New Passengers Trailer – Chris Pratt & Jennifer Lawrence get lost in space

November 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

passengers-slide2I think the thing I like about this new trailer for Passengers is Chris Pratt’s expression, where he largely looks like he has no idea how he got on a spaceship. Like most of what Pratt does, it’s oddly endearing and helps suggest that despite the epic visuals, this won’t just be a typical sci-fi action fest. There are also some interesting hints toward Kubrick – from 2001 to The Shining – that are rather intriguing too.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt are two passengers onboard a spaceship transporting them to a new life on another planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when their hibernation pods mysteriously wake them 90 years before they reach their destination. As Jim and Aurora try to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction… only to be threatened by the imminent collapse of the ship and the discovery of the truth behind why they woke up.’

The movie will be released in December, with many expecting it to be a major hit, and that it may even get some awards consideration. It certainly look like it could be pretty good. [Read more…]

Ben Wheatley & Tom Hiddleston May Reteam For Frank Miller’s Hard Boiled Adaptation

November 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

high-rise-teaser-slideDirector Ben Wheatley’s High Rise got a mixed reception this year, but it was clear from interviews that he and star Tom Hiddleston enjoyed working together. Now they may be getting back together, as Deadline reports that Wheatley is planning an adaptation of Frank Miller’s 1990 graphic novel, Hard Boiled, which Hiddleston may star in.

Warner Brothers is backing the movie, which ‘focuses on insurance investigator Carl Seltz, who learns that he’s really a homicidal cyborg tax collector codenamed Nixon. A fellow robot informs him that he’s the last hope for their race to escape their programmed slavery.’ As this is Frank Miller, it’s even more nuts than that sounds, with multiple personalities, unusual characters and murky morality in play.

It’s not known when the movie might reach cinemas, and Hiddleston isn’t firmly attached yet, but it’s being developed as a star vehicle for him. Wheatley’s next film, Free Fire, is due in theatres early next year.

Hairspray Live! Teaser – Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Derek Hough & co. can’t stop the beat

November 22, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hairspray-live-slideAmerican TV has found a new love of live stagings of musical, with the likes of The Sound Of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz and most particularly Grease all having successful outings. This December Hairspray is getting the same treatment, and to help drum up interest, a teaser for the production has arrived – which certainly makes it look like this won’t stray far from the movie version, even if it has the stage version’s Harvey Fierstein in one of the key roles.

The great cast cast includes Fierstein as Edna Turnblad, Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Mabel, Martin Short as Wilbur Turnblad, Derek Hough as Corny Collins, Ariana Grande as Penny Pingleton, Andrea Martin as Prudy Pingleton and Kristin Chenoweth as Velma Von Tussle. Rosie O’Donnell and Sean Hayes will also make special appearances.

The live broadcast will air on Wednesday, Dec. 7th at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). Take a look at the new teaser below. [Read more…]

When We Rise Trailer – First look at Gus Van Sant & Dustin Lance Black’s epic gay right mini-series

November 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

when-we-rise-trailer-slideWow, who thought a gay rights mini-series could get the American alt-right steamed up so quickly. Actually forget that, they’re sitting around waiting to get steamed up and ridiculously outraged by things, while coming up with bizarre conspiracy theories around it, all the time. You just need to take a look through the comments for the trailer for When We Rise to see that those who love to be angry about stuff in racist, anti-Semitic, misogynistic, homophobic and generally aggressive ways (while whining about how white men are the most oppressed people in the history of humanity), are not happy about it. But you know what? Screw ’em.

When We Rise is an eight-part mini-series due to air next February on ABC in the US, which chronicles the rise of the gay-rights movement from the Stonewall riots to the triumphs of recent year – although with the election of Trump, it’s likely to also be a timely reminder of the need to keep fighting. Written by Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black and produced and part-directed by Gus Van Sant, it is perhaps particularly angering the alt-right as it is probably the highest-profile and biggest gay-themed drama US TV has ever produced.

