Michelle Pfeiffer Circles Luc Besson’s Malavita

May 30, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dark Shadows may not have been huge financially, but it’s certainly helped people remember Michelle Pfeiffer after she’s spent a few years in the wilderness, Now Variety reports she’s in talk for another motherly role in Luc Besson’s Malavita.

The story, adapted from Tonino Benacquista’s novel Badfellas, is about the Manzoni clan, a mafia family who are relocated to France under the witness protection program. Despite their efforts to adapt to their new surroundings, they find themselves reverting back to their gangster tactics. Robert De Niro is playing the head of this family, while Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife.

Luc Besson will direct from his own screenplay, with production scheduled to begin this August. Pfeiffer and De Niro previously appeared together in Matthew Vaughn’s Stardust and Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve.

K-11 Trailer – Goran Visnjic gets locked up with the gays

May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At the moment we’re reserving judgment on K-11. Although it’s rare for a film with a fairly well-known cast to deal with transgendered characters at all, there’s a chance K-11 will be exploitative and treat women born as men as a bit of a freakshow. However right now we’ll give it a chance as it’s an idea that could be good if handled well (although we’re not sure from this trailer). In the film, Goran Visnjic plays a record producer who comes around after binging on drink and drugs, and finds himself in a section of the Los Angeles County Jail reserved for gay and transgender people, which is ruled by a transsexual named Mousey. The movie stars Visnjic, Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur), Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt), D.B. Sweeney (Hard Ball), Jason Mewes (Clerks), Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister (The Dark Knight), Tara Buck (Justified) and Cameron Stewart in his feature film debut.

Rush: Lauda Vs. Hunt Featurette – First look at Ron Howard’s F1 flick

May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although F1 isn’t that popular in the US, Ron Howard is hoping the lure of fast cars and womanising men will lure in an audience over there for Rush, which follows the 1970s rivalry on Nikki Lauda and James Hunt (Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth), the former a more staid, professional man, while the latter loved the high life and fast women. The featurette above first aired on the BBC and gives us our first look at the film, which is shooting now for release next year.

New Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Trailer

May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Although there’s still the possibility it’ll be a horrible mess, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is definitely one of this summer’s most intriguing flick. The trailers we’ve had certainly look cool! Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter reimagines the American president as an axe-wielding, highly trained vampire hunter. Seth Grahame-Smith’s book, on which the movie will be based, gives new context to Lincoln’s rise to the presidency as well as the American Civil War (which was fought because the vampires were in league with the slave owners), suggesting these events were a lot more paranormal than history tells us, and stemmed from Lincoln’s mother’s murder by a vampire when he was a child. The film hits UK cinemas August 2nd.

Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sofia Coppola has been busy shooting her latest movie, The Bling Ring, and now the first official image from the flick has debuted via EW. The movie features a young and funky cast, many of whom are newcomers, although Emma Watson, Leslie Mann and Paris Hilton (as herself) all star, while Kirsten Dunst and Gavin Rossdale will have cameos. The image features (from left to right), Georgia Rock, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Katie Chang, and Claire Pfister.

The drama is based on the true story of six teenagers, known as The Bling Ring, who broke into the homes of Hollywood celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and The Hills’ Audrina Patridge, making off with over $3 million in stolen goods from October 2008 to August 2009. It’s due out later this year.

New Pics From Tarantino’s Django Unchained Debut

May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Six new images has arrived from Django Unchained, courtesy of The Playlist, giving us a new look at Quentin Tarantino’s western, which stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio. They come shortly after the first footage was screened at Cannes, which got a very positive buzz, despite the slightly rough state of what was shown (the movie is still shooting).

The film sees Jamie Foxx’s Django escaping enslavement and with the help of Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter heads off on a mission of revenge against those who wronged him. Most importantly Django wants to find his wife, who’s being kept by evil plantation and brothel owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio).

Take a look at the new images above and below. The film will be in cinemas at Christmas.

Men In Black III Tops Memorial Day US Box Office

May 29, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The Avengers has finally been toppled from the top of the US box office, with Men In Black 3 taking $70 million over the Memorial Day weekend. It’s not quite the $75-$80 million that Sony was hoping for it’s not a bad start, and the studio certainly can’t be upset that worldwide the movie took just over $200 million, suggesting it’ll make back its hefty investment in the movie even if it doesn’t end up as profitable as the earlier films in the series.

The only other new entry in the top 10 is Chernobyl Diaries, which took a soft $9.3 million. Although not as much as some expected, as it’s a low budget flick, it could be worse.

Outside the top 10, Moonrise Kingdom got off to a great start, taking $669,000 on only four screens for an incredibly impressive per screen average of $167,000. It’s an incredibly good opening and suggests the Wes Anderson movie will do very well as it expands onto more screens over the coming week.

Rank Title Weekend Gross (millions) Total Gross to date (millions)
1 Men In Black 3 $70 $70
2 The Avengers $46.8 $523.5
3 Battleship $13.7 $47.2
4 The Dictator $11.7 $43.6
5 Dark Shadows $9.4 $64.8
6 Chernobyl Diaries $9.3 $9.3
7 What To Expect When You’re Expecting $8.8 $23.8
8 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $8.2 $18.4
9 The Hunger Games $2.8 $395.8

Iron Sky Director Timo Vuorensola Says I Killed Hitler

May 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

While the ‘Nazis on the moon’ flick Iron Sky has met mixed reviews, it’s journey to find funding through crowdsourcing and the way it’s managed to maintain a groundswell of interest during the years between the idea and the finished film is impressive.

It’s certainly meant there’s been a lot of interest in director Timo Vuorensola, who already says he’s got a TV miniseries prequel and cinematic sequel to Iron Sky in the works (although whether they’ll see the light of day in another matter after the mixed response to the first film).

Now he’s also working on another movie according to Twitch, which still keeps with the Nazi theme, as it’s based on the graphic novel I Killed Hitler. Created by Jason (aka cartoonist John Arne Sæterøy), the comic is set in a dangerous world where contract killers are legal and can be hired to wipe out anyone who’s annoying you.

One of these assassins is contracted to go back to 1939 to murder Hitler, but things go wrong. The Fuhrer overpowers his potential killer and rather than going to the moon, ends up hiding out in the present. With no way to time jump, the assassin must wait decades until he’s an old man at the time Hitler jumped to, teaming up with his now much-younger girlfriend to take down the Nazi leader.

DC Walker is on scripting duties, with the director aiming to start shooting next year.

Emily Browning Up For Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush

May 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Sucker Punch should have been a star-making turn for Emily Browning, but the film’s failure meant her performance got pretty much ignored. However she’s still around and will be seen this summer in Magic Mike. Now she’s in talks for a new role according to Variety, Plush, from director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Red Riding Hood).

Hardwicke and co-writer Artie Nelson have come up with the script about a psychologist who has an extra edge on helping his patients through their troubles. As well as being a therapist, he’s also a psychic and can dive into his clients’ minds and witness their memories, all the better to aid them in overcoming their personal demons. However, when he meets a traumatised teenager (Browning) who shares his gift, he seems to have met his match.

It’s a potentially interesting plot and something Browning should do well, who seems to specialise in innocents with a hard edge.
