Taekwondo Trailer – Martial arts, bromance and homoeroticism in the gay-themed film

February 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Marco Berger has made a few good gay-themed movies, including Hawaii, Absent and Plan B. He also gave us a bit of voyeurism with the short film collection, Sexual Tension: Volatile. Martin Farina also got a bit voyeuristic with his documentary, Fulboy. Now the two men have teamed up for Taekwondo, and with the duo together it’s fair to say the movie will be full of barely contained sexuality.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Fernando is on holiday with his closest friends in a beautiful country house in a chic suburb of Buenos Aires. Without the presence of their girlfriends the boys are eager to talk about their deepest feelings, their sexual desire for the girls, their fear of the future and their conflicts. Disconnected from the outside world, they do little more than bask in the hot sun, play in the swimming pool, smoke pot and drink. As in all men only situations, they feel free to walk around naked or half- naked, being in such intimate proximity to each other.

‘In that context, Fernando decides to invite a newcomer, Germán, a close friend from his Taekwondo class. Germán is quickly by the group, but also has a preference that Fernando ignores- he is attracted to men. Little by little the two friends get closer and more intimate, verging quickly on romance. Bringing a kind of potent sexuality in this totally bro environment, they need to decide whether to be explicit about it or not. Brimming with overwhelming sexuality throughout its entire running time, TAEKWONDO is steaming with eroticism and lust.’

The movie is due out in the UK on March 27th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

A Little Lust Trailer – Pop music and teen trouble in the gay-themed coming of age tale

February 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A Little Lust is, for many people, a promising title. And indeed the movie has been pretty well-received at film festivals – although not purely because of the lust. The movie is due out on DVD and VoD in the UK on March 13th, so ahead of that, it’s worth taking a look at the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ’16 year old Rocco’s two aims in life are to get laid and to see his favorite pop star in concert with his best friends, sassy and tomboyish Maria and nerdy and quiet Mauri. When a bullying incident at school forces Rocco to come out to his divorced middle-class parents their liberal leanings are severely tested. Luckily his two friends stand by him and join him in running away from home (in his parents stolen car) to see their favorite singer in concert, followed hot on their heels by his neurotic mother and eccentric gran to hilarious effect.

‘A vibrant , funny coming out tale, ‘A Little Lust’ is both immersive and totally life-affirming.’ Watch the trailer below. [Read more…]

It’s Only the End of the World Trailer – Take a look at the latest from queer director Xavier Dolan

February 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the likes of Laurence Anyways, I Killed My Mother and Tom At The Farm, young queer director Xavier Dolan has become a favourite of film festivals and cineastes, although his movies have yet to break too far beyond that world. However, he appears to be making a few nods towards his film’s commercial prospects with It’s Only the End of the World, which for the first time in one of his movies has internationally recognised stars with Marion Cotillard, Gaspad Ulliel, Lea Seydoux and Vincent Cassel.

It has diluted his style though, with the movie winning two awards as Cannes. The film arrives in UK cinemas & Curzon Home Cinema on 24 February, so it’s a good time to take a look at the trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Prodigious auteur Xavier Dolan (Mommy) comes of age with his dazzling sixth film It’s Only the End of the World, based on the play of the same name by Jean-Luc Lagarce and featuring an all-star cast of top French actors.

‘After 12 years of estrangement, a writer (Gaspard Ulliel) returns to his hometown, planning on announcing his impending death to his family. However, his mother (Nathalie Baye), tempestuous siblings (Vincent Cassel and Léa Seydoux) and beleaguered sister-in-law (Marion Cotillard) have their own personal grievances to air. As buried resentments threaten to surface and fits and feuds begin to unfold, all attempts at empathy are sabotaged by the family’s inability to listen and love.

‘Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, It’s Only the End of the World is a bold and stylistically daring melodrama performed with thunderous emotion. Taut, tense and packed with explosive performances shot in claustrophobic close-up, it further confirms Dolan as one of the most singular talents in world cinema.’

Incidentally his next film, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, will have an even better known cast, with Natalie Portman, Jessica Chastain, Sarah Gadon, Kit Harington, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, Michael Gambon, Thandie Newton and Bella Thorne all starring. [Read more…]

Josh Thomas Says His Great, Gay-Themed Show Please Like Me Has Ended With Season 4

February 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Please Like Me has become one of those shows that’s beloved of everyone who’s seen it – but unfortunately that’s far fewer people than it ought to be. While it airs on normal TV in its native Australia, in the US it was hidden on Pivot, and when that went offline, it switched across to Hulu for its fourth season. In the UK it’s only been available through Amazon Prime Video, and even then it took it three years to get there and comparatively few have heard of it.

