New Spy Trailer – Don’t mess with secret agent Melissa McCarthy

March 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Spy-Gold-PosterSpy got great notices when it premiered at SXSW, suggesting this will be another big success for Melissa McCarthy following Bridesmaids and The Heat. Now a new trailer and golden poster have arrived for the movie, give the whole thing a bit of a Bond feel.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.’

It’ll be in UK cinemas on June 5th, but before then take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Disney Plans Mulan Live-Action Movie

March 31, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mulan-slideDisney seems determine to work its way through every animated movie it’s ever made and turn it into a live-action movie. They’ve done it with the likes of Cinderella, Alice In Wonderland and Maleficent, and they’ve got The Jungle Book, Dumbo and Beauty & The Beast in the works.

And now they’ve added another, as THR reports that Disney has just picked up a script about Mulan by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, which centres on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in Disney’s 1998 animated film.

There aren’t any more details than that, but the fact that Disney picked up a spec script suggests it won’t be straight adaptation of the 1998 movie, and may stay closer to the original legends.

It’s a smart move on Disney’s part, as all of Hollywood is chasing after the money that can be made in the fast-growing Chinese market, and with Mulan it has something with in-built Asian appear but it also known to Western audiences too.

Mulan is about a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to join the military in the place of her conscripted elderly father. Pretending to be a man she becomes a hero, but inevitably her secret can’t stay hidden forever.

Spectre Teaser Trailer – James Bond’s secrets are going to be revealed

March 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

SPECTRE-Teaser-Poster-slideAfter the gargantuan success of Skyfall there is huge amounts on anticipation for Spectre, and from this teaser trailer it looks like they’ll be keeping the style and feel of that movie. It’s also clear that unlike many previous Bond adventures, it will genuinely continue the story rather than being a completely standalone adventure.

However it’s also keen to show it’s not completely dispensing with what has gone before, most notably with the re-emergence of the evil SPECTRE organisation, which Bond went up against in several 60s and 70s movies, but which copyright issue have kept out of the official movie series since then.

What this trailer continues to tease though is whether Christoph Waltz’s baddie, Oberhauser, is really the infamous Blofeld (although the way it’s set up suggests he is). There’s also a hint at some 007 secrets, which appear to have something to do with his family.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.’

Spectre is set for global release on November 6, 2015. [Read more…]

Will Star Wars’ First LGBT Character Appear in Rogue One?

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-lords-of-the-sithThere was a lot of interest a few weeks ago when it was revealed that the Star Wars universe was getting its very first officially LGBT characters – or at least the first one it was going to openly admit wasn’t straight (apparently, despite there being thousands of planets with aliens on them, they’re all straight, except one person).

Now though a rumour has surfaced – and it has to be said that it is very much a rumour at this stage – that the new, lesbian character Moff Mors won’t just appear in Paul S. Kemp‘s novel Star Wars: Lords of the Sith, but will also pop up int the planned Star Wars movie spin-off, Rogue One, which Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards is set to direct.

Cinelinx has the rumour, and as this stands it’s difficult to know whether they have got the inside scoop or not. In the last few weeks they’ve dropped a few Star Wars titbits, but so far they’re all unconfirmed.

Moff Mors has been described as ‘an Imperial who has made some very serious mistakes but she is an incredibly capable leader and spends much of the book working hard to prevent absolute failure. She also happens to be a lesbian.’

It would be great if she does appear in Rogue One, and that if she does they acknowledge her sexuality. However I have a horrible feeling that Moff Mors won’t be in Rogue One at all, and that like Star Trek, properly LGBT characters will be left to the expanded universe where only a few will know they even exist.

If you do want to get to know her, Moff will definitely be in Paul S. Kemp‘s upcoming novel Star Wars: Lords of the Sith, which is due to be published soon. Whether she also appears in the Rogue One movie when it arrives December 2016 is yet to be seen.

It’s believed that Rogue One will be set between Episodes III and IV, and will follow a group of bounty hunters/pirates who set out to steal the plans to the Death Star.

Southpaw Trailer – Jake Gyllenhaal gets ripped to play a boxer

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

southpaw-movie-pic1Believe it or not, this ought to have been Eminem. When Southpaw was originally put into development the rapper was going to star, with the story being a metaphorical take on his life. However after Eminem left the film lived on and now it’s Jake Gyllenhaal who’s got completely ripped to play a boxer in the movie.

Eminem is still involved though as a producer and it was through his Youtube that the trailer was released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and starring Academy Award® nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (NIGHTCRAWLER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral. His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos. Relentless and utterly committed to a fighter that thinks as much as he throws punches, Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it. Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on as he learns that, sometimes, your greatest opponent can be yourself.’

The film hits cinemas in July. [Read more…]

Ryan Reynolds Gets Inspired By Burt Reynolds In The First Official Deadpool Pic

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

deadpool-pic1It’s a year until Deadpool hits cinemas, but to prove that after years of Ryan Reynolds saying it was still going to happen, that this time it really will, the first pic of the actor in his costume for the movie has been released, which you can take a look at above.

We’ve also got a brief synopsis: ‘Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.’

If the image seems oddly familiar to you it’s because it was inspired by Burt Reynolds infamous nude Playgirl spread, which saw him similar posed on a bearskin, but with fewer clothes.

The movie hits UK cinemas February 2016.

Matthew McConaughey Up For The Billionaire’s Vinegar

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-mcconaughey-magic-mikeIn the last few years Matthew McConaughey has certainly moved away from the lazy rom-coms that were in danger of turning career into a bit of joke. Indeed it surprised many when he put in a performance in Dallas Buyers Club that won him an Oscar, as they’d forgotten he’s actually really good when he puts his mind to it.

