Not enough cinemas have gay movie nights, but Riverside Studios in London’s Hammersmith is bucking that trend with Deep Desires & Broken Dreams, a gay men’s film season running February 21st-27th. The selection of movies includes an eclectic array of features, shorts and documentaries that hope to reflect the diverse lives of gay men from the 1930s to the present day.
Included are two two UK premieres, including the gritty Bristol based feature Cal (a follow-up to the excellent 2009 urban LGBT flick Shank), as well as a compilation of sexy shorts called Sexual Tension: Volume 1. Other recent features include the black musical Leave it on the Floor, Ira Sachs award-winning Keep the Lights On, the acclaimed Gayby, the US hit comedy You Should Meet My Son, and a fascinating exploration into gender reassignment in Lawrence Anyways.
The season also delves back into yester-year, showcasing a number of great films from the archive including Kiss of the Spider Woman, Beautiful Thing and Cabaret (which is celebrating its 40th anniversary)! There will also be Q&A’s, discussions, a late night bar and the chance to enjoy a festival atmosphere with a like-minded gay audience at west London’s leading arts venue.
