Bradley Cooper Takes On The Witness Protection Program With American Blood

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bradley-cooper
Bradley Cooper seems to have become slightly obsessed with movies with the word ‘American’ in the title. He’s just come off the extremely successful American Hustle, he’s been trying to put together American Sniper, and now THR reports he’s signed up American Blood.

The film is based on an upcoming crime novel Ben Sanders, which centers on Marshall Grade (Bradley Cooper), a former NYPD cop who became a mob informant and is now part of the witness protection program in New Mexico. Despite the fact he’s supposed to be trying to maintain his anonymity, he gets involved in a missing person’s case.

The hope is that this can become a franchise, as Sanders it already planning a series of novels based around the character. At the moment the American Blood book isn’t even finished, but the idea and partially complete manuscript was enough to spark the interest of Warner Bros and another rival studio, along with several TV production companies.

Andrew Sodroski has already been hired to write the screenplay adaptation, with Bradley Cooper, John Lesher, Adam Kassan, Brendan Deenan and Pouya Shabazian set to produce. It’s not known when it will shoot, but as the novel isn’t due out until 2015, it’s likely to be a while.

Cooper will next be heard as Rocket Raccoon in Guardians Of The Galaxy, although we’re presuming he’ll be lobbying to get the title changed to Americans Of The Galaxy.

Ghostbusters Star Harold Ramis Dies Aged 69

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

harold-ramisHarold Ramis, best known to many as Dr. Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters has died aged 69, it’s been revealed. The Chicago Tribune first reported the news, saying Ramis passed away as a result of complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rare disease that involves swelling of the blood vessels. He had been battling health issues for several years.

While he became a legend for co-writing and starring in Ghostbusters, Ramis saw just as much success behind the camera. After getting his start with the Second City improvisational group (which bred many of the big names of Saturday Night Live), he got his big break co-writing National Lampoon’s Animal House. He also helped write the likes of Caddyshack and Analyze This, as well as directing movies those films, along with hits such as National Lampoon’s Vacation, Groundhog Day, Multiplicity and Bedazzled. More recently he helmed several episodes of the US version of The Office.

He is survived by his wife, Erica, and three children.

Gay Film Festival Poster Featuring Two Men Kissing Banned After Being Deemed ‘Too Confronting’ For Brisbane

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brisbane-queer-film-festival-banned-image
I think we may have found a new word to add to the homophobic arsenal, as apparently gay imagery can be ‘too confronting’, even if it’s difficult to imagine that being said if exactly the same image featured a man and a women. Those were the words used by Brisbane Lifestyle Committee Chairman Krista Adams after Brisbane City Council deemed one of the adverts for the Brisbane Queer Film Festival unsuitable and banned it, according to couriermail.com.au.

She said, “We are mindful of the community’s views and believe that one of the three posters may be seen by many as too confronting. I have been advised that, in the meantime, an alternate billboard design will be used.”

The image in question, seen above, is a gay take on a classic image from the film From Here To Eternity, which features Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr kissing as waves crashed against them. Here that image has been replaced with two guys (and quite frankly I’ve never been so confronted in my life!).

Understandably, many took to Twitter to express their displeasure at the decision, which led the Council to announce a review would be undertaken by the Advertising Standards Board.

Yes, it’s definitely a sexy image, but it’s less explicit and in your face than many adverts featuring women in deliberately sexualised and objectified situations. And it’s particularly ironic seeing as it’s based on a picture of a man and a women that wasn’t even seen as ‘too confronting’ to be in Best Picture Oscar-winning movie in 1953.

This isn’t the first time Brisbane has raised controversy by banning a gay-themed ad. In 2011 a bus stop poster promoting safer sex was torn down by authorities, after organised lobbying by an anti-gay group led to 30 complaints. The poster featured two fully clothed men embracing, with one holding an unopened red condom packet. On that occasion the decision was reversed and the ads were put back up following a social media campaign. It’s unclear at the moment if that will happen this time too.

You can compare the image above with one of the classic From Here To Eternity pics below.

