Harrison Ford & Gavin Hood Defend Ender’s Game Against Author’s Anti-Gay Views

October 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Enders-Game-Poster1A few months ago there was much talk of a boycott of the movie version of Ender’s Game, due the the fact the author of the book the film is based on, Orson Scott Card, has voiced extremely anti-gay views and been at the front of the fight against gay marriage.

It’s cast a bit of a pall over the marketing of the movie, and often felt slightly like the elephant in the room. The filmmakers have already distanced themselves from Card (the author will have nothing to do with the promotion of the movie), and now director Gavin Hood and star Harrison Ford have once more felt the need to speak out against Card at a promotional event for the movie in London.

Gavin Hood said (via The Guardian), “It’s well known Orson Scott Card and I have different views on the issue of gay marriage and gay rights … It has been a real dilemma for me: I love the book Ender’s Game, it’s all about tolerance and compassion, and understanding the other. When I first read the book I was deeply moved by a story aimed at young people that I could share with my children and access ideas in a way that was exciting for them, and yet allowed us to talk about compassion, tolerance, diplomacy, even.

“The themes of the novel are so important to me – drone warfare, the way games and reality merge in the modern world, the way we hide behind a computer screen, that young people are seduced into war – and I love them from the book. It’s very difficult for me to reconcile that with his clearly contrary views to the ones I hold on the issue of gay rights.

“Should I not have made the film because of his views? I wrestled with that, and you know what? I thought: if I don’t put these ideas out on screen we wouldn’t be having this conversation. We are having this conversation precisely because the themes of the book are at odds with his current ideas. I’m very proud of the film, and I felt strongly that I didn’t want to lose my love of this book because its creator seems to be in a different zone to me on this issue.”

“It’s hard. We love the music of Richard Wagner, but he was a deep antisemite. I love Braveheart, but I don’t like what Mel Gibson has been saying about Jewish people. Art and their creators often diverge. Art is an expression of our higher selves and we who make art don’t always measure up to the art we create.”

Ford added, “This movie doesn’t address any of those issues [gay rights]. It was written 28 years ago; it’s a very impressive act of imagination that he could predict the internet, and that he could predict drone warfare … There is nothing in the film or the book addressing his current dispositions, or prejudices. We care about the positive aspects of the story we are telling.”

You can understand where they’re coming from, but the worry has always been that Card is likely to have a deal where he gets paid bonuses based on how much the movie grosses, so going to see the film could inadvertently fund the author’s anti-gay activities. Some still plan to continue with the boycott, while some have suggested watching the film but doing a kind of offset by donating to pro-gay charities. Others however agree that the film should be divorced from its creator and we should see them as two separate entities.

Will Channing Tatum Star In A Gay Rom-Com From Bridesmaids Director Paul Feig?

October 13, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

channing-tatum-vanity-fair2-thumb
This is one of those comments a director makes that may be getting taken out of context and turned into something that sounds far more likely to happen than is actually is, but Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig has suggested he’s planning to make a gay romantic comedy with Channing Tatum and SNL’s John Milhiser set to star.

Milhiser will play a normal guy who starts dating someone who’s as crazily hot as Tatum. That might sound great, but the average Joe finds is hard to cope. The movie was apparently originally written for a heterosexual couple, with Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm attached to star at one point, however things have since changed.

Before you get too full-on excited about Tatum finally getting gay, Cinema Blend, who broke the story not that the actor’s reps have ’emphasized that Feig’s enthusiasm does not mean anything is actually happening yet’. So at the moment it’s just a possibility.

It would be great to see a mainstream project with well known names involved, where the characters just happened to be gay, rather than it having to be one of the main points of the movie. After all, why not?

At the moment though we’ll have to wait and see if it becomes a reality.

Heterosexual Jill Trailer – Dating another woman to prove you’re straight

October 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Filmmaker/Actress Michelle Ehlen follows up her movie Butch Jamie with the movie Heterosexual Jill. Ehlen has recently been talking about the film with Huffington Post, and alongside that comes the trailer.

