Freeheld Trailer – Julianne Moore & Ellen Page fight for gay rights

July 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

freeheld-slideThere are going to be a few gay-themed movies lining up in the hoping of scoring award nominations (and perhaps wins), including Roland Emmeric’s Stonewall, as well as Freeheld. The trailer for the latter has now arrived, and you can watch it below.

In the true life tale, Page plays mechanic Stacie Andree, who was denied the pension benefits of her longtime partner and New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore), when the latter became terminally ill. While Hester’s detective partner, Dane Wells (Michael Shannon), was conservative and initially surprised to learn of Hester’s sexual orientation, he stepped up to become the leader in the fight for Laurel’s rights to assign her benefits to Stacie. Steve Carell meanwhile plays the lawyer who helped take the case to court.

Director Pete Sollett told Buzzfeed, “The political story and the personal story are one for me. It’s always our own sort of issues that pop up when we’re falling in love. But unfortunately on top of those, these women had to deal with the prejudice and the obstacles set up for them by their local government. But for me, they’re one in the same: The personal is the political.”

The movie is out in the US in October. [Read more…]

Paternity Leave Trailer – How would a gay male couple deal with one of them getting pregnant?

July 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

paternity-leave-slide2We enjoyed Paternity Leave when we reviewed it a couple of weeks ago, but at that time there wasn’t a trailer we could show you for Matt Riddlehoover’s latest movie.

That’s changed though as the first proper promo has arrived, which you can watch below.

The film, ‘is a romantic comedy about Greg (Jacob York), Ken (Charlie David), and a moment of passion on the eve of their four year anniversary that changes the course of their lives forever.

‘Greg begins feeling nauseated, fatigued, moody and – most unfortunately – fat. At his wit’s end and Ken’s insistence, he sees a doctor who’s stumped and refers the couple to a specialist. To everyone’s amazement, Greg is pregnant. Shock, stress, and fear settle in, and Greg’s relationship gets put to the ultimate test.

‘Co-starring Chris Salvatore (Eating Out: All You Can Eat, Drama Camp, The Open Weekend), Paternity Leave poses a modern answer to the age old question: “Are we ready to be parents?”‘

Paternity Leave is now playing festivals, and is available for pre-order at PaternityLeaveFilm.com. [Read more…]

Gay Marriage Comedy Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched Seeks Funding

July 16, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dodie-and-cheryl-get-hitchedThe lesbian wedding movie Jenny’s Wedding, starring Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel, will be in US cinemas on July 31st, but it’s not the only movie out there about two women getting married . There’s also Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched, which has launvhed a Kickstarter to raise an ambitious $200,000 to get the film made.

In the film, ‘Dodie Pickerling, a bowling alley manager, and Cheryl Shook, a second grade teacher, are two small town Midwest middle-aged lesbians who’ve been together forever and lead a quiet modest life, accepted by the community because they keep their relationship to themselves. Dodie is fine with this arrangement, but after they attend a neighbor’s shotgun wedding, Cheryl finds herself longing for more. She wants to count too. When she’s denied hospital access to Dodie after a bad allergic run-in with a nut, Cheryl decides to dig out an old rainbow flag and boldly swaps it out with their Cincinnati Reds porch banner.

‘As soon as the town realizes what it represents, the shit hits the fan. “DIKES” is spray painted across the girls’ garage (yeah – the offenders don’t spell so good…) Carried away with emotion, Dodie proposes to her lady friend in front of the small crowd gathered on their lawn. Cheryl is euphoric, but as the wedding plans get underway, Dodie’s enthusiasm wanes. Resentment quickly builds between the two, coupled with the community’s overtly anti gay sentiments. An ugly surge of hypocrisy questions if these supposed god-fearing folks are as righteous as they’d like to believe. Told in the vein of both John Waters and John Hughes, “Dodie & Cheryl Get Hitched” questions if the girls’ union will survive, and why they’d even want to be part of such a fucked up institution in the first place??’

Director Coley Sohn (Sassy Pants) says the film, “is my ode to all the ugly heads that are rearing [against gay people and mariage equality] and also the ones that are buried in the sand. This ain’t no schmaltzy feel good Katherine Heigl rom com. Not that there’s anything wrong with those…  It’s a funny, sometimes dark and disturbing look at an institution that gay or straight, is pretty fucked up to begin with.”

