Top Cat Begins Trailer – The cool feline returns with his own CGI animated origin story

March 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

top-cat-begins-slideI think it’s safe to safe having watched the trailer for Top Cat Begins, that the digital artists at the likes of Pixar, Dreamworks Animation, Illumination and Blu Sky aren’t going to be worried that the makers of this new movie are going to blow them out of the water with the quality of their CGI. In fact all the background characters look oddly like zombies.

However, that doesn’t mean the kids won’t like this new take on the classic 1960s cartoon, and it’s a step up from the odd part CG, part hand-drawn world of 2011’s Top Cat: The Movie. It might also be a surprise that both these recent Top Cat movies are actually Mexican production.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tracing the roots of the famous animated series from cartoon legends Hanna-Barbera, get set for this ‘purrfect’ feature adventure that tells the ‘tail’ of how our hero, T.C. created his infamous, Manhattan alley cats gang. Poor, lonely and living on the streets, Top Cat is one sad cat, until a chance meeting with Benny, a naive and good-hearted cat looking for adventure. The pair quickly become best buddies – and partners in crime – pick pocketing their way out of poverty and quickly believing they are the real cats’ whiskers! Setting their sights higher, they decide to steal from Mr. Big, a mysterious diamond-stealing henchman who rules New York’s backstreets. As Top Cat and Benny hatch a plan to take the diamonds for themselves, little do they know, success is just the start of their problems. Along the way, our heroes meet fellow alley cats Choo Choo, Fancy-Fancy and Brain, and together they’re a formidable bunch. However, when Mr. Big catches up with them and captures Top Cat, can his new friends save the day?

‘Staring Jason Harris (Top Cat: The Movie, Rio 2), David Hoffman (Bridesmaids) and Chris Edgerly (Happy Feet, The Simpsons) and director Andres Couturier, TOP CAT comes to UK cinemas May 27.’

21 Jump Street/Men in Black Crossover Gets Director James Bobin

March 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-bobin

When Channing Tatum came up with the idea for a crossover between 21 Jump Street and Men In Black, it seemed like the sort of crazy thing where a studio would do some work on it, just to keep the star happy. However, it appears Sony is taking it very seriously, as Variety reports that Muppets and Flight On The Conchords director James Bobin is in talks to helm the movie.

While Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both expected to be involved, don’t expect to see Tommy Lee Jones or Will Smith, as the makers are apparently looking for ‘younger, fresher faces’ to put on the black suits and help keep the fact aliens are living amongst us a secret. There’s no other info than that, and we’ll have to wait and see how Schmidt and Jenko get caught up in alien shenanigans, and whether the movie will see them going undercover to deal with some sort of sci-fi nasty.

Expect to hear more info soo though, as Sony is hoping to shoot the movie this summer. It appears that once they’ve tied down Bobin, they’ll be looking for actors to play the new Men (and possibly Women) in Black. Who knows, perhaps after the lacklustre Men In Black 3, this could be a good way to revive the franchise.

Take A Look At The New Power Rangers Line-Up With The First Official Pic

March 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Power-Rangers-movie-pic1

Yep, the Power Rangers are coming (back) to the big screen, this time with a bigger budget and presumably fewer people in robot and monster costumes, or CGI that looks like it was made on a Commodore 64. The movie version has just started shooting, and to give us a look at the new lineup of heroes, the first official pic has been released.

They’re not in costume, but the pic via EW shows us, R.J. Cyler as Billy (the Blue Ranger), Naomi Scott as Kimberly (the Pink Ranger), Ludi Lin as Zack (the Black Ranger), Becky G as Trini (the Yellow Ranger), and Dacre Montgomery as Jason (the Red Ranger).

It appears having a multi-ethnic team was important to them, with Dean Israelite telling EW, “From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process. We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”

He’s also excited about having Elizabeth Banks involved, saying, “It’s very exciting that we got [Banks], and I think what she loves is the opportunity to really embrace the insanity and deliciousness of Rita Repulsa in terms of how weird and wonderful that character was, and really dive into and consume that character. You should always be off-balance when you’re watching her. Is she insane? Is she totally calculated? Does she know what she’s doing? Elizabeth can toe that line really well.”

The film is due out March 2017.

Will Smith & David Ayer Reuniting For Max Landis’ Fantasy Bright

March 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

will-smith

Will Smith and director David Ayer must have decided they liked working together on Suicide Squad, as Variety reports they’re thinking about getting together again for Bright, based on a script by Max Landis. It doesn’t look like any deals with Smith have been signed yet, but he is interested.

However, it appears Ayer is more committed, as Landis recently tweeted about Ayer rewriting his spec cript for Bright, saying, ‘David Ayer translating a whole script of mine into Ayer-sian is a huge, bizarre honor. Like reading the same script from an alternate dimension.’

There’s not a vast amount of detail known about the script, but it’s suggested that it will be somewhat similar in tone to David Ayer’s End Of Watch, but set in a world where the likes of Orcs and fairies live alongside human. As both End Of Watch and Landis’ Chronicle went down the found footage route, there’s a decent chance this will do the same.

