New Christopher Robin Trailer – Disney brings Winnie The Pooh to live-action life

July 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The recent Goodbye Christopher Robin took a traditional biopic look at Winnie The Pooh creator AA Milne. Well, Disney has a slightly different take on the life of Milne’s son, Christopher Robin, by completely fictionalising it and turning Winnie into a CG character in a live-action world.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In the heartwarming live action adventure, the young boy who embarked on countless adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood with his band of spirited and lovable stuffed animals, has grown up and lost his way. Now it is up to his childhood friends to venture into our world and help Christopher Robin remember the loving and playful boy who is still inside.

‘Disney’s “Christopher Robin” is directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by Alex Ross Perry and Allison Schroeder and a story by Perry based on characters created by A.A. Milne. The producers are Brigham Taylor and Kristin Burr with Renée Wolfe and Jeremy Johns serving as executive producers. The film stars Ewan McGregor as Christopher Robin; Hayley Atwell as his wife Evelyn; Bronte Carmichael as his daughter Madeline; and Mark Gatiss as Keith Winslow, Robin’s boss. The film also features the voices of: Jim Cummings as Winnie the Pooh; Chris O’Dowd as Tigger; Brad Garrett as Eeyore; Toby Jones as Owl; Nick Mohammed as Piglet; Peter Capaldi as Rabbit; and Sophie Okonedo as Kanga.’

The film is due in cinemas in August. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Wonder Park Trailer – A little girl’s imagination comes to animated life

July 10, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Wonder Park’s synopsis doesn’t tell us a lot, just saying, ‘Wonder Park tells the story of a magnificent amusement park where the imagination of a wildly creative girl named June comes alive.’ However, the first trailer has arrived to give us a better taste of what could be a fun film.

It’s also got a pretty good voice cast, including Jennifer Garner, Matthew Broderick, John Oliver, Mila Kunis, Kenan Thompson, Ken Jeong, Norbert Leo Butz, and Ken Hudson Campbell.

Not all has gone smoothly with the movie, as the original director, Dylan Brown, was removed from the film following multiple accusations of harassment and inappropriate conduct. No replacement has been announced yet. Take a look at the trailer below. The film is due out early 2019. [Read more…]

Scarlett Johansson Criticised For Response To Controversy Over Taking Trans Role

July 9, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

In the last few years cisgender actors playing transgender roles has become an ever growing issue, with an increasing backlash against the likes of Jared Leto in The Dallas Buyers Club, Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl and more recently Matt Bomer in Anything. The voices have grown loud enough that it’s difficult to imagine the major actors and their agents are completely unaware that the tide has shifted.

However, following criticism of Scarlett Johansson for taking a trans role in the upcoming biopic Rub & Tug, her agent has given a tone deaf response that appears to suggest she’s completely unaware of what’s been going in in the last few years. Rub & Tug will tell the story of Dante ‘Tex’ Gill, a real-life 1970s mob-style figure, who providing steroids to NFL player and ran a string of massage parlours. Gill was also very masculine, asked to be referred to by male pronouns and may have started hormone treatment.

Despite Johansson facing ‘whitewashing’ accusations for her role in Ghost In The Shell, her reps were dismissive of criticism of her for taking a trans role, saying of the critics (via Bustle), “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.” While all those actors have had success playing trans roles, they were not without their critics and happened before a growing rethink of the issue was starting to gain mainstream traction.

There are growing voices that feel cisgender actors playing trans roles is particularly harmful as they feel it perpetuates the idea that their gender identity is something they are ‘dressing up’ or ‘acting’ as, rather than it being a innate part of themselves. The reaction of Johansson’s reps is yet more evidence of how difficult it often is for trans people to have their voices heard.

50s Teen Idol And Out Gay Icon Tab Hunter Dies Aged 86

July 9, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Tab Hunter, the 1950s star of the likes of Damn Yankees!, who came out as gay in his 2005 memoir, has died, aged 86. Born Arthur Andrew Kelm on July 11th, 1931, Tab was a talented ice skater and horse rider as a teen, who joined the coastguard and then almost accidentally segued into acting.

With his charm and good looks, he was spotted by Warner Bros. who groomed him to be one of the first teen idols, finding success in the likes of Battle Cry, The Golden Arrow, The Sea Chase and, perhaps most famously, Damn Yankees!. He also has a successful singing career.

In the mid 1950s, the tabloid Confidential outed him as gay, which affected his career but didn’t destroy it. That was partly due to the studio helping to cover things up (while also leaving its options open, as they also allowed Confidential to out Tab – who’d been betrayed by a former manager – in exchange for them not outing Rock Hudson. Hunter was forced to stay closeted though, going on studio mandated dates and hiding relationships with the liked of Anthony Perkins.

Although his Hollywood career declined after the 50s, he continued to work both on the screen and in theatre. Later appearances including a cameo in Grease 2 as well as appearing opposite Divine in John Waters’ Polyester (1981) and Paul Bartel’s Lust in the Dust (1985).

He wrote his memoir, Tab Hunter Confidential, in 2005, in which he publicly came out for the first time, and wrote about his experiences being a gay movie star in the 1950s. That memoir was more recently turned into an excellent, award-winning documentary (you can read our review here). It was recently revealed that JJ Abrams and Zachary Quinto are working on a movie about Hunter’s relationship with Anthony Perkins.

Hunters passed away due to complications from deep vein thrombosis. His partner of over 35 years, Allan Glaser, said it was “unexpected and sudden.”

