Magic Mike Actors Strip For EW Cover – And Matthew McConaughey is down with the gays

May 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Magic Mike hitting the US on June 29th and the UK on July 13th, many a gay man and straight woman is already in paroxysms of excitement over the likes of Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello getting their stripper on!

The boys have stripped down for the latest cover of EW, which you can see above. Hopefully it’ll satiate your desire for male celebrity flesh until the movie hits cinemas (or you can watch the Magic Mike trailer here)!

Matthew McConaughey has also been chatting to The Advocate, and telling them he’s more than happy with the attentions of gay men. When asked when he first realised he had a gay audience, he says “I know exactly when. It was about 1995, I go into a coffee shop on Santa Monica Boulevard, and the guy behind the counter has a picture of me from Boys on the Side (pictured) taped to the tip jar. Is that not classic? I gave that guy a big tip.”

As for his first exposure to gay people, he comments, “In high school I was a jock, popular, good-looking, in student council, had a girlfriend — I was that guy. But I also had a friend who was a gay gothic chick, so she was outcast because she was gay and because she was goth with the tattoos and the piercings. But she was also really fuckin’ cool and smart. I would always invite her out with my group, but it was hard for her to come on her own, so mostly we would hang out separately. So I crossed the tracks back and forth with her.”

He adds, “I’ve had some great conversations with a lot of gay people about being gay, when they knew, how they came out, and how they live. I’ve also talked to some gay people who aren’t yet comfortable coming out, and boy, that’s got to be more than a daily fuckin’ headache. What a weight to carry on your shoulders. It’s all very interesting to me on a human level, because we’re all in this together.”

But of course the important important question, just how sexy is his Magic Mike strip? “It wasn’t in the script,” he says, “But Soderbergh said in the beginning that if it felt right, I could strip at the end of the movie. I said, ‘I gotta dance, man.’ I would regret it for the rest of my life if I was in a male stripper movie and didn’t get up there and strip myself.”

You can read the full and frank interview over at The Advocate.

LA Masseur Hires Gloria Allred To Sue John Travolta

May 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday it looked like the lawsuits involving John Travolta allegedly sexually assaulting male masseurs seemed to be on their last legs. With the LA masseur whose initial complaint sparked the furore withdrawing his lawsuit and the second claimant seemingly looking for a quick payout.

However it appears it was just a lull, as while the first masseur withdrew his suit and parted company with his lawyer, he’s now hired famed attorney Gloria Allred to fight his case. Travolta’s lawyer may have said the lawsuit being dropped ‘completely vindicated’ his client, but the masseur had his case dismissed without prejudice, meaning he is free to refile it (presumably with a changed date, as it had become clear that on the day he initially said the assault took place, Travolta was in New York rather than LA).

Allred is well known for taking controversial, media friendly cases, where she fights the cause as much on TV and in newspapers as in court. She told Radar Online, “I represent John Doe #1 [the LA masseur’s]. Mr. Doe’s lawsuit was dismissed without prejudice which means that he is still legally entitled to file another lawsuit against John Travolta if he chooses. We are in the process of conferring with him regarding the next steps, which he may wish to take. Our client and our firm has no further comment at this time.”

It would suggest there’s more to this case than we know, as Allred is unlikely to have taken it on unless she thought there was some chance of proving the allegations, which have been severely undermined by the confusion over the date. We’ll have to wait to see whether the case is refiled and makes it to court, or if Travolta manages to bury it.

Outfest Announces Opening Night Gala For Vito & Honour For John Waters

May 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

LA’s Outfest is one of the biggest and best LGBT film festivals in the world. This year it celebrates its 30th Anniversary with 143 films from 24 different countries along with exciting panels and parties. It’s now been announced the film will get its opening night gala, Vito, while John Waters will receive Outfest’s Achievement Award at the event.

Jeffrey Schwarz’s Vito is a documentary about Vito Russo, who was one of the founding father of the gay liberation movement and a vociferous AIDS activist in the 1980s. He’s probably best known as the author of The Celluloid Closet, about Hollywood’s treatment of gay characters over the years, a book he used to highlight the intolerance ingrained in American culture. During the 80s AIDS crisis, he helped found ACT UP – the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power – which was instrumental in changing attitudes to the disease and empowering gay people to fight for justice. Russo died from AIDS-related complications in 1990. He was an incredible person and more than deserves a film biography.

