Benedict Cumberbatch Is Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In New Imitation Game Pics

June 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict Cumberbatch & Charles Dance in The Imitation Game

While some are still angry that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, early buzz says it could be the strongest performance of the his career so far (although many Leo DiCaprio fans will never get over the fact he was supposed to star at some point).

Now a couple of new pics have arrived via Empire, which may not convince anyone he look anything like Turing, but we’re sure his fans will be excited.

The film is a biopic of Turing, a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. The film chronicles the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment.

Tragically in the 1950s Turing admitted to the police he was gay while reporting a robbery, believing they would protect him and catch those who’d stolen from him. Instead it was him who found himself in court. After he was convicted he was shunned by the establishment and despite his incredible mind he found himself pushed to the sidelines. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

Director Morten Tyldum says of what drew him to the film, “It is such a complex story. It was the gay rights element, but also how his ideas were kept secret and how incredibly important his work was during the war, that he was never given credit for it.”

Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. The film currently has an Oscar-bait November release date set.

I Am Happiness On Earth Trailer – Sexuality becomes fluid in the upcoming LGBT-themed film

June 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I-Am-Happiness-On-Earth2Normally you’d hope a synopsis for a movie would give you an idea of what it’s about, but for I Am Happiness Of Earth, you’ll have to rely on the trailer.

In case you’re wondering why, here is that synopsis: ‘Emiliano looks at his life with the eyes of a film director, mixing the objective reality with the processes of the artistic creation. The story he is filming flounders with his daily life, until his world is trapped in the lens of his camera. Confused, always alone and in front of a screen, now become a transfigured reality, but at the same time a measurable, controllable and manipulable one, he listens in loop to a song: one of those songs you sing or repeat as a prayer and forcing you to remember, believe and convince yourself.’

If you are wondering what it’s about, in basic terms it’s the erotic story of a filmmaker and a dancer, and how the flirtation between then affects both men.

The film comes from Julian Hernandez, who impressed a few years ago with Broken Sky.

The movie screened yesterday at the San Francisco’s Frameline LGBT film festival. A DVD/VoD release is set for August 11th in the UK and August 19th in the US. [Read more…]

Love Or Whatever HOT Teaser – There sure are some good looking guys in the upcoming gay rom-com

June 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

love-or-whatever-slideA couple of months ago we posted the trailer for Love Or Whatever, but it seems the makers weren’t sure everyone was aware just what measure of hotness and shirtlessness the movie will feature. As a result they’ve come up with a ‘HOT Bonus Teaser Trailer’, dedicated to the film’s talent.

And we have to agree, there does appear to be plenty of hotness on display!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Corey had it all – a successful career, bags of charm and, most of all, a bright future with his boyfriend. But, when his other half commits the ultimate betrayal and dumps him for a woman, he embarks upon a wild journey of self-discovery. Soon, he meets a potentially perfect new guy but first he needs to make some life-changing choices. Sexy and genuinely funny (including a hilarious star turn from “The Brady Bunch Movie’s” Jennifer Elise Cox), “Love or Whatever” is the freshest, funniest gay comedy around.’

It’s due out in the UK in July. [Read more…]

Broken Heart Land Trailer – The journey to becoming LGBT advocates after losing a gay son

June 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

broken-heart-landOn an early autumn afternoon, gay teen Zack Harrington killed himself with a gunshot to the head in his parent’s ranch in Norman, Oklahoma. One week earlier, Zack allegedly attended a local city council meeting in support of a proposal for LGBTQ History Month. When the floor opened up for public comment, some community members made highly controversial statements equating being gay with the spread of diseases such as HIV and AIDS.

Against the backdrop of a town bitterly divided on the issue of homosexuality, Zack’s parents, both conservative Republicans and military veterans, are forced to reconcile their own social and political beliefs with their son’s death. Determined to understand him, they discover a diary, which paints a portrait of a boy in crisis, and a chilling secret that Zack kept hidden for almost two years. It leads them to some painful conclusions about their son’s life and death.

When an outspoken conservative citizen runs for City Council, the Harringtons decide to join the politically active group, “MOMS: Mothers of Many.” Over the course of the local election season, witness Zack’s family, once private and politically conservative, come out of their own closet, moving from private denial to a climactic and very public acceptance of their son’s legacy.