Discreet Trailer – Travis Mathews’ erotic, queer look at modern American masculinity & politics

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Travis Mathews has gained a lot of fans for his In Their Room series, as well as both the short and feature-length versions of I Want Your Love, and his collaboration with James Franco, Interior Leather Bar. Now he’s returning with Discreet, which arrives on DVD/VoD in the UK on July 23rd.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From the acclaimed director of I Want Your Love and Interior Leather Bar. DISCREET is a powerful contemporary psychological thriller that explores both the allure of YouTube gurus and the cyclic nature of trauma and abuse.

‘Filmmaker and recluse Alex lives in a van. He sets up his camera in rural areas in the US, in the no-man’s land near highways. During a rare visit to his distant mother, she reveals a dark truth hidden since his childhood that threatens to unravel him. Confused and unstable, Alex sets out to confront the looming shadow he has been running from all his life. But as he delves deeper in search of answers, Alex’s grip on reality becomes increasingly more tenuous and before long he finds himself unable to determine right from wrong.

‘DISCREET stars Johnny Man (A Ghost Story), Joy Cunningham, Atsuko Okatsuka, and Jordan Elsass, and offers a disturbing insight into the dark heart of Trump’s America.’

A Gay Coming Out Scene Didn’t Make It Into Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Once again a major tentpole Hollywood release has toyed with having a LGBT major character, but then backed out of explicitly mentioning by leaving it on the cutting room floor. Following in the footsteps of the likes of Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, Vice Admiral Holdo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and (allegedly) Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, is Dr. Zia Rodriguez in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The actress behind the paleo-veterinarian character, Daniella Pineda, has revealed that they filmed a scene where Zia reveals she’s a lesbian, or at least somewhere on the LGBT spectrum. Talking to Yahoo!, Pineda says, “I look at Chris and I’m like: ‘Yeah, square jaw, good bone structure, tall, muscles. I don’t date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I’d do it.’ I love that I’m looking at Chris Pratt, the hottest guy in the world, and I’m like, ‘It would gross me out, but I guess I would do it!’ It was also cool, because it was a little insight into my character. But they cut it.”

The scene was cut, according to the character, because the original cut of the movie was two hours and 40 minutes long. As a result this character moment was removed during the process of getting it down to a more manageable 127 minutes.

This excuse has been used over and over again in Hollywood though, as it’s wearing a little thing. It’s probably true that in the filmmaker and studio’s minds, timing is the reason these scenes end up getting was removed, but that’s because the LGBT sides of characters in huge movies are always written as so tangential, which makes them so easy to remove. In nearly every case where one of these films has flirted with explicitly saying they’ve got a gay character, it’s been mentioned or hinted at in a single scene. Although a couple of these scenes have made it to the screen – such as the ‘gay moment’ in Beauty and the Beast – most have ended up on the cutting room floor simply because they were written in a way that almost by design made it superfluous and at risk of seeming tokenistic.

Until screenwriters realise that a LGBT character’s sexuality can be woven into the movie in the same way it is for most straight people (who tend to flirt and mention their attraction to people of the opposite sex more than once in an entire movie), it’s likely we’ll keep hearing about how a massive movie filmed a gay scene but it ended up on the cutting room floor.

Welcome to Marwen Trailer – Steve Carell creates a miniature world for Robert Zemeckis

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Director Robert Zemeckis returns with Welcome To Marwen, which some think may be in the award season running next year (although it’s way too early to say). It’s certainly being lined up for one with a late 2018 release planned.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Welcome to Marwen tells the miraculous true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit. When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation—a testament to the most powerful women he knows—through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.

‘In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.’

New The Meg Trailer – Jason Statham takes on a truly Giant Shark

June 20, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Meg may be one of the worst film titles around (and even worse than the book it’s based on, which was simply titled ‘Meg’), but the movie might prove to be guilty pleasure fun. It’s basically Jaws on steroids but with its tongue slightly in its cheek.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jason Statham (“Spy,” “Furious 7,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Forbidden Kingdom,” “The Message”) star in the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies, “Last Vegas”).

‘A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.’

The film is due in UK cinemas on August 10th. Take a look at the new poster and trailer below.  [Read more…]

Hunger Games’ Amandla Stenberg Reveals That She Now Identifies As Gay

June 18, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Amandla Stenberg is part of a generation of young artists and performers who seem more comfortable talking about their sexuality than has been true for many of those older than them. The actress has previously talked about being queer, bisexual, pansexual and/or gender fluid, but now the 19-year has said that she currently identifies as gay.

The up and coming Stenberg is perhaps still best known for playing Rue in The Hunger Games movies, but also impressed many as one of the leads in last year’s teen romance, Everything Everything. She is tipped by many as a major star of the future.

Talking to Wonderland she told them, ‘Yep, I’m gay… I’m grateful for how being gay has afforded me this ability to experience and understand love and sex, and therefore life, in an expansive and infinite way. The continual process of unlearning heteronormativity and internalized homophobia can be difficult, but one of the biggest blessings lies in the magic that comes from having to understand love outside the confines of learned heterosexual roles.’

She was also keen to point out that,My sexuality is not a byproduct of my past experiences with men, who I have loved, but rather a part of myself I was born with and love deeply.’

Stenberg confirmed she saw the interview as a true coming out (in print at least), with a rainbow colured Instagram post where she wrote, ‘OUT & PROUD. So happy to say the words Yep, I’m Gay in official print. Interviewed for @wonderland by someone I stan infinitely – the fiercest garbagio pop queen @kingprincess69. Thank you to KP for providing me with such a safe space to come out. We talk about gay sobbing, first encounters with lesbian masturbation, queer icons, Toni Morrison, disillusionment as a critical step, the art I’ve been working on, and the films that I have coming out this year. Full interview on newsstands now and available online Monday.’

You can read the full interview over at Wonderland. [Read more…]