In the movie, ‘A woman, Jill, asks her female ex-lover, Jamie, if they can date each other again just so that Jill can prove to herself that she is no longer attracted to Jamie and therefore no longer a lesbian. Jamie agrees.’

The director says of her film, “I like to think there’s an underlying theme in my films of living a more authentic life. Once you get over the idea of who you think you are or should be, you can begin to move toward a more genuine and three-dimensional experience.”

Heterosexual Jill is now screening at film festivals, following its premiere at the Frameline Film Festival. Ehlen plans to follow the movie with a third film, S&M Sally. It’s well worth reading the interview with Ehlen over at Huffpo. [Read more…]

Jonathan Groff Gets Into Leather On The Set Of HBO’s Gay Series, Looking

HBO’s series about gay men living in San Francisco is currently shooting, and now we’ve got the first few pictures from the set, including Jonathan Groff rocking the leather look, which seems to be part of a sequence were he attends a Pride parade.

Other pics show off a moment from the third episode (the one where they’re sitting on a sofa), as well as Groff in bed with the show’s creator Michael Lannan. You’ll be able to get more from the set if you follow Lannan and cinematographer Reed Morano’s Instagram accounts.

The show is said to be a mix of Tales From The City and Girls, following mainly gay men in San Francisco. Groff plays Patrick, who’s professionally very successful as a video game developer, but his personal life is a bit of a disaster area. Frankie Alvarez is Patrick’s best friend, Augustin, whose ego and feisty politics make it difficult for him to settle down with a boyfriend. Russell Tovey also star. It’s not clear yet when we’ll be able to see the show.

Matthew McConaughey Gets A New Poster & Clips From Dallas Buyer’s Club

October 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dallas-buyers-club-poster
There’s already Oscar buzz surrounding Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyer’s Club, and not just because of his dramatic weight loss to play AIDS patient Ron Woodroof. Now a new poster for the movie has been released, along with a couple of new clips, including one that focuses on Jared Leto’s gay, cross-dressing character.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Matthew McConaughey stars in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB as real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, whose free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive and given 30 days to live. These were the early days of the AIDS epidemic, and the U.S. was divided over how to combat the virus. Ron, now shunned and ostracized by many of his old friends, and bereft of government-approved effective medicines, decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Bypassing the establishment, the entrepreneurial Woodroof joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts – who he once would have shunned – and established a hugely successful “buyers’ club.” Their shared struggle for dignity and acceptance is a uniquely American story of the transformative power of resilience.’

The film opens in select US theatres on Friday, November 1st, with a February UK release planned.

Lee Daniels Wants To Make A Gay, Interracial Action Movie Starring Alex Pettyfer

October 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Alex Pettyfer in Magic Mike

Alex Pettyfer

The Butler’s Lee Daniels is a gay, African-American filmmaker, however his films so far, such as Precious and The Paperboy, haven’t really explored his gay side that deeply (although all have definitely been informed by his queer point of view and experiences growing up).

Now Daniels says he wants to bring the two things together with a gay, interracial action film, which he wants Alex Pettyfer to star in. The director told Out, “Alex Pettyfer is in it, [but] I have to find the right black guy opposite him. He’s so hot, isn’t he? So hot. And so aware of his hotness in a way that’s so…I love him to death.”

However he does rather spoil the film’s big twist by saying the movie is like, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith but the two good-looking guys as the action heroes. We don’t find out they’re gay until the end of the movie.”

It’ll be tough to get it made, as all the studios turned down Behind The Candelabra, despite the fact it only cost a few million and had Matt Damon and Michael Douglas set to star. Whether they’ll want to pay a lot more for a gay-themed action flick is tough to guess.

Daniels seems to think he can make it happen though, saying, “I don’t think I’m going to have a problem now. I made a $100 million for The Butler. I’m in a rare group. So this is something I feel good about.”

The director has other reasons to feel happy at the moment, as it’s been announced that Daniels will receive Outfest’s Visionary Award in recognition of his contribution to LGBT arts and media visibility.

