While staying in the home of Lord Byron at Lake Geneva, the guests are challenged to write a ghost story, which leads Mary to conceive her novel “Frankenstein.”’

Ellen Fanning stars as the young Mary, who wrote Frankenstein when she still in her teens. Maisie Williams, Douglas Booth, Stephen Dillanem, Tom Sturridge, Ben Hardy and Hugh O’Conor also star in the film.

Journey’s End Trailer – Sam Claflin & Asa Butterfield star in the classic World War I tale

October 23, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Synopsis: ‘Based on RC Sherriff’s play and novel of the same name JOURNEY’S END is set in March 1918 as C-Company, led by a war-weary Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin) arrives in northern France to take its turn in the front-line trenches. Told that a German offensive is imminent Stanhope drowns his fears in whisky whilst the officers (Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, Tom Sturridge) and their cook (Toby Jones) attempt to distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and life before war.

‘They are joined by Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), a young new officer fresh out of training excited about his first real posting, and a chance to serve under Stanhope. Raleigh’s naivety serves as a stark contrast to the other men’s impending fear as the tension rises and the attack draws ever closer.’

Saul Dibb (Suite Française, The Duchess) directs the movie, which will arrive in UK cinemas February 2nd 2018. Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

Effie Gray (DVD Review)

February 23, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Dakota Fanning, Greg Wise, Emma Thompson, Tom Sturridge, Julie Walters
Director: Richard Laxton
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: February 23rd 2015

Effie Gray is a genuinely fascinating character and one day there will be a brilliant film made about her, but despite vast amounts of effort and some interesting touches, this movie isn’t it.

At 19-years-old Effie (Dakota Fanning) marries the older John Ruskin (Greg Wise), a prominent art critic who’s seen as a very good match. However soon after the wedding problems begin to appear, as while she wishes to be a proper wife, John controlling parents (Julie Walters and David Suchet) prevent her from helping her husband with his domestic affairs, and he himself refuses to consummate their marriage. Far From The Madding Crowd Trailer – Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts & Tom Sturridge star

February 18, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

far-from-the-madding-crowd-slideFar From The Madding Crowd may be one of Thomas Hardy’s classics, but due to having to study it at school, I have a rather great dislike for it. However even so, the new film version Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge doesn’t look too bad.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.’

The film is due out in the UK on May 1st, so should provide a bit of respite from the summer blockbuster overload. [Read more…]

Far From The Madding Crowd Teaser Trailer – Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts and Tom Sturridge take on Thomas Hardy

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

far-from-the-madding-crowd-poster1Having been forced to study it at school, I have an irrational hatred of Far From The Madding Crowd, but hopefully this new film version won’t be as tedious as the book (the 1967 movie with Julie Christie and Terence Stamp wasn’t bad, so there is hope).

This new take from director Thomas Vinterberg stars Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge, and now the first teaser trailer and poster have arrived.

It’ll be out in cinemas next Spring. [Read more…]

Effie Gray Trailer – Dakota Fanning & Emma Thompson take on a fascinating Victorian tale

September 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

effie-grey-posterWhile we’ve been waiting for Effie Gray for quite a while, the movie based on the intriguing tale of the titular character and her marriage to prominent art critic John Ruskin is now on its way and the trailer has arrived.

Written by Emma Thompson, Effie Gray (Dakota Fanning) is a young woman who as a teenager marries the far older John Ruskin (David Suchet), a man who is at the top of the art world and moved in his circles. However it’s not a happy marriage and is never consummated.

Effie ends up becoming the muse and lover of pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge), and ends up causing a sensation when she becomes one of the first women to petition for a divorce (technically an annulment due to the fact she never had sex with Ruskin).

A probably apocryphal legend says Ruskin refused to have sex with Effie due to his disgust at her pubic hair, although it’s not clear if this will be reflected in the movie.

The film is due for release in the UK on October 10th. [Read more…]

First Pics Of Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenarts & Tom Sturridge In Far From The Madding Crowd

November 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

far-from-the-madding-crowd-pic3A new film version of Thomas Hardy’s classic Far From The Madding Crowd has recently been shooting, and now the first images have arrived, showing off Carey Mulligan,  Matthias Schoenarts and Tom Sturridge.

David Nicholls wrote the screenplay which is about headstrong farmer’s daughter Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), and her tumultuous love life, who must choose between three very different suitors, which involves a shepherd (Matthias Schoenarts) she initially dismisses, a dashing but duplicitous soldier (Tom Sturridge), and a farm owner.

Thomas Vinterberg directs, with the movie expected in cinemas next year.

Tom Sturridge Joins Carey Mulligan In Far From The Madding Crowd

July 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tom-sturridgeFesten director Thomas Vinterberg has been planning a new version of Far From The Madding Crowd for quite a while now. He’s already lined up Carey Mulligan and Matthias Schoenaerts to star, and now Deadline reports they’ve been joined by Tom Sturridge (On the Road, The Boat that Rocked), who’s currently hot after a Tony-nominated run on Broadway in Orphans.

David Nicholls is writing the screenplay which is about headstrong farmer’s daughter Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan), and her tumultuous love life, who must choose between three very different suitors, which involves a shepherd she initially dismisses, a dashing but duplicitous soldier, and a farm owner.

Athough Deadline say exactly which of those suitors Sturridge will play, we’re betting he’ll be the seemingly exciting Sergeant Frank Troy, who isn’t all he promises to be.

On The Road (Blu-ray)

February 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Tom Sturridge, Viggo Mortensen
Director: Walter Salles
Running Time: 124 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 25th 2013

It’s taken a long, long time to get On The Road onto the screen. Francis Ford Coppola bought the rights in 1979 (and that’s ignoring even earlier attempts, some involving Jack Kerouac himself) and has been trying to make it ever since. He’s still involved as a producer, but it’s Walter Salles in the director’s chair, who’s previously brought us the likes of The Motorcycle Diaries and Central Station. [Read more…]
