Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait Of James Dean UK Trailer – How queer was the legend?

February 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

James Dean’s sexuality has always been a matter of intense speculation. For everyone who’s come forward to say he was exclusively gay (and if Paul Alexander’s book Boulevard Of Broken Dreams is to be believed, a major masochist) there’s another who insists he was completely straight. One person says his relationship with Pier Angeli was real and her heartbreak eventually led to her suicide, while others says she was purely a beard and well aware of that fact.

We’re unlikely to ever known the full truth of whether Dean was gay, straight or bisexual, but the film Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait Of James Dean delves into the murky waters of the legend’s sexuality and speculates on the truth.

A May 13th UK DVD release has now been set and a trailer released, which you can see above.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed by Matthew Mishory and starring James Preston & Dan Glenn JOSHUA TREE 1951 follows James Dean (the handsome James Preston) on his first steps to becoming the international icon of youth and rebellion. The film is a series of revealing and sometimes dreamlike vignettes that blend autobiographical and fictionalised elements to present a pivotal moment in a remarkable life.

‘We follow Jimmy Dean during two periods of his life prior to becoming the international star that we all know today. In 1949, he joins UCLA as an acting major, a decision which ultimately estranged him from his father. Whilst there he wrestles with the mental and sexual constraints and boundaries of society and while demonstrating great acting skills he rebels against the system he finds himself within. Whilst in California he also starts to experiment with his sexuality, and finds solace in the beds of both men and women.

‘The film’s ‘present tense’ is in 1951, as Dean drives to the desert of Joshua Tree, California. Along for the ride is The Roommate (Dan Glenn), a struggling actor who lived and loved with Dean whilst at college. The friendship and intimacy he provides gives Dean a sense of security before embarking on his own path. Matthew Mishory presents his first feature; a brutal and honest exploration of Dean’s complicated sexuality and formative relationships; JOSHUA TREE, 1951 redefines the boy behind the image for a new generation.’joshua-tree-1951

Sexual Assault Lawsuit Against John Travolta Dropped By Former Cruise Ship Employee

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John-TravoltaLast year it seemed barely a week could go by without a man coming forward to claim sexual assault against John Travolta. However while a series of suits by male masseurs were dropped (largely due to the fact that it was discovered that when one of the assaults was initially said to have taken place, the actor was on the other side of the country), one lived on, from a former cruise ship employee who said Travolta assaulted him aboard a ship in 2009.

However now this claim has been dropped, shortly after a judge denied Travolta’s attempts to get the case put into private arbitration, rather than being dealt with in open court. The denial was a victory for the claimant, Fabian Zanzi, but shortly afterwards he dropped the lawsuit entirely. There’s been no official statement on why he decided to give up, although some have suggested it’s because he can’t afford the costs of a full trial, while others have alleged the whole thing was an attempt to get money from Travolta, and now that Zanzi’s realised he isn’t going to get a quick payment, he’s decided to drop it.

Zanzi had claimed that he was assigned to bring food to Travolta, at which point the actor asked for a neck massage. The steward agreed but said that when he reached for Travolta’s neck, the star took off his robe and forcefully hugged him. He also alleged that Travolta told that he was “Beautiful” and said, “Take me, I will take care of you, please.”

After he says he reported the incident, he claimed Travolta offered him $12,000 to keep his mouth shut, and his employers, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, refused to do anything.

Travolta’s attorney, Marty Singer, commented to RadarOnline.com: “My client and our firm are very pleased that Mr. Zanzi has agreed to dismiss the lawsuit.”

Walt Disney World Gets Its First Openly Gay President

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

george-kalogridisWalt Disney World now has a gay President (while that sort of sounds like the theme park has seceded from the rest of the US, we just mean the type of President businesses have – he’s not trying to rival Obama). Last Friday George Kalogridis was put in charge of Disney World, where he’ll oversee oversee more than 66,000 employees.

Kalogridis is a Disney World veteran becoming one of its first employees when he was hired, aged 17, to bus tables on the park’s opening in 1971. He worked his way up the ranks and before getting the job as head of Disney’s biggest park he’s put in time as President of Disneyland in Anaheim, California and Chief Operating Officer of Disneyland Resort Paris.

