X-Men Director Bryan Singer Reveals That ‘I’m Quite Bisexual’

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bryan-singer-out1For years we’ve thought that Bryan Singer was gay, but it turns out that was more a category of convenience for the director, as in an Out profile he says that actually he’s more bisexual.

He says that after first seeing his gay status in print for the first time (he never actually had a big ‘coming out’ moment), “I was like, Oh, OK. That was easy. I came out by osmosis.”

However when the magazine follows up by asking whether life is any different in Hollywood for a ‘gay director’, he’s ready to set the record straight. “I’m quite bisexual,” he says. “In the last five years, I’ve had two girlfriends — one for two years, one for eight months.”

That said, “In the end, it’s probably going to be a guy [he ends up with]. I emotionally lean towards male relationships, so I’m happy to say I’m gay, too, if it’s a one-syllable, easy answer.

“If you look at the Kinsey Report, human sexuality is so complex.

“And the reason I’ve never talked about it to the press — until now — is because sexuality is so complex. To have a real conversation about it, you really want to have the person you’re talking to in front of you.

“I’ve never felt the need to be declarative. My sexuality is not what is tearing me up inside.”

The interview took place before the sexual assault lawsuit against Singer erupted, and having backed out of all press for X-Men: Days Of Future Past he has decided not to add any extra comment to Out, beyond the strong denial he made last month.

In related news, Buzzfeed reports that in a previous lawsuit, Singer’s first accuser, Michael F. Egan, denied having ever been to Hawaii – the state he says many of the main abuses he complains of took place (which is important as the lawsuit was filed there due to an extension on the statute of limitations).

In his 2003 sexual abuse suit against Marc Collins-Rector, Chad Shackley and Brock Pierce (the men who owned the estates the events involving Singer are supposed to have taken place at) he was ‘Asked during the deposition whether he had taken any trips outside the continental United States, Egan replied, “Never had any trips outside the continental U.S., no.” Egan then responds to a question specifically clarifying that he had never traveled to Hawaii.’

Egan’s lawyer seems aware of this discrepancy, responding, “I’m not sure how he interpreted the continental United States. I’m not sure what he’s talking about specifically here.”

With Singer’s lawyer saying there’s is documentation proving Singer was in Canada at the time the allegations are supposed to have taken place, and Egan on the record saying he’d never been to Hawaii at that time, it’s becoming an increasingly tough case for the accuser to win. If it can’t be reliably proven both Egan and Singer even went to Hawaii in 1999, then it’s unlikely there’d be a legally permissible case to answer. [Read more…]

Glee’s Chris Colfer To Play Gay Writer Noel Coward, With Ian McKellen Starring Too

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

chris-colferIt’s going to be a gay old time on the set of Noel this summer, with Chris Colfer and Ian McKellen teaming up for a biopic of the legendary Noel Coward. Vanessa Redgrave and Jonathan Pryce will also star, according to Screen Daily.

The film will follow Coward’s early life and inspirations, which led him to become the famously flamboyant raconteur and writer behind plays like Blithe Spirit, Private Lives and Hayfever, scripts such as Brief Encounter and songs like Mad Dogs And Englishmen. He was also an actor, perhaps most famously playing Mr. Bridger in The Italian Job.

Coward was gay, although as with most people of his era (he lived from 1899 to 1973) this was never mentioned while he was alive, although it was obvious and even Noel himself once observed ‘There are still a few old ladies in Worthing who don’t know.’ He also encouraged his secretary to write a frank biography which was to be published after he died.

This will be set before all that, although are no exact details on what period of his life the movie will cover. Colfer takes the role of Coward (let’s hope he’s been practicing his posh English actor, as Noel had a very distinctive voice), but it’s now known who McKellen, Redgrave and Pryce will be.

Martin Sherman wrote the script, who has a good pedigree with gay-themed project, having written Bent. Joe Stephenson (Chicken) will direct.

Stephen Fry’s The Hippopotamus Getting A Film Adaptation Starring Roger Allam

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stephen-fry-the-hippopotamusIt’s been announced at Cannes that a movie version of Stephen Fry’s debut novel The Hippopotamus is coming together, with Roger Allam set to play the lead role, according to Variety.

Allam is most acclaimed as a stage actor who’s won three Olivier Awards (his take on Shakespeare’s Falstaff was lauded as one of the best in recent years), but has also appeared in the likes of V For Vendetta, The Queen, The Woman In Black and various UK TV shows.

Fry’s book was first published in 1994, and while it got a mixed reaction from critics it’s stayed popular with reader.

Allam will play ‘disgraced poet Ted Wallace, who is summoned to his friend’s country manor to investigate a series of unexplained miracles.’ In the novel, Ted’s godson has been ascribed healing powers, but its the uncovering of the Logan family’s back story and sexual proclivities that proves more interesting.

The movie will shoot in the UK this August.