“I am extremely flattered and humbled to be receiving this year’s Visionary Award,” said Lee. “Outfest is an extraordinary organization, and I cannot stress enough the importance of its mission. In both my professional and personal life, I constantly strive to represent and provide a voice for the LGBT community, and am so honored that the Legacy Awards have selected me as this year’s recipient.”

Josh Hutcherson Says He’s ‘Mostly Straight’ But Isn’t Ruling Anything Out

October 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

josh-hutcherson-outOver the last couple of years 20-year-old Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson has earned many plaudits for his support for LGBT causes, including co-founding Straight But Not Narrow, which aims to build gay-straight alliances in schools. Now he’s been talking to Out about his own sexuality, and shows a very enlightened view.

“I would probably list myself as mostly straight,” Hutcherson says. “Maybe I could say right now I’m 100% straight. But who knows? In a f**king year, I could meet a guy and be like, Whoa, I’m attracted to this person.”

“I’ve met guys all the time that I’m like, Damn, that’s a good-looking guy, you know? I’ve never been, like, Oh, I want to kiss that guy. I really love women. But I think defining yourself as 100% anything is kind of near-sighted and close-minded.”

It also seems he’d be into a Hunger Game threesome between his character and those of Jennifer Lawrence and Sam Claflin. “I know Peeta would be into it, for sure. He’s very sensitive, in touch with his emotions,” he says. “I think it really might solve a lot of their problems. You know what? I’m going to pitch that idea. Let’s make it a—what’s it called when three people are in a relationship together? A triad? That’ll go over well with Middle America.”

Hutcherson had two gay uncles who died of AIDS and his mother has also advocated for LGBT causes, so the young man was certainly primed to help make a stand. We’re glad he’d decided to be so open and proactive! He’ll next be seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which is out November 22nd.

Take a look below for some great pics from his Out shoot. He’s certainly looking good! [Read more…]

T.R. Knight Marries His Boyfriend In An Intimate Ceremony (Attended By Katherine Heigl)

October 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tr-knight-patrick-husbandFormer Grey’s Anatomy star T.R. Knight got married to his partner, Patrick, last Friday in an intimate ceremony in upstate New York. The couple have been together for the last three years.

Katherine Heigl was in attendance, and she’s been keen to prove it, tweeting a couple of images from the shindig, which also reveal that fellow Grey’s Alum Kate Walsh was in attendance. You can see those pics below.

Since Grey’s Knight has had a recurring role on The Good Wife and appeared in the feature film 42. Mostly though he’s been on stage. He is currently starring alongside actors Elizabeth Olsen, Daphne Rubin-Vega and William Hurt as Mercutio in the Classic Stage Company’s off-Broadway production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet in New York City.

Knight’s time on Grey’s Anatomy was marked by controversy after co-star Isaiah Washington referred to him as a ‘fag’ on the set. This gave him the impetus to come out. He left the show after five seasons, followed shortly by BFF Heigl.

New Clip Of Daniel Radcliffe & Dane DeHaan In Kill Your Darlings Emerges

October 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After months of waiting, it’s not too long before we’ll all get to see Daniel Radcliffe as gay poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, with the US release set for October 16th and the UK release recently shifted to December 6th.

Now a new clip from the film has emerged (via Out), showing off the chemistry between Radcliffe and Dan DeHaan, who plays Lucien Carr’s the object of Radcliffe’s affection in the movie. Take a look above.

Based on a true story, Kill Your Darlings charts how a murder helped shape the lives of a group of young men who went on to become the beat generation. DeHaan plays Lucien Carr, the man who introduced Howl writer Allen Ginsberg (Radcliffe) to the likes of William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster) and Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston).

During these early, hedonistic days, a man called David Kammerer (Michael C. Hall) fell for Carr, with his infatuation becoming increasingly obsessive and unhinged – the gay Ginsberg once discovered Kammerer trying to murder Jack Kerouac’s cat. It eventually resulted in Carr stabbing Kammerer to death him and going to prison for his murder. The violent event is said to have indelibly changed all the people involved and etched its way into the published works of the Beat writers. You can watch the trailer here. [Read more…]
