Spectre Teaser Trailer – James Bond’s secrets are going to be revealed

March 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

SPECTRE-Teaser-Poster-slideAfter the gargantuan success of Skyfall there is huge amounts on anticipation for Spectre, and from this teaser trailer it looks like they’ll be keeping the style and feel of that movie. It’s also clear that unlike many previous Bond adventures, it will genuinely continue the story rather than being a completely standalone adventure.

However it’s also keen to show it’s not completely dispensing with what has gone before, most notably with the re-emergence of the evil SPECTRE organisation, which Bond went up against in several 60s and 70s movies, but which copyright issue have kept out of the official movie series since then.

What this trailer continues to tease though is whether Christoph Waltz’s baddie, Oberhauser, is really the infamous Blofeld (although the way it’s set up suggests he is). There’s also a hint at some 007 secrets, which appear to have something to do with his family.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.’

Spectre is set for global release on November 6, 2015. [Read more…]

Argo Wins The Top Prize At The BAFTAs, With Les Mis & Skyfall Also Doing Well

February 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

argo-posterIt’s a strange situation where the director who’s sweeping most of the awards ceremonies isn’t even nominated for the Oscar, but that’s the situation Ben Affleck is in. He’s added the BAFTA Best Director Award for Argo to the Golden Globe, DGA and various other gongs he’s won, even if he can only hope his movie will win Best Picture at next week’s Oscars.

Argo also picked up Best Film, but it wasn’t a clean sweep for the film, as Les Miserables actually won the most awards, including Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway), Best Production Design, Best Sound and Best Make-Up.

Skyfall could also celebrate, winning Best British Film and Best Original music. In the acting categories there was a bit of variety in the films honoured, with Hathaway joined by Daniel Day Lewis for Lincoln, Emmanuelle Riva for Amour and Christoph Waltz and Django Unchained.

BAFTA Nominations Announced – Lincoln gets 10 nods but there’s not too much gay interest

January 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lincoln-poster1It’s BAFTA nominations day and they’ve now been announced with Lincoln leading the way with ten nominations. However Les Misérables and Life of Pi are no slouches, getting nine noms categories, while perhaps the surprisingly box office titan Skyfall has eight nominations. Argo has seven nominations and Anna Karenina has six, while Django Unchained and Zero Dark Thirty get five times.

Lincoln’s impressive haul includes Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated for Leading Actor, Tommy Lee Jones is nominated for Supporting Actor and Sally Field is nominated for Supporting Actress.

Unfortunately there’s not a  massive amount of gay interest in the list, although gay writer Tony Kushner is nominated for his Lincoln screenplay. We could also include Javier Bardem’s potentially bisexual role as the villain in Skyfall, but as his character’s sexuality isn’t identified, he can’t really be classed as LGBT.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which includes a gay subplot, is included in the Outstanding British film category.

The EE British Academy Film Awards take place on Sunday 10 February at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The ceremony will be hosted by Stephen Fry and will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD, preceded by a red carpet show on BBC Three.

Here are all the nominations:

Skyfall Becomes The UK’s First £100 Million Grossing Movie

December 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Skyfall-PosterA lot of people thought it would many years before a filmed gross £100 million at the UK box office, and just a few months ago if you’d said the one to do it would be a Bond movie, most people would have simply laughed at you. However Skyfall has done just that, with Sony & MGM revealing that the Sam Mendes directed movie has now taken £100,460,679 in the UK and Ireland, becoming the first film to ever pass that milestone.

It comes at the same time as the film has crossed $1 billion worldwide, joining a select band of less that 15 movies to ever reach that level (although it is 2012’s third film to do so after Avengers and Dark Knight Rises).

Skyfall’s UK gross of course means it’s now the highest grossing film ever in Britain, overtaking Avatar’s $94 million. The previous highest grossing Bond outing was Casino Royale, which took £55 million. As Skyfall isn’t far off doubling that, it really is an astonishing achievement.

Hobbit Stays Atop The US Box Office, With New Movies Struggling

December 24, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Hobbit-poster-1The weekend before Christmas is often fairly quiet, but this year a slew of new movies were released, hoping to line themselves up for the festive period (when they’ll be joined by the likes of Les Miserables and Django Unchained). However none of the new entries could beat the Hobbit, which itself isn’t holding up as well as many had hoped.

It dropped 56% from its first weekend, adding $36.7 million to take its total to $149.9 million. While by no means a disaster (and it’s still doing good business internationally), it not as much as many had expected and significantly lower than the second and third Lord Of The Rings movies had made at this stage.

The Tom Cruise starrer Jack Reacher took $15.6 million to take second spot on the chart, lower than most of the star’s movies, but about what many had expected, especially for the weekend it was release. In third place is Judd Apatow’s This Is 40, which took $12 million to place fourth. Again it could be worse, but many had hoped for more from the sort-of Knocked Up sequel.

Barbra Streisand’s first starring role since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces, The Guilt Trip, landed with a thud taking $5.3 million to place sixth, despite the presence of Seth Rogen. Middling to bad reviews certainly didn’t help. The 3D re-release of Monster’s Inc. took seventh spot with $5 million, suggesting interest in 3D versions of Disney movies is waning.

