Trumbo (Blu-ray Review)

June 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis C.K.
Director: Jay Roach
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 20th 2016 (UK)

Ever since it happened, Hollywood has had a rather tortured relationship with the Communist Witch Hunts of the 1950s. At the time the Studios largely lined up with the government and co-operated with something which most felt was wrong, but they were too afraid of what would happen to business if they didn’t. They didn’t think they could risk being seen to be defending possible communists, even if the battle against them seemed to go against American values.

As a result, stars and directors gave names to Congress, and Hollywood drew up a list of names who were blacklisted out of the industry due to their possible communist sympathies. Ever since the tide later turned against those who’d co-operated and especially those who agreed to testify in front of The House Un-American Activities Committee, Tinsel Town has never seemed certain what to do about one of its darker chapters, and has generally given it a wide berth. Trumbo Trailer – Bryan Cranston gets Blacklisted by Hollywood

August 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

TRUMBO-bryan-cranstonThis could be one of the films that will be reaping in the nominations come awards seasons, if its backers get their way. With a prime November US release planned, it’s main issue may be if Hollywood voters see it as too critical of their industry.

Now we get our first taste with a trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The successful career of 1940s screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) comes to a crushing end when he and other Hollywood figures are blacklisted for their political beliefs. TRUMBO (directed by Jay Roach) tells the story of his fight against the U.S. government and studio bosses in a war over words and freedom, which entangled everyone in Hollywood from Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) and John Wayne to Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger.’

That’s a roundabout way of saying that in 1947, Trumbo was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) during their investigation into Communist influences in Hollywood. He refused to testify and ‘name names’, and subsequently became one of the ‘Hollywood 10′ screenwriters who were blacklisted by the studio system.

However he continued to write under pen names, winning two Oscars in the 1950s under other names for Roman Holiday and The Brave One. When he was hired to write Spartacus, Kirk Douglas insisted he be allowed to do so under his own name, which helped put an end to blacklist once and for all. [Read more…]

Jay Roach To Direct Matt Damon & Ben Affleck Baseball Wife Swap Drama

May 9, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jay-roachMatt Damon and Ben Affleck have been hoping to reteam for The Trade for over three years, but it’s only now that it finally looks like it’s coming together. Variety reports that Jay Roach has signed on to direct the Warner Bros.’ baseball sex scandal drama.

The film is based on a true story from the 1970s when sandal erupted after it was revealed that two New York Yankees pitchers, Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich, had decided to swap wives. Although it has started off as a few swinging one-offs, they eventually decided to make the switch permanent. While it was an equitable arrangement that pleased all parties, the public wasn’t quite as understanding. Fritz and Susanne remain a couple till this day, while Mike and Marilyn drifted apart.

Affleck is eyeing the role of Peterson with Damon as Kekich. Casey Affleck is also likely to star, and indeed he also wrote the latest draft of the script, taking over from David Mandel. Previously both Affleck and Damon have considered directing, but they’ve not handed the reins to Roach.

Jay Roach is best known for comedies such as The Campaign, Meet The Parents, and the Austin Powers films, but has had success with drama such as Game Change and Recount.

Helen Mirren May Join Dalton Trumbo Biopic, Opposite Bryan Cranston

April 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

helen-mirrenIf you’re making a movie, it’s never a bad idea to cast Helen Mirren in it. The makers of the biopic Trumbo must think the same, as Variety reports the British actress is in talks for the movie, which is based on the life of Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. Bryan Cranston is set for the title role.

Trumbo became one of the most respected and sought after screenwriters of the 1940s, earning his first Oscar nomination in 1941 for writing Kitty Foyle. However his illustrious came to an abrupt halt in 1947, when he was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) during their investigation into Communist influences in Hollywood. He refused to testify and ‘name names’, and subsequently became one of the ‘Hollywood 10’ screenwriters who were blacklisted by the studio system.

However he continued to write under pen names, winning two Oscars in the 1950s under other names for Roman Holiday and The Brave One. When he was hired to write Spartacus, Kirk Douglas insisted he be allowed to do so under his own name, which helped put an end to blacklist once and for all.

Cranston is playing Dalton Trumbo, with Helen Mirren in talks to play his wife, Cleo.

Jay Roach is set to direct from a script by John McNamara.

Bryan Cranston Signs Up For Biopic Of Blacklisted Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo

September 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Bryan-CranstonWith Breaking Bad coming to an end, Bryan Cranston is looking for new projects. Now he’s landed his first major feature film starring role, as he’s to play blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in a biopic, simply called Trumbo, according to Variety.

