April 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

He’s been working on it for several years, but now he’s ready to movie forward, with Latino Review reporting that Colin Firth is now in talks to star.

The actor will play Uncle Jack, an MI6 spy who takes his nephew Gary under his wing to teach him the ropes, in hopes the dodgy youngster will change his ways and become an MI6 agent. The role of Gary has yet to be cast.

Mark Millar described the story as a cross between James Bond and My Fair Lady.

Matthew Vaughn is directing from a screenplay he wrote with Jane Goldman, based on the Mark Millar comic book series. Fox signed up to distribute in February, at which point an August production start date was tentatively scheduled.

LGBT Bridegroom Documentary Wins Tribeca Audience Award & Presidential Praise

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

bridegroom-posterLast year the short video ‘It Could Happen To You‘ went massively viral. It told the story of Shane Bitney Crone and his boyfriend Tom, and how when Tom tragically died, Shane found himself completely frozen out by his boyfriend’s homophobic family, with no recourse as his rights were not recognised.

That quickly led to the idea of a feature-length documentary, which became Kickstarter’s highest ever funded project (at the time). The completed project has now premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it even got support from Bill Clinton, who introduced the film. He said, “This is really on one level a wonderful, sad, heartbreaking, yet exhilarating and life-affirming story, and on another level, it’s a story about our nation’s struggle to make one more step in forming a more perfect union, for which marriage is both the symbol and the substance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.”

There was more good news for the movie, as it picked up the Tribeca Heineken Audience Award, which comes with an award of $25,000.

Director Linda Bloodworth Thomason commented, “We are shocked. We were so grateful to just be selected for the Festival; we never imagined we would win the audience award, Hopefully the power of this story will propel the film into theaters across America and beyond.”

You can watch the trailer for the documentary below, and hopeful we’ll all be able to see it soon. (Source: The Advocate)

Final Fast & Furious 6 Trailer Arrives – The Cars rev up once again

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s just under a month until Fast & Furious 6 hits cinemas, and so to ensure fans’ excitement is at a maximum, Universal has released the final trailer for the movie, which features a little more plot than previous promos, while also offering plenty of high-octane action.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in Fast & Furious 6.  Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favourites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.

‘Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe.  But their inability to return home and living forever on the run has left their lives incomplete.

‘Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organisation of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez).  The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London.  Payment?  Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again.’

The movie hits cinemas May 24th.

300-rise-of-an-empire-pic3After years of delays, the follow-up to 300 is finally on its way, with 300: Rise Of An Empire due to hit cinemas this summer. We had the first couple of pics and a poster a few days ago, and now we get our first look at Eva Green in the movie, who’s looking pretty bad-ass as she stands on a ship, swords in hand.

The film stars Sullivan Stapleton as General Themistokles, who attempts to unite all of Greece in battle against the evil Persian ruler Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Eva Green plays Artemisia, the vengeful second-in-command to god-king Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), who leads a Persian armada against a Greek army. The plot is said to run parallel to 300.

Fatal Attraction Helmer Adrian Lyne Heads Into Deep Water

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

adrian-lyneAdrian Lyne made his name with the likes of Flashdance, Fatal Attraction and Jacob’s Ladder, but he hasn’t made a movie since Unfaithful in 2002. However now he’s heading back to the set as he has signed up to direct the Patricia Highsmith adaptation, Deep Water.

The book is about a young married couple, whose lives are altered when their acquaintances begin turning up dead. While no actors have been attached at this time, Deadline reports that conversations are under way with a ‘big star’ to take one of the lead roles. Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) wrote the screenplay adaptation, with financing the project.

It may not end up as Lyne’s first film back as director, as he’s also attached to the John Grisham adaptation The Associate and a family drama called Back Roads.

Pain And Gain Tops The US Box Office, With Iron Man 3 Taking A Gargantuan Haul Internationally

April 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pain-and-gain-poster3Michael Bay has proved he can still pull in the punters away from massive robots, as his Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg starrer, Pain And Gain, topped the US box office with $20 million in its first weekend. Although that’s a lot less than Bay’s Transformers movies opened to, that’s only to be expected from an R-rated thriller with a dash of comedy. And as it only cost $26 million to make, it’s likely headed for a healthy profit.

There was less cheer for The Big Wedding, which opened to a rather meagre $7.5 million, despite a cast including Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Robin Williams and Amanda Seyfried. While Hollywood still seems to think wedding comedies are a surefire winner, Big Wedding has followed a trend of diminishing returns for this seemingly never-ending subgenre.

Those were the only new movies in the top 10, as the Matthew McConaughey drama Mud landed at number 11 on its opening in limited release. However the really big news took place outside the US, where the international opening of Iron Man 3 took a truly massive $195 million.

The film opened in 79% of territories outside North America, and if Disney had any worries about the poster-Avengers Marvel world, they’ll have been laid to rest. $195 million is $10 million ahead of what Avengers took in those territories in its first three days. It had the biggest opening ever in Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore It’s one of the biggest international opening ever and certainly suggests the film is going to be one of this year’s biggest hitters

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of April 26th-28th.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Pain And Gain $20.0 $20.0
2 Oblivion $17.4 $64.7
3 42 $10.7 $69.0
4 The Big Wedding $7.5 $7.5
5 The Croods $6.6 $163.0
6 GI Joe: Retaliation $3.6 $116.3
7 Scary Movie 5 $3.4 $27.4

Transgender Actor Finally Cast In Transgender Role, In Film That’s Now Seeking Funding

April 27, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve become used to the fact that if a film or TV series has a transgender role, the person cast will be gender conforming (i.e. identifies with the sex assigned to them at birth). One of the more high profile cases recently was the TV series Hit & Miss, which launched a large search for a transgender actress, but then cast Chloe Sevigny as a woman born with male genitalia.

However now it’s finally happened – a film has cast a transgender actor in a transgender role! The film is question is the rom-com Boy Meets Girl, which now has transgender actress Michelle Hendley as its lead after a US wide hunt (Hendley was discovered thanks to a Skype audition). The movie is currently seeking funding via Indiegogo, where it’s hoping to raise $95,000 to make it a reality.

Here’s the plot description: ‘Boy Meets Girl is a tender, human, sex-positive romantic comedy that explores what it means to be “real”: to live and love authentically to the truth of one’s heart, regardless of the sex or small town you’re born into. Our story focuses on Ricky, a beautiful twenty-one year old transgendered girl living in Virginia with dreams of becoming a fashion designer in New York.’

Eric Schaeffer will direct, who’s previously made the likes of If Lucy Fell, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Stiller and Elle Macpherson.

The director commented to Queerty, “I’m passionate about breaking the mold of sexual and emotional convention in the pursuit of creating more unity in our increasingly fractured world. Being a ‘straight man,’ albeit one who admits to many things most straight men don’t, and living my life with a colorful spectrum of sexual and emotional tastes, desires and behaviors that don’t always seem to be accepted, I feel a duty to portray characters in my films who, like myself, admit to and accept without condition the parts of themselves and others that can be best described and must start being labeled as one thing and one thing only: human.  That is why I make any film.  That is why I am inspired to make this one.”
