Gore Verbinski Takes On Pyongyang Adaptation

January 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Gore-VerbinskiWhile we tend to think of the world as a shrinking place, there are certain places that remain resolutely remote, such as North Korea, which has pretty much shut itself off from the rest of the world. However Deadline reports that Gore Verbinski is hoping to take us there, at least virtually, as he has teamed up with New Regency to direct and produce an adaptation of Guy Delisle’s graphic novel Pyongyang.

Here’s the official description of the graphic novel, ‘A westerner’s visit into North Korea, told in the form of a graphic novel. Famously referred to as one of the “Axis of Evil” countries, North Korea remains one of the most secretive and mysterious nations in the world today. In early 2001 cartoonist Guy Delisle became one of the few Westerners to be allowed access to the fortresslike country. While living in the nation’s capital for two months on a work visa for a French film animation company, Delisle observed what he was allowed to see of the culture and lives of the few North Koreans he encountered; his findings form the basis of this remarkable graphic novel. Pyongyang is an informative, personal, and accessible look at a dangerous and enigmatic country.’

The story also deals with the author being accused of espionage during his stay. Steve Conrad (The Weather Man, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) is writing the adapted screenplay. It isn’t known when it might shoot, but presumably Verbinski is hoping to get it into production after Lone Ranger is released this summer.

Eva Green Will Play Femme Fatale In Sin City: A Dame to Kill

January 30, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Eva-GreenThe cast of Sin City : A Dame To Kill For has been growing almost daily, but one things it’s been lacking is the dame of the title. Now it’s got one as it’s been announced that co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have chosen Eva Green (Dark Shadows, 300: Rise of an Empire, Casino Royale) to star as the film’s deadly muse, Ava Lord.

Ava, the iconic character from Miller’s graphic novel of the same name, is described by Miller as “every man’s most glorious dreams come true, she’s also every man’s darkest nightmares.”

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller commented, “We’ve been wanting to tell this story for a very long time. Ava Lord is one of the most deadly and fascinating residents of Sin City. From the start, we knew that the actor would need to be able to embody the multifaceted characteristics of this femme fatale and we found that in Eva Green. We are ecstatic that Eva is joining us.”

Eva Green joining the film rounds out the huge cast that includes original cast members Mickey Rourke as “Marv,” Jessica Alba as “Nancy,” Bruce Willis as “Hartigan”, Rosario Dawson as “Gail” and Jaime King as “Goldie/Wendy” with new cast members Josh Brolin as “Dwight,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt as “Johnny,” Dennis Haysbert as “Manute,” Christopher Meloni as “Mort,” Jeremy Piven as “Bob,” Jamie Chung as “Miho,” Ray Liotta as “Joey,” Juno Temple as “Sally.”

Also joining the cast is Julia Garner, an up-and-comer whose credits include Martha Marcy May Marlene and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She will play a young stripper opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Johnny.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For weaves together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants.

The Amazing Randi Biopic, An Honest Liar, Seeks Funding

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

honest-liar-randiJames ‘The Amazing’ Randi is a magician who in the last few decades has become one of the world’s most prominent sceptics of the paranormal, famously offering a million dollar reward to anyone who can prove paranormal abilities under laboratory conditions. Due to his outspoken debunking, he has been sued numerous times by the likes of Uri Geller, although he claims never to have had to pay a cent to anyone (although a lot of cash has gone on defending himself).

He’s also gay, a fact he didn’t reveal until three years ago when he was 81, after being inspired to come out by the film Milk. He was also facing the fact his partner of well over two decades, Jose, could possibly be deported, even though he escaped from his native Venezuela due to persecution for being a gay man.

Now Director/Producer Justin Weinstein is trying to put together a historical biography film project about Randi, called An Honest Liar, and has turned to Kickstarter to help. There’s already been a lot of backing, with $137,000 of the $148,000 total pledged. Weinstein is hoping to raise more that the $148,000 minimum though, as while the current total will allow more filming to go ahead, if they can raise extra cash that will help fund post-production.

Randi is certainly an interesting figure who’s well worth making a film about. For decades he was a well-known magician, even working with Alice Cooper to build stage tricks (and appear onstage) for one of his 1970s tour. He then began demonstrating supposedly paranormal tricks, such as spoon bending and saying they were just illusion, which turned him into a professional sceptic (leading some to claim he is psychic and lying about it!)

Behind all this and unknown to the public, he was living as a gay man – and of course when he was young gay sex was illegal. We’d certainly like to see a documentary about him, so head over to Kickstarter to help.

Tim Blake Nelson Joins James Franco’s Bukowski & Tommy Lee Jones’ Homesman

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tim-Blake-NelsonTim Blake Nelson is probably still best known for O Brother Where Art Thou?, but he’s always good value for money, giving great performances in everything from Minority Report and Incredible Hulk to Syriana and most recently Lincoln.

Now he’s booked two new roles, according to THR, signing up for James Franco’s biopic of Charles Bukowski as well as reuniting with Lincoln co-star Tommy Lee Jones for the actor’s directing venture, The Homesman.

The Franco written and directed Bukowski will look at the writer’s early life as a child and teen, and how that helped shaped him as an author. Nelson will play Charles’ father, Henry, a man who dealt with the stresses of his life by hitting his son, eventually driving Charles to defend himself.

Tommy Lee Jones’ The Homesman meanwhile is a 19th Century tale about an untrustworthy man and a spinster school teacher who team up to transport three woman who are through to be crazy across the Western plains. Nelson will be a man who covets one of the women and tries to steal her. Hilary Swank and Meryl Streep also star. The hope is to shoot the movie this spring.