59-year-old Kalogridis commented to the Orlando Sentinel, “The first thing I see is one big word: humility. This is a very, very big place, and having been able to see it from Day 1 and to see it now — truly, you have to respect just how incredible this project is.”

Kalogridis and his partner of 12 years, Andy Hardy, are now busy making Florida their home, building a house in Golden Oak, the luxury are that Disney World is developing on its 40-square mile property.

Disney World is the most-visited entertainment resort in the world, with four theme parks, two water parks, 24,000 hotel rooms, 3,000 time-share suites, a 120-acre retail complex and a 230-acre sports campus.

Matt Bomer Gets His Period Drama On In A Winter’s Tale Snaps

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Winters-Tale-Matt-BomerMatt Bomer is part of a great ensemble who’ve got together for Akiva Goldsman’s directorial debut, A Winter’s Tale, including Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint and Kevin Corrigan, with Will Smith also rumoured for a cameo.

The film is now shooting and Filmofilia has gotten hold of some shots from the set, including out first look at the openly gay Bomer getting all togged up in period suit and tie, as well as rocking a beard that may not be his greatest look ever.

Based on Mark Helprin’s novel, A Winter’s Tale is set in both the present day and the late 19th century, and centres on a thief (Farrell) who falls in love with the Irish heiress (Jessica Brown Findlay) he just robbed, right before she dies. He later learns that he possesses the gift of reincarnation, and becomes determined to save her life.

Bomer is set to play the thief’s father (which is slightly odd as he’s actually younger than Farrell, but we’ll have to wait and see how it works).

New Pic Of Matt Damon & Michael Douglas In Liberace Biopic Behind The Candelabra

February 7, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

behind-the-candelabra-newThe anticipation is growing for Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic Behind The Candelabra, which is due to air on HBO in the US in May and should reach the UK shortly afterwards. Now THR has debuted a new pic from the film, which features Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

Although we’ve seen a couple of pics promoting the film before (taken from an HBO promo video), this is billed as the first official image.

The film concentrates on the flamboyant pianist’s relationship with the much younger Scotty Thorson between 1917 and 1982. Liberace was famously closeted – insisting publicly he just hadn’t found the right girl – but his secret threatened to be exposed after he split with Thorson, when the younger man sued him for alimony.

While talking about the movie the stars and director have promised that the movie doesn’t shy away from the sexual side of the men’s relationship. Indeed Soderbergh has suggested that the reason it ended up at HBO was because the the major studios are still afraid of anything that’s unapologetically gay.

Take a look at the new pic above.

What’s Up For The Teddy Queer Film Award At This Year’s Berlin Film Festival?

February 4, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

teddy-award-logoThe Berlin Film Festival is one of the most important movie gatherings in the world, not just for the festival itself but also for the film market, where all sorts of films seek funding and distribution. It’s also home to the Teddy Award, which since its inception in 1987 has emerged has one of the most prestigious LGBT movie awards in the world.

Previous winners include Ira Sachs’ excellent Keep The Lights On, Marco Berger’s Absent, Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig And The Angry Inch.

This year’s Berlin Film Festival kicks off on February 7th, with the Teddy Award programme running alongside the main fest until February 17th. The Teddys culminate in the handing out of the awards in categories including Best Feature, Best Documentary and Best Short.

So what films will be showing this year, which hopefully we’ll get to see ourselves if and when they find distribution around the world?

james-franco-interior-leather-barFilms include the much hyped Interior Leather Bar, James Franco and Travis Mathews’ film about recreating 40-minutes of gay S&M that were allegedly cut from the 1980 Al Pacino movie, Cruising. There’s also Angela Christlieb’s Naked Opera, about a wealthy but terminally ill man, Marc, who travels the world to places where Mozart’s Don Giovanni is being staged and takes on a young male lover in each city.

