LGBT-Themed Movie That’s Not Us Seeks Post-Production Funding To Get It To The Screen

February 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

that's-not-us-slideThe queer-themed movie That’s Not Us is nearly at the finish line. The improvised romantic comedy is in the can, but still needs a bit of help with post-production funding to get it finished. It’s now launched a Seed And Spark campaign to help cover the costs, with just a few days left to hit its target.

The film follows three couple – one lesbian, one straight and one gay – who arrive ‘on Fire Island to spend a September beach weekend together. As soon as they get off the ferry, they are in a different world: a place where wagons and bikes are the only form of transportation, and the local population has dwindled down to the last few trying extend those final days of summer.

‘The time off from the real world only seems to bring out the truth. Alex misses having sex with her girlfriend – is it because they’re moving in different directions? Can they find the place where they intersect again? Spencer’s dilemma calls the future into question. At what point do you commit to a person for the possibility of forever? How can you be sure? Dougie and Liz probe one another’s vulnerability. What is the difference between being with a person and knowing a person?’

Executive producer Mark Berger told Huffpo of the movie that, “The filmmaking couple behind the story, William Sullivan (director) and Derek Dodge (DP), wanted to reflect their own experiences of being in a committed relationship. While we all have different experiences with love, they felt like they weren’t seeing a lot of gay couples in film and TV that they could necessarily identify with. Making love last in today’s world isn’t easy. All relationships have challenging moments when you have to choose between staying put and walking away. Those are the moments where we show our vulnerabilities, and where these characters truly reveal themselves.”

The hope is that That’s Not Us will be finished in a few months time before heading to festivals later this years and then onto video on demand. If you’d like to find out more and perhaps give some cash, watch the crowdfunding video below and then head over to Seed and Spark. [Read more…]

Did Oscar Host Neil Patrick Harris Stuff His Tightey-Whiteys?

February 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harris-oscars-underwearPerhaps the most memorable moment of the Oscar ceremony was when a nicely buff Neil Patrick Harris re-enaced a scene from Birdman, stripping down to his underwear, wandering around backstage before appearing in a state of undress in front of the star-packed audience.

However from the moment it happened there were some wondering if he’d had some padding assistance, as he certainly didn’t seem lacking in the crotch department.

It hasn’t taken long though for Neil to step forward and defend his package, telling Live! With Kelly and Michael about how that skit came to happen. He said, “No enhancements, but I’ll tell you what happened. They always want you to be in funny costumes as the host… I’m not one for crazy costumes. I don’t love it, but the Birdman bit seemed funny, and so we thought it’d be a fun thing to do, and it seemed appropriate at the time.

“So we did the dress rehearsal, and I just had the pair of regular underwear on,” he continued. “But the lights! They see through things! So the Academy or the network or someone said we had to do something so you couldn’t tell my religion. So what they did was they had to take a second pair and sew it to the first to make it so that you couldn’t sort of see through it.

“But, no sock!”

So I suppose it was sort of padded, but not in the way we might expect. And for those still thinking there might have been a sock down there, you just have to remember that if you’re as skinny as NPH, it’s not too surprising it sticks out more.

You can take a look at Neil in his tighties and giving his explanation below. [Read more…]

Imitation Game Director Defends The Film’s Lack Of Gay Sex

February 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-slideJust about everyone else involved with The Imitation Game has stepped up defend the fact it’s about a gay person but doesn’t portray its main subject as being particularly gay. While it doesn’t pretend Alan Turing was straight, in the movie he doesn’t have any sex and the only relationship we’re shown is a schoolboy infatuation.

Now it’s the turn of director Morten Tyldum to defends the lack of a gay relationship to Variety saying, “First of all, the time period we’re all focusing on, he didn’t have one. He described it in his own words as a ‘sexual desert’ in a letter. The whole thing is his relationship with Christopher [Turing’s male crush seen in flashbacks in grade school], about unfulfilled love.”

When pressed about the fact Turing did have relationships with men in real life, Morten says says, “He had people he had sex with, yes — especially in the time after the war, when he’s living in Manchester. The break-in that happens in the film is a male lover, which is discussed. It was actually someone he paid to have sex with. It was more of a hustler.”

Tyldum also says he doesn’t gay relationship and sex it would have enriched the film, adding, “The whole movie, the way it’s structured, we don’t know anything about this man. The whole investigation starts because he’s hiding something, but he’s not hiding what we think. It can’t start off with him having sex. It was not because we were afraid it would offend anybody. If I did the structure and had this thing about a straight character, I would never have a sex scene to prove that he’s heterosexual. If I have a gay character in a movie, I need to have a sex scene in it — just to prove that he’s gay? I’m not shying away from it. His whole relationship, how he falls in love and the importance of him being a gay man, was all about secrecy.”

However, rather like previous defenders such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Matthew Goode, Tyldum seems to acquaint showing someone being a fully gay person with filming them in bed with another man. What none on the defences have addressed is that most of the criticism is that some believe the movie presents Turing’s sexuality in a perfunctory way as a small adjunct to his personality, rather than as a key part of who he is. And seeing as he has increasingly become iconic for many LGBT people, they view this as a major problem with the film.

That said, it’s not like the movie pretends that he’s straight, so perhaps Tyldum has a clumsy point.

Nicolas Cage Joins Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden Biopic

February 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

nicolas-cageOliver Stone is bringing together a great cast for his planned biopic of Edward Snowden. Joseph Gordon Levitt is taking the lead role, with Shailene Woodley, Scott Eastwood, Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo, Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson, and Tom Wilkinson also onboard.