Director Pierre Morel Takes On Sean Penn Thriller Prone Gunman

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

pierre-morelSean Penn isn’t normally thought of an action star, but it looks like he’s giving it a go and getting Taken helmer Pierre Morel to help him, as THR reports Morel is now in talks to take on the film Prone Gunman.

News of Penn’s involvement in the movie first stirred late last year. It’s based on the novel of the same name by Jean-Patrick Manchette and has Penn set to star as a hired gun called Martin Terrier, who is trying to retire from his profession. After his failed attempt to leave his chosen life, he ends up in a brutal cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. Manchette’s book has been described as existentialist, as much a look at the human condition as an action film – which is probably what Penn likes.

The hope is to get the movie up and running pretty quickly. If Morel does sign on, the hope of to shoot the movie this spring in Eastern Europe.

Lucasfilm Cancels Star Wars 3D Re-releases

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-phantom-menace-3d-poster3In somewhat surprising news, Lucasfilm and Disney have cancelled plans to re-release Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones 3D and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith 3D, according to Deadline, both of which are completed and were scheduled to hit cinemas in Octber and November of this year.

The stated reason for this is that Lucasfilm and Disney are looking to focus primarily on “rebooting” the franchise. However, it’s believed that the disappointing box office of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’s 3D release, which brought in on about $43 million, is also to blame.

There’s also some suggestion that the fact that the prequel trilogy isn’t thought of favourably amongst fans, means that the studios are hoping to get the three films out of the public consciousness, so that they can concentrate on selling the new movies as a continuation of the classic trilogy. It also didn’t help that a lot of the hardcore fans felt these 3D re-releases were yet another blatant cash grab by George Lucas.

It’d be interesting to know what 20th Century Fox thinks about this, as they still have distribution rights for the original two trilogies and would have brought Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith 3D to cinemas.

Brad Bird & George Clooney’s 1952 Becomes Tomorrowland

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Brad-BirdFor a while now Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol) has been working on a secretive sci-fi project known as 1952, based on a script by Damon Lindelof (Prometheus, Lost). More recently George Clooney signed up to star.

Now it’s been revealed that the movie has a new name – Tomorrowland – although we still don’t have any details of the plot. Tomorrowland is, of course, one of the theme lands at each of the Disney theme parks. Each version of the land is different and features numerous attractions that depict views of the future.

Previous reports have suggested it’ll be a big-budget tentpole movie with additional multi-platform applications. There have also been suggestions it’s alien related as 1952 was the year of numerous UFO sightings over Washington DC, leading to speculation over an imminent invasion or the President having high level meetings with extra-terrestrials. It’s also when UFO lore says Project Blue Book started, which is allegedly an attempt to scientifically study and analyse UFO activity and whether they represent a threat.

It’s not known if Brad Bird’s film directly ties into the theme park or any of its attractions, or if they just share a name (some are speculating it could be related to the popular Tomorrowland ride, Space Mountain). A release date of December 19th, 2014 is already set.

Paul Giamatti In Talks To Play Rhino In Amazing Spider-Man 2

January 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul-GiamattiPaul Giamatti may not be the first person you’d think of to play a villain called The Rhino, but Sony and director Marc Webb obviously think differently, as they’ve got the actor in talks to play that part in The Amazing Spider-man 2. Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) is also in negotiations for an unspecified role, according to THR.

The Rhino character first appeared in the Marvel comic Amazing Spider-Man #41 in 1966, as a Soviet thug who wears a superhuman suit that makes him virtually indestructible, while giving him super strength and speed. However in recent years he’s tended to be a more sympathetic character and some are speculating that rather than being a villain, Giamatti’s Rhino will highlight the unintended consequences of Oscorp’s work, which has already ended up with Spider-man and The Lizard.

What makes the choice of Giamatti perhaps less unexpected is that back in a March 2011 interview with ShowbizSpy, the actor said it was a dream role for him. “I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid,” he said. “It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me…If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.”

Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are returning as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, while new cast members include Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Shailene Woodley as Mary-Jane Watson, and Jamie Foxx as Electro. Filming starts next month for a summer 2014 release.

New Gay-Themed Web Series, The In-Betweens, Coming Soon

January 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although TV is getting better at dealing with gay themes (although film sadly still lags behind the rest of society), some of the best LGBT projects are popping up online in the form of web series. Now a new one is incoming, The In-Betweens, about a straight woman and her gay best friend.

Following a successful Kickstarter fundraising drive last summer, the first season of the show is now on its way, starting in February.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In an ode to the quarter-life crisis, and inspired by their real-life friendship, witness Clancy and Lyndsay’s comedic romp through New York City. There will be dates with blind men, impulsive pregnancies, and other shenanigans, but mostly Lyndsay will be dating weirdos while Clancy gives epic side-eye. It’s just like life, but funnier.  This a show about the moments that happen while you’re waiting for the next big thing. And from what it seems, those are the moments that matter most.  Life is what happens in The In-Betweens.’

From the teaser video above, it looks like it could be fun. Keep an eye on the official website to see the full episodes when they start appearing next month.

Mood Indigo Trailer – Michel Gondry & Audrey Tatou go for dreamy, surreal romance

January 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michel Gondry is certainly a filmmaker who likes to chart his own course, making documentaries, music videos, commercials, and movies such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. For Mood Indigo he’s gone back to his native france and teamed up with Audrey Tatou for a rather unusual romance.

The trailer (which is in French with no subtitles) shows us a rather surreal movie, with plenty of unsual dreamy sequences. Mood Indigo is about a young couple (Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou) whose marriage is complicated by the woman’s unusual illness. The problem is that she has a water lily in her lung, and the only treatment is to surround her constantly with fresh flowers! He meanwhile is the inventor of an olfactory-musical device called the pianocktail.

While it could be great it’s a premise that might also be too quirky for its own good. Hopefully it’ll be released in the UK later this year, so we’ll get to find out.
