New Biopic Of Gay Beatles Manager Brian Epstein Planned, With The Rights To Use The Band’s Songs

October 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

brian-episteinWhile a lot of band fund their retirements by leasing out their music to anyone who’ll pay cash to use it, The Beatles have been very careful with which films they’ve allowed to use their music.

While the odd song has popped up and there was the musical Across The Universe, generally it’s been tough to get McCartney, Starr, and the estates of Harrison and Lennon to allow use of the original tunes. And when it comes the film actually about the Beatles, they’ve completely refused – which has caused issues for movies such as Backbeat and Nowhere Boy.

However now a new biopic of the band’s manager, Brian Epstein, is planned, and it’ll be the first film that’s won the right to use the Beatles’ actual music, according to Deadline.

This is the latest of a series of attempts to make a movie about Epstein. In 2009 a movie with a screenplay by Tony Gittelson foundered in 2009, while in April 2012 there were reports that Tom Hanks was producing a film about Epstein with Benedict Cumberbatch attached to star, but we haven’t heard anything about that since.

This new film has a script Tony-winning producer Vivek J. Tiwary (Green Day’s American Idiot, Mel Brooks’ The Producers), based on his own forthcoming graphic novel with art by Andrew C. Robinson and cartoonist Kyle Baker. Tiwary will also produce alongside Oscar-winner Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Milk).

Epstein signed the iconic band back in 1961. He initially had difficulty getting a label to take them, before he managed to launch them to international superstar status. While he’s best remembered for his relationship to the Liverpudlians, he also managed the likes of Cilla Black and Gerry & the Pacemakers.

Epstein was also a closeted homosexual, whose sexuality was completely concealed from the public, although it was an open secret amongst his friends and associates. It’s little surprise it was kept secret, as homosexuality was still illegal in the UK at the time. He’s also said to have had an ‘almost’ love affair with John Lennon, which was never consummated (at least that’s how Lennon put it). Epstein battled addictions with drugs and gambling, and tragically died of an accidental overdose of sleeping pills in 1967, just one month before homosexuality was decriminalised in England and Wales.

The current hope is to start shooting in 2014.

Has Edgar Wright Tweeted The First Ant-Man Set Photo?

October 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ant-man-possible
‘Now I’m back in LA, it’s high time to finish a little something I’ve been working on…’

That’s the Tweet and image Edgar Wright recently sent, and in his often enigmatic way, he’s now left the blogosphere to go mental about what he means.

The immediate assumption has been that this is from the set of Ant-Man, although with no cast announced and a release date that’s almost two years away, it seems a little early for this to be from the actual shoot. However Wright could well in LA to start working full-time on pre-production, and this could be either from test footage or possibly some sort of teaser that’ll be attached to one of the Marvel movies that comes before Ant-man.

At the moment it’s all speculation, and it could turn out it something else Wright has been working on!

Edgar Wright is directing Ant-Man from a screenplay he co-wrote with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block). No story details have been confirmed, but the director revealed in February that this will take a different approach to Dr. Hank Pym’s origin than was in the comics – although it will still presumably follow the doctor gaining the ability to shrink to minuscule size. It’s due out July 31st, 2015.

Chris Pine Gets Out His Weapon In The First Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Poster

October 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Normally when a major franchise is being rebooted, the studios try to remind us about every five minutes for about a year before it’s actually released. However Paramount has been a little quieter about Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Indeed it only got the Shadow Recruit part of its title recently (in fact as of writing, IMDB still lists it as Jack Ryan: Shadow One).

However now the hype if building and the first poster comes coincidently on the same day that Jack Ryan’s creator, Tom Clancy, died at the age of 66. We’ve also been promised a full trailer tomorrow.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In a story taking place prior to the original Jack Ryan stories, Ryan is a young stock broker working for a billionaire in Moscow before joining the CIA. When the billionaire he is advising frames him for a terrorist plot and kidnaps his wife, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, stop the plot, and save his wife.’

Chris Pine, Kenneth Branagh, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and Colm Feore star, with Branagh also directing. The film is out at Christmas.

Simon Kinberg To Rewrite Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four Reboot

Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four is slowly moving forward with the news that Simon Kinberg has been hired to rewrite the script, according to Variety. He joins a growing list, as Jeremy Slater, Michael Green, Seth Grahame-Smith and T.S. Nowlin have all worked on previous drafts.