Daniel Radcliffe & Zoe Kazan Get A What If Poster

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

What-If-posterIt’s taking a while to get some of Daniel Radcliffe’s indie efforts into cinemas. He shot a movie called The F Word back in autumn 2012, but we still haven’t seen it.

Now it’s been retitled What If, a poster has arrived and an August 1st, 2014 US release has been set. We’ve also been promised a trailer in a couple of weeks time.

Radcliffe plays Wallace, a young man who meets Chantry (Kazan) at a party where they hit it off. The problem is, Chantry has a long-term boyfriend, and the duo must navigate through a tenuous friendship (that’s the F word), while keeping their feelings at bay.

Take a look at the new poster above. (Oh, and this is the film where Radcliffe shot a naked beach scene, so hopefully we have that to look forward to).

Edgar Ramirez Replacing Gerard Butler In Point Break Remake

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Edgar-RamirezIn the last couple of months it seemed the Point Break remake was coming together well, but a few days ago a major spanner was thrown into the works when Gerard Butler bailed.

He had been due to take over Patrick Swayze’s role, but a scheduling conflict meant he was forced to step away.

Backers Alcon and director Ericson Core (Invincible) have moved quickly to replace him though as Variety reports that Egdar Ramirez (Carlos, Wrath Of The Titans) has stepped into the role.

He joins Luke Bracey, who will be Johnny Utah, a young FBI agent who goes undercover to infiltrate a crime syndicate who are involved in the world of international extreme sports. Ramirez will be Bodhi, who’s involved in the crimes and whose influence ends up with Utah questioning what side he should be on. Ray Winstone will also star.

Principal photography is set to begin early this summer.

Roberto Orci Confirmed To Direct Star Trek 3

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

roberto-orciA couple of month ago it was reported Roberto Orci – who co-wrote and produced the first two Star Trek films – was lobbying to replace JJ Abrams in the director’s chair for Star Trek 3.

Many thought the fact he’s never directed a feature-length film made him a longshot, but now Variety confirms that he will indeed be in the hot-seat for the third rebooted Starfleet adventure.

Unsurprisingly there are no plot details known yet, but most of the main cast, including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, are expected to return.

Roberto Orci co-wrote both of the previous films alongside Aliex Kurtzman. Now he and Kurtzman have split their longtime partnership, so Orci writing Star Trek 2 with John D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Kurtzman meanwhile is hoping to get his own major directing gig with the Spider-man spin-off Venom.

J.J. Abrams will still produce, although he’ll mainly be busy with Star Wars.

Ridley Scott Circling The Matt Damon Sci-fi, The Martian

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ridley-ScottLast month it was Matt Damon had attached himself to the sci-fi flick The Martian, but at the same time director Drew Goddard dropped out, due to his commitments to Sony’s Spider-man spin-off, The Sinister Six.

Now a replacement might have been found as THR reports that Ridley Scott is in talks to direct the 20th Century Fox movie.

Based on the self-published e-book by Andy Weir, The Martian ‘follows an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars and must figure out how to survive long enough to return to Earth.’

The movie has been described as a cross between Apollo 13 and Cast Away (they seem to be deliberately avoiding mentioning Gravity, as the premise is bound to make some people wonder whether this film will end up as Cuaron’s movie’s poor cousin).

It’s believed they’ll still work from Goddard’s screenplay. It’s not clear when it will shoot though.

Michael Fassbender In Talks For Derek Cianfrance’s Light Between Oceans

May 14, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michael-fassbender-gq-pic7-slideDerek Cianfrance’s last couple of movies have had Ryan Gosling in the lead (Place Between The Pines and Blue Valentine), but now he’s found a new leading man as TheWrap reports Michael Fassbender is in talks for The Light Between Oceans, which DreamWorks is backing.

The film will be based on the debut novel from M.L. Stedman, which takes place on a remote Australian island after World War I, where a lighthouse keeper and his wife face a moral dilemma when a dead man and a two-month-old infant wash up in a boat on shore.

It isn’t 100% clear when it will shoot, although it’s believed it may film in Australia. Rumours suggest that Fassbender may make this movie and then move onto Prometheus 2, although others suggest it’ll be Assassin’s Creed he shoots later this year instead.

Of course first he’s got X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

ErOddity(s) Extended Trailer – Things gets strange and very sexy in the gay short film selection

May 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Last week we posted a short teaser for ErOddity(s), which might have only been 30 seconds long but suggested this was gonna be a bit weird but very, very sexy. Now comes a longer trailer which confirms that and underlines the sexiness!

It’s described as being, ‘”A little bit odd… highly erotic.” In this collection of short, sexy tales, the lives of young men take unexpected turns when they encounter the strange and the supernatural.’

And be warned, as the trailer is a little bit NSFW, so be careful if your boss is around, or you’ll be answering question about why you’re watching twinks humping and being rather strange.

TLA Releasing should be bringing it out later this year. [Read more…]
