James McAvoy Goes Pig Riding In A New Filth Poster

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

filth-quad-poster
There aren’t many movie posters that feature somebody riding a pig, but then Filth is looking like a pretty unusual movie, so perhaps it’s apt to have James McAvoy getting a bit porky in this new quad.

In the film, based on Irvine Welsh’s novel, scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell), Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector Toal. As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control. His past is slowly catching up with him, and a missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his sanity. The question is: can he keep his grip on reality long enough to disentangle himself from the filth?

The movie’s due out this September.

Sandra Bullock Floats In First Image From Alfono Cuaron’s Gravity

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gravity-preview-pic1
Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity is definitely one of the most intriguing movies of the year, largely as it mainly has just two cast members – Sandra Bullock and George Clooney – will be largely done with extremely long takes and much of the time will be Bullock & Clooney alone in space.

We got the first teaser trailer a few weeks ago, which concentrated on the disaster that strikes as space station, and now USA Today presents the first still image, which sees Sandra having a bit of a float, presumably before everything goes horribly wrong.

Here’s the official synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winners Sandra Bullock (“The Blind Side,” “The Proposal”) and George Clooney (“Up in the Air,” “Syriana”) star in “Gravity,” a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.  The film was directed by Oscar® nominee Alfonso Cuarón (“Children of Men”).

‘Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring.  But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes.  The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.  But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.’

It’ll be out later this year.

Stellan Skarsgard To Advise The King In Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stellan-skarsgardIt’s always worth adding Stellan Skargard to a movie, something Kenneth Branagh realised with Thor. He’s now planning to work with him again, as THR reports Stellan is in talks to join Branagh’s big-budget take on Cinderella, which he’s directing for Disney.

Assuming Skarsgard signs on the bottom line, he’ll be playing a grand duke who’s a senior adviser to the king. However, he has his own nefarious agenda, which doesn’t involve the Prince and Cinders living happily ever after.

Aline Brosh McKenna (Annie) and Chris Weitz (About a Boy) have written the screenplay for the movie, although there’s still no info on whether this will be a traditional take or something a little more modern. Lily James is set to play Cinderella, with Cate Blanchett wicked stepmother, Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera as the nasty stepsisters, Helena Bonham Carter channelling her inner fairy godmother and Richard Madden as the prince.

Filming will kick off later this year.

Film Based On Boston Marathon Bombing Planned

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boston-bombingIt’s not even three month since the Boston Marathon Bombing, but Hollywood is already eyeing it as a possible movie, with Deadline reporting the Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, the writing duo behind David O. Russell’s The Fighter, have picked up the rights to the upcoming book, Boston Strong, by journalist and true crime author Casey Sherman, and Boston Herald reporter Dave Wedge.

The idea of the book isn’t just to tell the story of the bombing and the massive manhunt that followed, but also to capture the reaction of ordinary Bostonians to the events that overtook their city. Many will inevitably feel it’s still far too soon to be thinking about making a movie based on the tragedy, and indeed Tamasy and Johnson may find that feeling a roadblock to actually getting the project funded. However if they can find the right way to do it, it may become a worthwhile project.

And of course, with the book not due until next year and films generally taking even longer to produce, it may not seem so tacky by the time the movie itself materialises.

Josh Brolin Is Out Of His Box In The First Oldboy Remake Poster

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oldboy-poster1While there are still a lot of people angry that Hollywood would dare to remake Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy, the fact is that it’s coming, with Spike Lee directing and Josh Brolin starring. Now the first poster and some images (via Facebook) have arrived, which suggest Lee is keen to put his own stamp on the film.

Indeed it makes it all look a little strange and mysterious. We’ll be able to get a better feel for the movie on Wednesday, which is when the first trailer is due.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

‘Co-starring Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley, OLDBOY was directed by Spike Lee, from a script by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, The Cell, Thor). The film was produced by Roy Lee, Doug Davison and Nathan Kahane.’

Dev Patel In Talks For Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dev-PatelThere was a big gap between District 9 and Elysium, but director Neill Blomkamp is working hard to ensure his next movie doesn’t take as long. He’s already signed up old cohort Sharlto Copley for the movie, and now THR reports that Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel is in early talks for the movie.

If he does sign on, the movie would take him back to the slums, as while much of the story is being kept under wraps, it is known that Chappie is based on a 2005 short by Blomkamp, called Tetra Vaal, which was a fake ad for a robotic police force patrolling the slums of South Africa (you can watch that below). It certainly seems Blomkamp is keeping with the sci-fi with a social edge.

Blomkamp’s next movie, Elysium hits US cinemas on August 9th and comes to the UK on August 26th.

Charlie Kaufman May Take On Slaughterhouse Five For Guillermo Del Toro

July 9, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

charlie-kaufmanGuillermo Del Toro is the opposite of Christopher Nolan and JJ Abrams. While they like to keep everything they do secret, Del Toro cannot help but talk about every possibility in his future. He’s currently promoting Pacific Rim, and has been chatting about various things, including that he wants to work with Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) on a movie version of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five.

ThePlaylist reports that Del Toro says, “Charlie Kaufman and I talked for about an hour-and-a-half and came up with a perfect way of doing the book. I love the idea of the Trafalmadorians to be ‘unstuck in time,’ where everything is happening at the same time. And that’s what I want to do. It’s just a catch-22. The studio will make it when it’s my next movie, but how can I commit to it being my next movie until there’s a screenplay? Charlie Kaufman is a very expensive writer!”

