Out Smart Short Film – What if you had to come out as being intelligent?

October 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Out-Smart-slideThere have been a few short films that have replaced coming out as gay with having to come out as something else (usually as straight), as a way of highlighting how the questions people ask and the issues that it often raises are ridiculous.

Out Smart does a similar thing, with it’s premise seeing a young man having to come out as intelligent. It’s a neatly to make the point that many people’s reactions are absolutely predicated on the idea that being gay is a bad thing (as well as to subtly position those who have a problem with gay people as being intrinsically dumb).

Director Dawn Cobalt comments, ‘When I first came out, it was the scariest thing I ever had to do. And I realized that, as I kept meeting new people, I would forever be coming out. I would also forever be coming out to people from my past who didn’t know me as out. They would wonder, “Why didn’t she just tell me?” So this film is very special to me.

‘I had to make this film to express that experience – and add humor to a very tough confession to make to anyone. Everyone is different in his or her own way and society tries to decide what is normal and what is not. We have all been in a situation where you want to tell people something that is out of the “norm” and hope that they still accept and love you.’

It’s been screened at numerous film festivals and won several awards, as well as being screened at numerous PFLAG meetings across the US. And you can take a look at it below. [Read more…]

The Dark Place Trailer – A young man’s life is at stake in the gay-themed thriller

October 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dark-place-dvd-cover-slideIn the last few years there’s been a concerted effort to expand gay-themed film from the realms of drama and comedy. That continues with the thriller The Dark Place, which has been finding success of the LGBT film festival circuit and will be heading to DVD and VOD in the US on December 2nd, 2014.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Long estranges from his widowed mother, Keegan Dark is blessed with the uncanny ability to remember his life in videographic detail. And cursed by it as well — he’s unable to forget any of his life’s numerous tragedies. He returns, boyfriend in tow, to his family’s vineyard estate to finally make amends, and is shocked to discover that his mother has remarried. He suddenly has a stepfather and stepbrother, both far more perfect than he could ever hope to be.

‘As Keegan resigns himself to forever being on the outs, a series of mysterious – and ominous – events unfold, forcing Keegan to unravel a conspiracy that frames him for murder, threatens his inheritance, and endangers his family’s lives and livelihood.’

The film’s cast includes Blaise Embry as Keegan Dark, Timo Descamps as Wil Roelen and Sean Paul Lockhart as Jake Bishop.

Oculus (Blu-ray Review)

October 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Katee Sackhoff, Rory Cochrane
Director: Mike Flanagan
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: October 20th 2014 (UK)

Tim (Brenton Thwaites) is just out of the mental institution where he’s spent most of his childhood after being blamed for the brutal death of his parents. However, while his sister Kaylie (Karen Gillan) was bounced around the foster system, she held tight to the idea that Tim wasn’t really responsible – it was the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror she is convinced has supernatural powers and which destroyed her family.

She now has possession of the Lasser Glass and takes Tim back to their old house where she has set up cameras and alarms which she believes can prove that the mirror is evil. However she may have underestimated its power, as while Tim is initially convinced his sister is just trying to deny what he did (as his psychologists have made him take responsibility), strange things start happening where neither of them can trust what they’re seeing. Walking On Sunshine (DVD Review)

October 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Hannah Arterton, Annabel Scholey, Giulo Berruti, Katy Brand, Greg Wise
Director: Max Giwa, Dania Pasquini
Running Time: 96 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: October 20th 2014 (UK)

The musical Walking On Sunshine is undoubtedly a bizarre proposition. There’s virtually no part of it that doesn’t seem ill-judged and pretty bizarre, yet after 90 minutes of what feels like someone screaming in your face ‘HAVE A NICE TIME!’, it’s difficult not to succumb to a severe case of Stockholm Syndrome and submit (while hating yourself for it).

Walking On Sunshine was always going to have a difficult time from the moment that it decided that it was going to have as little plot as possible, but what it would have would revolve you hoping that one sister would be able to steal the other’s fiancé before the credits roll. That’s a tough sell in a drama, let alone a movie that’s essentially an excuse to string together a series of 80s pop songs. [Read more…]

Eternity: The Movie (US Cinema Review)

October 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Barrett Crake, Myko Olivier, Eric Roberts, Nikki Leonti, John Gries
Director: Ian Thorpe
Running Time: 88 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: October 17th 2014 (US)

Is Eternity: The Movie a gay film? Well, yes, except no. It manages to straddle a hitherto unknown line where it’s a celebration of bromance, but yet has no bones about being a gay love affair in all but name. There’s little ‘no homo’ here, just two characters who are too clueless to know that’s what they would probably say if set if this was set in the 2010s.