Broken Heart Land will air online in the US on June 24 on World Channel’s America Reframed program, as well as on select PBS channels. You can also visit brokenheartland.com for more information.

Road To Home Documentary About Young, Homeless LGBT People Seeks Funding

June 22, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

road-to-homeA vastly disproportionate of young homeless people are LGBT, many thrown out by their families after coming out or having run away from the pressures of homes. However it’s a subject that’s often ignored. Documentarian Cal Skaggs hopes to change that with Road To Home, and he’s turned to Kickstarter to raise the funding to get the film in the can.

Here’s some more info from the Kickstarter page: ‘As closets have opened to more fruitful lives for LGBT adults in the past decade, the most vulnerable in our society are being left behind. Emboldened by the increasing acceptance experienced by LGBT adults, more and more young people are coming out to their friends and families—and getting kicked out—younger and younger. Many parents claim their religion will not allow them to shelter an LGBT child in their homes. So they kick their children out, or treat them so badly they can no longer live at home. In fact, recent studies indicate that approximately 25% of LGBT teens wind up on the streets and in public shelters after coming out to their parents.

‘In cities across America, hundreds of thousands of LGBT young people wander the streets without a place to call home. In New York City, from Times Square to the streets of Harlem, from the Chelsea Piers to the FDR Drive overpass, thousands of them take shelter wherever they can in hopes that they’ll make it through the night. Though they all may not look homeless, some even blending into the crowd as ordinary teenagers, many of these young people face the real dangers that come with living on the streets: addiction, exploitation, imprisonment, hunger, and even death. In the midst of this crisis, however, there are glimmers of hope—the resilience and spark of youth who have not yet been lost to perils of street life, and the determination of activists dedicated to making a difference.

‘Road to Home will follow a half dozen young LGBT people who turned to the streets after being rejected by their families. Having been in production for the last year, we have met a number of people who have allowed us into their lives and have agreed to be filmed. Through the use of observational footage, we will intimately trace their journeys as they traverse the street life—from the blistering heat of summer to the frigid nights of winter—moving from shelter to shelter and fighting just to survive.

‘However, our goal is not to simply wring our hands at a social problem. Throughout production, we worked closely with the Ali Forney Center, a NYC organization tasked with helping LGBT homeless youth. By using the Ali Forney Center as a springboard into this complex world, we have been able to work with people dedicated to making a difference. It is our goal not only to tell a powerful dramatic story, but also to create a film that will motivate people to do something about a critical social problem.

‘And this is where you come in, Kickstarter. We’re at a crucial point right now. We’ve completed 95% of production, and we hope to get into the editing room this summer. But we need your help to get there. If we reach our goal, we will be able to start editing and get the film to a rough cut. So please, take a look at all the materials here and the rewards and consider a contribution. Your help will go a long way in getting this important film made. You can make sure this important story gets told.’

Take a look at the pitch vid below and then head over to Kickstarter to help. [Read more…]

Ethan Hawke Believes Gay-Themed Entertainment Could Lead To A Decrease In Teen Suicide

June 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ethan-hawkeEthan Hawke has been in Canada, and took the chance to have a chat with the Toronto Star, which wrote about the classic Nicholas Ray film, Rebel Without A Cause, to mark the start of the city’s Worldpride.

Rebel is seen by many as one of the seminal gay-themed films, although as it was made in the 1950s it’s all under the surface. The film includes the character of Plato (played by gay actor Sal Mineo) who becomes fascinated by James Dean’s Jim Stark. On the surface it seems like hero-worship, but  many have interpreted it as a gay crush, something Dean’s character isn’t afraid of reciprocating with affection. Eventually Jim, Plato and Natalie Wood’s Judy become almost a surrogate family, who all receive something from one another they feel ‘normal’ society can’t give them.

Talking about the movie, Hawke says, “Nicholas Ray is such a great filmmaker and it’s a great example right now of how much more comfortable we are confronting sexuality than in the past. It doesn’t have to be all tucked away in innuendo any more, even in the way Tennessee Williams would have to tuck it away at the very end of his life.”

He hopes the increasingly presence of gay themes and characters in mainstream entertainment will have an increasingly positive effect, saying, “It’s been fascinating to me. One of the biggest differences I think between my generation and my kids is that they have almost zero homophobia. They’ve grown up thinking that it’s not a big deal to have gay characters on TV or in movies like Boys Don’t Cry or Kiss of the Spider Woman.

