Amazing Spider-man 2 Gets An Official Synopsis As Shooting Begins

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Amazing Spider-manIt’s official, shooting is underway on The Amazing Spider-man 2, and to mark that an official synopsis has been released, along with the news Colm Feore has joined the cast. There’s also the mysterious image below, which teases some sort of new Oscorp technology.

So first up the synopsis: ‘In ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough.

‘Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.’

Paul Giamatti’s involvement has also been confirmed, although there’s no official word on whether he’ll be playing the Rhino as rumoured. And while we know Colm Feore will be in the film, there’s no news on who he’ll play.

The pic below was tweeted by director Marc Webb, but he’s given little clue as to what it might mean.

Apes Director Rupert Wyatt Takes On Birdsong

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rupert-WyattEver since Sebastian Faulk’s novel Birdsong was published 16 years ago there have been endless rumours of a film version, with various actors and directors attached at different times. However with the BBC making a mini-series version in 2012, most assumed we wouldn’t be getting a full-on movie version after all.

It’s turned out in may be the other way around, with the series reigniting interest in making a film. Embankment Films is backing the movie, with Rise Of The Planet of The Apes director Rupert Wyatt now onboard to helm, according to ScreenDaily.

Faulks’ novel is set before and during the First World War, following a young British man who gets involved in a relationship with a married French woman. When war breaks out he ends up as a soldier amidst the carnage of the front lines. Eddie Redmayne and Clémence Poésy played the main roles in the TV version, but there’s no info on whether they might be back for the film (probably not).

The movie is currently looking for backers at the Berlin Film Festival.

Michael Keaton Feels The Need For Speed Opposite Aaron Paul

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-keatonDreamworks is very keen to get its own Fast & Furious style franchise with a movie version of the EA videogame series Need For Speed. Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Kid Cudi, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malik and Harrison Gilbertson are already set to star and now they’ve been joined by Michael Keaton, according to THR.

According to the trade, ‘The story tells of a local street-racer (Paul) who partners with a rich and arrogant business associate (Cooper), only to find himself framed by his colleague and sent to prison. After his stint in the joint, he joins a New York-to-Los Angeles race to get revenge.

‘But when the ex-partner learns of the scheme, he puts a massive bounty on the racer’s head, forcing him to run a cross-country gauntlet of illegal racers in all manner of supercharged vehicles… Keaton will play the reclusive and eccentric host of an underground supercar race where he invites the best drivers from around the world.’

Scott Waugh is set to direct from a script by George Gatins. A release date of February 7th, 2014 is already set.

Paul Walker Up For Hitman Reboot, Agent 47

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul-WalkerVideogame to movie adaptations don’t exactly have a great history, with far more that have failed than succeeded. In 2007 Timothy Olyphant took on the hit game Hitman, but it didn’t turn out that well either financially or critically. However 20th Century Fox thinks there’s more life in the Square Enix game franchise, as they’re planning a new movie version that’s currently going under the title Agent 47.

They’ve also found somebody to star, as Deadline reports that Paul Walker is set to play the lead. He’ll be assassin Agent 47, although there’s no info on exactly what the plot will be this time around.

Skip Woods, who wrote the first movie (as well as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and A Good Day To Die Hard), wrote the script with Mike Finch, while commercials director Aleksander Bach will helm. The plan is to shoot the movie in Berlin and Singapore this summer after Walker fulfills his press commitments on Fast & Furious 6.

In the games Agent 47 is famously bald, but there’s no news yet on whether Walker will be shaving his head (although the fact he has to wait to finish Fast & Furious press suggests he probably will).

Sean Bean Heads For The Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sean-beanAlthough Cloud Atlas didn’t do as well as Lana and Andy Wachowski probably hoped, they’re planning a slightly more mainstream sci-fi adventure for their next outing – Jupiter Ascending. Now a new cast member has signed up, with Deadline reporting that Sean Bean has joined the already cast Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, and Eddie Redmayne.

The story is set in a universe where humans are at the bottom of the evolutionary food chain, and one supreme leader rules all. The plot follows a young Earth woman (Mila Kunis) who is targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe, because she bears a striking similarity to the ruler. Channing Tatum plays the bounty hunter who is sent to kill the woman, but ends up falling for her in the process (so it’s all a bit Snow White). Sean Bean is portraying Stringer, who’s described as a ‘Han Solo-type character’.

Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski are directing from their own original screenplay. The last we heard an early 2013 production start was being eyed, although an exact start date isn’t known.

Felicity Jones Tells A True Story, Alongside Jonah Hill & James Franco

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

felicity-jonesFor the last couple of years, actress Felicity Jones has seemed poised to break into the big time, and perhaps she’s closer to that by signing on to play the female lead in True Story. She joins Jonah Hill and James Franco who signed up to star last year. Brad Pitt will produce.

