hasn’t had been on the stage since playing Billy Flynn in Chicago back in 2002.

Now we just want to see what he looks like in the Hedwig makeup.

Benedict Cumberbatch & Imitation Game Get Oscar Buzz, But How Does It Deal With Alan Turing’s Sexuality?

September 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

imitation-game-slideThe biopic of gay computing pioneer Alan Turing, The Imitation Game, has premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and the first reviews of the movie have arrived, which suggest both the film – and Benedict Cumberbatch in particular – are likely to get some Oscar attention.

The film is centred around how the unconventional and rather brusque Turing cracked the German Enigma code – which the Axis forces thought was completely secure – using an early computer that was able to sort through the millions upon millions of possible ciphers to decode the original messages.

In an article called ‘Imitation Game Demands Oscar’s Attention’, Variety says that the film ‘is clearly an awards contender: Complex, impeccably executed and unique. The film’s offbeat approach to an oddball character will be its greatest strength — and its challenge.’

THR adds that the film is ‘Engrossing, nicely textured and sadly tragic…’, adding that the distributor ‘has several angles it can play to build this prestige production into a considerable commercial success.’ Deadline agrees, saying ‘this one just has Academy Award nominations written all over it.’

However while some believe Morten Tyldum’s film may be too ‘conventional’ for Best Picture success, all seem to agree that Cumberbatch is very impressive as Turing, with Indiewire saying, ‘It’s a reserved, almost conservative performance, and in holding so much back so much of the time, Cumberbatch makes his few outward displays of emotion far more impactful.’

In THR’s words, ‘dominating it all is Cumberbatch, whose charisma, tellingly modulated and naturalistic array of eccentricities, Sherlockian talent at indicating a mind never at rest and knack for simultaneously portraying physical oddness and attractiveness combine to create an entirely credible portrait of genius at work.’

Variety meanwhile refers to Cumberbatch’s performance as ‘masterful’, adding ‘The Imitation Game doesn’t need its banal catchphrases to show us that Turing is a savant who sees and feels the world differently than most other people, because it’s there in every inch of Cumberbatch’s performance.”

Film Freak Central is also impressed, saying ‘Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing, truly’, while Hitfix eulogises, ‘Cumberbatch does a wonderful job bringing this characterization to life and it’s often his performance that overcomes some of the film’s melodramatic tendencies’.

Many seem to believe the film could bring Benedict his first Oscar nomination.

There was worry before the film started shooting that The Imitation Game would sideline or ignore Turing’s sexuality, with suggestions that some versions of the script almost made it a romance between the computer genius and young cryptographer Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley).

However most of early reviews suggest this isn’t too much of a problem, with the entire movie framed by a key situation after the War in the early 1950s. Turing was robbed and when he told the police the culprit was likely to be a friend of his young male lover, rather than being helped by the authorities as he’d expected, he was charged and convicted of gross indecency. He was then chemically castrated (it was either that or go to prison) and his career destroyed. He later killed himself.

It was an astonishingly tragic end for a man who Churchill said made the greatest contribution to ending World War II. However his contribution to both the war effort and to computing in general was kept secret for years, both because how he broke the Engima Code was considered a state secret and because his sexuality made him an ‘undesirable’ by the social code of the time. He was eventually officially pardoned by the UK Government from the Gross Indecency charge, but not until a couple of years ago.

The reports on The Imitation Game from Telluride say the film includes a gay romance in Turing’s teenage years, as well as talking about the fact he’s had affairs and male lovers. While the movie does include that he proposed marriage to Joan (which did happen in real life), the reviews suggest this is put properly into the context of what he was trying to do during a time when homosexuality was illegal.

Indeed many suggest that it’s Turing’s eccentricity and his sexuality that are the overall theme of the movie, with Film Freak Central saying that ultimately the movie proposes that, ‘different is good, and you shouldn’t criminalize homosexuality, because what if a gay guy is the saviour of the free world and you just chemically-castrated him and caused him to kill himself?’, while Variety adds ‘The film ultimately celebrates anyone who is not “normal.”’

However the consensus is not universal and Hitfix comes to the opposite conclusion, feeling that the film whitewashes his sexuality far too much, saying ‘The more I ponder the ending of the film the more frustrated I become. In effect, much of Turing’s gay life is completely washed over. He says he had numerous affairs/lovers, but the film pushes the central relationship between his one-time fiance Clarke as the most prominent. That’s somewhat odd after Turing justifies the entire engagement as his way to keep her working on the secret project. Let’s be clear, Turing was one of the greatest gay men of the 20th century whose life was destroyed by an archaic charge in 1952. It’s almost head-scratching how the film could be structured to diminish this part of his life.’

We’ll be able to see for ourselves how it deals with Turing’s sexuality when The Imitation Game reaches the UK on November 12th and the US on November 21st.
