Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg May Write Star Wars VIII & IX

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After spending $4 billion on Lucasfilm, it doesn’t appear Disney is taking a gentle, see show it goes approach to Star Wars. Last week it was revealed that Michael Arndt had signed up to script Star Wars: Episode VII, and now it seems the House Of Mouse wants the scripts for Episodes VIII and IX written at the same time.

Both Deadline and THR report that sources have told them Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back screenwriter and director Lawrence Kasdan has been hired to pen the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VIII. Kasdan also wrote Return of the Jedi and Raiders of the Lost Ark for Lucasfilm.

Screenwriter Simon Kinberg is likely to cover scripting duties on the final chapter in this upcoming new trilogy, Star Wars: Episode IX. He is best known for his work on X-Men: First Class and the Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr..

It’s said that both Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg have already signed on, but Disney will not confirm that news at this time, so take it as a well sourced rumour for now. If all three films are indeed being written at essentially the same time, its likely that the three writers will be collaborating amongst themselves in terms of sorting through George Lucas detailed story notes.

The concurrent writing also has to make you wonder if Disney is planning to shoot the new trilogy back-to-back, which could be the most cost-effective way, and may also help get the original cast back if they know they can do it all at once, rather than running to and from the sets so Disney can make the films for release every two-to-three years. We’ll have to wait and see.

Evil Dead Remake Poster – Making claims it can’t live up to?

November 21, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Perhaps we’ll all get to phone Claims Direct next April and say we want compensation because despite the promise of this poster, the remake of The Evil Dead isn’t ‘The most terrifying film you will ever experience’. But hey, perhaps it will be, and instead we’ll have the check into the hospital to deal with out shattered nerves.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin where they discover a Book Of The Dead and unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.’ That’s exactly the same as the original, but this do-over doe s change a few things, such as the Bruce Campbell character in the original now becoming a woman.

If you want to see more, take a look at the red band teaser. The film is due to hit cinemas April 12th 2013.

Gay Christmas Carol, Scrooge & Marley, Screening Dates Announced Across The US

November 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It had to happen. Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is the most adapted story in the history of film and TV, and so it’s only right and proper that a gay version should have been made. Scrooge & Marley has now revealed screening dates for its US release in 12 cities across the States. It will also be available on DVD & Blu-ray from December.

Recounted from a gay sensibility, with heart, comedy and music, the magic of Dickens’ timeless tale of a man’s redemption at the holidays – thanks to the help of three ghostly spirits – comes alive from a fresh perspective that will appeal to audiences of every persuasion. Out actor David Pevsner portrays Ben Scrooge while former Saturday Night Live star Tim Kazurinsky appears as the Ghost of Jacob Marley. The film also stars Rusty Schwimmer, Bruce Vilanch, Megan Cavanagh, Ronnie Kroell, David Moretti, Richard Ganoung, and JoJo Baby. It is narrated by Tony award-winning actress, Judith Light.

The movie kicks off with an LA run Nov. 21-27 at the Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena. In Chicago, the hometown film will run one week at the prestigious Music Box Theatre Nov. 29-Dec. 6, including an opening night gala with the actors and filmmakers.

Kevin Clash, Elmo’s Gay Puppeteer, Resigns From Sesame Street

November 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

Last week many were surprised when Kevin Clash, the man who for the last 28 years has been the voice and puppeteer behind Sesame Street’s Elmo, not only came out as gay, but also got embroiled in a sex scandal. 24-year-old Sheldon Stephens claimed he’d had a sexual relationship with Clash when he was only 16, something that he said was illegal as he hadn’t reached the age of consent (which in the US varies between 16 & 18 depending on the state).

Now Clash has resigned from Sesame Street permanently.

Immediately after the claims came to light, Kevin took a leave of absence from the long-running children’s show to fight the the claims and it seemed he’d managed to do that very quickly as a couple of days later, Stephens recanted him accusation, saying through his lawyers that he, ‘now wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship. He will have no further comment on the matter.’

Although that seemed to have cleared the way for Kevin to return to Sesame Street, things have become muddied in the past couple of days, with reports that Stephens has recanted him recantation, and now says he was pressured into signing an agreement that he would retract his claims in return for a six-figure settlement. TMZ has reported that he now claims his initial accusation about the illicit affair with Clash were true, and that he would gladly forfeit the settlement in order to restore his name.

To make matters worse a second accuser has now come forward, with another TMZ story reporting that a 24-year-old called Cecil Singleton is suing Clash in federal court, claiming the two met on a gay phone chat line. The accuser says he was 15 at the time, and Clash was 17 years his senior.

The new claimaint alleges Clash “groomed [him] to gain his trust by, among other things, taking him to nice dinners and giving him money.” He adds that he believes it’s something like a hobby for Clash to troll “gay telephone chat line rooms to meet and have sex with underage boys.” The accuser says he, “did not become aware that he had suffered adverse psychological and emotional effects from Kevin Clash’s sexual acts and conduct until 2012.” and he wants $5 million in damages.

It appears this new development has resulted in Clash’s decision to formally resign. Sesame Workshop has issued a statement, saying, “Sesame Workshop’s mission is to harness the educational power of media to help all children the world over reach their highest potential. Kevin Clash has helped us achieve that mission for 28 years, and none of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organization. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street.”

