George Takei Talks About Why He Waited Until Later Life To Come Out

December 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

george-takei-to-be-takeiIn the last few years George Takei has become one of the gay world’s elder statesmen, using his celebrity to speak out for equality and LGBT rights. It’s easy to forget therefore that it wasn’t until 2005 that he came out publicly, decades after he first found fame with Star Trek.

Takei is currently starring in the Broadway musical Allegiance, which is based on his own family’s experiences during World War II, where as Japanese-Americans they were put into internment camps. To tie in with that he’s been talking to SiriusXM Progress, where he addressed why he waited so long to come out, not just publicly but also to many who knew him intimately.

He says, “My father told me about American democracy. And he said you have to be actively engaged in the political process to make our democracy work. So I’ve been doing that my entire life. Civil rights movement. The peace movement during the Viet Nam conflict. The movement to get an apology and redress for Japanese-Americans. But I was silent on that one issue that was closest to me.”

He adds, “I wanted to be an actor. And if I wanted that career, I had to be closeted. Because when I was a teenager, there was a heartthrob named Tab Hunter. People today might not recognize that name. He was a blond, stunningly handsome boy next door. All American movie star guy. Every other movie coming from Warner Brothers studio starred Tab Hunter. But Confidential magazine exposed him as gay. And suddenly he faded.”

It seems his relationship with his father was instrumental in both his career and why he remained closeted. “I had convinced my father to let me pursue this career, and I passionately wanted it,” he says. “And here was this conflict in me and I hadn’t shared it with my father. And it was excruciating to always have your guard up. Particularly because being an actor you’re public and visible. I could be seen coming out of a gay bar. Who could have seen me?…So you’re always on guard. You’re always, you know, insecure. And that affected my life very much. And it was such a relief to be out and not be looking over your shoulder, tightly gripped all the time.”

First Look At Benedict Cumberbatch In Marvel’s Doctor Strange

December 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Doctor-Strange-ew2-slideMarvel’s stable of movie superheroes is due to grow over the next few years, and one of the first new characters to be introduced will be Doctor Strange, as played by Benedict Cumberbatch. EW has gotten hold of the first pics of Benedict in the role, where he’s certainly looking rather grandiose and dapper. There are also a couple of bits of concept art from the film.

Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics artist Steve Ditko created the character in 1963. Tilda Swinton will play Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, while Chiwetel Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under the Ancient One in the comic books, before becoming Doctor Strange’s nemesis. Mads Mikelsen is also onboard to play an as yet unnamed villain, who EW says, is ‘a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect… he believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.’

Scott Derrickson is directing the movie. It’ll be in cinemas November 2016. [Read more…]

Tom Hardy & Kenneth Branagh To Star In Christopher Nolan’s WWII Drama Dunkirk

December 28, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tom-Hardy

A couple of days ago rumours starting swirling that Christopher Nolan’s next movie would be about the epic evacuation of allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk during World War II. That’s now been confirmed, with THR adding that Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance and Kenneth Branagh are both in talks to star.

Nolan also wrote the screeplay and, as he did for his Dark Knight movies and Insterstellar, the director will shoot certain sequences in IMAX, this time using IMAX 65mm alongside 65mm large format film photography for the rest of the movie. However, as this is Nolan, there are no exact details on the plot, nor info on what roles Hardy and Branagh will be playing. It’s believed the rest of the cast will largely be unknowns.

Warner Bros. President Greg SIlverman commented, “We are thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Christopher Nolan, a singular filmmaker who has created some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time. Dunkirk is a gripping and powerful story and we are excited to see Chris, Emma and their cast realize it on the big screen.”

The Dunkirk evacuation ocurred in May 1940, when Belgian, British, and French soldiers in Northern France were cut off and surrounded by the German Army. It was a giant military disaster – something even Winston Churchill acknowledged in a speech in the House Of Commons – with hundreds of thousands of men trapped, with the German Army on one side and the sea on the other. A massive evacuation was put into operation, with Naval vessels joined by an armada of ‘little ships’, such as fishing boats, small ferries, tourist boats, lifeboats and merchant marine craft, which braved the seas and German guns in order to help rescue over 300,000 men.

The evacuation is one of the most incredible stories of the war – an event which could have allowed the Germans to win if the men had not been saved. Nolan’s movie will be released July 21st, 2017.

sam-heughan-cahonas-scotlandYes, that was a horribly manipulative click-bait type headline, but it’s kind of true, as Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser in the TV show Outlander, has narrated a new video which aims to get guys to check their testicles more often for abnormalities. Matt Dallas & Blue Hamilton Announce They’ve Adopted A 2-Year-Old Boy

December 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dallas-hamilton-matt-dallas-crow

A couple of weeks ago we posted the first few episodes of a new time-traveling web series starring Matt Dallas, but it turns out that what’s been going on in the actor’s personal life is more exciting that what’s been happening on screen. He and his husband, musician Blue Hamilton, have announced via a Youtube video that they have adopted an adorable two-year-old little boy.

In the vid they reveal that, “We’d been talking about having kids for a long time. It was just a matter of when, timing-wise and how.”

Of course, there were numerous options they could have gone with, from surrogancy to Madonna style overseas adoption, but they decided that with far too few homes available for the children that need them in their own US state of California, they would adopt a child there. The little boy they were paired up with is called Crow, and it appears it was a case of love at first sight between the men and their new son.

Hamilton says, “We just happen to fall in love with this certain little boy who came to stay with us… the car ride home, we decided that he was gonna be ours and we weren’t gonna give him up.”

A very happy Dallas adds, “There was supposed to be a six month trial period, and there was about a six-minute trial period before we knew he was gonna be ours.”

You can take a look at their very sweet and festive announcement video below. And good luck to all three of them. [Read more…]

Gay Rights Mini-Series From Gus Van Sant & Dustin Lance Black Gets The Greenlight

December 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dustin-lance-black-gus-van-sant

Sometimes in the world of entertainment things move very fast and other times they take a long time to get moving. It was around two and a half years ago that it was revealed that US TV network ABC was helping to develop a TV mini-series about the gay rights struggle, with Milk duo Dustin Lance Black and Gus Van Sant set to write and produce.

Now the eight-part show is finally moving forward, with THR reporting that ABC has given the series the greenlight, with Good Will Hunting and My Own Private Idaho’s Van Sant directing at least the first two-hour episode (as well as executive producing). The series, called When We Rise, is certainly ambitious, as it ‘chronicles the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today.’

There’s not too much further info about exactly what era(s) the show will cover or the characters it will feature. However, When We Rise is now heading towards production, and is expected to debut towards the end of next year.