However with reports that it’s pretty close to shooting, it’s likely Kinberg is only doing a polish, perhaps bringing it in line with Fox’s other superhero movies. He’s certainly well placed for that, having worked on X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Josh Trank will be directing the Fantastic Four remake, which is bringing the Marvel comics family a complete overhaul from the Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer from a few years ago. Created in 1961 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the group includes the scientist Mr. Fantastic, his wife the Invisible Girl, her brother the Human Torch and the Thing.

Sal Trailer – First Look At James Franco’s biopic of gay actor Sal Mineo

October 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

James Franco is back doing gay things. Actually, he did this gay thing quite a while ago, but Sal has taken a couple of years to get from principal photography to the point of release. However now the movie is coming, and the first trailer has arrived.

Franco’s film is a biopic of actor Sal Mineo, famed for his roles in the likes of Rebel Without A Cause, Giant and The Longest Day. While he did have some relationships with women, in the late 60s he became one of the first Hollywood actors to ever acknowledge he was gay. Tragically in 1976, while he was living in San Francisco playing a bisexual burglar in the stage comedy, P.S. Your Cat Is Dead, he was murdered in what is believed to be a robbery gone wrong (reports Mineo was trying to solicit his killer for sex are unfounded).

The film concentrates on his final day, when he wasn’t quite a famous as he once was, but has become comfortable with his sexuality and his abilities as an actor. Val Lauren plays Mineo, with Franco taking a supporting role as Milton Kaselas, the director of the play Sal was starring in before he died.

Sal will be available on iTunes and VOD in the US starting October 22nd, with a limited theatrical release from November 1st, beginning in Los Angeles.

You can also take a look at a new poster below. [Read more…]

Michelle Rodriguez Casually Confirms She’s Bisexual

October 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

michelle-rodriguezOver the past few years a lot of rumours have swirled around Michelle Rodriguez, with many convinced she was LGBT but hiding that fact. Indeed, some people got pretty angry about it. While it’s taken her a while, the Lost and Fast & Furious 6 actress has revealed that she is ‘B’, aka bisexual.

She tells EW about assumptions she’s a lesbian, “Eh, they’re not too far off,” she said. “I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too f–king curious to sit here and not try when I can. Men are intriguing. So are chicks.”

Rodriguez has previously been ambivalent about people’s interest in her sexuality, which she has often referred to as people’s obsession with what she does with her vagina. Many would say sexuality is a lot more than just what people do with their genitals, but that’s how Michelle has sometimes put it.

For example, she also told EW, “I don’t talk about what I do with my vagina, and they’re all intrigued. I’ve never walked the carpet with anyone, so they wonder: What does she do with her vagina? Plus, I play a butchy girl all the time, so they assume I’m a lesbo.”

Back in 2006, she was linked to her BloodRayne co-star, Kristianna Loken (who is out as a lesbian), and has also spoken about not wanting to be put in a box. However on a red carpet in 2011 she stated, “I’m not a lesbian….yeah. Michi likes sausage.”

It’s similar to Wentworth Miller, who denied, demurred, hinted and tried absolutely silence before finally coming out in August.

New The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer Debuts

October 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As we were promised, a new trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has arrived and it certainly looks pretty, showing of the visuals and action, as well as the return of old friends like Legolas and new character played by actors such as Evangeline Lily, Lee Pace and Luke Evans – the last two of which you can see in new banners above.

There’s also a few giant spider to look out for. But once again the dragon Smaug is only glimpsed in bits and pieces.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit”, by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventures of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

It hits cinemas on December 13th.

Shia LaBeouf Is Looking Intense (& Pretty Hot) In A New Charlie Countryman Poster

October 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Shia LaBeouf is one of those people who seems to divide opinion over whether he talented and good-looking or ugly and a douche. However he’s looking pretty good in this poster, where he’s tipped sideways and looking very intense.

Here’s the brief synopsis for the film, which was once titled The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman: ‘Traveling abroad, Charlie Countryman falls for Gabi, a Romanian beauty whose unreachable heart has its origins in Nigel, her violent, charismatic ex. As the darkness of Gabi’s past increasingly envelops him, Charlie resolves to win her heart, or die trying.’

Mads Mikkelsen, Rupert Grint, Melissa Leo and Til Schweiger also star, with Fredrik Bond making his feature directorial debut with the movie. It’s out in the US in November.
