Ellen Page Announces That She’s Married Girlfriend Emma Portner

January 4, 2018 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Juno, X-Men and Inception star Ellen Page is a married woman! The out and proud actress announced via social media that she’d tied the knot with her girlfriend – now wife – Emma Portner.

Alongside images of the couple of their hands complete with wedding rings, Page wrote on Instagram, ‘Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife. @emmaportner’.

No information has been released about the ceremony or when they swapped vows. That’s in keeping with a relationship where they’ve never hidden they were together, but haven’t gone out of their way to court publicity either. They have been seen together in public on various occassions though, such as at the premiere of Page’s film, Flatliners.

Portner is a New York based dancer and choreographer, who teaches at the Broadway Dance Center.

Congratulations to both of them! [Read more…]

Big Gay Picture Show’s Top 10 LGBT- Themed Films Of 2017

December 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s hard to believe that 2017 is coming to an end. Indeed, it’s somewhat hard to believe we managed to get through the year without the apocalypse happening, considering the likes of Trump and North Korea. Alongside the political tumult, there have been some great LGBT-films doing the rounds, and it’s time for us to round up what we think are our Top 10 of the year. There are certainly plenty of films below that are worth checking out.

To be in for consideration the film needed to be released in either the US or UK in 2017, or to have been seen by us in connection with a recognised film festival. It should also be noted it’s not based purely on the score out of 10 we gave the movie at the time we saw or reviewed it, but also how we view it in hindsight and whether it’s stuck with us over the months. So take a look below to see what we think is the best of 2017. [Read more…]

Gay-Themed God’s Own Country Wins Big At The British Independent Film Awards

December 11, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It may not have won the most awards, but the gay-themed Brit flick God’s Own Country picked up the big gong at the British Independent Film Awards. It picked up four awards, including the top prize, Best British Independent Film, along with Best Actor for Josh O’Connor, Best Debut Screenwriter for Francis Lee, and Best Sound.

The movie tells the story of the growing relationship between in isolated, young Yorkshire farmer, and the Romanian worker brought in to help him during the lambing season.

Lady MacBeth picked up the most awards overall though, with five, including Best Screenplay for Alice Birch, Best Actress for Florence Pugh and Most Promising Newcomer for Naomie Ackie. Armando Iannucci’s The Death of Stalin meanwhile picked up four awards. The only category of the night open to non-UK films, Best International Independent Film, was won by Get Out.

Although God’s Own Country is seen as an outsider for nominations in the major international film awards, it’s got a brace of gongs on the film festival circuit, including at Sundance and Berlin. It will also hopefully get some love at the BAFTA FIlm Awards.

Beach Rats (Cinema Review) – A teen struggles with masculinity & sexuality in the gay-themed movie

November 22, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Harris Dickinson, Madeline Weinstein, Kate Hodge, Neal Huff, Nicole Flyus
Director: Eliza Hittman
Running Time: 97 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: November 24th 2017 (UK)

With Call Me By Your Name, God’s Own Country and Beach Rats, 2017 may have been strongest year ever for gay-themed films at the Sundance Film Festival. The last of those, Beach Rats, took the Best Director (Dramatic) Award for director Eliza HIttman, and it’s also just been nominated for a couple of Independent Spirit Awards. The result is that it arrives in UK cinemas with quite a reputation. But does it deserve it?

The short answer is – yes.

It’s summer and Brooklyn teenager Frankie (Harris Dickinson) has nothing to do but hang out with his friends, heading down to the beach to flirt with girls, play ball and try to pass the time. However, away from his somewhat delinquent mates, he’s started going online and looking for guys. Initially he’s uncertain about what he’s doing or whether it means anything beyond being a way to pass the time, but he soon starts meeting men for sex. [Read more…]

First Look At Jude Law As Young Dumbledore As Fantastic Beasts 2 Gets A Name

November 16, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Press release: ‘Warner Bros. Pictures announces “FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD” as the title of the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™. Opening November 16, 2018, the film features an ensemble cast led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, with Jude Law and Johnny Depp.

‘At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

‘I’n an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

‘“FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD” is being directed by David Yates, from a screenplay by J.K. Rowling, and produced by David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram.