Now he’s set his sights on wine, or at least a movie about a bottle of Bordeaux. He’s attached to a movie version of Benjamin Wallace’s book The Billionaire’s Vinegar, according to Deadline, which is based around the true story of an extremely expensive bottle of wine that’s believed to have once belonged to Thomas Jefferson.

The story ‘starts in 1985, when a Forbes family member paid $156,000 at auction for a bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafite Bordeaux, which Christie’s of London billed as part of a Jefferson cache discovered in France. The wine was supplied by Hardy Rodenstock, a music manager-turned-wine dealer who somehow unearthed several bottles of old wine. After paying $500,000 for the Jefferson bottles, billionaire Bill Koch paid twice that for an investigation to confirm their origins and then sued Rodenstock. The title comes from the peculiar fact that collectors spend tons of money for wine they will never drink or even open.’

Indeed much of the tale is based around the odd preoccupations and interests of those who have too much money, and how prestige around owning certain objects can become of vital importance – far outstripping the intrinsic value of the objects themselves.

Michael Brandt and Derek Haas are behind the script, but it doesn’t appear a director is attached as yet.

Ben Mendelsohn Rumoured For Star Wars Rogue One

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ben-MendelsohnDisney/Lucasfilm may have only announced the title of their Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One, a couple of weeks ago, but with a December 2016 release date already set there’s no time to waste as with tonnes of special effects needed, they know they need to start filming fairly soon.

Felicity Jones has already been cast, and now Deadline reports that Dark Knight Rises and Animal Kingdom’s Ben Mendelsohn may join her. Unsurprisingly there are no details on who he’ll play.

Indeed no official plot details have been released at all, although rumours suggest it will be about a groups of bounty hunters or pirates who steal the plans to the Death Star, and that it will therefore be set between Episodes III and IV (and may involve a young Han Solo). Mendelsohn would seem perfect for the type of rough, tough character who’d be sent on such a mission.

Gareth Edwards will direct from a script by Chris Weitz (with an earlier draft by Gary Whitta). The movie will shoot this summer in the UK.

Amy Adams & Jake Gyllenhaal May Be Nocturnal Animals For A Single Man’s Tom Ford

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-fordGay Fashion designer Tom Ford had great critical success when he turned director for 2009’s A Single Man, but it’s only now that he’s plotting his second feature, Nocturnal Animals, with Variety reporting that he’s got Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal in talks to star.

The movie is ‘Based on the novel by Austin Wright titled “Tony and Susan,” the plot is described as a story inside a story, with the first part following a woman named Susan who receives a book manuscript from her ex-husband, a man whom she left 20 years earlier, asking for her opinion.

‘The second element follows the actual manuscript, called “Nocturnal Animals,” which revolves around a man whose family vacation turns violent and deadly. It also continues to follow the story of Susan, who finds herself recalling her first marriage and confronting some dark truths about herself.’

Ford is set to write and direct, and while it’s early day in negotiations, it appears it’s Adams and Gyllenhaal who have been pushing to be cast, so there’s an extremely good chance they will sign on the dotted line.

It’s not clear when it will shoot.

Will Ferrell Defends Anti-Gay Jokes In His New Movie Get Hard

March 25, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Get-Hard-Poster-slideWhile conservatives love to heap scorn on Hollywood, seeing it as a bunch of gay-loving liberals, it’s still a fact that that Tinsel Town likes to make cheap, anti-gay jokes whenever it can, and doesn’t see much wrong with it (probably because the audience still laughs).

Numerous people have commented on such jokes in Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart’s new movie, Get Hard, in which Ferrell’s character is wrongly convicted of tax evasion and sent to jail, and so enlists the help of his black friend to prepare him for prison life. As you can probably guess that leaves plenty of room for ‘don’t drop the soap in the showers’ type jokes, with Will’s character utterly paranoid he’s going to get raped by another man. It caused Variety to comment that the film contains “some of the ugliest gay-panic humor to befoul a studio release in recent memory.”

However Ferrell himself isn’t offering any apologies for what some are suggesting are both homopphobic and racist undertones to the movie, telling AP, “Any time you’re going to do an R-rated comedy, you’re going to offend someone. But that’s kind of what we do. We provoke. We prod. We also show a mirror to what’s already existing out there. We’re playing fictitious characters who are articulating some of the attitudes and misconceptions that already exist.”

That sounds like a whole lot of rationalisation to me, to excuse some extremely cheap jokes.

Ferell’s collaborator and fellow Get Hard producer Adam McKay adds, “Any individual going to maximum security prison would be afraid of violence and sexual assault. To equate that with homosexuality is ridiculous.”

While technically correct, it is completely disingenuous as the fact is that most jokes about prison rape aren’t based around the fear of sexual violence, they’re predicated on the idea that being the bottom in anal sex is the ultimate in emasculation. Indeed the jokes rarely focus on the rape part – it is the idea of a penis up the ass that is ‘funny’, not the fact that it has been forced on them. Indeed there’s also an edge of mysogyny, as it’s the fact they are being made the ‘woman’ in sex that is often presented as the central fear, and apparently a truly hilarious idea.

To be honest, prison rape jokes are old, lazy and you would have hoped Hollywood would have grown past them, or at least found more mature ways to deal with a genuinely serious problem in jails. Instead they use jokes that, whatever they claim, rely on outdated gay sterotypes, not on the fear of sexual violence as McKay suggests. Sure Get Hard is a comedy, but that doesn’t mean it has to be ugly.