The film is a parody of the 80s, filled with as much innuendo as it’s possible to cram into 88 minutes. Todd (Barrett Crake) is freshly arrived in LA with dreams of making it big in music – as well as selling affordable fashions at everyday prices at BJ Maxx (see, we told you it liked innuendo). He meets fellow ‘glamorist’ B.J. Fairchild (Myko Olivier) and while they don’t initially hit it off, they soon realise that with B.J.’s saxophone skills and Todd’s vocals – and his talent at writing songs about heartbreak – they could make it as a big-haired 80s pop duo. Last Summer Trailer – Two gay teens contemplate their future in the rural US south

October 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

last-summer-slideLast Summer has been getting great reviews from film festival screenings with tale of two young gay men figuring themselves and the world around them out. You can take a look at the trailer below, ahead of its December US release.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Last Summer tells the story of two high school sweethearts, Luke and Jonah, who spend their final months together over the course of a long, quiet summer in the rural South, contemplating their uncertain future and the uncertain future of America.

‘Jonah, sensitive, quiet and artistic, prepares to leave his small town for college, leaving Luke behind, but all he wants is for Luke to ask him to stay. But Luke, an athlete struggling through summer school, knows that his boyfriend needs to experience the world beyond their home. Though he is somewhat aimless and unsure of his place in the world, he begins to find solace in an old camera that he finds in an antique store.

‘Last Summer positions their love story against a world of baseball fields, bicycles, church, and seemingly conservative values, though the boys never face adversity from their community; instead, they fit directly into the fabric of their all-American town.’ [Read more…]

Old Dogs & New Tricks Season 3 Trailer – The gay-themed web series is back in November

October 18, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

old-dogs-new-tricks-s3The WeHo escapades of middle-aged gay best buds Nathan, Brad, Ross & Muscles continue beginning Nov. 12, 2014, when popular gay web series Old Dogs & New Tricks returns for its long-awaited third season.

The season premiere picks up one week after the events of the show’s recent Halloween-set “mini-movie” WeHo Horror Story, with Nathan reeling from Damian’s disappearance and Ross preparing for his impending gay divorce. But this year, the show expands its scope:

“We still see the guys’ romantic misadventures,” explains show creator/writer/star Leon Acord. “But this year, we also see more of their successes and mistakes in their professional lives.  We may have fewer sex scenes this year, but the ones we have are more outrageous than ever–including the show’s first bare ass!”

The new season also features guest-star appearances from Rutanya Alda (Mommie Dearest), who plays Nelson Van Eddy’s haughty personal assistant Barbara Fierce in four episodes. Mo Gaffney (Absolutely Fabulous) appears in the season premiere as Ross’ divorce attorney, while Kathryn Leigh Scott (Dark Shadows) plays Muscles’ mom, Lily Anne, in the season finale. Jim J. Bullock (Too Close for Comfort) makes a cameo as Nathan’s latest celebrity-quack therapist.

The entire principal cast returns for the new season. Besides Acord as neurotic talent agent Nathan, the show stars Curt Bonnem as hedonistic Brad, Jeffrey Patrick Olson as wholesome Muscles, David Pevsner as struggling actor Ross & Amanda Gari (in an expanded role) as Nathan’s wise-cracking “girl-Friday” Lydia Lasker.  Bruce L. Hart appears in three episodes as resident villain Nelson, as does Parnell Damone Marcano as Ross’ estranged spouse Neal.

New episodes debut each subsequent Wednesday at www.OldDogsNewTricksTheSeries.com and the show’s YouTube channel (youtube/OldDogsTheSeries).

“I’m very proud of this season,” says Acord, “Our cast and crew all brought their A-game, and it shows. I can honestly say its our best yet. I can’t wait to see what our viewers think!

Take a look at the trailer for the new season below. [Read more…]
