Girls On Film: The First Date Trailer – The LGBT short film collection gets its first lesbian-themed entry

July 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Girls-On-Film-picOver the last few years the Boys On Film releases have been a huge success, becoming the most successful short film DVD series in the world. However until now it’s just been about gay men, with 10 great releases full of shorts from all around the world, but each of them focussed on guys.

Now it’s time to start redressing the balance as the company behind Boys On Film, Peccadillo Pictures, is set to release the lesbian-themed short film selection, Girls On Film: The First Date. And you can watch the trailer below.

Take a look at some info about each of the DVD’s short films underneath the trailer. Girls On Film: The First Date is out in the UK on 14th July 2014. [Read more…]

New Supercut Reveals Transformers Director Michael Bay’s Obsession With Cheap & Nasty Gay Jokes

July 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-bay-age-of-extinction-setThere has been a lot of comment about how Michael Bay films the few female characters allowed into his movies in a way that makes even the least socially aware person suddenly realise what the term ‘objectification of women’ means.

What isn’t mentioned quite as often is that there’s also at least one moment in any Bay movies where gay people will start cringing due to a joke where ‘homos’ are the punchlines, and which like the way he treats women, reveals a very old-fashioned attitude to what it means to be a ‘man’ and what masculinity is. Yet there’s still a fascination with, probably due to the fact he loves bromances, even if Bay is now the king of ‘no homo’.

To show just how Bay’s attitude to gay people works (and with Transformers: Age Of Extinction opening), Gawker has come up with a rather fascinating supercut of gay jokes from a variety of the director’s movies, which shows just how cheap, casual and rather unpleasant his film’s attitude towards homosexuality is, whether it’s the world’s most stereotypically gay stylist in The Rock (which really does come across like a gay minstrel show), or Mark Wahlberg making sure there are ‘no homos’ amongst a group of kids in Pain & Gain.

Take a look below. [Read more…]

Former Doctor Who Boss Russell T Davies Questions Why There Aren’t Gay People In Star Wars

July 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

Russell-T-DaviesA few day ago we posted a story about the fact the director of the upcoming Star trek 3, Roberto Orci, says he’s open to including a gay character in the film (even if it doesn’t seem particularly likely that’s it’s actually going to happen). The reason is was worth reporting is that despite Star Trek not being far from its 50th anniversary, it’s never had an openly gay character (on screen at least).

Similarly – and despite jokes about C3PO and R2D2 – Star Wars has been a completely straight zone.

It’s not just in these sci-fi franchise where LGBT people are completely absent, which is something noted by former Doctor Who head honcho Russell T Davies in a new interview for Attitude, where he says there are ‘vast empires’ gay people are missing from.

“Don’t just look at where we are, look at where we’re not,” he says. “We’re gay, so we tend to notice the gay stuff, which means that we can miss the fact that whole nights of TV can sail past without a single gay person in sight.

“There are whole vast empires where we don’t exist – there’s not a single gay person in Star Wars, in Star Trek, in Disney, in Pixar, and this stuff isn’t old, it remains current. There’s still a long way to go.”

Davies adds about UK soap operas, which currently have a fairly healthy crop of LGBT characters, “I actually think soaps are in trouble, and we need to be careful – as ratings slide slowly downwards, you can now see a landscape in ten years’ time where they won’t exist any more, or they will be substantially reduced.

“And they contain a vast amount of our gay characters. Without the soaps, you’ll find those stats that count gay visibility on screen will plummet. So I wouldn’t take them for granted. If you took away the soaps, then the schedules would be even more empty.”

It was Davies who ensured Doctor Who didn’t remain completely straight with the likes of John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness. The Queer As Folk creator is returning this year with a trio of gay-themed TV series, Cucumber, Bananas and Tofu.

Same Difference Doc About The Different Experience Of Two Gay Teens Seeks Funding

July 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

same-differenceFor some young people there’s never been a better time to grow up LGBT, with some rarely facing homophobia directed personally at them. However, with attitudes towards homosexuality often polarised (particularly in the US), for others the increased visibility of gay people and the vitriolic attitudes of some people mean there can be intense pressure of them, which can sometimes lead to tragedy.

The difference is often the area they grow up in and whether there are any support structures to help them.

The documentary Same Difference wants to take a look at this through the stories of two gay teens, Graeme Taylor and Justin Aaberg, the latter of whom committed suicide in 2010 at the age of just 15. In order to get the doc completed, the makers have launched an IndieGoGo campaign hoping to raise $135,000.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Same Difference is a feature length documentary that presents the lives of two adolescent boys who identify as gay from a young age. Graeme Taylor, now 18 and off to college, grows up and goes to school in a supporting environment that allows him to thrive. Justin Aaberg (1995-2010) unfortunately grows up and goes to a school filled with intolerant backwards policies and scandal. Justin was just one of nine teens that took their lives while attending the Anoka-Hennepin School District between 2009-2011. This resulted in state health officials declaring the school district a suicide contagion, leading to a Department Of Justice investigation.

