Gravity will compete in the Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Director for Alfonso Cuarón, Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Special Visual Effects and Leading Actress.

The nominees for the EE Rising Star Award, which is always an interesting category to watch, were announced earlier this week. They include are Dane DeHaan, George MacKay, Lupita Nyong’o, Will Poulter and Léa Seydoux. This audience award is voted for by the British public and presented to an actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and promise.

On the LGBT front, Behind The Candelabra did well with five nominations in the Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair categories. Matt Damon is nominated for Supporting Actor. As it premiered on TV in the US, it’s not eligible for the Oscars, but its British cinema release allows it to compete at the BAFTA film awards.

The lesbian-themed Blue is the Warmest Colour, which won the Palm d’Or, is nominated for Film Not in the English Language. Philomena, which includes a gay subtheme, will compete for Best Film line-up, with three further nominations in Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay and Leading Actress for Judi Dench.

First Image Of Adam Sandler In The Cobbler Arrives

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cobbler-preview-pic1The Cobbler came together really quickly, largely because the time between Adam Sandler deciding to make it and when he’d be need on the set of Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children was very short. So only a few weeks after it was officially announced in September, a (surprisingly good) cast was rounded up and the movie went into production.

Now the first image from the movie has arrived, which you can see above.

Sandler plays the title character, a shoe repairman blessed with the ability to enter the lives of his customers. The likes of Dan Stevens, Dustin Hoffman, Method Man, Steve Buscemi plays a character named Manny.

Thomas McCarthy is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Paul Sado. Of the film McCarthy tells EW, “I lived above a shoe-repair shop in New York City that I used to walk by every day, and I always just kind of was fascinated with it, looking in and seeing an endless maze of shoes sitting around. I was kind of thinking about the expression of, ‘You don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes’ one day and what the origin of that was and what that would mean to translate that into a story.”

Spidey Faces Electro In Three New Amazing Spider-man 2 Posters

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

amazing-spider-man-2-poster6
If there’s something we can take away from these brand new posters, it’s that Electro in The Amazing Spider-man 2 seems to be stuck in one position, as he’s exactly the same no matter where he and Spider are. Presumably in the film he’ll be more active and won’t simply float around with one leg slightly bent all the time.

Other than that they’re pretty cool and suitably comic-infused images, which its nice to see are selling the colour of the movie, rather than following the gloomy Dark Knight inspired imagery other superhero movies have gone for.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

January 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tammy-pic1
Melissa McCarthy is stretching her wings with Tammy, which she doesn’t just star in but also co-wrote and produces. She was also due to co-direct, but in the end those duties went solely to her hubby, Ben Falcone.

Now the first image has arrived, featuring McCarthy alongside Susan Sarandon.

The movie is about Tammy (McCarthy), who loses her job at a fast food restaurant and discovers her husband is cheating on her at the same time. She decides to take a road trip with her profane, whiskey-swilling grandmother (Sarandon). Dan Aykroyd and Mark Duplass also star.

The film will be out this summer.

Channing Tatum Leaps Into Action In A New Jupiter Ascending Image

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jupiter-ascending-pic2
Last month the first trailer for the Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending arrived, which showed us Channing Tatum looking surprisingly pixie-like. Now we get another look at him as he leaps into action in the movie, all guns blazing.

It’s certainly one of the most intriguing movies of the year.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.

‘Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

‘From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.’

It’s due out in July.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Extended Clip – Chris Pine heads into the fight

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is one of the first big films of the year (although some have suggested that delays from summer to Christmas and then to January denote problems with the movie), which will be in cinemas later this month.

To help drum up interest an extended clip has been released, giving us a look at Chris Pine in action and heading into a fight. Take a look below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the CIA analyst created by espionage master Tom Clancy, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is a blistering action thriller that follows Ryan (Chris Pine, “Star Trek”) from his quiet double-life as a veteran-turned-Wall Street executive to his all-out initiation as a hunted American agent on the trail of a massive terrorist plot in Moscow.