‘(Left to right) JUDE LAW plays a young ALBUS DUMBLEDORE, taking on the mantle of one of J.K. Rowling’s most beloved characters; EZRA MILLER makes a return as the enigmatic CREDENCE, whose fate was unknown at the end of the first film; CLAUDIA KIM appears as a Maledictus, the carrier of a blood curse that destines her ultimately to transform into a beast; ZOË KRAVITZ plays LETA LESTRANGE, who had once been close to Newt Scamander but is now engaged to his brother; CALLUM TURNER joins the cast as Newt’s older brother, THESEUS SCAMANDER, a celebrated war hero and the Head of the Auror Office at the British Ministry of Magic; KATHERINE WATERSTON returns as TINA GOLDSTEIN, who has been reinstated as an Auror for MACUSA; EDDIE REDMAYNE stars again as wizarding world Magizoologist NEWT SCAMANDER, who has now gained fame in the wizarding world as the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; DAN FOGLER reprises the role of the only No-Maj in the group, JACOB KOWALSKI; ALISON SUDOL reprises the part of Tina’s
free-spirited sister, QUEENIE GOLDSTEIN, a Legilimens who can read minds; and JOHNNY DEPP returns as the powerful Dark wizard GELLERT GRINDELWALD in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD.”” [Read more…]

Ezra Miller Says Of Coming Out As Queer, ‘I Was Told By a Lot of People I’d Made a Mistake’

November 8, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ezra Miller first came to many people’s attention as the teen title character in We Need to Talk About Kevin back in 2011. Then, going against the grain of most up and coming actors in Hollywood, he spoke to Out in 2012, saying “I’m Queer. I am very much in love with no one in particular.”

It hasn’t affected his career too much though, having starred in the likes of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower and Madame Bovary, before scoring a couple of massive roles that in 2016 saw him appearing as The Flash in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and as Credence Barebone in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

However, it appears some thought he’d ruined his chances of ever getting such high profile gigs when he came out. He told Shortlist recently, “I won’t specify, [but] I was told by a lot of people I’d made a mistake.

“Folks in the industry, folks outside of the industry. People I’ve never spoken to. They said there’s a reason so many gay, queer, gender-fluid people in Hollywood conceal their sexual identity, or their gender identity in their public image. I was told I had done a ‘silly’ thing in… thwarting my own potential to be a leading man.”

He adds, “I was given a lot of stern talking-tos.. ‘You’ve made a mistake’ is such a hard thing to hear. Maybe if I’d actually made a serious mistake? But not for this. I didn’t think I’d done anything wrong, though there have been moments of doubt as a result of those conversations. But… what they said was, in fact, ‘rubbish’, as you might say.”

Miller certainly doesn’t seem to be having any problems with his career. He’s about to appear in cinemas as The Flash once more in Justice League, and will play the character again in the standalone Flash movie, Flashpoint, in 2020. He’ll also return as Credence in the second Fantastic Beasts movie, which is due for release at the end of 2018.

Kevin Spacey Seeking ‘Treatment’ As Netflix Cuts Ties & More Sexual Harassment Claims Emerge

November 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Last week Kevin Spacey was named by Anthony Rapp as the man he said had tried to sleep with him when he was just 14 (Rapp had told the story year before to The Advocate, but the name of the older man was redacted). Spacey may have hoped that his subsequent ‘apology’ and coming out would minimise the impact on his career, but instead he has been hit with a firestorm of accusations and anger.

Many were furious that as part of his ‘apology’ he also came out as gay, which to many looked like an attempt to deflect attention from the allegations. He also gave a gift to homophobes by both equating homosexuality and pedophilia, and saying that he ‘chooses’ to live as a gay man.

He has also been hit with a multitude of other allegation, both from those who, like Rapp, say he targeted them while they were underage, and those who says he sexually harassed them when they were young men. London’s Old Vic Theatre, where Spacey was artistic director for a decade, has even set up a confidential phoneline for anyone those who wany support, against a background of stories that he sexually harassed many of the young actors who worked there.

Spacey himself has kept a low profile, with his only post ‘apology’ communication coming via his agents, who released a statement saying, ‘Kevin Spacey is taking the time necessary to seek evaluation and treatment. No other information is available at this time.’

The allegations came just as Spacey was starting to shoot Season 6 of House Of Cards. While there was already talk that this would mark the end of the show, Netflix has now confirmed that and also severed ties with the actor, saying “Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey.” Although they still hope to make a sixth season of the hit series, they will now look at ways of killing Spacey’s character off before filming restarts. They may cancel the series instead, and are said to be exploring the possibility of spin-offs. Netflix was also backing a Gore Vidal biopic staring Spacey, but that has also been cancelled.