‘The role the school played in these deaths is explored through Jefferson Fietek, the only openly gay teacher in the district at the time. Additionally Mellisa Thompson, a parent in the district, highlights the shortcomings of the school board and the administration. Dr. Dorothy Espelage, Ph.D, Dr. Antoine Douaihy M.D., and Dr. Liz Winter PhD, LSW, examine the current research on anti-bullying and offer solutions to handling gender issues among adolescents within schools.’

Matt Bomer Still Plans To Play Gay/Bisexual Star Montgomery Clift ‘If It’s Done Right’

July 5, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

montgomery-clift-matt-bomerLast September the news emerged that Matt Bomer was attached to star in a biopic of legendary gay/bisexual 1950s star Montgomery Clift. However we’re heard little about the project since.

So while talking to Bomer in the set of White Collar, Xfinity LGBT decided to ask him about the project and whether we’re still likely to get to see him take on Clift.

Thankfully the film is still in the works, but it’s still waiting for all the right pieces to comes together. Bomer says, “It’s potentially on track to be made in the way that we’d like it to be made, at the home we’d like it to be made. But I’m only going to be a part of it if it’s done right. I have too much respect for Monty and Liz [Taylor, Clift’s close friend] and that whole world and that whole generation of actors…we could do it tomorrow and make some salacious version of the story and that’s not what I’m interested in.”

In the late 40s and early 50s, Clift was on the path to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. After The Heiress, Red River, A Place In The Sun, I Confess and From Here To Eternity, he was a true heart-throb with three Oscar nominations to his name. In many people’s opinion he was a talent on a par with James Dean and Marlon Brando – and all that by the age of 24.

However, Clift was also gay (or at least bisexual) at a time when homosexuality was illegal. He never really came to terms with his sexuality. He suffered from severe self-loathing throughout his adult life (as did many gay people back them) and became a severe alcoholic. In 1956, during the filming of Raintree County, he crashed his car while drunk which caused various injuries, including facial lacerations that meant he was never quite as good looking again. While he continued to work, with a prominent facial scar and alcohol quickly ageing him, his roles were limited and his days as a heart-throb were essentially over.

He died in 1966, aged only 45, from alcohol-related occlusive coronary artery disease. Acting teacher Robert Lewis famously described Clift’s death as the longest suicide in history.

It certainly a story worth telling, but as Bomer says, it needs to be done right, so that it doesn’t just become another movie about a gay guy who dies. Although Clift was famous, his story is typical of thousands of gay people at the time, whose life was destroyed by society’s attitude towards their sexuality, which not only criminalised same sex acts but also ensured they hated themselves.

It’ll also be interesting to see whether Bomer’s reference to the film being made as ‘the home we’d like it to be made’ means HBO. The pay-cable network was behind The Normal Heart, which Bomer just starred in, and with its track record for gay-themed projects such as Looking and Behind The Candelabra, it would seem a sensible home.

Narcissist Trailer – From love into darkness in the gay-themed short film

July 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

narcissist-posterThe new gay-themed short film Narcissist is currently doing the film festival rounds, but if you want to get a taste of director Eric Casaccio’s 17-minute flick, you can watch the moody trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Narcissist” is the story of a kind soul (Evan) who attracts a dark knight (Rob) into his life. It’s almost as it’s meant to be until Rob goes from a charming man to a manipulative individual who suddenly pulls the carpet out from under Evan, smashing his heart into a million pieces.

‘Evan’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) ends up taking him to a place of truth while Rob spirals into his own midlife crisis.

‘Sometimes one must experience darkness to find a true authentic light.’

You can find out more over at the film’s website, including info on upcoming screenings. [Read more…]

Broke Straight Boys TV Trailer – The gay for pay porn site tries a reality TV series

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

broke-straight-boys-tv-pictureWe’re not quite sure what’s going on with this one, but gay for pay porn site Broke Straight Boys seems to have decided it would be a good plan to make a reality television series, offering a backstage look at these ‘straight’ boys who will do anything for cash.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A peek at the Broke Straight Boys Reality Show is here! Prepare yourself for one of the most unique series ever made for television. Its polarizing content and its visceral effect on viewers is undeniable. Without apology, this series provides an uncensored look into the lives of people who make porn… and more specifically, straight men who do gay porn and the multi-million dollar company that provides the platform.