The movie is based on New York Times journalist Michael Finkel’s memoir, which is all about how a serial killer called Christian Longo stole the reporter’s identity. A day after Longo was caught in Mexico using Finkel’s name, the newspaper fired him. However, the journo was given a shot at redemption when Longo revealed that the only person he would talk to is Finkel.

Jonah Hill will play the journalist while James Franco is Longo. Felicity Jones will play Finkel’s girlfriend, who stands by her man throughout this ordeal.

Rupert Goold is set to directing from a screenplay by David Kajganich. (Source: Deadline)

Chris Pratt Takes Guardians Of The Galaxy Lead

February 6, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chris-prattFor the last few months there’s been a huge amount of speculation over who will play Peter Quill, aka Star Lord, in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy. The likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi and various others have been in the running, but now Deadline reports that the role has gone to Chris Pratt.

Pratt is perhaps best known for the US comedy series Park And Recreation, but he’s also appeared in the TV series like Everwood and The OC. On film he’s popped up in Wanted, Jennifer’s Body, Moneyball and What’s Your Number, although it’s perhaps his recent role in Zero Dark Thirty that convinced Marvel he could take on an action lead. Pratt’s casting also perhaps suggests there’ll be more humour in this film than other recent superhero movie.

Peter Quill is a NASA astronaut who learns that he was born to a human mother and alien father. He ends up journeying into the depths of space, where he became embroiled in an intergalactic conflict. He’s eventually transformed into Star Lord, who leads the Guardians of the Galaxy in their quest for justice across the galaxy.

James Gunn is directing the film from his own screenplay, adapted from the Marvel comic book series. Other characters such as Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Racoon and Gamora have yet to be cast.

Rodrigo Santoro Joins Portman & Fassbender In Jane Got A Gun

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Rodrigo-Santoro-slideRodrigo Santoro will be returning to his most famous role of Xerxes in 300: Rise Of An Empire this August, and now he’s got a new role, teaming up with Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton and Michael Fassbender for Jane Got A Gun, according to Deadline.

Lynne Ramsey is set to direct the film, which is about a woman (Portman) whose outlaw husband returns home barely alive and riddled with bullet wounds. She is forced to reach out to an ex-lover (Fassbender) and ask if he will help defend her farm when her husband’s gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job. Edgerton is set to play the new leader of the gang.

Santoro meanwhile is up to play a character called Fitchum, although it hasn’t been revealed exactly how he fits into the plot.

The film is set to start shooting in April in New Mexico.

Guillermo Del Toro Going To The Secret Garden

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guillermo-del-toroGuillermo Del Toro always likes to keep busy, and he’s just added another project to his roster, as he’s set to produce a new adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic children’s novel, The Secret Garden. Many noted similarities between Pan’s Labyrinth and The Secret Garden, so it’s not completely new territory for Del Toro.

The film has also hired a screenwriter, with Deadline reporting that Lucy Alibar will come up with the script. Alibar only has one screen credit to her name, but as she’s scored an Oscar nomination for co-writing Beasts Of The Southern Wild, it’s little surprise she’s getting hired for good jobs or that she’d be seen as a good fit for Secret Garden.

Burnett’s 1910 novel is about the rude, spoiled Mary Lennox, who’s less than pleased to be sent to live in her uncle’s cold house in Yorkshire, after her family dies of cholera in India. She finds the key to a garden that’s been left unattended since her uncle’s wife died, and entering it begins to change both her life and those around her.

This new version is apparently going to give things a slightly different spin, setting it in the American South around the turn of the 20th century, which suggests a more gothic take than previous versions (which would certainly fit with Del Toro’s penchants).

It’s still early days for the new movie, with no director attached as yet.

Kristen Wiig Confirmed For Anchorman 2

February 5, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kristen-wiigFor years there were rumours and speculation about a sequel to Anchorman, but even since it was officially announced the progress to production has been painfully slow. However now it’s actually moving towards the shoot, and for the last couple of months it’s been known that producers were trying to get Kristen Wiig to star.

Now director Adam McKay has confirmed her involvement on Twitter, saying ‘Just found out Kristen Wiig officially on board for Anchorman 2. Cannonball!’

It’s still not been revealed what character she’ll be playing, although earlier speculation suggested she could be a women who gets involved with Steve Carell’s Brick Tamland. Others have said she could be the new boss in the newsroom, which upsets Ron Burgundy’s misogynistic machismo.

The plan is for shooting to start next month with the movie heading for a Christmas release.
