The New Girlfriend (Une Nouvelle Amie) (DVD Review)

September 21, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Romain Duris, Anais Demoustier, Raphaël Personnaz, Isild Le Besco
Director: Francois Ozon
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 21st 2015 (UK)

Throughout his career French director Francois Ozon has shown a great interest in both sexuality and femininity. Those two things come together in The New Girlfriend, which is based on a story by Ruth Rendell, but is certainly not a murder-mystery.

Claire (a brilliant performance from Anaïs Demoustier) is devastated when her best friend since childhood, Laura, dies. She has promised she will look out for Laura’s husband, David (Romain Duris), and their young child, but due to her grief she puts off this duty. When she finally decides to visit she is shocked to discover David looking after his baby while dressed as a woman. [Read more…]

Mood Indigo (Blu-ray Review)

December 1, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Omar Sy, Gad Elmaleh
Director: Michel Gondry
Running Time: 94 mins/131 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: December 1st 2014 (UK)

As a film reviewer it feels almost compulsory to believe that a director’s original cut is the one we ought to watch, but in some cases that’s not true.

Mood Indigo was released in France back in early 2013 with a very lengthy running time of 131 minutes. However despite having Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine, Be Kind Rewind) at the helm and talents such as Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou and Omar Sy starring, it took over a year for it to arrive in the US and UK, and when it did, it was 40 minutes shorter.

At the time, many harrumphed about the idea of philistine producers neutering Gondry’s original intentions, but the home entertainment release gives us a chance to see both versions side by side and it turns out that what we got was better than original edition the French had. [Read more…]

Chinese Puzzle (Cinema Review)

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Audrey Tatou, Romain Duris, Kelly Reilly, Cecile de France
Director: Cedric Klapish
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 20th 2014 (UK)

After Pot Luck and Russian Dolls comes the third part in Cedric Klapish’s light comedy of modern life and romance. The setting is different again, now we are in New York (after Barcelona and St Petersburg), but the characters are the same – older, not much wiser and terrified of approaching the dreaded 40.

Romain Duris and Kelly Reilly, the apparently golden couple, have split. She has met a bland millionaire in New York and leaves him, taking their two young kids with them. Devastated, he follows, determined to keep in touch with his offspring but with little prospects. He does have some help though, in the form of Cecile de France, his lesbian pal who he has helped get pregnant, and who is living in Brooklyn with her partner. He also has a flying visit from Audrey Tatou, who is determined to throw aside her stuffy past and become a go-getter, and has a business meeting in Manhattan with a Chinese company to broker a huge deal. Mood Indigo Trailer – Michel Gondry & Audrey Tatou go for dreamy, surreal romance

January 28, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Michel Gondry is certainly a filmmaker who likes to chart his own course, making documentaries, music videos, commercials, and movies such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. For Mood Indigo he’s gone back to his native france and teamed up with Audrey Tatou for a rather unusual romance.

The trailer (which is in French with no subtitles) shows us a rather surreal movie, with plenty of unsual dreamy sequences. Mood Indigo is about a young couple (Romain Duris and Audrey Tautou) whose marriage is complicated by the woman’s unusual illness. The problem is that she has a water lily in her lung, and the only treatment is to surround her constantly with fresh flowers! He meanwhile is the inventor of an olfactory-musical device called the pianocktail.

While it could be great it’s a premise that might also be too quirky for its own good. Hopefully it’ll be released in the UK later this year, so we’ll get to find out.
