Chinese Puzzle (Cinema Review)

June 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Audrey Tatou, Romain Duris, Kelly Reilly, Cecile de France
Director: Cedric Klapish
Running Time: 116 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 20th 2014 (UK)

After Pot Luck and Russian Dolls comes the third part in Cedric Klapish’s light comedy of modern life and romance. The setting is different again, now we are in New York (after Barcelona and St Petersburg), but the characters are the same – older, not much wiser and terrified of approaching the dreaded 40.

Romain Duris and Kelly Reilly, the apparently golden couple, have split. She has met a bland millionaire in New York and leaves him, taking their two young kids with them. Devastated, he follows, determined to keep in touch with his offspring but with little prospects. He does have some help though, in the form of Cecile de France, his lesbian pal who he has helped get pregnant, and who is living in Brooklyn with her partner. He also has a flying visit from Audrey Tatou, who is determined to throw aside her stuffy past and become a go-getter, and has a business meeting in Manhattan with a Chinese company to broker a huge deal. Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (Blu-ray)

May 10, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Kelly Reilly, Robert Downey Jr.
Director: Guy Ritchie
Running Time: 129 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: May 14th, 2012

All the way through 2010’s Sherlock Holmes, a shadowy figure lurked in the background who seemed to have a finger in every pie and used the mayhem Sherlock was involved with to his own ends.  In A Game Of Shadows that figure steps forward, with Jared Harris as Professor James Moriarty, who is Sherlock’s intellectual equal, even if he uses his brains for very different ends.

A series of explosions is rocking Europe and threaten to destabilise the already tenuous peace between the nations, with war a very real possibility. As you’d expect, Sherlock is soon deep in this conspiracy and has very quickly worked out that Moriarty is involved. However it’s not enough to know who’s behind it, as there’s no tangible evidence. As a result Holmes must investigate and work out Moriarty’s end game in order to stop the villain. [Read more…]

Melissa Leo & More Join Sam Rockwell In A Single Shot

April 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While Sam Rockwell spends most of his time in supporting roles, occassionally he gets to take on a meaty leading role. He’s got just such a part in A Single Shot, which recently started shooting and has now announced a rather rocking supporting cast, with Deadline reporting that William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright, Joe Anderson, Jason Isaacs, Kelly Reilly, Ophelia Lovibond, and Melissa Leo are all onboard.

Based on Matthew F. Jones’s novel (who also wrote the screeplay), A Single Shot is the story of a dark and deadly game of cat and mouse, prompted by the tragic death of a young girl. Rockwell plays a wild-game poacher who makes a fatal mistake that leaves him with a suitcase full of blood money and hardened killers on his trail. As the hunter becomes the hunted, John Moon is forced to defend his family and fight for his life.

David M. Rosenthal is directing.