“There are all these things that started this (gay acceptance) ball rolling, and now people are really comfortable talking about it. I think you’ll see a lot less teen suicide in the coming years. I really do believe that.”

Martin Sheen Will Be A Gay Husband In Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin’s New Netflix Comedy

June 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Martin-SheenBack in March it was announced that Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin had signed up to reteam for a new comedy for Netflix, and now another entertainment industry luminary is joining them, and he’ll be playing gay, according to THR.

Martin Sheen has signed up for the 13-episode series, which is called Grace and Frankie.

The show focuses on the titular nemeses, Grace (Fonda) and Frankie (Tomlin), who are facing the last chapter of their lives, though not in the way they expected. Their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married. Unsurrisingly the women find their lives both turned upside down and – to their dismay – permanently intertwined. Eventually, to their surprise, they find they have each other.

Now we know Sheen will be one of the hubbys, Robert, who is married to Fonda’s character, but doesn’t want to be anymore.

Ralph Fiennes Says He Was Asked Not To Hire A Gay Director In Russia

June 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ralph-fiennesThere has been plenty of evidence emerging from Russia that the country is becoming increasingly and disturbingly anti-gay. However it’s not just the ‘gay propaganda’ law that essentially bans any positive talk of homosexuality in public, but it appears filmmakers are being asked to sign pledges they won’t make films about anything LGBT in the country or hire a gay director.

That includes Ralph Fiennes, who’s spoken out about the fact he was asked to sign such a document on a recent trip to Russia. He told The Guardian, “I knew there was a disturbing level of homophobia, but this written requirement I found profoundly disturbing. I’m afraid I laughed – as you do when you discover something really shocking.”

He also believes there is “something worrying about the way the press has had its spine snapped” in Russia, particularly in regards of reporting on gay issues or the controversy over the anti-gay laws.

Love Is Strange Trailer – John Lithgow and Alfred Molina deal with life after gay marriage

June 21, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

love-is-strange-slideJohn Lithgow and Alfred Molina are getting married – on-screen at least. Love Is Strange debuted at Sundance to largely positive reviews, but it’s only now that we get our first looked at the gay-themed film from Ira Sachs, the director of Keep The Lights On.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After 39 years together, Ben and George finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when news of their marriage reaches the Catholic school where George works, he is fired from his longtime job, and the couple can no longer afford their New York City apartment. As a temporary solution, George moves in with the two gay cops next door, while Ben moves to Brooklyn to live with his nephew, Eliot; Eliot’s wife, Kate; and their teenage son. As Ben and George struggle to secure a new apartment, the pain of living apart and their presence in two foreign households test the resilience and relationships of all involved.

‘Propelled by exquisite performances from John Lithgow as Ben and Alfred Molina as George, with robust support from Marisa Tomei, Darren Burrows, and young Charlie Tahan, this subtle, yet profound, drama is suffused with gentle humor. From distinguished Festival veteran Ira Sachs (Forty Shades of Blue won the Grand Jury Prize in 2005, and Keep the Lights On played in the U.S. Dramatic Competition in 2012), Love Is Strange will shake audience members to their cores.’

A limited US cinema release is planned for August 22nd. [Read more…]

Steve Martin Says He Hasn’t Heard About A Gay Father Of The Bride 3

June 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

father-of-the-bride-1991Yesterday we reported on a story from NikkiFinke that Disney was working on a third film in the Father Of The Bride franchise, with the film set to revolve around a gay wedding.

While the original story suggested Steve Martin was set to star, the actor himself suggests otherwise. He took to Twitter to say, ‘So excited to read I’m doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven’t seen a script or been offered the role!’

The 1991 Father Of The Bride and its 1995 sequel followed Martin’s George Banks as he gave away his daughter and then had to learn to accept that she was now a woman. The third instalment was said to shift the focus to his son, Matty (originally played by Kieran Culkin), who’s now 29 and lets his parents know he intends to marry the son of a Navy SEAL.

It’s now difficult to say whether the film exists at all, or whether it’s just saying that Martin is involved is premature. Nikki Finke left Deadline, the website she founded, under rather acrimonious circumstances last year, saying she was going to build a new site that would leave her old one in the dust. However the insider exclusives that made Deadline both loved and hated by Hollywood have been rather thin on the ground for her new site, so she may have been jumping the gun here.
