Steve Zahn Joins War For The Planet Of The Apes

October 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

steve-zahnDallas Buyers Club and You’ve Got Mail actor Steve Zahn is one of those people it feels should have broken out bigger, but never quite has. Now he’s scored a new role, but we’ll only sort of be seeing him in it.

THR reports he’ll don a motion capture suit to play an ape in War For The Planet Of The Apes. Andy Serkis will once more be ape leader Caesar, with Gabriel Chavarria and Woody Harrelson as the two human leads.

Not a vast amount is known about the movie, but returning director Matt Reeves has said, “As this story continues, we know that war is not avoided by the end of DAWN. That is going to take us into the world of what he is grappling with. Where he is going to be thrust into circumstances that he never, ever wanted to deal with, and was hoping he could avoid. And now he is right in the middle of it. The things that happen in that story test him in huge ways, in the ways in which his relationship with Koba haunts him deeply. It’s going to be an epic story. I think you’ve probably read that I sort of described it where in the first film was very much about his rise from humble beginnings to being a revolutionary. The second movie was about having to rise to the challenge of being a great leader in the most difficult of times. This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses.”

Boy Toys: Episode 1 – A new gay-themed web sitcom takes us into LA LGBT life

October 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-toys-ep1Normally web series barely manage to scrape together 10-minutes per episode, but Boy Toys jumps right in with a 30-minute opening instalment, with the promise of five more to come over the next few weeks.

The show is about LA go-go boy Ivan (played by Boy Toy co-creator Brian Jordan Alvarez), who just broekn up with his boyfriend and has a new roommate – an old high school friend called Frankie (co-creator Brad Wergley). It’s a completely new life for Frankie, not just because he knows nothing about big city LA life, but also because he’s only recently accepted that he’s gay.

Jimmy Fowlie – who’s probably best known for his own web series, Go-Go Boy Interrupted – also shows up, playing Ivan’s best friend.

It’s a tongue in cheek look at gay Los Angeles life, which could turn into quite a fun show.

Take a look at the first episode below. [Read more…]

Netflix’s Jessica Jones Will Feature The Marvel Screen Universe’s First Openly Gay Character

October 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jessica-jones-krysten-ritter-carrie-anne-mossDespite numerous films from Guardians Of The Galaxy to The Avengers, and TV series such as Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil, there’s one thing that’s been noticeably lacking in the interconnected Marvel Screen Universe – openly gay characters.

There was a small acknowledgement in an episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. where it was revealed that an extremely minor character had an ex-boyfriend, but that’s about it. However, that’s about to change as the first episode of Jessica Jones was screened at New York Comic Con over the weekend, which revealed that Carrie-Anne Moss’ recurring character, Jeri Hogarth, is a lesbian. The character was originally a man in the comics, but has been reimagined as a woman for the Netflix series.

In the episode Jeri is seen cheating on her female partner, suggesting she’s far from perfect, according to Vulture.

There are also hints that the titular Jessica may be sexually fluid, as its suggested in the opening episode that she may have previously had a relationship with a character called Trish (Rachael Taylor).

The show stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica, a former superhero who has reinvented herself as a private detective. Haunted by the tragedy of what happened when she was trying to be a hero, she tries to help people while also attempting to ensure she has enough cash to pay the rent. It’ll debut on Netflix on November 20th.

Ellen Page Gives Her Thoughts On Matt Damon’s Comments About Gay Actors

October 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ellen-pageMatt Damon’s poorly thought out comments about gay actors are still eliciting comment. He caused controversy after he said in an interview, “Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”

Although he clarified his comments, many felt he’d missed the point, as he seemed to fail to grasp that ackowledging your sexuality is something straight actors do as a matter of course, and that simply saying you’re gay isn’t revealing something that’s drastically different that should make any difference to what you should be able to play.