John Waters meanwhile is, of course, the underground filmmaker whose 70s films such as Mondo Trasho and Pink Flamingos offered a camp, in-your-face gay sensibility when films made from an overtly LGBT perspective were almost non-existent. He went on to helm camp classics such as Hairspray and Serial Mom, and has been an inspiration to generations of indie filmmakers – gay and straight – for showing that you can make films from a very individual perspective that pay no attention to either Hollywood mores or the art film world.

It should be a great Outfest event and it make us sad we won’t be in LA on July 12th, 2012 to see it! The rest of the festival’s line-up is announced June 4th, so make sure you head over to the Outfest website then to see what’s on.

Masseur Drops John Travolta Sexual Assault Claim

May 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first of two masseurs who lodged sexual assault claims against John Travolta has dropped his case. He’d already lost his lawyer after it became clear that Travolta wasn’t even in LA when the assault supposedly took place. Although the masseur initially said he would continue with his claim and that he’d merely been mistaken about the exact day it happened, it appears he’s realised that if he couldn’t even get something as simple as the date right, it’s unlikely he could now succeed in the rest of his claim.

Travolta’s lawyer released a statement saying that actor has been “completely vindicated” by the dismissal of the first complaint. Marty Singer said he expected his client to “similarly be vindicated” with regards to the second claimant, referred to in documents as John Doe No 2.

The first masseur had claimed that on January 16th, Travolta booked a massage, then asked for sex, got rebuffed, volunteered to jerk the masseur off, touched the man’s penis without permission and masturbated.

The second claim, which involves allegations the actor tried to forces the masseur to touch his anus, is currently still going forward. However it’s difficult to see it succeeding, as one claim was essentially backing up the other with little direct evidence for either. Indeed it seems the claimant it already looking for a quick way out (and a quick payout), with his lawyer saying the masseur is willing to drop the case for $250,000. It’s still unlikely he’ll get it though, unless Travolta sees no other way to make the allegations and public scrutiny go away quickly.

Passion Poster – Rachel McAdams & Noomi Rapace lock lips

May 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

They’re really playing up the potential lesbian undertones of Passion, although I have a horrible feeling it’s more to appeal to the baser instincts of straight men than because this will actually be a good depiction of women’s desire. Hopefully I’m wrong, but the fact that both the first poster and the first image both see Noomi Rapace and Rachel McAdams about to kiss does suggest this is more about men’s desire than women’s.

The poster was released ahead of the movie looking for international distributors at Cannes.

Based on Alain Corneau’s film Crime d’amour, Passion is ‘An erotic thriller in the tradition of “Dressed To Kill” and “Basic Instinct” [neither of which were exactly great depictions of the LGBTQ community], Brian de Palma’s PASSION tells the story of a deadly power struggle between two women in the dog-eat-dog world of international business. Christine possesses the natural elegance and casual ease associated with one who has a healthy relationship with money and power. Innocent, lovely and easily exploited, her admiring protégé Isabelle is full of cutting-edge ideas that Christine has no qualms about stealing. They’re on the same team, after all… Christine takes pleasure in exercising control over the younger woman, leading her one step at a time ever deeper into a game of seduction and manipulation, dominance and humiliation. But when Isabelle falls into bed with one of Christine’s lovers, war breaks out. On the night of the murder, Isabelle is at the ballet, while Christine receives an invitation to seduction. From whom? Christine loves surprises. Naked she goes to meet the mystery lover waiting in her bedroom…’

The We And The I Trailer – A suggestion of queer content in Michel Gondry’s latest

May 16, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Michel Gondry gained a lot of fans thanks to the quirky, indie sensibility of Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind, his entry into the mainstream with The Green Hornet wasn’t a great success. However now he’s going back to decidedly indie territory with The We And The I, which follows a group of inner city high school bus passengers on their way home to start summer vacation. It look like it could be an interesting character piece and a more serious film from Gondry than we’ve seen before. It also seems the film could have a bit of gay content, with two boys and two girls briefly kissing in the trailer.

Gay Filmmaker Rob Williams Selected as Kashish 2012’s Filmmaker in Focus

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Writer-director Rob Williams has been selected for this year’s ‘Filmmaker in Focus’ honour from the KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, being held in Mumbai, India, from May 23rd-27th.

Williams will attend the festival and present three of his most popular films – Long-Term Relationship, Make the Yuletide Gay and Role/Play – in addition to participating in Q&A sessions for those films and a special panel discussion titled ‘The Pink Screen’. The festival will also will screen Regrets, an award-winning short film for which Williams wrote the script.