It’s also got a great cast, including Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker, Rachel Griffiths, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Denis O’Hare, David Hyde Pierce, Michael K. Williams, Charlie Caver and Ivory Aquino.

Black has commented, “It’s been the honor of my life to research and craft these stories of family, diversity and equality over the past three years. To have collaborators of this caliber sign on to help bring these stories to life is a tremendous vote of confidence, and I hope a testament to the relevancy and necessity of our continued march toward justice for all.”

Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Chris Evans Talks About How His Gay Brother Scott Helped Inspire Him To Stand Up For Gay & Other Rights

November 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Chris Evans and Scott Evans

Chris Evans and Scott Evans

Captain America star Chris Evans has long been known as a big supporter of gay rights, and also a big supporter of his gay brother Scott (who’s probably best known for his role in US soap One Life To Live). Now Chris has been talking to The Fix about how those two things are, unsurprisingly, not a coincidence.

Talking of growing up around women as well as with his brother, he says, “It’s important to understand, whether it’s growing up with women, whether it’s growing up with other ethnic groups, it’s important to experience anything different from what you know. To encourage and cultivate compassion and understanding.

“So certainly growing up with women helped me, but growing up in the theatre helped me, growing up in a progressive community helped me. I think it’s really important to put faces to the situations that we’re navigating as society.”

He adds he feels he’s been lucky, as “I’ve never felt any sort of backlash or friction as a result of the stance I’ve taken in my career in support of [my brother] or any other human rights… hopefully it stays that way going forward.”

Chloe Moretz Set To Star In Drama About Gay Conversion Therapy

November 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chloe-moretzA few months ago Chloe Moretz dropped out of all the movies she was attached to and suggested she wanted to take time out. However it quickly turned out that rather than not making movies, she wanted to take a break from making decision based on what it would do for her career, and instead get involved in projects that are important to her.

Now she’s found another of those projects, as THR reports that she’s set to star in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which takes a look at the issues surrounding gay conversion therapy.

The movie is based on Emily Danforth’s coming-of-age novel, which ‘is set in 1993 and follows a girl forced into gay conversion therapy center after getting caught with the prom queen.’ The film will see ‘Moretz as Cameron, an orphan who’s taken in by her ultra-conservative aunt. American Honey breakout star Lane will play Cameron’s friend and fellow “disciple” at the conversion therapy clinic to which they are sent. The cast also includes John Gallagher Jr. (Short Term 12), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant) and Jennifer Ehle (A Quiet Passion).’

Desiree Akhavan will direct. She is best known for the excellent Appropriate Behaviour about the life of a bisexual Iranian-American, who’s looking for a new direction in life. She also recently signed on to be the lead in the UK comedy series, The Bisexual.

Gay-themed projects are certainly close to Moretz’s heart, as she has previously talked about how seeing her two gay brothers come out and get bullied for their sexuality helped motivate her to fight for LGBT and other rights.

Cars 3 Teaser Trailer – Lightning McQueen revs up for another Pixar adventure

November 21, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

cars-3-teaser-slideMany wondered why of all the Pixar movies, they decided to make a sequel to Cars. After that follow-up wasn’t as big a success as most of the animation studios’s film, it perplexed even more people that they announced they were making another Cars movie. There are two good reasons though – first, the franchise is dear to the heart of Pixar’s head honcho, John Lasseter, and secondly and perhaps more importantly, in merchandising terms it’s one of the biggest properties Disney has ever owned, making continuing it very lucrative proposition irrespective of the actual box office receipts.

Now the first teaser for Cars 3 has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

‘Directed by Brian Fee (storyboard artist “Cars,” “Cars 2“) and produced by Kevin Reher (“A Bug’s Life,” “La Luna” short), “Cars 3” cruises into cinemas on 14th July, 2017.’ [Read more…]