However, those who know and love it will be sad to hear that its creator and star, Josh Thomas, has revealed that the recent Season 4 will be the series last. He posted on Twitter, “We have decided Season 4 #PleaseLikeMe is the last. I’ve loved making this show for you all so much. Thank you.” You can take a look at the full statement he released below.

It’s a surprise to many, as just a few weeks ago Hulu was promoting the show at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. However, even at that point there was uncertainty about whether there would be any more. For example, co-star Emily Barclay commented, “I would be surprised if this was the end of Please Like Me, whether it was a different form or incarnation. I don’t know what that means or what that would look like. Maybe that’s wishful thinking. But it doesn’t feel to me like that’s the end of the show.”

Sadly though it look like it will be.

Please Like Me follows young Josh, who at the start of show left his girlfriend and came out as gay, with the series charting his loves and relationship, as well as his sometimes difficult relationship with his parents (one of whom has bipolar disorder), and the lives of his friends. It’s been praised by many, including us, for its sweet nerdiness and its ability to be genuinely funny while also feeling true to how young people are.

Many will be sad to see it go, but Thomas is right in that ending it now it ensures it won’t outstay its welcome. [Read more…]

GLAAD Calls For LGBT Progress In Hollywood After Only Two Widely Released Films Are Nominated In Their Latest Awards

February 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With the success of Moonlight, you could be forgiven for thinking it’s been an okay year for LGBT movies. However, it’s the first time in several years that only one movie with significant LGBT content has been nominated at the Oscars. That’s underlined by the fact that when GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) released the nominees for their annual awards earlier this week, only two movie were nominated for ‘Outstanding Film – Wide Release’ -(Moonlight and Star Trek Beyond).

And considering Star Trek Beyond’s gay content was pretty much blink and you’ll miss it, it shows just how few LGBT characters and issues were in Hollywood-backed and/or widely distributed films last year. That compares to last year, when Carol (which won), The Danish Girl, Dope, Freeheld and Grandma all competed for the award.

GLAAD did find plenty of good films for its ‘Outstanding Film – Limited Release’ shortlist (The Handmaiden, Naz & Maalik, Other People, Spa Night, Those People), but none of those movies had studio backing and had very limited exposure in cinemas. (GLAAD uses their own formula for Wide and Limited release, taking into account ‘number of screens played, budget, and visibility’).

“At a time when progress is at a critical juncture, it is imperative that Hollywood tell more LGBTQ stories that reflect the community’s rich diversity — and build understanding that brings all communities closer together,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. She adds, “This year’s nominees have created images and storylines that challenge misconceptions and broaden understanding, accelerating acceptance and equality for LGBTQ people across the globe.”

Last year GLAAD essentially sent Hollywood a ‘must do better’ notice with their latest Studio Responsibility index, which covered 2015 releases, and on this evidence, they’ll be doing the same for their next one.

Take a look at the full list of GLAAD Media Awards nominees below. [Read more…]

Armie Hammer Massages Timothee Chalamet In First Clip From Gay-Themed Call Me By Your Name

January 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Call Me By Your Name gained a lot of buzz and glowing review at Sundance, with some suggesting that Luca Guadagnino’s gay-themed movie could be a bit of a breakout hit. Now we can get our first taste, as a clipe has been released.

In it young Elio (Timothee Chalamet) is playing a game, and ends up getting a massage from the slightly older Oliver (Armie Hammer). Initially Elio seems uncertain, but considering what happens between them in the actual movie, he can’t mind that much!

The movie  is based on Andre Aciman’s novel of the same name and stars Armie Hammer as a 24-year old American scholar spending the summer of 1983 in Northern Italy, where he attracts the attention of a 17-year-old Jewish-American boy, played by Timothee Chalamet. Michael Stuhlbarg rounds out the cast as the boy’s father.

