Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures Trailer – Into the life of the controversial gay photographer

March 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

robert-mapplethorpeA biopic is in the works of Robert Mapplethorpe, with Matt Smith currently set to play the provocative photographer. However, before then the documentary Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures will take us into the world of a man who caused a culture wars furore and in the process brought in-your-face queer art into the public consciousness like never before.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Following the hugely successful World premiere at Sundance Film Festival, Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures by Emmy Award winning directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbarto (Inside Deep Throat, Party Monster, The Eyes of Tammy Faye) about the life, work and legacy of controversial artist Robert Mapplethorpe will open in UK cinemas 22nd April 2016.

‘Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures is the first definitive feature-length portrait of artist Robert Mapplethorpe since his death from AIDS 1989. With two museums currently preparing joint retrospectives of Mapplethorpe’s work, theJ. Paul Getty Museum and The Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA), the directors took the opportunity to access rare and never before seen materials from his earliest forays into art and photography, to his work depicting the BDSM culture, to his delicate flower still lifes, to his portraiture – every aspect of his work is covered in this film

‘In addition to this wealth of material, Barbarto and Bailey use never before heard audio recordings of Mapplethorpe with interviews with his family, friends, lovers, and collaborators including: Edward Mapplethorpe, Fran Lebowitz, Brice Marden, Debbie Harry, Carolina Herrera, Bob Colacello, Brooke Shields, Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Ken Moody, and Richard Sherman. Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures is a document of an ambitious and daring artist who challenged social norms and pushed boundaries with his confrontational images and created a rich market for photography.’

The film will be in UK cinemas on April 22nd, with the film due to air on HBO in the US around the same time. Take a look at the trailer below. It will also screen at the BFI Flare LGBT Film Festival on March 19th and 21st.

Me Him Her Trailer – A closeted gay TV star wants out of the closet in Max Landis’ directorial debut

March 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

me-him-her-slideMax Landis – son of director John Landis – has made quite a name for himself writing the likes of Chronicle, American Ultra, and Victor Frankenstein. Now he’s moving into the director’s chair himself to tell a gay-themed tale called Me Him Her.

The film is about drifter Corey (Dustin Milligan), who heads to LA to help his TV star friend (Luke Bracey) take his first steps out of the college. Along the way they meet  a lesbian (Emily Meade), who’s still getting over a breakup.

Interestingly Landis says much of it is based on a true story, telling EW recently that, “Most of the things in the movie really happened to me. There are large elements of the movie that are based on a true story, which is the only thing I’ve ever written like that. I almost never write about myself in scripts. Me Him Her is sort of the lone exception to that rule.”

Take a look at the new trailer below. The film gets a limited cinema release and will be available via VoD from March 11th in the US.

Meet Team Iron Man In More Captain America: Civil War Character Posters

March 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-civil-war-character7-slideYesterday we were introduced to Team Cap with a set of six character posters. Now it’s time to see who they’ll be up against with posters for Team Iron Man. The heroes are ready for battle, with Iron Man, Vision, War Machine, Black Panther and Black Widow up against Captain America and his crew.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.’

The movie hits cinema in May. Take a look at the new posters below.

J.K. Simmons Joins Justice League As Commissioner Gordon

March 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jk-simmons

It looks like Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons is swapping teams, as after playing Daily Planet editor J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-man movies, he’s hopping across to the DC stable to play Commissioner Gordon in the Justice League movies, according to THR.

There’s not too much info on how the policeman will figure into the plot of the movie, but Simmons will join the likes of Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and his presence also suggest Gotham City will feature in the movie. The role will see the actor head to the Justice League: Part One set in mid-April, shortly after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

Zack Snyder is directing the movie, which is due for release in November 2017, with Justice League: Part Two pencilled in for July 2019. It’s not known is Simmons is likely to be seen in any of the other planned DC movies.

Captain America: Civil War Character Posters Emerge – Meet Team Cap

March 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

captain-america-civil-war-character1-slideI’m presuming next year’s crop of tenpole movies will see a lot of superheroes heading off for relationship counselling, as this year they’re all fighting. After Batman v Superman we’ll be getting Captain America: Civil War, which will see the Avengers fighting with one another, with the two sides led by the Cap and Iron Man.

It’s all going to get very messy, with most of the Marvel line-up involved, except for Thor and Hulk (who are presumably off getting ready for Thor: Ragnarok, which will feature both of them). To help prepare us, a set of character posters have been released, which appear to show us the characters who will be on Captain America’s side. You can take a look at them below.

Top Cat Begins Trailer – The cool feline returns with his own CGI animated origin story

March 7, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

top-cat-begins-slideI think it’s safe to safe having watched the trailer for Top Cat Begins, that the digital artists at the likes of Pixar, Dreamworks Animation, Illumination and Blu Sky aren’t going to be worried that the makers of this new movie are going to blow them out of the water with the quality of their CGI. In fact all the background characters look oddly like zombies.