The directors of Call Me Kuchu return with Born This Way, about the lives of men who are part of Cameroon’s underground gay culture. The Korean White Night is about two men whose lives are a series of fleeting moments. They agree to meet in Seoul but only have a few hours together. Free Fall meanwhile is about a man who finds himself torn between his pregnant girlfriend and the exciting new feelings he develops for a fellow policeman.

portrait-of-jasonDaniel Young’s Paul Bowles: The Case Door Is Always Open casts its light on a lesser known Beat generation writer, the titular Bowles, who was publicity shy and gay, but married a lesbian and decided to move permanently to Tangiers. There’s also the premiere of a restoration of 1967’s Portrait Of Jason, seen as one of the first unapologetic looks at a gay man, following the life of black, gay, self-declared hustler.

You can take a look at all the films that will be showing over on the Teddy website.

ParaNorman’s Chris Butler Talks About Creating The First Gay Character In Mainstream Animation

February 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paranorman-slideAlthough it’s only a brief joke at the end of the movie, Paranorman has been praised in many circles for bringing us what’s believed to be the first gay character in mainstream animation. Now screenwriter/co-director Chris Butler (who’s gay himself) has been talking to AfterElton about the movie and its gay character.

When asked about why he decided to reveal at the end that buff jock Mitch is gay, Butler says, “There are very good reasons why it was left to the end. The main thing being that the most important theme in the movie is about not judging a book by its cover. In fact, it’s a literal plot element in the movie. There is a book that’s judged! I wanted to make every character in the movie guilty of judging someone else, usually misjudging. That’s all of the characters, the good ones, the bad ones. It’s every character. They all look at someone else, think they know who they are without getting into a conversation with them, and judges them. I wanted to make the audience complicit in that. It’s not just Mitch; there are plenty of stereotypes that are presented in this movie. As soon as you see anything, you think, “I know that character. I’ve seen this before.” That was the fun thing for me. It was saying, “Yes, you’re watching this movie where all these people are learning not to judge each other, but hopefully you are too.” This stereotypically macho jock who you’ve seen in every teen slasher movie, you think he’s straight and he’s going to get the girl. But you don’t know him! You don’t know who he is. That was important to leave for the end. Plus, I thought it was a funny joke.”

chris-butler-paranormanBut was there any resistance from the studio about including a gay character in a family film? “Honestly? I never had any resistance from the studio,” Butler says, “That’s what’s really special about Laika [ParaNorman‘s animation studio]. I don’t think there’s any kind of agenda going on, but I think that Laika is brave and wants to create movies, tell stories that maybe no one else is doing right now. I think it’s them a really exciting place. That’s not to say — we did Coraline, and while that broke many of the formulaic boundaries of kids’ movies and in some ways it’s more terrifying than ParaNorman — but that’s not to say what we’re all about. What it says is that Laika is bold and willing to go there. There are plenty of things being developed at the studio that are really exciting because the other studios aren’t making them. They’re not the creepy-movie-for-kids studio. We are maybe the studio that is taking more chances creatively and that is exciting.”

Benedict Cumberbatch Taking On Gay Scientist Alan Turing In Imitation Game

February 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Benedict-CumberbatchAlthough everyone seems to agree that making a movie about Alan Turing is a good idea, it’s been tough to bring The Imitation Game to the big screen. Leo DiCaprio flirted with the lead role and the likes of J Blakeson have come and gone from the directing chair.

Most recently Headhunters helmer Morten Tyldum stepped up to helm and now he may have found his Turing in the form of Benedict Cumberbatch.

Turing is famed for helping the Allies defeat the Germans in World War II by breaking codes and building machines that were the forerunners of modern computers (which were based on his theories). However, in the 1950s he was prosecuted by the British government for being gay.

Turing made the extreme decision to undergo chemical castration instead of going to prison. In 1954 he died from cyanide poisoning, with many believing he killed himself by dosing an apple with the substance (although there are still come who believe it was accidental).

Graham Moore wrote the screenplay, which landed atop the Black List in 2011. There’s no studio attached yet, but the hope is they’ll get all the financing sorted once Cumberbatch officially signs on. (Source: Deadline)