While Smith and Ayer are expected to make a sequel to Suicide Squad, that’s not due to start shooting until 2017, with the hope they can fit in Bright this year.

Ghostbusters Trailer – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig & co. are out to beat the spooks

March 4, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ghostbusters-2016-slideEver since it was announced that Sony was reviving the Ghostbusters franchise with a new, all-female team, there have been some grumblers out there saying it shouldn’t have been done. However, now the first proper trailer is here, which gives us our first proper look at the movie. While slightly different in tone to the original, it does look like it’ll be a lot of fun.

This time around the people fighting the ghosts are Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Previous reports have suggested that the film would be set in a parallel universe where the events of the earlier movies never happened, but the trailer suggests that’s not true, although it doesn’t full explain why the actors from the original movies, such as Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts, will be in the film but apparently playing different characters (it’s also notable that they were left out of the trailer).

Other new faces include Charles Dance, Michael Kenneth Williams and Chris Hemsworth (who’ll be the women’s hunky secretary. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) directs, with a July release set. Take a look at the trailer below.

New Finding Dory Trailer – Ellen Degeneres’ forgetful fish gets her own adventure

March 2, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Finding-Dory-slideWe’ve had a couple fo brief looks at Pixar’s return to the sea for Finding Dory, but it’s only now that we’ve got a proper trailer, which gives us a good look at the movie, with Ellen Degeneres’ forgetful fish finding out about her past.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory” reunites everyone’s favourite forgetful blue tang, Dory, with her friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?’

It certainly looks like it might recapture the magic that made Finding Nemo the highest grossing animated film ever at the time of its release. The movie will be in cinemas this summer.

The Man Who Knew Infinity Trailer – Dev Patel plays legendary Indian mathematician Ramanujan

March 1, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-man-who-knew-infinity-slideIn mathematical circles there are few people as respected as Srinavasa Ramanujan, a man who managed to make major strides in the field, despite the fact the he was almost completely self-taught and developed his skills in isolation. It’s almost surprising a major biopic about him has never been made before, but now one is on its way.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Colonial India, 1913. Srinavasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) is a 25-year-old shipping clerk and self-taught genius, who failed out of college due to his near-obsessive, solitary study of mathematics. Determined to pursue his passion despite rejection and derision from his peers, Ramanujan writes a letter to G. H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons), an eminent British mathematics professor at Trinity College, Cambridge. Hardy recognises the originality and brilliance of Ramanujan’s raw talent and despite the scepticism of his colleagues, undertakes bringing him to Cambridge so that his theories can be explored.’

The film will arrive in cinemas in April. Take a look at the trailer below.

Spotlight Picks Up Best Film At The Oscars, With A Mixed Night For LGBT People & Films

February 29, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

spotlight-slideIn the last couple of weeks you could have been forgiven for thinking that it was just a formality that The Revenant would get the Best Picture Oscar, but in the end things worked out differently as the excellent Spotlight picked up the biggest gong. However, The Revenant didn’t leave empty-handed, with Alejandro González Iñárritu picking up his second Best Director Oscar in a row (only the third person to do so), Emmanuel Lubezki getting Best Cinematography, and Leonardo DiCaprio finally getting a Best Actor gong.

The other acting honours weren’t too much of a surprise, with Brie Larson getting Best Actress for Room, Mark Rylance picking up Best Supporting Actor for Bridge of Spies and Alicia Vikander winning Best Supporting Actress for The Danish Girl.

However, perhaps surprisingly – but pleasingly for many people – Mad Max: Fury Road actually won the most awards, with six. It had a virtual sweep of the technical categories, getting everything from Costume Design to Best Editing.

On the LGBT front things weren’t so great. Alicia Vikander won for the transgender themed The Danish Girl, but not for playing a trans characer, but the likes of Carol lost out completely. Sam Smith also picked up Best Original Song for Writing’s On The Wall from Spectre. The singer caused a few raised eyebrows when he said during the acceptance speech that he thought he was first openly gay person to win an Oscar. He did acknowledge that he might not be, but one person he appears to know personally was quick to point out that he is also gay and has an Oscar – Dustin Lance Black. The Milk screenwriter linked to a video of his acceptance speech, along with the message, ‘Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé.’

There are also other quite a few other openly gay people, such as Elton John, who have won Oscars.

The confusion came due to Smith misunderstanding something Ian McKellen said a few weeks ago. During his acceptance speech, Smith said, “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said no openly gay man had won an Oscar. If this is the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope that we can all stand as equals one day.”

What McKellen was actually referring to was the fact no openly gay actor has ever won an Oscar – which is true – but Smith thought he was referring to all categories. It’s a shame the singer’s slight faux pas has overshadowed what he said, as there is certainly an issue with LGBT representation both at the Oscars and on screen, as while there are plenty of gay people behind-the-scenes, the opportunities for those who want to be on screen and be openly gay are currently more limited, especially at the top level. Although as the likes of Tom Hanks have shown, if you’re straight and play gay, it’s not bar to success and winning an Oscar.

Take a look at the full list of winners below. [Read more…]