If the movie sounds like something you’d like to see, watch the crowdfunding video below (which features Drew Droege) and then head over to Kickstarter to help out. [Read more…]

Experimental Gay Film He Loves Me Seeks Funding

July 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

he-loves-me-sanuye_shotekaCrowdfunding is becoming an increasingly popular way of raising cash for gay-themed film projects, and Konstantinos Menelaou is hoping to use it to help him jump into the realm of feature-length movies

According to the makers, He Loves Me balances ‘between fiction and documentary, the film will explore the unconventional nature of love and its ability to survive against the fear of loneliness and the problematic lifestyle of a big city. The collapsing relationship between Hermes and Shanuye finds an outlet for escape in an isolated beach. Once there, they expose their feelings and release their emotions. Their love reborn might not be enough to amend all the shattered pieces of their relationship.

Through this film Menelaou wants to create a new outlet of communication, which will allow the actors and the director to explore the key issues posed by the script and to offer the audience the chance to participate and further the dialogue when the film reaches its destinations.’

The film is expected to be ready by early December 2015 and will be submitted to a series of film festivals, amongst which is Berlinale, Toronto, Sundance, OutFest, Flare, South by Southwest and Venice.

Alongside the Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign, a promo trailer for He Loves Me has been released, which you can take a look at below. If you like that, head over to Indiegogo to find out more. [Read more…]

Fox 2000 Is Planning A Film About The Supreme Court Gay Marriage Victory

July 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jim-ObergefellAnyone who’s seen the documentary The Case Against 8 will know that the story of the defeat of California’s Proposition 8 played out like a Hollywood movie. However Tinsel Town has held off but now it seems they’re interested in the more recent US Supreme Court decision that extended marriage equality right across the States.

The New York Times reports that Fox 2000 is developing a movie about the lead plaintiff in the case, Jim Obergefell, and has also purchased the rights to the life of his lawyer, Al Gerhardstein.

As NYT notes, ‘Mr. Obergefell, an Ohio real estate agent, married his longtime partner, John Arthur, in 2013 in Maryland. When Mr. Arthur died, Ohio refused to list Mr. Obergefell as his spouse on the death certificate, so Mr. Obergefell sued.’

The fight went through the legal system until it finally ended up before the Supreme Court, who in June ruled in favour of Obergefell. The justices’ decision that marriage equailty was guaranteed under the US Constitution ensured that same sex marriage had to be rolled out across the nation. However, while most have concentrated on the result, it shouldn’t be forgotten that it was a story of love that underpinned the historic decision.

Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, who produced the Twilight movies, are behind the movie, which will be largely based around a book proposal by Obergefell and journalist Debbie Cenziper, called 21 Years to Midnight.

Don’t expect to see it all that soon, as it’s very early days and it’s not expected to be in cinemas for at least two years.

Holding The Man Trailer – Two young gay men face the obstacles to enduring love

July 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

holding-the-man-slideTimothy Conigrave’s memoir Holding The Man is beloved by many, especially amongst people in its native Australia, where the book has already become a stage play and is now a film.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tim and John fell in love at their all boys high-school while both were teenagers. John was captain of the football team. Tim an aspiring actor playing the lead in Romeo and Juliet. Their romance endured for 15 years to laugh in the face of everything life threw at it – the separations, the discriminations, the temptations, the jealousies and the losses – until the only problem that love can’t solve, tried to destroy them.

‘Ryan Corr and Craig Stott will star in this remarkable true-life story as Timothy Conigrave and John Caleo, whose enduring love affair has been immortalised in both Tim’s cult-classic and hilarious memoir and Tommy Murphy’s award-winning stage play of the same name. Murphy has adapted Tim’s book for the screen.’

As you may have guessed the greatest obstacle they face from the 1970s into the 1990s is the spectre of AIDS.

The great cast of Holding The Man also includes Kerry Fox, Sarah Snook, Anthony LaPaglia and Guy Pearce.

It’s due out in Australia on August 27th, and will hopefully make to other parts of the world soon. [Read more…]

Actor Matt Dallas Has Married His Boyfriend, Blue Valentine

July 6, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matt-dallas-blue-hamiltonEver since Kyle XY, there have been plenty of people all around the world swooning over the handsomeness that is Matt Dallas. However we’re got bad news for all those folks, as he’s off the market.

Matt has revealed on Instagram that he has married his fiance, LA musician Blue Hamilton.

The two have been engaged since Christmas 2012 (it was while mentioning his new fiance on Instagram in January 2013 that Matt casually came out publicly), but it seems they’ve now officially tied the knot, with Matt posting a pic of him and Blue outside the courthouse apparently holding their marriage license, along with the message, ‘Introducing Mr. & Mr. Dallas‘. Blue meanwhile posted the same pic except his message was, ‘Introducing Mr. & Mr. Hamilton‘.

Hopefully that’s not a sign that they already arguing over what surnames they should use (only joking).

They certainly make a cute couple and we wish them huge amounts of luck!
