Birdman Takes Best Picture At The Oscars, With Only One Win For Imitation Game

February 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harris-oscars-underwearIn the last few weeks many thought Boyhood had overtaken Birdman as this year’s Best Picture Oscar frontrunner, but in the end it was the latter that took to the podium at the end of ceremony, with Alejandro González Iñárritu also winning Best Director.

However everything didn’t go to Birdman, as while it took two other prizes, it actually tied for most wins with The Grand Budapest Hotel, which took Best Makeup, Best Production Design, Best Costume and Best Original Score.

On the acting front, while a few months ago many critics had already pretty much given the award to Michael Keaton for Best Actor, it was actually Eddie Redmayne who won for The Theory Of Everything. Julianne Moore won Best Actress for Still Alice, while both supporting acting awards went to the frontrunners, Patricia Arquette for Boyhood and J.K. Simmons for Whiplash.

The ceremony itself was ok, although Neil Patrick Harris struggled after a rousing opening, largely due to weak writing. It’s a shame as NPH himself was good, but he had little to work with in a job that’s thankless at the best of times.

It was also up to NPH to largely hold the fort for the gays, as while we normally make a strong showing, amongst the nominees it was only The Imitation Game that had any chance of winning. Many had thought that despite eight noms it wouldn’t win anything, but it did manage to pick up Best Adapted Screenplay for Graham Moore. The writer gave what was probably the most moving speech of the evening, saying “I tried to commit suicide at 16 and now I’m standing here. I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. You do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage please pass the same message along.”

Oh and if you’re wondering why NPH is in his undies in the pic above, it’s not because the show was going so badly he decided to try stripping, he was re-enacting a scene from Birdman – and looking fine while doing it.

Take a look below for the full list of Oscar winners. [Read more…]

Gay Art Porn Goes Crazy When Colby Keller Does New York With Cockyboys & A Fashion Designer

February 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

colby-does-new-yorkHave you ever watched gay porn but wished that it had more pretensions to art and looked a little like Sesame street had gone hardcore? Well then, you’re just like 99.9% of the rest of the rest of us, and your prayers have been answered.

As some of you will know, porn star/artist Colby Keller is currently in the middle of his Colby Does America project, where he’s travelling to each of the 50 US states and filming a sexual scene in each of them with the guys he’s been in contact with from there. Now it’s time for the New York chapter, which is far more insane than you might have expected.

The short film sees Keller teaming up with the Cockyboys (who Colby has previously done hardcore scenes with) and a fashion designer called BCALLA – who’s work has been embraced by the likes of Lady Gaga and Azealia Banks – for a neon explosion of penises, blow jobs nudity and even moments where it looks like Elmo is being the top in anal sex.

There are some very hoy guys involved, including Tayte Hanson, Levi Karter, Liam Riley, Ricky Roman and Levi Michaels, along with Keller and Love Bailey.

Colby Comments, “Sex is a part of everybody’s life. And we’re all here because of sex at the very least. So why not make it a part of fashion and art and all those other ways we like to express ourselves? I mean, there’s a lot of shame around sex, particularly when it gets graphic when it actually is sex. And there shouldn’t be. So this is kind of a way to break that barrier down which I think is a good thing.”

Unfortunately it’s all a bit too rude for us to be able to post here, but if you want to take a look, you can watch the film over at TheSword. Have fun – porn may never look the same to you again.

Zachary Quinto Talks About Why Gay A-list Stars Don’t Come Out (& His Nude Girls Scene)

February 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

zachary-quintoWhile an increasing number of American actors have come out in the last few years, none of them have been people who are at the top of the a-list (or who have reached that post-coming out). That’s not because no extremely famous people are gay, just that none of them have wanted to reveal their sexuality.

Now Zachary Quinto has been talking about just this, telling Huffpo Live, “I guess it’s just a matter of what people are willing to sacrifice for what they consider success. For me, it’s like you can’t have one without the other.”