Williams established Guest House Films, a Los Angeles-based film production and distribution house, with his partner Rodney Johnson in 2005. Since then, he has written, directed and produced five films and recently ventured into distribution with the US release of Black Briefs, the first DVD in a new short-film compilation series.

“I am tremendously honored to be recognised by the KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival for my body of work, and I really look forward to visiting India for the first time and experiencing everything that the country has to offer,” said Williams.

This year is shaping up to be extremely busy for Williams. In May, Guest House Films will start production on The Men Next Door, the sixth film written and directed by Williams; in June, Guest House Films will release its second short-film compilation, Blue Briefs; and the company will be screening the heartwarming Australian documentary, The Doctor’s Wife, at film festivals throughout the year.

Will Smith Praises Obama’s Equal Marriage Stance

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since President Obama publicly stated last week that he supported marriage equality for gay couples, people have been queuing up to both praise and condemn him. While some say it could cost him votes, others say it could gain him some. Either way, there’s no doubt that it’s been a massive boon to his campaign coffers.

It’s been seen by many wavering Democrats as a reaffirmation that Obama truly believes in things, after four years where many feel like he’s been dragging his heels and not showing clear leadership on social reform. Indeed it came shortly before what turned out to be the biggest fund-raising dinner in history, with Barack bagging $15 million in Hollywood at the weekend, something most don’t believe is a coincidence.

As you’d expect, the likes of George Clooney and Dustin Lance Black were very happy with Obama’s statement, and now Will Smith has joined them, telling reporters in Berlin that he backed up Barack Obama’s personal pledge of support to same sex marriage, saying it was “brave” given that it is an election year. Smith added, “If anybody can find someone to love them and to help them through this difficult thing that we call life, I support that in any shape or form.”

Personally we think Obama’s mvie was a pretty savvy one, as it’ll raise funds and the only people it’s really likely to anger wouldn’t vote for him anyway. However there are likely to be thousands who’ve become disillusioned in the last four years and may have been wavering in their loyalty or who may not have voted at all, but who might now feel energised all over again. It was undoubtedly a political move, but it has to be good news.

First Clip & Trailer From The New Normal, Ryan Murphy’s Gay Sitcom

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of days ago we brought you the first couple of images from The New Normal, Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s gay-themed TV comedy, which is due to start airing in the US this autumn (and will hopefully arrive over here not long afterwards). In order to try and get audiences – and potential advertisers – excited, NBC has released a lengthy trailer and the first clip from the show, which you can see above and below.

The New Normal revolves around a blended family of a gay couple (Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha) and the woman (Georgia King) who becomes a surrogate for them as they grow their family. Ellen Barkin co-stars with Nene Leakes on board as recurring characters.

Do you think it looks fun? Do you reckon it’ll find it tough to find an audience? Let us know below.

Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas Sizzle Reel – Plus your chance to help get the film made

May 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Crowdsourcing funding for indie movies is really shaking up the film world, giving flicks a chance that would find it tough to get their budget from traditional sources. One currently looking for funding is Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas, a bosom-buddy film that inverts the typical characterisations and gender roles that we’ve come to expect from Westerns and road movies. It’s currently in the midst of a cash-raising drive on indiegogo in a bid to try and get the movie made.

To tempt potential backers a trailer has been released. You can take a look at that above and then head over to Bruno & Earlene Go To Vegas’s indiegogo page to pledge some cash – you can give anything from $15 upwards, with various inducements on offer depending on how much you give. If you’ve got more than $1,000, you could even be an associate producer!

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When old friend Earlene turns up on the doorstep of ’extremities model’ (hands and feet) Krista in Los Angeles, a spark is ignited that inspires them to take a trip to their dream destination of Paris. Problem is, they’re out of cash, and instead wind up in a gold-mining village in the Nevada desert, populated by a host of Las Vegas escapees – a pair of Chippendales, a drag queen, a sheriff and an ex-Showgirl. For a short while this eclectic community provide cover, but on the run from the cops, a plastic surgeon with a vengeance, and the queen of California’s underground ‘alternative’ gentlemen’s clubs, the two women must prepare for battle. But before doing so, Earlene must come to terms with a hidden truth about Krista’s past… as Bruno.’

So go give some money and let’s get the film made and finished!