It sounds a bit Brokeback meet Death In Venice, but the reviews have suggested it’s very much its own beast – and that a very, sexy scene featuring a peach might cause a bit of a stir. Take a look at the clip below. [Read more…]

New Fair Haven Trailer – A young, gay man deals with rural life after conversion therapy

January 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Although gay-conversion therapy has been pretty much completely debunked by science, it still has its advocates and young people are still being forced to go through it, no matter what damage it does. Fair Haven focuses on a young man who’s been through that ordeal, trying to deal with his life afterwards and the competing desires of wanting to please his family and his own real feelings.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After a long stay in ex-gay conversion therapy, James, a young piano prodigy, returns home to his family farm and his emotionally distant father, Richard. After Richard pressures James to give up his music career and take over the farm, James agrees as a way to make up for his past. Soon, however, James finds himself face-to-face with a former lover, Charlie, who wants to help him turn away from his new beliefs and family expectations, and follow his dreams of studying music.’

Take a look at the trailer below. Breaking Glass will be releasing the movie on DVD/VoD in the US on March 7th. [Read more…]

Mahershala Ali Gives Impassioned Speech Against Persecution After His SAG Award Win For Moonlight

January 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mahershala Ali’s chances of winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar just increased significantly, as the acting winners of the SAG Awards often mimic the eventual winners of the Academy Awards. That’s not surprising as the Academy’s membership has far more actors than any other film discipline and there’s a large crossover of voting members.

However, it wasn’t just Ali’s win for role in the gay-themed movie Moonlight that had people talking (he also won as part of the ensemble for the movie Hidden Figures), but also his impassioned speech as a Muslim man winning an award shortly after Trump’s executive order preventing travel for people from several Muslim-majority countries. “I think what I’ve learned from working on Moonlight is we see what happens when you persecute people,” he said.

Ali continued, “They fold into themselves—what I was so grateful about in having the opportunity to play Juan was playing a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself, as the result of the persecution of his community, and taking the opportunity to uplift him, tell him that he mattered, that he was okay, accept him. And I hope that we do a better job of that.

“When we get caught up in the minutiae, the details that make us all different, there’s two ways of seeing that. You can see the texture of that person, the qualities that make them unique, or you can go to war about it, say, ’That person is different from me, I don’t like you, so let’s battle.’”

He then added his own personal story, saying, “My mother is an ordained minister. I’m a Muslim. She didn’t do backflips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 yrs ago. But I tell you now, you put things to the side and I’m able to see her and she’s able to see me. We love each other. The love has grown. And that stuff is minutia. It’s not that important.”

Ali plays drug dealer Juan in Moonlight, who take a persecuted young, gay man under his wing.

While Mahershala didn’t mention Trump by name, Lily Tomlin, who received a lifetime achievement award was slightly more forthright, saying, “Any activist should really talk about how to mount some kind of legislation against whatever it is that they are opposed to. You’ve got to change the laws, just like he’s changing… I don’t wanna make this comparison—but the Nazis, they changed the laws if they didn’t agree with them. They just changed them and they could do whatever they wanted.”

You can take a look at Mahershala Ali’s speech below. [Read more…]

Deep Water Trailer – Aussie cops hunt a serial killer in the gay-themed series

January 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Australia has made a lot of good gay-themed movies and shows, and it looks like they’ve got another one on their hands with the four-part series Deep Water, which uses the story of a killer using gay dating apps to also explore gay-bashings in the 80s and 90s that the police pretty much ignored.

Synopsis: ‘A thrilling Australian crime drama following two detectives as they track down a serial killer who hunts his victims through a dating app. ‘Based on real-life gay bashings in Bondi Beach during the 1980s and early 1990s, this is a haunting and dramatic tale of institutional indifference to gay hate crime.

‘Stars Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black) and Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders) as the lead detectives.’

The series will be released on DVD in the UK via Peccadillo Pictures on January 30th. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet & More Discuss Their Gay-Themed Movie Call Me By Your Name & Its Peach Scene

January 29, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

The signs were looking good for the gay-themed movie Call Me By Your Name even before it premiered as Sundance, as Sony Classics bought worldwide distribution rights before the fest even started. The reviews coming out of Sundance suggest Sony had good reason to snap it up, as most have said it’s a great film, with the potential for crossover mainstream success.

Hammer, Chalamet, Stuhlbarg and director Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love, A Bigger Splash) caught up with THR at Sundance, and you can take a look at what they had to say about the movie below. Guadagnino also took the time to talk separately about a scene that#s already becoming quite buzzed about, involving an encounter between Hammer and Chalamet’s characters which involves a peach and the two getting down and dirty. It’s a beloved scene in the book and many wondered whether its frank depiction of someone making love to the fruit would make it to the screen. It does, and the director talks about what he was trying to get across.

No release date has been set yet, but expect to see it later this year.

Take a look at the video below to find out more. [Read more…]