‘Ryan appears to be just another New York executive to his friends and loved ones, but his enlistment into the CIA secretly goes back years. He was brought in as a brainy Ph.D. who crunches global data – but when Ryan ferrets out a meticulously planned scheme to collapse the U.S. economy and spark global chaos, he becomes the only man with the skills to stop it. Now, he’s gone fully operational, thrust into a world of mounting suspicion, deception and deadly force. Caught between his tight-lipped handler Harper (Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner), his in-the-dark fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley) and a brilliant Russian oligarch (Kenneth Branagh), Jack must confront a new reality where no one can seem to be trusted, yet the fate of millions rests on his finding the truth. With the urgency of a lit fuse, he’s in a race to stay one step ahead of everyone around him.’ [Read more…]

Kite Trailer & Extended Clip – Samuel L. Jackson mentors a teen killer

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

2014 is going to be the year of Sam Jackson helping out keen killers, before he gets back to superheroes next year with Captain America 2 and Avengers Assemble. We just posted the first pic of him in Barely Lethal, where he’s mentoring Hailee Steinfeld, and now we have a trailer and clip for Kite, where he’s dealing with India Eisley’s assassin.

The film is about a young woman (Eisley) who lives in a failed nation state after the financial collapse, where a corrupt security force profits on the trafficking of young women. When her policeman father is killed, she vows to track the murderer down with the help of his ex-partner. In the original anime the film is based, she is initially ‘helped’ by the two corrupt cops on the case of the double homicide, Akai and Kanie, who take her in as guardians and end up turning her into an assassin.

As you can see from the trailer, it’s a heavily stylised movie, which will be in cinemas later this year. [Read more…]

A Promise Trailer – Alan Rickman & Richard Madden want Rebecca Hall

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

It’s Harry Potter meets Game Of Thrones, with Alan Rickman and Richard Madden starring in A Promise, alongside Rebecca Hall. Now a trailer has arrived, which is in English with French subtitles.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Set in pre-First World War Germany, Patrice Leconte’s venture into English-language filmmaking chronicles the simmering love triangle between an ailing factory owner (Alan Rickman), his young bride (Rebecca Hall) and his protégé (Richard Madden).

‘Stefan Zweig’s novel Journey into the Past, set in pre-First World War Germany, provides the inspiration for Patrice Leconte’s venture into English-language production. Employing his by-now familiar style, Leconte, a master of the unexpected, finds a simmering romance within the pages of Zweig’s book, and uses its slow heat to powerful effect. But A Promise is no bodice-ripper. It is an elegantly directed, keenly modulated love story.

‘Hoffmeister (Alan Rickman) is an ailing factory owner, whiskered and respectable. As his energies flag, he looks to a sharp young man in his employ for help. Ludwig (Richard Madden) impresses Hoffmeister with his reliability and youthful spirit, and the older man finds himself leaning more and more on this promising up-and-comer. At the same time, Hoffmeister’s young bride (Rebecca Hall) is looking for a tutor for their child, and Ludwig proves both flexible and willing. When he moves into their home, an emotional triangle develops. Societal dignity and decorum must be respected, and it is. Nevertheless, heated passions come into play, while Hoffmeister looks on.

‘Unravelling over many years, this tale extends well beyond its set-up, and Leconte moves us through the emotional maze, making us aware of the complexities of feeling amongst all of the players. Beautifully supported by three fine actors, A Promise delivers on its premise. Love can take many forms before it either blooms or fades. Beneath those starched shirts and lacy blouses, feelings of respect and care rub up against those of lust and desire.’

The film should be out later this year. [Read more…]

Steven Spielberg May Take On Aztec Emperor Montezuma

January 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Steven-SpielbergAfter finishing Lincoln, Steven Spielberg announced he was going to make Robopocalypse, but despite the fact he owns his own studio and had the main cast in place, budget issues meant he decided to indefinitely delay the movie. Then he was going to shoot, American Sniper but he stepped away from the a few months ago.

Since then it hasn’t been clear what he would make next. Now we may have a hint as Deadline reports he’s mulling the movie Montezuma, based on a 50-year-old script by blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo (Spartacus). Writer Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s List) will produce, with Javier Bardem apparently interested in starring.

Montezuma has become of a legend in Hollywood as ‘one of the greatest films never made’. It was going to happen in 1965, but it was cancelled before it could go into production. The script is about epic legendary Aztec emperor Montezuma and his bloody conflict with Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. Bardem would play the latter.

Spielberg hasn’t decided whether to make the movie yet, but if he does it’ll probably be his next movie.
