Guillermo Del Toro Takes Book Of Life To Fox Animation

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guillermo-del-toroGuillermo Del Toro loves animation. At one point he had a deal at Disney, which for various reasons fell apart and didn’t lead to any movies. Then he signed up to help oversee Dreamworks Animation movies such as Megamind and Rise Of The Guardians.

Now THR has revealed he’s moving over to Fox Animation, as he’s set up a deal there to make Book Of Life (formerly known as Day Of The Dead), which already has a US release date set of October 10th, 2014. Del Toro will produce, and he’s handpicked TV toon director Jorge Gutierrez to direct the movie.

The THR report has no news on the plot, but when rumours of the movie were first revealed back in February, it was said to be a Romeo and Juliet style love story set against a Mexican Day of the Dead backdrop. There’s also said to be a musical element.

It’ll be interesting to see what this does to Lee Unkrich’s Dia de los Muertos over at Pixar, which is also based around the Day Of The Dead. That movie has no released date, and Del Toro’s film may thrown a spanner in its works.

Rooney Mara, Emily Blunt & Rebecca Hall Eyed for Transcendence

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rooney-maraA few weeks ago it was revealed that Johnny Depp had signed up to star in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Christopher Nolan’s longtime cinematographer, Wally Pfister. However as the time there was no info on the plot.

Now it’s been revealed that the movie will about the point of singularity, where humans build machines that are smarter than they are, and will see Depp playing a scientist whose brain is uploaded into a supercomputer. Now Deadline reports that Rooney Mara, Emily Blunt, and Rebecca Hall are the top candidates to play the female lead.

The movie is about Will (Depp) and his wife Evelyn – which is the role the trio of actresses are vying for. Along with another scientist, they are trying to create the world’s first sentient machine. When Will is murdered by extremists, Evelyn decides to upload Will’s brain into a supercomputer, which causes more problems than she initially thought.

Shooting on the movie is slated to begin on March 4th, although this could be problematic for Emily Blunt, as he schedule for All You Need Is Kill has still not been worked out yet, so it is possible that both shoots may overlap. Expect news on who’s landed the role soon.

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

penn-badgelyPenn Badgley (Greetings from Tim Buckley), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) and Hill Harper (CSI: NY) have joined the already pretty good ensemble cast for writer/director Brian Horiuchi’s indie flick Parts Per Billion.

They join Frank Langella (Robot and Frank), Gena Rowlands (Yellow), Rosario Dawson (Sin City) and Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down) in the movie, which tells the story of three couples dealing with the same reality shaking event that threatens to tear them apart. The Magnolia-style ensemble movie is set just before a disastrous biological war.

Peter Jackson Plans Tintin 2 For 2015 Release

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hobbit-peter-jackson-pic1Peter Jackson is going to be a very, very busy man in 2013, as he’s already got two more Hobbit films to prepare for release in December 2013 and July 2014, and now he’s revealed that he plans to shoot the motion capture elements for a sequel to Tintin next year too.

Belgian site RYTBF (via Bleeding Cool) says that he hopes that this will mean that he can get the film into cinemas in 2015. 2015 release. Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker) is writing the screenplay, which is believed to be based on Herge’s The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun.

Jackson has long been slated to direct the second Tintin movie, agreeing to do it when he signed up to produce the Spielberg directed Secret Of The Unicorn. Things have been somewhat delayed though by The Hobbit, as originally Guillermo Del Toro was supposed to be making the Middle Earth movies while Jackson worked on Tintin, but when the New Zealander took over as director, the motion-capture movie had to be pushed back.

Mark Wahlberg Producing A Hacker Thriller

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mark-WahlbergMark Wahlberg seems to like movies based on magazine articles at the moment, as he’s got Pain & Gain coming to cinemas next year and now THR reports that he has signed up to produce an untitled hacker-themed project for Universal Pictures, loosely based on a January article in GQ Magazine by David Kushner.

Jonathan Herman is on screenplay duty, writing a script that follows a skilled hacker who goes after the students at a large, suburban high school. He has previously written Conviction and Rites of Men, both of which landed on the Black List. The writer has a bit of a history with Wahlberg, having previously served as a production assistant on Boogie Nights.

Mark Wahlberg will produce alongside his partner Stephen Levinson, who have produced Entourage and the current HBO hit series Boardwalk Empire. At the moment there’s no indication that Wahlberg is set to star too.