Media Right Capital, the production company behind House Of Cards, is also looking at a series of allegation about inappropriate behaviour on the set of the award-winning show. They say, “While we continue the ongoing investigation into the serious allegations concerning Kevin Spacey’s behavior on the set of ‘House of Cards,’ he has been suspended, effective immediately. MRC, in partnership with Netflix, will continue to evaluate a creative path forward for the program during the hiatus.”

At the moment Spacey’s career is essentially dead, and it’s difficult to imagine there’s any way back for him. Indeed, with some of his accusers alleging serious crimes, he may be spending a lot of time in court.

Kevin Spacey Apologises & Comes Out After Anthony Rapp Alleges Inappropriate Conduct When He Was Underage

October 30, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Anthony Rapp in Rent (2005)

For decades rumours have swirled that Kevin Spacey was gay. Now that’s been confirmed, but in a way that has attracted fury from many. Spacey came out following allegations by actor Anthony Rapp that the double Oscar-winning actor made a sexual pass at him when Rapp was just 14-years-old.

Rapp says the event took place in 1986, when he was appearing on Broadway in Precious Sons, and Spacey had a supporting role in a revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. The young actor went to a party at Spacey’s house, where he soon discovered he didn’t know anyone else, and so ended up watching TV alone.

Talking to Buzzfeed, Rapp says it eventually got later than he’d realised, “My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody’s gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home.” Spacey, he recalled, “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk… He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me. He was trying to seduce me. I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

Eventually he managed to squirm away and get to the bathroom, “I was like, ‘What is happening?’ I saw on the counter next to the sink a picture of him having his arm around a man. So I think on some level I was like, Oh. He’s gay. I guess. Then I opened the door, and I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to go home now.’ He followed me to the front door of the apartment, and as I opened the door to leave, he was leaning on the front door[frame]. And he was like, ‘Are you sure you wanna go?’ I said, ‘Yes, good night,’ and then I did leave…

“My head was spinning. I have a memory of turning around and [thinking], What was that? What am I supposed to do with it? What does it mean?… The older I get, and the more I know, I feel very fortunate that something worse didn’t happen. And at the same time, the older I get, the more I can’t believe it. I could never imagine [that] anyone else I know would do something like that to a 14-year-old boy.”

After the Rent and Star Trek: Discovery actor stepped forward to talk about his experience and how it has affected him over the year, Spacey issued a response on Twitter: ‘I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.’

‘This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact I have been so protective of my privacy. As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and for me that starts by examining my own behavior.’

Many however were furious not just about what Spacey is said to have done to an underage boy, but also at the way his statement appears to be attempting to deflect criticism by coming out as gay. He appears with his statement to have tried to take some measure of responsibility by not denying the claim, however many have seen the second paragraph as an attempt to move the focus away from Rapp’s allegations and onto Spacey revealing he’s gay.

There have also been many who have found it extremely troubling and problematic that by talking about allegations of inapporiate conduct with someone who was underage in the context of him coming out, Spacey has conflated homosexuality with pedophilia –  a stereotype the gay community has been fighting for decades. As a result, many celebrities and others have taken Spacey to task not just for what he’s said to have done, but also for the way he responded.

GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis took to Twitter to say, ‘Coming out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault… This isn’t a coming out story about Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp & those who speak out about unwanted sexual advances. The media and public should not gloss over that.’

It has also been revealed that Spacey’s hit show, House Of Cards, will end after it’s upcoming sixth season. They also released a statement saying, “Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Zachary Quinto, who appeared alongside Spacey in the film Margin Call,  perhaps summed things up in the statement he released: ‘It is deeply sad and troubling that this is how Kevin Spacey has chosen to come out. Not by standing up as a point of pride – in the light of all his many awards and accomplishments – thus inspiring tens of thousands of struggling LGBTQ kids around the world, but as a calculated manipulation to deflect attention from the very serious accusation that he attempted to molest one.

‘I am sorry to hear of Anthony Rapp’s experience and subsequent suffering. And I am sorry that Kevin only saw fit to acknowledge his truth when he thought it could serve him – just as his denial served him for so many years. May Anthony Rapp’s voice be the only one which is amplified here. Victim’s voices are the ones that deserve to be heard.”