He suggests that early in his career it was something he thought about a lot – wondering if he could achieve success in acting as an openly gay man. “I felt clear with who I was,” he says, “but I couldn’t reconcile it with a career. I didn’t think it was possible.” However he has since discovered that it is.

And with upcoming roles in Girls and the mini-series The Slap, Quinto is certainly busy and has been on the interview circuit, including on The Late Show With Seth Meyers, where he suggests his Girls guest spot will be rather revealing.

He says, “You will see a lot of me on Girls. I bared a lot for that experience.”

That’s not too surprising as Lena Dunham has previously joked of getting him involved, “I mean, it’s Girls, so you can assume what you will. I also want to see him naked—that’s all you need to know for now.”

We’ll have to wait and see just how much Quinto we get to see! [Read more…]

Jason Momoa Gets Out His Trident In The First Image Of Him As Aquaman

February 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jason-momoa-aquamanWhile there was initially uncertainly whether Jason Momoa’s Aquaman would appear in Batman Vs. Superman, I think we can take this as conclusive evidence that he will, before he gets his own spin-off film and an appearance in Justice League.

Indeed the first image of him in costume above suggests he’s going to have a major role in this, bring the Justice League together. Although it could also refer to the Seven Seas, with Aquaman being the only one true king of them.

We’ll first see Momoa as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March of 2016 (which is likely to be little more than a cameo), then he’ll appear in Justice League Part One in November 2017, an Aquaman movie on July 27, 2018, and then Justice League Part Two in June 2019.

Here’s how director Zack Snyder revealed the pic.

Sidney & Friends: Kenya’s Hidden Transgender and Intersex Community Documentary Seeks Funding

February 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

sidney-and-friendsThe challenges for LGBT people around the world can be very different and yet often share common themes. While there’s been unprecedented attention played to the transsexual community in the west in the past year or so, as well as converage of increasingly anti-gay attitudes in parts of Africa – what is it like to be transgender and/or intersex in Kenya?

That’s what Scottish filmmaker Tristan MG Aitchison’s Sidney & Friends accidentally set out to explore in Sidney & Friends, focussing on interviews with six members of the intersex and transgender community of Nairobi. While in western countries, many of the problems the trans* community faces involve dealing with intolerant elements of society, in Africa the issue is often that people don’t even know they exist.

The guerrilla documentary has already been filmed – for the astonishingly small amount of around £700 – but now it’s seeking £9,900 of post-production funding through Kickstarter, which will pay for things such as the original score, sound editing and final mix.

Aitchison told SoSoGay, “I didn’t set out to make this film when I travelled to Kenya in 2013, but by chance, I met someone… Guillit, a transboy who wanted to be heard… I was welcomed into the small community where other filmmakers and journalists had been refused access…

“Some interviews were incredibly difficult. Our contributors have suffered traumatic life events and there were a number of times I had chills at what I was being told. Sidney recalls one occasion he was being beaten by a group with clubs and sticks while his mother just stood and watched.

“He also told me about an incident where he was beaten, stripped, and left for dead in the street by a gang. A kind doctor paid for a motorcycle taxi to take him home. When the driver dropped him off, Sidney’s father turned to the driver and said, ‘If she is not dead, take her away, because I have already started digging her grave.’”

Take a look at the video below and then head over to Kickstarter to find out more and pledge some cash. [Read more…]

Neill Blomkamp Will Helm A New Alien Movie With Ridley Scott Producing

February 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neill-blomkampFor a long time it’s been known that Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has had a concept for an Alien movie, and in the last few weeks there have bee rumours that Fox might be ready to team with him to make it a reality. Now it turns out those rumours are true, as both Blomkamp (via Instagram) and Variety report he’s set to take on the xenomorph with Ridley Scott producing.

This won’t be Prometheus 2 though, which Ridley is still developing.

Blomkamp’s original concept which he’s mention previously involved Ellen Ripley, but in interviews several months ago Neill suggested that idea was probably dead. It’s not known whether that plan has been resurrected or whether Sigourney Weaver is attached to the film in any way.