Although it’s difficult to know the full truth of all this, it’s been strongly suggested this may not be the first time aspiring-model Stephens has had a relationship with an older, powerful man that ended messily. One of these liaisons is even said to have resulted in his being arrested after claims were made he’d stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewellery at knifepoint, although this never got to court. He’s also been arrested for passing bad checks and reckless driving. Little is currently known about Singleton.

Oh, and if you’re wondering what will happen to Elmo, he will continue to appear in Sesame Street, but with a different puppeteer.

New Parental Guidance Trailer – Billy Crystal and Bette Midler look after the grandkids

November 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Billy Crystal and Bette Midler may not be the box office names they once were, but it’s always good to see them on screen, and now they’ve teamed up for Parental Guidance, based on an idea from Crystal. A new trailer for the movie has now arrives, which you can see right here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Old school grandfather Artie (Crystal), who is accustomed to calling the shots, meets his match when he and his eager-to-please wife Diane (Midler) agree to babysit their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents go away for work. But when 21st century problems collide with Artie and Diane’s old school methods of tough rules, lots of love and old-fashioned games, it’s learning to bend – and not holding your ground – that binds a family together.’ It’s currently due for release on December 26th, 2012.

The Smurfs 2 International Teaser – Back in blue

November 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Smurfs movie was far more fun than it had any right to be, and with a worldwide gross of $563 million you can certainly understand why Sony wants another bite at the cherry. The Smurfs 2 is set for release July 31st 2013 and now a brief, international teaser has shown up over on The Smurfs’ Hong Kong Facebook page.

There’s no story details, just a Smurf giving us notice that he and his brethren will be back for more 3D adventures next year.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants — and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs — Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world’s greatest sorcerer. It’s up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrik Harris and Jayma Mayes), and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus – or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?’

Third George Lucas & Kathleen Kennedy Star Wars Update Arrives

November 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The promised weekly updates on Star Wars continue with the latest chat between George Lucas and Kathleen Kenned about the franchise. It seems the conversations are laregely an attempt to stop fans’ heads exploding due to rampant speculation that Disney buying the franchise will end up with Mickey Mouse fighting Captain America on Tatooine.

This time the old and new heads of Lucasfilm talk about how they first met and why Lucas felt Kennedy might be the woman to pass the company to (the fact she’s produced everything from ET to Jurassic Park probably helped). Don’t expect many details on Star Wars VII, as this is more about suggesting a smooth transition from old to new and that fans don’t have to worry (although worrying is one of the defining features of the true Star Wars obsessive).

I’m not sure how many more of these there will be, and as they were all recorded a few weeks ago, they may not give us too many more details about future plans, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Pedro Almodovar Plans A Sci-fi Movie

November 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Pedro Almodovar isn’t normally thought of as a sci-fi director, although his last film, The Skin I Live In, certainly had sci-fi elements and they’ve also popped up in some of his other movies. However it now appears the gay director wants to make a full-on sci-fi, according to Variety.

Almodovar was recently in London both to accept The Skin I Live In’s BAFTA award for Best Film Not In The English language (he’s only 10 months later in picking that one up), as well as to deliver the institute’s annual David Lean Lecture on his personal film heritage.

He told the audience, “The way I would like to do a science-fiction movie is to present something impossible in a real, domestic way. I am still young enough to make one. I have ideas for the genre. One of the scripts currently on my desk is of that genre, so I hope to make it.”

That’s certainly not him saying this will be on our screens soon (he said as much: “I live with my stories for many years. I write more like a novelist than a screenwriter.”), but a proper Almodovar sci-fi movie is certainly an intriguing proposition. The director apparently cited Invasion Of The Body Snatchers as a touchstone for him, which could give us a hint as to what sort of film he might make.

Almodovar’s next film is I’m So Excited, a comedy starring Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega. It should be in cinemas next summer.

Rupert Sanders Out Of Snow White Sequel, With Kristen Stewart Back In

November 20, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

When news of the affair between Snow White And The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders and star Kristen Stewart, it became clear one of them would have to bow out of any sequels. Back in August it appeared it was Stewart who was leaving, with Sanders still attached to direct.

However now it seems that’s reversed, with Radar Online saying that Kristen Stewart is back onboard for the sequel, with Rupert Sanders departing the project. An insider commented, “The script has already been written and production will begin late next year. However, Rupert Sanders definitely won’t be a part of the project. Rupert didn’t want to be a part of it to begin with because he is desperately still trying to save his marriage. The search is still on for a new director.”

While Stewart initially left (or was fired, depending on who you believe) to distance herself from the scandal as much as possible, she’s apparently now keen to reprise her Snow White role. The source also says, “Kristen is extremely concerned about her acting career. Other than the Snow White sequel she isn’t attached to any other projects. There are scripts coming in, but not as many good ones as she would like. It’s distressing to Kristen that Rob (Pattinson) is attached to four separate movies over the next year-and-a-half. Even her Twilight co-stars, Taylor Lautner and Ashley Greene, are more in demand than ever, with both committed to two different movies each. Kristen just hopes that that the fallout over her relationship with Rupert doesn’t hurt her career.”

None of this has been officially announced, so it may well change, but it appears this is the state of play at the moment.
