Channing Tatum Circling White House Down

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Channing Tatum is getting ready to show off his action man skills, as he’s in talks to star in Sony’s action-thriller, White House Down, according to THR. Last month Roland Emmerich was in early talks to direct, and has now been confirmed to take the helm.

The story is described as Die Hard set in the White House, concentrating on a paramilitary takeover of the President’s official residence. Not too many other details about the script are known.

Sony is moving fast, as they only bought the script in March, but as it was the largest script sale this year, with James Vanderbilt (The Amazing Spider-Man) getting $3 million for it, you can see why they’d want to ensure a speedy return on their investment. No production schedule was revealed, but it shouldn’t be too long before it’s shooting.

Taylor Lautner Going Parkour In Tracers

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Taylor Lautner certainly seems keen to sell himself as an action star – but then I suppose having to do all that working out for Twilight needs to be good for something! He’s now signed on for Tracers, which will be sold to distributors at Cannes this month, according to Deadline.

The film sees Lautner as New York City bicycle messenger, Cam, who’s the hottest thing on two wheels, but is in debt to an organised crime gang. When he crashes his bike into a sexy stranger, Nikki, Cam is immediately seduced by her and the thrill of the world of parkour.

The film will be directed by Daniel Benmayor (Bruc, the Manhunt), and will reunite Lautner with Twilight producer Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. There’s no news on when exactly it might shoot.

The Amazing Spider-man Featurette – Meet Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors

May 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not too long until The Amazing Spider-man hits on July 4th, and now a new featurette has arrived that takes a look at Dr. Curt Connors, as played by Rhys Ifans, who becomes the villainous Lizard. Here’s the latest synopsis: ‘One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing Spider-Man™. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theatres everywhere in 3D.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.’

The Campaign Trailer – Will you vote for Will Ferrell or Zach Galifianakis?

May 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week some fun political ads arrived from The Campaign, and now a full trailer is here. In the film, when long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naive Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. The film is released this September.

Avengers Becomes First Film To Make $100 Million In Its Second Weekend

May 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After its record-breaking $207 million opening in the US last week, The Avengers isn’t done with setting firsts, as it’s become the first movie to ever make $100 at the North American box office in its second weekend, taking $103 million. On the way to that it became the fastest film ever to reach $300 and $350 million.

The film had plenty to cheer worldwide too, and globally its take now stands at $1.03, equalling Avatar and Harry 8’s record of getting there in only 17 days, an achievement made more impressive by the fact those film opened pretty much everywhere on the same day, while Avengers didn’t reach the US until a week and a half after its first openings in some other countries.

While Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows had been expected to open in the $35 million range, it ended up disappointing with only $25 million. It’s a lot softer than Warner Bros. would have been hoping and won’t be helped by relatively poor word of mouth over the coming weeks.

The only other new entry in the top 10 was the Eva Mendes comedy-drama Girl In Progress, which took $1.35 million to place 10th on the chart. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel also made its first appearance in the top 10, after expanding onto more screens following its limited opening last week. The movie took $2.6 million to place eighth.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of May 11th-13th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Avengers $103.1 $373.1
2 Dark Shadows $28.8 $28.8
3 Think Like A Man $6.3 $81.9
4 The Hunger Games $4.4 $386.9
5 The Lucky One $4.0 $53.7
6 The Pirates! Band Of Misfits $3.2 $23.1
7 The Five-Year Engagement $3.1 $24.3
8 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $2.6 $3.7
9 Chimpanzee $1.6 $25.5
10 Girl In Progress $1.3 $1.3

Neil Marshall Directing The Last Voyage of Demeter

May 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

For nearly a decade now, producers have been trying to get The Last Voyage Of The Demeter to the screen, with a seemingly endless list of directors coming and going from the movie, but no movie ever coming of it. They’re not giving up though, as after Robert Schwentke (Red), Marcus Nispel (Conan the Barbarian), Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters),and David Slade (Hard Candy) have all left the project, THR reports that Neil Marshall (Centurion, The Descent) has signed on to helm.

Bragi F. Schut wrote the original screenplay, which expands on a small portion of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel. The Demeter was the ship that transported the vampire from Transylvania to London, except the ship washes up on shore with only one survivor left. This story tells the tale of that voyage, where one undead passenger murdered the ship’s crew, one by one.

When David Slade was attached to the project, Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley were set to star. It isn’t known if the actors are still involved. There’s no news on when it might shoot (or giving it’s history, when the next director will come onboard).

Sam Claflin Joins Jared Harris In The Quiet Ones

May 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

On Stranger Tides wasn’t quite the star making turn that hottie Sam Claflin must have been hoping for, but it certainly raised his profile and he’s got another chance to really make an impact next month in Snow White and the Huntsman. Now it’s been announced that Claflin has signed on to star opposite Jared Harris in Hammer Film’s The Quiet Ones.

Claflin will play Bryan McNeil in the supernatural thriller/horror, which will be directed by John Pogue (Quarantine 2: Terminal) from and original screenplay by Tom de Ville, with revisions by Craig Rosenberg, Oren Moverman and most recently John Pogue. The movie will start shooting in June 2012 in the UK.

Inspired by true events (hmm, yeah right), The Quiet Ones tells the story of an unorthodox, but charismatic Professor (Harris) who uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist from negative human energy.

The Quiet Ones marks Hammer’s next production after the worldwide box office hit, The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which has taken over $130 million at the box-office worldwide to date.

Alfonso Poyart Eyes Anthony Hopkins’ Solace

May 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Despite the fact he feels a bit like he’s been coasting for the past decade, Anthony Hopkins is still a name to conjure with. Now he’s putting together a supernatural thriller called Solace, and Variety reports Brazilian director Afonso Poyart is now in talks to direct.

The film centres on a doctor (Hopkins) with psychic abilities, who hunts down a serial killer. No production start date has been set. The Queen’s Peter Morgan is currently revising his script, with Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson producing.

This project will mark Poyart’s English-language debut, after gaining attention for his Brazilian hit 2 Coelhos (a.k.a. Two Rabbits), which he starred in, directed, wrote and produced.