It seems therefore nothing has been sorted yet, so this is still just a possibility rather than a probability.

The book follows WWII soldier Billy Pilgrim, who becomes ‘unstuck in time’, living through periods of his life in haphazard fashion (yeah, that does sound a bit like Time Traveller’s Wife, but Slaughterhouse Five is actually good).

Christian Bale’s first post-Batman role comes later this year with the thriller Out Of The Furnace. Now the first pic from the movie has arrived, via USA Today, giving as a look at both Bale and Woody Harrelson in Scott Cooper’s movie.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Russell (Christian Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) live in the economically-depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.’

A December US release is set.

Director Chad Darnell Talks About His Planned Biopic Of Gay Porn Star Joey Stefano

July 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

joey-stefanoIn the late 80s and early 90s Joey Stefano (born Nicholas Anthony Iacona Jr.) was one of the biggest names in gay porn. However he became HIV+ and was addicted to drugs, which led to his death from a speedball overdose at the age of only 26.

Now filmmaker Chad Darnell (Birthday) is planning a biopic of Stefano, called X-Rated, and he’s been talking to Queerty about his upcoming movie.

Talking about what drew him to the story, he says, “This is a story about addiction. The film is about the entire ‘porn brat pack:’ Chi Chi LaRue, Sharon Kane, Mickey Skee, Karen Dior and of course, Joey. They were a family. So, while Joey’s story is front and center in the film, as I’ve joked, it’s a little more X-Men and less Wolverine. It’s an ensemble film. Each of these characters battled years of addiction and Joey’s addictions killed him and everyone knew his addiction would kill him.”

As for who will play the central role,  he says, “I know who I want and I’m just waiting for the right pieces to be in place before we make the ‘ask.’ He was on a television show last season. I’m also excited about casting ‘Brian Maley’ and ‘Mickey Skee.’ I’ve really enjoyed getting to know all the surviving members of this story, so I’m very protective of them and how they are going to be portrayed.”

Some actors are already attached though. He adds, “We currently have attached Missi Pyle as Sharon Kane, Ryan O’Connor as Chi Chi LaRue and Willam Belli as Karen Dior. I have a few television actors who are interested in some of the other roles, and it will just really come down to availability and their schedule. We’ve done three cast readings of the script and everyone who has seen it and knew ‘the pack; say that Ryan, Missi and Willam are Larry, Sharon, and Karen.”

You can read more over at Queerty. There’s no news though on exactly when we might be able to see the film.

Ender’s Game Film Boycott Planned In Protest At Author Orson Scott Card’s Anti-Gay Views

July 8, 2013 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

Enders-Game-Poster1Even since it became clear that Hollywood intended to make a book out of Orson Scott Card’s classic novel Ender’s Game, there have been rumbles of discontent from those who knew Card holds anti-gay views. Some have suggested a boycott of the movie, while others are trying to organise an offset, donating to pro-gay causes to balance out any cash that might go to the author.

Now Geeks OUT has started what they hope will become a boycott of the film, urging people to ‘Skip Ender’s Game‘ and ‘keep your money out of Orson Scott Card’s pockets’. As well as hoping people won’t go to see the movie, they also hope their efforts will raise awareness of what Card stands ford. They ask that when the movie is released in November, people organise or attend a ‘Skip Ender’s Game’ event. Geeks OUT is already planning gatherings in Chicago, Dallas, New York, Orlando, Seattle, and Toronto.

“By pledging to Skip Ender’s Game, we can send a clear and serious message to Card and those that do business with his brand of anti-gay activism — whatever he’s selling, we’re not buying,” Geeks OUT officials write. “The queer geek community will not subsidize his fear-mongering and religious bullying. We will not pay him to demean, insult, and oppress us.”

So is Orson Scott Card really that bad? Well, yes, as he doesn’t just privately hold mildly anti-gay views, he’s actively working to withhold rights from gay people. For example, the author has previously said he believes gay sex should be banned (although he’s more recently suggested he no longer wants to see it criminalised), that same sex marriage is wrong, and has linked child abuse and homosexuality. He also sits on board of directors of the National Organization for Marriage, one of the leading anti-equal marriage lobbies, and one that’s been particularly unpleasant in its rhetoric. He also reportedly wrote in a 2009 Mormon Times opinion piece that, “Marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down.”

Just last year he wrote, “Normalizing a dysfunction [which is how he was referring to being gay] will only make ours into a society that corrodes any loyalty to it, as parents see that our laws and institutions now work against the reproductive success (not to mention happiness) of the next generation.”

Others have argued that the movie, which stars Harrison Ford (who’s very pro-gay) and Asa Butterfield, should be viewed as completely separate to Card’s views. However there’s no doubt that the more successful the film is, the more money he makes, some of which he may channel to fighting against gay rights. Expect there to be plenty more debate in the coming months.

(Here at BGPS, we haven’t completely ignored the film, although we have deliberately limited our coverage, and we’ve also made mention of Card’s opinions whenever we’ve talked about the film – we’d love to hear if you think we should join the boycott and stop talking about Ender’s Game).