The final new nationwide release, Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away, placed outside the top 10 at number 11, but it’s difficult to judge exactly how well it did, due to the fact that it only played on 840 screens and had just two showing a day. That means the screenings were fairly well attended, but it’s difficult to judge it against other movies as it was screened in a different way. We’ll be able to tell more in the next few weeks whether the film – which is partway between narrative and concert movie – will be a success.

Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty also did well in its opening very limited release, taking $410,000 on just five screens, suggesting it will do very well as it expands onto more screens.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 21st-23rd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $36.7 $149.8

Hobbit Takes December US Box Office Record With $84m

December 17, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Hobbit-poster-1There was no doubt that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey would top US the box office in its first weekend of release. The only real question was how big it would be. The film has taken $84.7 million in its first three days, which is a record for a December weekend, beating out the opening of I Am Legend, which took $77.2 million back in 2007.

Despite this, some are still seeing The Hobbit as an underperformer, simply because many thought it should have cracked $100 million. However December is an unusual month as while most of the year you have to get what you can in the first few days and then hope the drop off is slow, the festive season tends to give movies longer legs than they’d usually have, and so The Hobbit is likely to continue to find audiences through the New Year, especially as it’s getting strong word of mouth.

As for whether the higher frame rate screenings have made a difference, Warner hasn’t released a breakdown, although 49% of tickets were sold across all the 3D playdates, and IMAX has reported a significantly higher per screen average for venues showing the movie at 48fps. Anecdotal evidence suggests there’s still confusion over the format, and that some people are being put off by bad notices given to HFR and are assuming all screenings are in that format, while others apparently don’t realise HFR is also in 3D.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 14th-16th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $84.7 $84.7

Skyfall Rises Back To The Top Of The US Box Office

December 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The couple of weeks after Thanksgiving always tend to be dominated by holdovers at the US box office, but this year it’s been particularly light on new entries, seemingly because everyone is running scared of The Hobbit, which is expected to completely take over cinemas this coming weekend.

This has allowed Skyfall to rise back to the top of the US box office on its fifth weekend, taking $11.4 million over the three days. It’s not a huge amount to make it to the top of the chart, and indeed overall it’s been the third worst weekend at the boox office this year. However it’s good news for Skyfall, as no movie has toped the box office on its fifth weekend since 2010.

The only major new release tanked, with the Gerard Butler soccer themed rom-com Playing For Keeps taking just $6 million on its first three days.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of December 7th-9th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Skyfall $11.4 $261.6
2 Rise Of The Guardians $10.5 $61.9

Skyfall Becomes UK’s Highest Grossing Box Office Hit Ever

December 5, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Just a couple of months ago if you’d asked most people whether they thought the 23rd film in a 50 year old franchise wouldn’t just become the biggest James Bond movie ever, but also the highest grossing movie in UK film history, they would have given an emphatic ‘no’.

However that’s exactly what’s happened, as in just over a month Skyfall has taken £94,277,612 in the UK, overtaking Avatar’s lifetime gross £94,025,632. With the film still doing good business, it could well become the first movie to make £100 million just in Britain and Ireland.

In response to this fantastic news, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli commented, “We’re overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest grossing film of all time. We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, who have contributed to its success.”

It’s an astonishing achievement, and while the film is undoubtedly good, it’s tough to pinpoint exactly why everyone’s gone so 007 crazy. They undoubtedly have though, and it’s great good to have a British born movie on top of the UK all time list.

Twilight Breaking Dawn 2 Tops US Box Office Again, With Killing Them Softly Bombing

December 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The post Thanksgiving box office is traditionally dominated by holdovers and that’s certainly true this year, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 topping the US chart again, taking another $17 million to hit $255 million in America so far. It also hit a franchise record internationally over the weekend, taking $447 million outside the US, ahead of Breaking Dawn Part 1’s total of $430.9 million.

New releases didn’t do very well at all, with Brad Pitt’s latest, Killing The Softly, only placing seventh on the chart with $7 million, way below what the distributors had hoped. Even worse, it’s getting terrible notices from audiences, suggesting it will quickly disappear with trace.

The only other new entry is the horror flick The Collection, which took $3.4 million to place 10th on the chart.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 30th-December 2nd.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $17.4 $255

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Rips Into US Box Office

November 19, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It might not have hit the $150-$160 million opening some were predicting, but The Twilight Saga – Breaking Dawn Part 2 was certainly no slouch at the US box office, taking $141 million, which is the eighth biggest first three-day take ever. It was slightly behind New Moon, which still holds the franchise record with $142 million, but slightly ahead of Breaking Dawn Part 1.

Globally the movie made $340 million over the weekend, which ain’t a bad total at all. It’s the franchise’s best opening internationally.

While there were no other brand new openers in the US top 10, Lincoln made its first appearance after its strong opening on just 11 screens last week. After expanding onto 1700 screen, it took $21 million to place third on the chart. It’s a very healthy take considering the subject matter and period setting – and the fact it doesn’t promise vast amounts of action.

Take a look below for the US box office Top 10 for the weekend of November 16th-18th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 $141.3 $141.3
2 Skyfall $41.5 $161.3
3 Lincoln $21.0 $22.4
4 Wreck-It Ralph $18.3 $121.4
5 Flight $8.6 $61.3

7 Taken 2 $2.1 $134.6
