My Own Private Idaho: Premium Collection (Blu-ray Review) – Gus Van Sant’s gay classic gets a new release

April 8, 2018 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, William Richert, Udo Kier, Flea
Director: Gus Van Sant
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: April 9th 2018 (UK)

My Own Private Idaho is the sort of film that really shouldn’t work. The movie apparently came about when writer/director Gus Van Sant was working on three separate scripts and then decided to merge them all together. The result is a movie that ought to be a mess. The tone and story jump about, some of its pretty random and surreal, and its Shakespearean pretentions are a bit bizarre.

However, it works. These disparate elements and tones come together, helped by an astonishing performance by River Phoenix as young hustler Mike. His character – an outsider living a marginal and disintegrating existence – is a reflection of the film itself. It ultimately becomes an unexpected masterclass of montage – where by placing seemingly disparate things side-by-side and throwing in unexpected imagery (not least the famous falling barn), it creates something unique and pulls you into a character and world in a way few other films have ever managed. Replicas Trailer – Keanu Reeves wants to clone his dead family

October 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Keanu Reeves must be tired of shooting people in the head for a living, as he’s taking a break from the John Wick universe for Replicas. Alice Eve and Thomas Middleditch also star.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this sci-fi thriller, neuro-scientist William Foster (Keanu Reeves) is on the verge of successfully transferring human consciousness into a computer when his family is tragically killed in a car crash. Desperate to resurrect them, William recruits fellow scientist Ed Whittle (Thomas Middleditch) to help him secretly clone their bodies and create replicas. But he soon faces a “Sophie’s choice” when it turns out that they can only bring three of the four family members back to life.’

Expect Replicas in cinemas either late this year or early 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

It’s an exceedingly personal project, as it’s based on her own experiences battling anorexia. Lily Collins plays the central role of Ellen, a young woman who ‘is dealing with anorexia. She meets an unconventional doctor who challenges her to face her condition and embrace life.’

Keanu Reeves is the doctor.

The Bad Batch Teaser Trailer – Keanu Reeves is a cult leader in a cannibal wasteland

February 14, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s not a good day when you end up a in wasteland inhabited by bloodthirsty cannibals. However, in The Bad Batch there’s an area of Texas that’s no longer Texas, as it’s been abandoned by the United States and they’re having nothing to do with anyone who enters it – and that’s at least partly due to the cannibals.

Plus, Keanu Reeves shows up as a cult leader.

For what sounds like a low-rent horror movie, The Bad Batch has a surprisingly good cast, with Reeves joined by Jason Momoa, Giovanni Ribisi, Jim Carrey, Diego Luna and Suki Waterhouse. It got an interesting but mixed reception at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it certainly sounds like it might be worth a watch.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The highly anticipated follow-up to [Ana Lily] Amirpour’s acclaimed directorial debut, A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, THE BAD BATCH follows Arlen (Waterhouse) as she is unceremoniously dumped in a Texas wasteland fenced off from civilized society. While trying to orient her unforgiving environment, she is captured by a savage band of cannibals and quickly realizes she’ll have to fight her way through her new reality. As Arlen adjusts to life in ‘the bad batch’ she discovers that being good or bad mostly depends on who you’re standing next to.’

The movie is due out in the summer. [Read more…]

John Wick: Chapter 2 Trailer Keanu Reeves is ready to kick ass once more!

December 19, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

John Wick got a lot of praise, not necessarily for its plot, but for its almost comic book style and for the quality of its action. Indeed, it reminded many of why pure action has always been so popular. Now it’s coming back for a sequel.

The Whole Truth Trailer – Keanu Reeves tries to keep Renée Zellweger’s son out of jail

whole-truth-slideKeanu Reeves has been in dark action/thriller mode for the last couple of years, but now he’s heading into the courtroom to play a lawyer. The film also features Renée Zellweger, showing she’s now just returning to the world of movies for Bridget Jones movies.

The Neon Demon Trailer – Nicolas Winding Refn teams with Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves & Christina Hendricks

April 14, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neon-demon-pic1Nicolas Winding Refn has been working on Neon Demon for several years, but he’s been keeping details about the exact plot to himself. Even with this first trailer, things aren’t exactly made clear, but it does look rather intriguing.

IMDB says of the film, ‘When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.’

Refn has previously said of the movie, “One morning I woke and realized I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty. After making Drive and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew I had to return to tell the story of The Neon Demon. This movie is a manifestation of the strong ties between us and will lead to many more adventures.”

The likes of Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks star. [Read more…]