Welcome To The Punch Trailer – Take a look at the stylish James McAvoy thriller

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Let’s pray this doesn’t end up being a case of style over substance, as the trailer for Welcome To The Punch looks absolutely gorgeous, but we’ll have to wait and see if the plot can live up to looks.

The film is an action thriller about a London detective (James McAvoy) and an ex-criminal (Mark Strong) who’s forced to return from his Icelandic hideaway. They become unlikely allies in a bid to expose a high-level conspiracy. The cast also includes Andrea Riseborough and Peter Mullan.

The second movie from BAFTA nominated Eran Creevy, Welcome To The Punch is due out March 15th (it’s original September 7th 2012 debut was delayed). And as for if it will be style over substant, the script placed third on the 2010 Brit List (the UK version of the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays), so that’s a good indication this will be worth watching.

New Jack The Giant Slayer Poster Drops – Into the mouth of a stone giant

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

I have to admit I wasn’t that impressed with the recent Jack The Giant Slayer trailer, which came across as a little silly, but I still have hope that director Bryan Singer can pull off this fantastical fairytale. This latest poster certainly makes it look a little more cool, with a man (presumably Nicholas Hoult’s Jack) preparing to enter the watery mouth of a stone giant.

The film is a liberal retelling of the classic Jack & The Beanstalk tale, in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer (Nicholas Hoult) leads an expedition into the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.

Alongside Hoult, the likes of Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy and Ian McShane star. To be honest we’re not entirely convinced by this trailer, as it seems a little silly, but we’ll reserve judgement. It hits UK cinemas March 22nd 2013. (Poster via Yahoo!)

Another Earth Director Mike Cahill Plans i Origins

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Another Earth may not have become a massive success at the box office, but it certainly got director Mike Cahill noticed when it debuted at Sundance in 2011. Now he’s planning his follow-up film, i Origins.

Another Earth focussed on a woman (Brit Marling) dealing with the difficulties of life after it’s reveals another, parallel Earth exists, causing her to wonder if another version of herself lives there and whether they made better decisions with their life.

i Origins continues the science tinge, with Hollywood.com saying it, ‘Connects the lives of the most unlikely people from around the globe. One doctor, on the brink of a scientific discovery which will have historical ramifications, travels to India to search for the one person, a young Indian girl, who can prove or disprove his theory. The story follows the incredible journeys that bring these strangers together, and proves there is no separating matters of science and matters of the heart.’

The movie will shoot in New York City.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Film Sequel Planned

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tinker-tailor-soldier-spy-posterThe spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy may not have been a massive box office success, but it was nominated for three Oscars and took home a couple of BAFTAs. While it only grossed just over $80 million worldwide, it cost very little much to make, and so producer Eric Fellner has revealed, via Collider, that a sequel is in the works.

Director Tomas Alfredson and writer Peter Straughan, who both worked on the first film, are currently working on the script. Fellner says, “We are working on another one. [Producer] Tim Bevan is putting it together as we speak with [screenwriter] Peter Straughan and Tomas Alfredson, so yes it’s in development. It did unbelievably well and it didn’t cost hardly anything. But things take time. Tim is passionate about making sure we do another one.”

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was of course adapted from the John le Carré novel of the same name. The author also wrote the follow-up novel Smiley’s People, which follows George Smiley coming out of retirement for another mission. No story details were given for the sequel, so it’s not known if it’s based directly on Le Carre’s novel or not.

Michael Shannon Set To Reap The Harvest For Director John McNaughton

December 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John McNaughton’s directing career has been pretty sporadic. He first broke out with 1986’s Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer, got people hot under the collar with 1998’s Wild Things, but he hasn’t helmed a movie since Speaking Of Sex in 2002.

Now he’s planning to return with The Harvest and has signed Michael Shannon, Samantha Morton, and Natasha Calis to star, according to Variety. The film, written by Stephen Lancellotti, isn about two parents (Shannon and Morton) who live in a secluded environment with their ailing son (Charlie Tahan). When a young girl (Calis) moves in next door, it gives the boy hope for a better life, but this doesn’t please his over-protective mother. Leslie Lyles and Meadow Williams also star.

McNaughton commented, “This is the first horror script I’ve been interested in in 25 years, so it’s kind of cool to return to the genre.”

Production is already underway in New York.