It’s not clear where in the Alien timeline Blomkamp’s movie will fit, although insiders say it’ll take place years after Prometheus. For Alien: Resurrection they had to clone Ripley, but it’s possible Blomkamp’s movie will be set before then.

There is one good sign for Weaver’s involvement as she has a relationship with the director, having just worked with him on the upcoming Chappie. [Read more…]

Kristen Bell Joins Melissa McCarthy & Peter Dinklage In Michelle Darnell

February 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kristen-bellKristen Bell is always a good addition to a cast (it’s surprising she doesn’t get more roles in major movies), and the people behind Michelle Darnell seem to have realised that, as Variety reports that she’s joined Melissa McCarthy and Peter Dinklage in Michelle Darnell.

McCarthy also co-wrote she script alongside Steve Mallory and her hubby Ben Falcone (who will also direct), which ‘follows a titan of industry who is sent to prison after she’s caught for insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America’s latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.’

Bell has signed on to play Darnell’s former assistant, who plays a major role in the tale. Dinklage is the main antagonist.

The film will shoot this summer for an release April 2016.

Will Smith Will Be A Wrongly Convicted Killer In Bounty

February 19, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

will-smithAfter a bit of a break (he’s only had one proper leading role since 2008), Will Smith is coming back with a vengeance. Focus hits cinemas in a few weeks time, he’s got Concussion later this year and Suicide Squad will arrive next year. Now he’s adding another as Variety reports that he’ll take the lead in Bounty.

Paramount Pictures has just picked up writer Sascha Penn’s spec script for Smith to star in, which is about a man (Smith) who is wrongly convicted of murder. He then breaks out of prison to try and clear his name. However he won’t be allowed to this without interruption, as his supposed victim’s widow offers a $10 million bounty to get him, dead or alive.

It’s sounds a bit like The Fugitive on steroids.

No director is attached at the moment, and there’s no info on when it might arrive in cinemas.

Out There Trailer – Inside the world of gay farmers across the US

February 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

out-thereFarming isn’t the sort of career that you normally associate with queer people – although coming from a farming family myself and knowing a few gay farmers, I can personally attest that there are more of them around than you probably thought.

Out There takes a look at queer farmers across the US, with the documentary examining their lives and work. As Towleroad points out the film is touring the Mid-West and West Coast, from Milwaukee to Seattle, during February and March 2015.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Out Here is a full-length documentary film created by the Queer Farmer Film Project. Completed after 4 years in production, it looks at the experiences of queer farmers across the country and asks – what does it mean to be a queer farmer, is agriculture a safe space for queer people, and what are the relationships between food production and queerness? It is the filmmaker’s dream that this project will give voice and visibility to queer people in agriculture and inspire a flagrant national discussion about gender and sexuality as they are related to our food system.’

You can take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Fulboy Teaser Trailer – Inside the homoerotic male gaze in the soccer-based film

February 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

fulboyIt may only be a minute long, but it’s enough time to make Fulboy look pretty sexy – and that’s without any actual sex, kissing or overtly erotic – just men playing football and getting changed (although you can play spot the testicle).

Fans of Marco Berger (Hawaii, Absent, Plan B) might not be surprised to hear he’s one of the film’s producers, as it has a similar aesthetic to some of his work.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘On the verge of achieving his dream career, Tomás allows his older brother Martín Farina an inside look at his life as a professional football player. Martín, never able to fulfill his own dream of playing football, steps into the world of Tomás and his teammates through the lens of his camera. However, the rest of the club has their own opinions – some viewing Martín as an intruder, as he exposes their most vulnerable moments, and their concerns for the future after the game has ended.

‘Fulboy offers an uncensored, confessional look at how the athletes behind the most popular sport in the world behave during their time off the field. At the same time, Fulboy reflexively interrogates Farina’s aesthetic choices and point-of-view – as well as the viewer’s gaze at the male form.’

TLA Releasing will release Fulboy later this year. [Read more…]