The Amazing Spider-man 2: Rise Of Electro Trailer – Take a new three-minute look at Andrew Garfield & Jamie Foxx

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sony is betting big on The Amazing Spider-man 2, hoping it’s going to be a huge superhero success. With an April 18th UK release set, it’s not long until we’ll get to see it, and to ensure our appetites are suitably whetted, a new, three-minute Rise Of Electro trailer has been released, which you can watch right here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

‘It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.’

The movie is due in UK cinemas this April, with a May 2nd US release set [Read more…]

The Sacrament Red Band Trailer – Take a look at the latest horror from Ti West

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ti West has quickly gained a great reputation in horror circles with the likes of The House Of The Devil, Cabin Fever 2 and The Innkeepers. Now he’s back with The Sacrament.

The film follows, ‘follows a group of journalists shooting a doc about a man’s attempt to locate his missing sister. They find her in a rural cult preparing for a mass suicide.’ Initially they think the cult seems like a nice, earthly paradise, but that assessment doesn’t last too long.

Now the red band trailer for the movie has arrived. The movie screened at last year’s London Film Festival and will be released in the US on VOD from May 1st and in cinemas from June 6th. No UK release date is currently set. [Read more…]

Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg Take On Console Wars

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

seth-rogenIt’s tough to seen how the rivalry between two companies will become a movie, but Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg obviously think they can find a way. Collider reports they’ve signed up to co-write and co-direct a movie based on the upcoming book, Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo And The Battle That Defined A Generation, by Blake Harris.

The non-fiction book takes a close look at the fight between Sega and Nintendo in the 1990s, when both companies were battling for console dominance. Their striving to be the best (and to undermine the other) led to the massive gaming industry we have today, where Nintendo is still a player, but Sega has fallen by the wayside, replaced by Sony and Microsoft.

The book follows the fight between the 16-bit consoles the SNES and the Sega Mega Drive, both of which helped turn video games from something most people only saw on arcade machines, into an essential part of every young person’s home.

Rogen may also star in the movie, but as yet he’s just set for writing and directing duties.

The Lego Movie Tops The US Box Office Again, With Pompeii Going Down In Flames

February 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lego-movie-poster2The success of The LEGO movie continues with the film topping to US box office for a third week, taking an impressive $31.4 million. That makes for a total of $183 million so far. After this success, it’s little surprise Warner is already moving forward with a sequel.

The LEGO Movie completely obliterated the new competition, neither of which could scare up a huge amount of interest. 3 Days To Kill was in second spot with $12.3 million. It could have been worse as the movie didn’t cost a huge amount to produce, but it’s not a great start for the Kevin Costner action flick.

Going into the weekend, some were wondering if Pompeii would top the chart, but in the end it fizzled rather than erupted as the big budget movie barely took $10 million. It’s far less than most disaster movies, but at least it was a little higher than other recent effects-heavy bombs, The Legend Of Hercules and I, Frankenstein.

Take a look below for the box office top 10 for the weekend of February 21st-23rd 2014.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 The LEGO Movie $31.4 $183.1
2 3 Days To Kill $12.3 $12.3
3 Pompeii $10.0 $10.0
4 Robocop $9.4 $43.6
5 The Monuments Men $8.1 $58.0
6 About Last Night $7.4 $38.1
7 Ride Along $4,6 $123.1
8 Frozen $4.3 $384.0
9 Endless Love $4,3 $20.1
10 Winter’s Tale $2.1 $11.2

Iris Prize LGBT Short Film Festival Launches New British Strand & Logo

February 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

iris-logo-britishThe Iris Prize, held every autumn in Cardiff, is a great showcase for LGBT short films from around the world. However this year they have announced plans for a new strand to celebrate the Best of British.

The new strand will screen up to 10 of the best short films produced by filmmakers in Britain over the past 24 months. The films will be judged by an independent British Jury who will present the winning film with the Iris Prize Best British Short Award.

“British films have always been well received at the Iris Prize Film Festival and we are delighted to be screening more British shorts this year. This new development will also allow Iris to have a closer relationship with more local film makers,” said Festival Chair Andrew Pierce.

“The Iris Prize has a well-established track record for celebrating international talent having presented the Prize to film makers from the US, Israel, Germany, Norway, Brazil and two from Australia. However as we grow there is an expectation for us to do more! This is what we are doing by launching the Best British Short Award!” he added.
