New The Girl In The Spider’s Web Trailer – Claire Foy becomes Lisbeth Salander

September 24, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ever since David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Sony has said they were going to produce a sequel, but they took a long time to decide exactly what they were going to do. Now it’s on its way, with Rooney Mara gone and The Crown actress Claire Foy taking over as Lisbeth Salander in a role that’s very different from her Netflix series persona.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Lisbeth Salander, the cult figure and title character of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, will return to the screen in The Girl in the Spider’s Web, a first-time adaptation of the recent global bestseller. Golden Globe winner Claire Foy, the star of “The Crown,” will play the outcast vigilante defender under the direction of Fede Alvarez, the director of 2016’s breakout thriller Don’t Breathe; the screenplay adaptation is by Steven Knight and Fede Alvarez & Jay Basu.’

The movie is due out Novermber 9th. Take a look at the trailer and first poster below. [Read more…]

Biopic Of Bisexual Singer Dusty Springfield Coming From Carol Screenwriter, Phyllis Nagy

September 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

In 1970 the Stonewall riots had only just happened and if you were famous – or wanted to stay that way – you didn’t even hint you were anything but straight. However, Dusty Springfield didn’t care about that. In 1970 the British singer, who’d already had vast success with songs like I Only Want to Be with You and Son Of A Preacher Man, came out as bisexual, telling the London Evening Standard that, “I know that I’m as perfectly capable of being swayed by a girl as by a boy.”

She is a fascinating figure, and now it looks like she’s getting a long overdue biopic, currently titled So Much Love. It doesn’t look like it will cover her whole life, instead concentrating on the period when she was recording her legendary 1968 album, Dusty In Memphis. The official synopsis (as reported by The Guardian) says, “It will follow her as she navigates her way through the politics of the recording studio and the city, and will also explore her encounter with the music of Motown, her stand against apartheid policies during her aborted South African tour and her thorny brushes with men in the music industry.”

Although that synopsis might typically make us thing the film would ignore her sexuality, the fact that it’ll be written and directed by Phyllis Nagy, who scored an Oscar-nominated for her screenplay for the decidedly queer, Carol, should mean it’ll be a better rounded portrait. Gemma Arterton has already been lined up to play Dusty.

The Their Finest and Prince Of Persia actress commented, “I have been an admirer of Dusty Springfield since I was a teenager: her effortless husky voice, the way she conveyed emotion through music, how she helped bring Motown to the UK. Dusty was ahead of her time in many ways and inspired so many future artists. She was generous, witty, mercurial, shy, extroverted and a true English eccentric. I simply cannot wait to play her.”

The film should shoot in the UK and US next year, and may be in cinemas by the end of 2019 (presumably hoping for an awards run).

Take A Look At The First Pic From Paul Verhoeven’s Lesbian Nun Film, Benedetta

September 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul Verhoeven spent a long time in Hollywood making the likes of RoboCop, Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct and Hollow Man. However, more recently he’s returned to Europe and found more artistic success (or at least interest) with Black Book and Elle. Now he’s taking on lesbian nuns, which would normally sound worrying exploitative from the man Showgirls, but it seems he’s taking it seriously.

The film is based on Judith C. Brown’s non-fiction book, Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy. Here’s the book’s synopsis: ‘Born of well-to-do parents, Benedetta Carlini entered the convent at the age of nine. At twenty-three, she began to have visions of both a religious and erotic nature. Benedetta was elected abbess due largely to these visions, but later aroused suspicions by claiming to have had supernatural contacts with Christ. During the course of an investigation, church authorities not only found that she had faked her visions and stigmata, but uncovered evidence of a lesbian affair with another nun, Bartolomeo. The story of the relationship between the two nuns and of Benedetta’s fall from an abbess to an outcast is revealed in surprisingly candid archival documents and retold here with a fine sense of drama.’

The first image from the movie has been released, which you can see above. It shows Virginie Efira as the title character, flanked by soldiers. Charlotte Rampling also stars. The movie is currently shooting in Italy, with plans for a 2019 release.

1985 Trailer – Gotham’s Cory Michael Smith stars in a black & white look at the early days of the AIDS crisis

September 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Malaysian born director Yen Tan has made several gay-themed films, but he’s certainly getting a lot more attention for 1985, the feature-length version of his own 2016 short film. Indeed, following its first film festival screenings, it currently has a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 16mm black and white movie follows, ‘A closeted young man goes who home for the holidays and struggles to reveal his dire circumstances to his conservative family.’ As you may have guessed by its title, 1985 takes us back to a world that was just hearing about HIV and AIDS for the first time, and where gay people who were just taking there first steps towards acceptance were suddenly faced with an immense, terrifying and largely unknowable threat.

A very good cast includes Cory Michael Smith, Virginia Madsen, Michael Chiklis and Jamie Chung. The movie is due in US cinemas on October 26th. No UK date is currently set. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

The Breeding Trailer – Not many gay-themed films have their lead actor facing murder charges

September 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

To be honest, there’d probably be less interest in The Breeding if it weren’t for the fact one of its leads, Marcus Bellamy, is facing murder charges. The film, from the makers of the web series Drama Queenz, was shortly shortly before the death of Bellamy’s boyfriend, who Marcus admitted killing in a Facebook post shortly after it happened.

The film is ‘An erotic thriller about a young artist whose obsession with a taboo fetish leads to life altering consequences.’ Obviously those behind it never knew how real-life events would overtake their movie.