‘Though no explicit porn is shown in the series, the mere suggestion of what they do and the insight into their chosen profession makes Broke Straight Boys a true character study, bringing the viewer into a world they may not have known existed and will surely never forget.’

It’s an odd but potentially interesting idea, although I can’t escape the feeling it’s essentially a publicity stunt, taking on the idea that the guys on gay for pay sites aren’t really straight, and often not quite as ‘regular’ as they appear. However the show seems to want to show they’re all into manly, straight things, have suitably masculine arguments (which sound perhaps a little contrived), and there are plenty of women around to show how much they’re into lady bits – even if the guys do get very close to one another in exchange for money.

We’re still not 100% all these guys are as straight as they’re paid to say they are, but if gay for pay is your thing, this could be the series for you! There’s no news on whether the show will actually air on TV or whether it will just be online (where it would essentially just be an advert for the site).

Take a look at the pretty much safe for work trailer below. [Read more…]

Tiger Orange Trailer – Gay porn star Frankie Valenti (aka Johnny Hazzard) goes legit with an LGBT-themed tale of sibling rivalry

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Frankie Valenti (Johnny Hazzard) in TIGER ORANGEBack in April 2013 we posted info on the KickStarter campaign for a movie going by the title Where We Belong, which was due to mark the legit debut of gay adult film star Johnny Hazzard (aka Frankie Valenti).

Since that successful campaign the film has been completed and has a new name – Tiger Orange – but Valenti still stars, with Wade Gasque directing.

The film is gearing up for its World Premiere as part of LA’s Outfest on Friday, July 18th, 8:30pm at the Ford, and ahead of that a festival trailer for the movie has been released, which you can watch below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Two estranged gay brothers attempt to make amends in Wade Gasque’s charming small-town drama. Set against the sun-kissed fields of Central  California, and anchored by strong performances from Mark Strano and pornstar-turned-leading man Frankie Valenti (aka Johnny Hazzard), TIGER ORANGE pits two diametric opposites against each other – the closeted introvert versus the out-and-proud hunk. The result is a blunt, playful meditation on queer sibling rivalry and the childhood bonds that force us together.’ [Read more…]

‘Feature-length, Experimental’ Gay-Themed Film M/M Seeks Funding

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mm-indiegogoThere are plenty of gay-themed films out there looking for crowdfunding, but even with the power of the web, it’s still tough for films that are a bit more experimental to get the cash they need. M/M is hoping to be the exception though, as it’s currently seeking funding via IndieGoGo.

Here’s the enigmatic synopsis: ‘Matthew is a Canadian new to Berlin. He’s come to escape from himself, make a fresh start. When he meets Matthias, he finds what he’s been looking for. Matthias is the new Matthew. Consciously or unconsciously, Matthew begins to take over Matthias’ identity. He cuts his hair, gets a tattoo, buys new clothes. When Matthias gets into a motorcycle accident, the opportunity is too perfect. Matthew is Matthias. In his coma, Matthias’ dreams and memories blur together, merging with the reality happening outside. Interior becomes exterior. Where the real ends and the artificial begins is a puzzle for all parties involved.’

The makers are also keen to add that, ‘Satisfying and challenging queer content remains at a premium.  M / M is not a coming out story.  It’s not a movie about being gay.  It’s not sassy quips and Bellinis.  It’s not about advocacy. M / M is a film and its main characters are gay.’

Drew Lint is set to direct the film, with the hope that if they can get the funding together it will shoot in Germany in October.

You can take a look at the brief promo trailer for M/M below, as well as one for Lint’s recent short film, Rough Trade. If you think it looks interesting, head over the IndieGoGo for more info and to contribute. [Read more…]

Pride Trailer – It’s Gay-Straight culture clash for Imelda Staunton, Andrew Scott, Paddy Considine and Dominic West

June 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pride-new-slideAfter a great response at Cannes – where it won the Queer Palm – the Brit flick Pride is heading for a September 12th UK release. We had a clip a few weeks ago, but now the full trailer has arrived (watch it below), showcasing this film about two very different groups of people wanting to support the same cause.

Based on a true story, Pride is set during the summer of 1984, with Margaret Thatcher in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But there is a problem. The Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.

But the activists are not deterred. They decide to ignore the Union and go direct to the miners. They identify a mining village in deepest Wales and set off in a mini bus to make their donation in person. This brings together two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. But as you can see in the trailer, it’s not initially an easy alliance.

The likes of Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Andrew Scott and Paddy Considine star, with Tony Award-winning theatre director Matthew Warchus making his feature helming debut with the movie. [Read more…]