Dalton was the highest-paid screenwriter of his era, earning an Oscar nomination for his screenplay Kitty Foyle. However, his career came crashing to a halt when he was called before House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), but refused to answer any questions about his political affiliations.

He was sent to prison and then became one of the infamous ‘Hollywood 10’, who were completely blacklisted from the studio system. Trumbo refused to give in and ended up winning two Academy Awards in the 1950s, for the classics Roman Holiday and The Brave One, which he wrote under pen names. He eventually launched a campaign to end the blacklist once and for all, going on to write other classics such as Spartacus, Exodus and Papillon. He died of lung cancer in 1976.

Jay Roach is set to direct from a screenplay by John McNamara, with filming planned for sometime next year.

Bradley Cooper May Play Lance Armstrong In Red Blooded American

August 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooper
Shortly after it was revealed in March that Paramount and J.J. Abrams were planning a biopic of Lance Armstrong, rumours suggested the want Bradley Cooper to star, which he denied. Now it seems he may play the disgraced cyclist after all, although in a different movie, as Deadline reports that he’s signed up to produce and probably star in Red Blooded American for Warner and director Jay Roach.

Roach has been attached since March, working from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (World War Z). Bradley Cooper will play one of the two main roles, either Lance Armstrong or Tyler Hamilton, the latter being Lance’s cycling teammate who was the one who first revealed that the seven-time Tour de France winner was using performance-enhancing drugs. After years of speculation and allegations, Armstrong finally came clean and admitted he was doping in a January interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The project is being put on the fast track as it’s jockeying against both Abrams’ Cycle of Lies, and a recently announced film from director Stephen Frears, which has Ben Foster attached to star. There’s no news on when Red Blooded American will shoot.

Jay Roach To Direct Lance Armstrong Biopic

March 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lance-armstrongJust hours after Lance Armstrong admitted to doping, a biopic was announced with Paramount and J.J. Abrams producing an adaptation of Juliet Macur’s book Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong. Now Warner Bros. has a competing Armstrong biopic in the works, with Deadline reporting that Jay Roach (Meet The Parents, Game Change) is set to direct from a script by Scott Z. Burns (Side Effects).

The Warner movie has secured the life rights of Tyler Hamilton, who was one of Lance Armstrong’s teammates on the United States Postal Service cycling team. He was one of the first to testify that Lance Armstrong was using performance-enhancing drugs, which Lance strenuously denied at the time. The studio is also trying to secure rights to the life stories of several others involved in the scandal.

Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing through their Atlas Entertainment company. It’s likely only one of the Armstrong biopics will go forward, but we’ll have to wait and see which one it is.

The Campaign (DVD)

January 19, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Will Ferrell, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Zach Galifianakis
Director: Jay Roach
Running Time: 80 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: January 21st 2013

Director Jay Roach had a bit of a political 2012. He made the HBO Sarah Palin biopic Game Change and the comedy The Campaign. For my money it was the former that was the most successful.

The Campaign is the sort of movie that will divide audiences – if you don’t mind films that leave reality in the dust and find their humour in stupidity, you’ll probably like it, but if you want your films to have some sort of logic to them, you’ll probably give up about 20 minutes in. Robert Downey Jr & Tom Cruise Eyed For El Presidente

May 15, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Austin Powers and Meet The Parents helmer Jay Roach is a man with a plan, as he’s currently putting together the action-comedy El Presidente, and wants Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr to play the leads, according to Vulture.

Cruise has already shown some interest as a couple of year ago he was attached to star in the movie, at which time Jack Nicholson was mooted to co-star. However we haven’t heard much about the film since, but now Cruise is still being name-dropped in connection to the movie, as is Robert Downey Jr. What isn’t clear it whether any offers have been made to the stars, or if it’s just hopeful speculation on the part of the director and producers.

The film ‘follows an overzealous Secret Service agent whose work-life boundary issues get him reassigned to the inglorious task of guarding America’s worst former president, who is a bumbling sleaze. The job suddenly becomes exciting when a threat is made on the ex-president’s life and they must go on the run.’ Downey Jr. would be the President and Cruise would be the Secret Service agent.

It’s still a long way off coming together yet, although at the moment Downey Jr. doesn’t have anything firmly booked in after Iron Man 3, and while Cruise has a couple of sci-fi films ready to shoot this year, he may be able to slot this in too. We’ll have to wait and see.

The Campaign Trailer – Will you vote for Will Ferrell or Zach Galifianakis?

May 14, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week some fun political ads arrived from The Campaign, and now a full trailer is here. In the film, when long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naive Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center. At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. The film is released this September.