Director Daniel Armando told Raynbowaffair, “Never could any of us have imagined that something like this would happen. Dane and Marcus went to high school together. Dane introduced Marcus to Manhattan when Marcus first started at Juilliard. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for Dane and everyone in the cast, reconciling what our friend has done and sending prayers to the family affected by the tragedy. We’re still piecing it all together and, more than anything, want to send positive love and light to everyone impacted.”

Take a look at the trailer below. The film started screening at select US cinemas last week and will be on VoD from September 11th. [Read more…]

Sauvage Trailer – The gay prostitute movie that divided Cannes

September 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

I’m always a bit dubious about reports that a film prompted walkouts, as it can’t help but sound like a marketing ploy. However, there were apparently quite a few people who didn’t get through to the end of the screenings of Sauvage at Cannes, due to its graphic approach to its story.

However, many of the reviewers who did watch it all the way through praised its honesty, even is they did say it’s sometimes tough to watch.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Leo is 22 and sells his body on the street for a bit of cash. The men come and go, and he stays right here – longing for love. He doesn’t know what the future will bring. He hits the road. His heart is pounding.’

No UK release date has currently been set. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

The Favourite Trailer – Olivia Colman & Emma Stone have a royal lesbian tryst

September 5, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After the recent screening of The Favourite in competition at the Venice Film Festival, Olivia Colman & Emma Stone couldn’t help but gush about how much fun they had having sex with one another. After being asked about the sexual politics of the 18th Century royal drama, Colman said, “Sexual politics? There was lots of it, and that’s good. That’s timeless, I suppose. That will always happen. It’s as though we think we invented sex, but we didn’t, it’s been going on for quite a long time. And it was awfully fun having sex with Emma Stone.”

Stone then replied, “It was really fun having sex with you too. It was very comfortable.”

Although just in case anyone took the comment a bit too literally, she said, “We didn’t really!”

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

The trailer for the movie has now arrived, which you can take a look at below. The Favourite is released in UK Cinemas on January 1st, 2019.

Teen Star Of Champions, Josie Totah, Comes Out As Transgender

August 21, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Josie Totah in Champions

If the NBC/Netflix show Champions got praise for anything, it was for the young actor playing Michael Patel, the gay teen dropped on the doorstep of the father and uncle he barely knew. The New York Times even said, “It’s a lot for a child character, but the young Mr. Totah is superb: His comic energy is astoundingly well calibrated, and he allows just enough genuine humanity to show through Michael’s haughty, campy fieriness.”

However, we now know that the Times, and indeed everyone else, has (inadvertantly) been using the wrong pronouns, as the actor who played Michael, Josie Totah, has revealed she is a transgender female and prefers her/she/hers.

Writing in Time, Josie refers to the fact many just assumed she was a cisgender young, gay man, saying that, “I feel like I let myself be shoved into a box: ‘J.J. Totah, gay boy’… In the past, I’ve halfway corrected people by telling them I identify as LGBTQ. I wasn’t ready to be more specific. I was afraid I wouldn’t be accepted, that I would be embarrassed, that the fans who knew me from the time when I acted in a Disney show would be confused. But I realized over the past few years that hiding my true self is not healthy. I know now, more than ever, that I’m finally ready to take this step toward becoming myself. I’m ready to be free. So, listen up y’all: You can jump on or jump off. Either way this is where I’m heading.

“My pronouns are she, her and hers. I identify as female, specifically as a transgender female. And my name is Josie Totah.”

She also talks about the impact watching the doc-series I Am Jazz had on her, which follows the life of trans teen Jazz Jennings. Josie also talks about how she is off to college, but also intends to keep acting.

Sadly that won’t include any more Champions, which was cancelled following its first season. You can read Josie’s full essay over at Time.

Former Disney & King Cobra Star Garrett Clayton Comes Out With Post About Bullying

August 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s been a bit of speculation about the sexuality of Garrett Clayton, the young actor who first got noticed in Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Party. Clayton has played several queer roles, most notably playing gay porn star Brent Corrigan in King Cobra, and on several occasions has suggested he’s gay, while refusing to actually say it – leading some to suggest he was the latest inhabitant of the glass closet.

Indeed, in 2016 he defended not coming out, saying, “I just don’t think it’s pertinent to talk about my personal life. I don’t think it adds to the work; it just distracts from it.”

However, he has now decided to come out publicly and reveal that he’s also in a long-term relationship. Writing on Instagram he says, “With the release of my new movie REACH coming up, I thought it was important to explain why I took on this project in the first place. REACH deals with some very serious and timely topics that have affected me personally, and have likely influenced many of your lives as well. (I also prefer to share things that are particularly important for me here on my IG) instead of in some random magazine or online article – because you are the ones that have been rooting for me and following me on my professional and personal journey in life.

When I read the script for REACH, I immediately knew it was a film I had to be a part of. I have personally dealt with suicide within my own family, intense bullying in high school, and – on top of it all – myself and the man I’ve been in a relationship with for a long time (@hrhblakeknight) have both experienced shootings within our hometown school systems, and have witnessed the heartache that takes place in affected communities after such tragic events. These topics – not always easy to discuss- are all close to my heart, and, knowing how serious they are, I wanted to share this with you all. This film has come from the perspectives of people who care deeply about these issues, and if watching it helps even one person… then it was all worth it. ♥️”

Welcome to the club, Garrett!
