Guy Ritchie to Direct Disney’s Live-Action Aladdin Movie

October 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

guy-ritchieDisney is soon going to run out of classic animated movies to turn live action, as after the likes of Maleficent, Cinderella and The Jungle Book, we’ve got films such as Beauty & The Beast, Mulan and Aladdin coming. The latter now has a director, with Guy Ritchie stepping into the breach.

The Sherlock Holmes and Man From U.N.C.L.E. helmer is in talks to help develop the movie and direct, with John August (Big FIsh) writing the script. It’s not known how closely it will stick to the 1992 animated version, about a street urchin in who gets hold of a magic lamp with a genie inside that grants him three wishes. It’ll be interesting to see if they keep the genie as a shapeshifting, pop culture reference spewing comic force, or whether they turn him into something a little more sinister.

As well as the films mentioned above, Disney is also developing Jungle Book and Maleficent sequels, as well as live-action takes on The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. So they’ve certainly got a very full slate.

The Falls: Covenant of Grace Trailer – The story of gay Mormons RJ and Chris continues

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-falls-covenant-of-graceVery few gay-themed films get a sequel, but The Falls is now preparing for the release of its third instalment. That’s thanks to the fact the first two movies are good, and that it’s gained enough fans to help with crowdfunding to get part three made.

The first film followed Mormon missionaries RJ and Nick, who fall in love even though they know they risk being rejected by their families and thrown out of their religion. The follow-up caught up with them after they had split up and Chris had married a woman. RJ meanwhile had fully accepted his sexuality, but hadn’t accepted the end of his relationship with Chris.

So what about the third film? Here’s the synopsis: ‘The Falls: Covenant of Grace picks up one year after the events of The Falls: Testament of Love. When the Church of Latter-Day Saints makes an announcement against the baptism of children of same-sex couples, RJ calls Chris to talk about his feelings towards the matter.

‘They decide to meet in Portland for a weekend to address their Mormon faith, and discuss their relationship. Together, they must decide whether to go their separate ways, or try to build a life together despite the disapproval of the Mormon church, and their family members. If they choose to be together, can their faith still play a role in their lives? Or will the two men have to choose between God and love?’

Breaking Glass Pictures will be releasing the movie in the US soon. [Read more…]

Grey’s Anatomy Star Sara Ramirez Reveals She Is Bisexual

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sara-ramirezFor the past few years, Sara Ramirez has played one of the greatest bisexual characters ever on TV, Grey’s Anatomy’s Callie Torres. She’s recently left the show behind, but has left a great legacy with a character who had complex relationships with both men and women, and who never equivocated about the fact she was bisexual, and not gay or straight.

Now she’s revealed that she’s also bisexual in real life, and has done so with an inspiring message and while showing off a snazzy new haircut. Ramirez gave a speech at the True Colors 40 to None Summit where she said, “So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections – whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status.”

“And, because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of colour, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides. I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to.”

You can take a look at the tweet she put out to accompany her speech below, as well as video of the whole thing. [Read more…]

The Great Wall Trailer – Matt Damon heads into medieval Chinese action

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

great-wall-slideWith China now the second biggest market for movies in the world and Chinese companies investing heavily in film, Hollywood is on the lookout for ways to tap in the Middle Kingdom’s money. There’s also Legendary Pictures – makers of Godzilla and The Dark Knight Movies – which was bought by Chinese investors. That’s helped result in The Great Wall, which star Matt Damon but takes us into Chinese history and one of its most iconic structures.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Starring global superstar Matt Damon and directed by one of the most breathtaking visual stylists of our time, Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), Legendary’s The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. The first English-language production for Yimou is the largest film ever shot entirely in China. The Great Wall also stars Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau.’

While he all know The Great Wall as looking pretty in pictures, it’s rather cool to see it being used for its original intention, as a massive defensive structure. However, we’re hoping it doesn’t give Donald Trump any more ideas.

The film will be out early next year. Take a look at the teaser trailer below. [Read more…]

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

power-rangers-costumes-slideShiny lycra, men in monster suits, stunningly cheap looking special effects – that’s what Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is all about, right? Well, not any more, as for its movie reboot it’s been given a bigger budget and some far better production values.

While we’ve had a few pictures, that’s now been followed by the first official teaser trailer. Take a look at it below.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. John Wick: Chapter 2 Teaser Trailer – Keanu Reeves is back in action

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

john-wick-chapter-2John Wick got a lot of praise, not necessarily for its plot, but for its almost comic book style and for the quality of its action. Indeed, it reminded many of why pure action has always been so popular. Now it’s coming back for a sequel.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this next chapter following the 2014 hit, legendary hitman John Wick [Keanu Reeves] is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers.’

Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, John Leguizamo and Ian McShane also star, with Chad Stahelski directing. Take a look at the teaser trailer below. [Read more…]

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Trailer – Milla Jovovich is back as Alice one last time

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

resident-evil-final-chapter-poster-slideBelieve it or not, Resident Evil is the most-successful videogame-to-movie franchise ever. Now it’s returning once more with a fifth film featuring Milla Jovovich as Alice – although as the title suggests, this one is planned as the last instalment (until they inevitably decide to reboot it).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.’

The film will be out next February. Take a look at the new trailer below. [Read more…]

Gold Trailer – Matthew McConaughey searches for riches in the Indonesian jungle

October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gold-slideMatthew McConaughey has certainly come a long way from being the king of awful rom-coms. Indeed, he hasn’t made one for year. Next up he’s got Gold, which those behind it must feel could be an awards contender as it’s being given an Oscar friendly Christmas release in the US.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘GOLD is the epic tale of one man’s pursuit of the American dream, to discover gold. Starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a prospector desperate for a lucky break, he teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. Getting the gold was hard, but keeping it would be even harder, sparking an adventure through the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street. The film is inspired by a true story.’

Jewel’s Catch One Trailer – Looking at a woman who opened a space for everyone, & still fights on

October 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jewels-catch-one-slideThe documentary Jewel’s Catch One is screening as part of the BFI London Film Festival’s SONIC program on October 8th & 9th, and it certainly looks like one it’ll be interesting to catch.

Jewel’s Catch One tells the story of Jewel Thais-Williams and her popular ‘Jewel’s Catch One’ nightclub – often called the Studio 54 of the West.  It was a hub for cutting edge fashion & music for over 42 years in LA before it closed last year.  While Jewel opened her doors to everyone – all races & sexual orientations – the club became a target of racism & homophobia, especially during the AIDS crisis. She even turned her parking lot into a soup kitchen during that time, to make sure people could get care, when so many were being ostracized. Jewel became a civil rights leader, and then ultimately a healer, who has now saved countless lives through her Village Healthcare Foundation.

The documentary has been a labor of love for the last six years for filmmaker C. Fitz, who met Jewel after volunteering to direct a 3 minute short for charity – and realising there was a much greater story to tell.  The film is narrated by CCH Pounder and features exclusive interviews with Sharon Stone, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Thelma Houston, Sandra Bernhard, Bonnie Pointer, Thea Austin, Jenifer Lewis – and also features footage from Madonna’s 2000 album release party there (she was also rumoured to learn to Vogue at the club!).  It, also, of course, features some of the best songs from the disco age!

Take a look at the trailer below. You can buy tickets for the BFI London Film Festival screenings here: https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/lff/Online/jewelscatchone  [Read more…]