Now THR reports that Cage has joined the movie, playing a former U.S. Intelligence official, although it’s not clear exactly which one he will be.

Oliver Stone will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald (The Homesman), which will look at Snowden, the infamous NSA operative who leaked thousands of highly sensitive government papers, causing great controversy and revealing a cache of hidden information. It made him a hero to some and a pariah to others.

As well as Snowden himself the film will cover the others involved, such as the people who helped Edward get the documents into the public domain, including Laura Poitras, who won an Oscar yesterday for her Snowden documentary Citizenfour (and will be played by Melissa Leo in the movie).

Stone’s biopic should start shooting soon.

Effie Gray is a genuinely fascinating character and one day there will be a brilliant film made about her, but despite vast amounts of effort and some interesting touches, this movie isn’t it.

Birdman Takes Best Picture At The Oscars, With Only One Win For Imitation Game

February 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

neil-patrick-harris-oscars-underwearIn the last few weeks many thought Boyhood had overtaken Birdman as this year’s Best Picture Oscar frontrunner, but in the end it was the latter that took to the podium at the end of ceremony, with Alejandro González Iñárritu also winning Best Director.

However everything didn’t go to Birdman, as while it took two other prizes, it actually tied for most wins with The Grand Budapest Hotel, which took Best Makeup, Best Production Design, Best Costume and Best Original Score.

On the acting front, while a few months ago many critics had already pretty much given the award to Michael Keaton for Best Actor, it was actually Eddie Redmayne who won for The Theory Of Everything. Julianne Moore won Best Actress for Still Alice, while both supporting acting awards went to the frontrunners, Patricia Arquette for Boyhood and J.K. Simmons for Whiplash.

The ceremony itself was ok, although Neil Patrick Harris struggled after a rousing opening, largely due to weak writing. It’s a shame as NPH himself was good, but he had little to work with in a job that’s thankless at the best of times.

It was also up to NPH to largely hold the fort for the gays, as while we normally make a strong showing, amongst the nominees it was only The Imitation Game that had any chance of winning. Many had thought that despite eight noms it wouldn’t win anything, but it did manage to pick up Best Adapted Screenplay for Graham Moore. The writer gave what was probably the most moving speech of the evening, saying “I tried to commit suicide at 16 and now I’m standing here. I would like for this moment to be for that kid out there who feels like she doesn’t fit in anywhere. You do. Stay weird. Stay different, and then when it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage please pass the same message along.”

Oh and if you’re wondering why NPH is in his undies in the pic above, it’s not because the show was going so badly he decided to try stripping, he was re-enacting a scene from Birdman – and looking fine while doing it.

Take a look below for the full list of Oscar winners. [Read more…]

‘You Can’t Curry Love’ follows a young Anglo-Asian man who goes on a business trip to India and ends up falling for a local man while immersing himself in the local culture, both LGBT and otherwise. The Last Straight Man (DVD Review)

February 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac 5 Comments

Starring: Mark Cirillo, Scott Sell
Director: Mark Bessenger
Running Time: 110 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: February 23rd 2015 (UK), February 24th 2015 (US)

I have to say when I read the synopsis for The Last Straight Man I was a little concerned. It all seemed a tad gimmicky, with the kind of ambition that few low-budget, gay-themed movies can live up to. Thankfully though I was pleasantly surprised when I actually saw the movie.

There aren’t many gay films that open with a scene in which a female stripper is dancing for a bunch of guys – indeed you’d think it was anathema for this type of flick – but it’s Cooper’s (Scott Sell) bachelor party and so strippers are the order of the day. At the end of the evening Cooper is left with his best friend Lewis (Mark Cirillo), talking about their lives and loves – however Cooper doesn’t know Lewis is bisexual (on his way to accepting he’s gay), and when he admits that fact, Lewis is pleased that Cooper is surprised but not horrified. Chatting With Last Straight Man Director Mark Bessenger About Male Nudity & Gay Double Standards

February 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Mark Cirillo in The Last Straight Man

Mark Cirillo in The Last Straight Man

Two best friends – one straight, one bisexual/gay – hook up just before the straight guy gets married. It’s the start of a decade long affair where the guys meet for one night a year to have sex, catch up and let loose. However what should be a secret but simple bit of fun soon becomes something more complicated for both of them.

That’s the set-up for writer/director Mark Bessenger’s The Last Straight Man, which shows us five of the mens’ trysts over a 12-year period. With the film coming to DVD (it’s out this week in both the US and UK), we took the opportunity to chat to Bessenger about his movie, how the actors dealt with the sex and nudity, and whether gay people have a double standard about ‘straight’ men having same sex affairs. Gay Short Film Showcase: Grinders – Why are gay people and skateboarders the same?

February 22, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

grinder-short-filmGrinders is ‘a fake trailer that explores the world’s perception of skateboarders. For many people in the “real world”, a skateboard is nothing but a useless wooden toy, something that gets thrown away when you grow up. This film is for the misunderstood people who never threw it away.’

And in the process of showing that, it offers a great analogy to being gay, feeling the need to hide their desires – as well as hang out in toilet cubicles with other guys – so take a look at it below.

The film won the top prize (Best Overall) for Converse and Kingshit Magazine’s “Connect the Dots” 2014 competition, which gives 10 skaters/filmers have 30 days to film a 5 minute creative film, as well as submit 10 photos to Kingshit Magazine. [Read more…]