However, that doesn’t mean the kids won’t like this new take on the classic 1960s cartoon, and it’s a step up from the odd part CG, part hand-drawn world of 2011’s Top Cat: The Movie. It might also be a surprise that both these recent Top Cat movies are actually Mexican production.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Tracing the roots of the famous animated series from cartoon legends Hanna-Barbera, get set for this ‘purrfect’ feature adventure that tells the ‘tail’ of how our hero, T.C. created his infamous, Manhattan alley cats gang. Poor, lonely and living on the streets, Top Cat is one sad cat, until a chance meeting with Benny, a naive and good-hearted cat looking for adventure. The pair quickly become best buddies – and partners in crime – pick pocketing their way out of poverty and quickly believing they are the real cats’ whiskers! Setting their sights higher, they decide to steal from Mr. Big, a mysterious diamond-stealing henchman who rules New York’s backstreets. As Top Cat and Benny hatch a plan to take the diamonds for themselves, little do they know, success is just the start of their problems. Along the way, our heroes meet fellow alley cats Choo Choo, Fancy-Fancy and Brain, and together they’re a formidable bunch. However, when Mr. Big catches up with them and captures Top Cat, can his new friends save the day?

‘Staring Jason Harris (Top Cat: The Movie, Rio 2), David Hoffman (Bridesmaids) and Chris Edgerly (Happy Feet, The Simpsons) and director Andres Couturier, TOP CAT comes to UK cinemas May 27.’

RainBRO Film About Homophobe Sent To Gay Conversion Camp Seeks Funding

March 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rainbro-slideIt’s time for another crowdfunded movie campaign, this time for RainBRO, which is seeking $50,000 cover all the pre-production costs and hopefully convice financiers to take a chance of the movie. And if you do help out, you could even get some RainBRO underwear!

The movie is about a homophobic high school bully, who is ‘accidentally sent to a gay reform summer camp, he must find a way to escape before his bad boy reputation is ruined forever. On his hilarious, yet heartfelt journey, he meets a diverse host of characters that ultimately challenge the way he sees the world, and himself.’

The makers add that, they see RainBRO as, “a coming-of-age teen comedy that highlights important issues that everyone – straight and gay alike – deals with, while embracing a heartfelt message of love, acceptance, and tolerance. With kids and teens still struggling to find a way out of the metaphorical closet, a movie like this needs to be made! The true power of this movie comes from showcasing an array of characters from different walks of life. Being cognizant of how gay people are often portrayed in the media, we as filmmakers also felt it was time to redefine the stereotypes behind the so-called “sissy” character and put an end to the notion that feminine qualities in a boy are a negative trait. In the film, our protagonist learns that sexuality is only a small aspect of who you are and that it doesn’t define you…

“Our mission is to have audiences walking away with a sense of optimism and hope that inspires change in today’s social climate. With the right mindset and by creating a meaningful dialogue, it can get better. While society has improved and made significant strides, there are still deeply closeted teens that could benefit from a film like this, as could their straight counterparts. Help us be an ally for human rights by supporting the next great teen comedy!”

A self-described ‘funny movie about a very unfunny subject’, the crowdfunding campaign is open now, so take a look at the trailer below, and if you want to help out, head over to Indiegogo. [Read more…]

Mark Hamill Says ‘Of Course’ Luke Skywalker Might Be Gay

March 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

luke-skywalkerWhile there’s been a lot of comment about whether Finn and Poe Dameron might end up being the Star Wars movie’s first gay couple (based on their bromance in The Force Awakens), it’s not really been mentioned that the franchise could have had a gay character long before that – Luke Skywalker. Although he was shown having some interest in Leia, before he found out she was his sister, he never really had a romance of his own, and seemed as interested in men as women.

So is he gay? Well, The Sun asked the actor who plays him, Mark Hamill, that question in the light of the fact JJ Abrams has recently said he expects there to be LGBT characters in the films in the future. Hamill says, “But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school… I’m afraid to come out’.

“They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

It’s a great way to look at it, as Luke was always designed to be an archetypal hero – someone who comes from a humble background and must work to find their destiny – and who the audience is supposed to relate to. In the past in the movies, relating to him would automatically mean he was straight, but it’s good we’ve moved past that.

However, it’s easily possible Luke isn’t completely gay, as many believe he is Rey’s father, and in books and comics he was given a wife and child (although the new movies are mainly ignoring those). We’ll have to wait and see if his sexuality is further defined in future movies.

21 Jump Street/Men in Black Crossover Gets Director James Bobin

March 6, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-bobin

When Channing Tatum came up with the idea for a crossover between 21 Jump Street and Men In Black, it seemed like the sort of crazy thing where a studio would do some work on it, just to keep the star happy. However, it appears Sony is taking it very seriously, as Variety reports that Muppets and Flight On The Conchords director James Bobin is in talks to helm the movie.

While Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both expected to be involved, don’t expect to see Tommy Lee Jones or Will Smith, as the makers are apparently looking for ‘younger, fresher faces’ to put on the black suits and help keep the fact aliens are living amongst us a secret. There’s no other info than that, and we’ll have to wait and see how Schmidt and Jenko get caught up in alien shenanigans, and whether the movie will see them going undercover to deal with some sort of sci-fi nasty.

Expect to hear more info soo though, as Sony is hoping to shoot the movie this summer. It appears that once they’ve tied down Bobin, they’ll be looking for actors to play the new Men (and possibly Women) in Black. Who knows, perhaps after the lacklustre Men In Black 3, this could be a good way to revive the franchise.