Ellen Page seems to agree with that assessment, telling Metro Weekly, “He doesn’t have a point because he related it to sexuality. Heterosexual actors and actresses do not have to go to great lengths to hide their sexuality. Yes, of course, keep your private life private. Protect yourself. Have boundaries. When you’re a public person, you need to think about your safety. But if it’s in relation to sexuality, then no — that’s an unfair double standard. Heterosexual people walk down the red carpet with their partners all the time, they talk about their children…”

However she does acknowledge it’s more difficult for gay actors currently, as if they take a same-sex partner it becomes ‘a thing’. She adds though, “I think that will change. And it’s going to continue to change the more people come out.”

Page was being interviewed about Freeheld, which is in cinemas soon.

Win The Trans-Themed TV Sitcom Boy Meets Girl On DVD!

October 12, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

boy-meets-girl-tv-dvd-coverThe transgender-themed comedy series Boy Meets Girl is released on DVD in the UK from October 12th, 2015, courtesy of RLJ Entertainment’s Acorn Label, and we’ve teamed up with them to give away two copies of the movie in this competition!

Leo (Harry Hepple – Holby City) is having a bad day. He’s been fired (again) and is being given a hard time about it by his Mum (Denise Welch – Waterloo Road). And then, to make matters worse, he ends up playing gooseberry to his younger brother on their night out together. Leo’s about to write the day off as one to forget but then he bumps into Judy (Rebecca Root – The Danish Girl) and finds himself deeply attracted to this surprising and beguiling woman.

They bond over drinks and, unfazed by the fact that there’s clearly a bit of an age gap between them, as well as the fact that Judy is transgender, they arrange to meet the following evening. Before long, they’re going steady, but family matters – Judy’s eccentric often embarrassing family and Leo’s possessive mother, ensure it’s not an easy ride.

Written by Elliott Kerrigan, winner of the Trans Comedy Award, a talent search run by BBC’s Writers Room, this extremely topical and heart-warming six-part comedy charts the burgeoning relationship between Leo and Judy.

To be in with a chance of winning one of the three copies of Boy Meets Girl on DVD that we’ve got to give away, answer the question below and fill in your details, then press submit! The competition closes on October 26th, 2015, so get answering and good luck. [Read more…]

Big Eden – 15th Anniversary Edition (US Blu-ray Review)

October 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Arye Gross, Eric Schweig, Tim DeKay, Louise Fletcher, George Coe
Director: Thomas Bezucha
Running Time: 118 mins
Certificate: PG-13
Release Date: October 13th 2015 (US)

Big Eden is a movie that was probably a few years ahead of its time. It’s a gay-themed film made in a mainstream style that’s sweet and charming, which you could imagine finding a measure of mainstream success. However, in 2000 it was perhaps a little early for that.

It did find plenty of love from those who saw it though, which has ensured that it’s now getting a 15th Anniversary re-release.

The film is about Henry Hart (Arye Gross), a man who left his small, Montana hometown – the titular Big Eden – after high school and rarely looked back, becoming a successful artist in New York. However, he is called back to Big Eden after his grandfather (George Coe), has a stroke. Henry is happy being openly gay in the big city, but he’s never told the folks back home about that side of his life, and isn’t sure whether he can. [Read more…]

Boy Meets Girl (2015) (DVD Review)

October 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Rebecca Root, Harry Hepple, Denise Welch, Jonny Dixon, Nigel Betts
Director: Paul Norton Walker
Running Time: 180 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 12th 2015 (UK)

Leo (Harry Hepple) is a young man in his mid-20s who isn’t exactly good at romance and dating. Then he meets Judy (Rebecca Root) and there’s an immediate spark, so he decides to invite her out on a date. Once they’re at a restaurant she lets him know that she is transgender, something Leo doesn’t seem too bothered about (although it does cause a few ripples later on).

They both know that while neither of them care, the same won’t necessarily be true of everyone, and they may also have a few other obstacles to overcome on the way to true love. However, the thing that most people want to comment on when they initially see Judy is the age gap between her and Leo, as she is nearing 40.

Across the course of six episodes Boy Meets Girl charts their relationship, as they negotiate the issues of transgender dating, from when to tell his family, to dealing with sex, as well as the viciousness of transphobic people. [Read more…]
