Leonardo DiCaprio Heads Into The Wild For American Wolf

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

leonardo-dicaprioLeonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way production company are heading into the wild by snapping up the rights to an upcoming book about a wolf that charmed people around the world. It’s a fitting deal in the same week that Leo gave a speech at the UN where he championed the environment.

The book deal was only signed a few days ago, and Hollywood was quick to jump in score the film rights, with THR reporting that the likes of New Regency and Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers also bidding. It’s Leo who won out though.

The book in question is Nate Blakeslee’s American Wold, which ‘tells the story of O-Six, who in some circles was the world’s most famous wild animal. The female alpha wolf was collared and tracked by researchers at Yellowstone National Park, gaining a huge following from not only scientists but the public as well. She was shot by a hunter in 2012 just outside the park’s boundaries, an act that caused howls around the country (she even got an obituary in The New York Times) despite it being legal — wolves were scaled back from endangered species’ lists, so there were new population control measures in place.

‘Blakeslee, a senior editor at Texas Monthly, focused on O-Six (named after the year she was born) and the impact she had on the humans around her, as well as the wolf watchers and nature aficionado who symbolized the conservation movement’s success, and the hunter, a vilified man who remains unnamed to this day.’

It doesn’t sound like it’ll be a very cheery tale, but it could make for an interesting film.

New Predestination Trailer – Ethan Hawke turns time-travelling detective

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

predestination-ethan-hawkePredestination looks like it could be yet another Ethan Hawke movie that’s surprisingly watchable and could do good business, but which probably won’t see him rise back up the star tree. It sees him reunite with Daybreakers directors Michael and Peter Spierig for a time travel tale.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Predestination chronicles the life of a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke) sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to ensure the continuation of his law enforcement career for all eternity. Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time.’

It’s based on a 1959 short story called All You Zombies by Starship Troopers writer Robert A. Heinlein. No US or UK release date is currently set. [Read more…]

New Jupiter Ascending Trailer – Fresh look at Channing Tatum & Mila Kunis in the Wachowski’s epic sci-fi

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jupiter-ascending-poster1-slideIt didn’t bode well when the release date for the Wachowskis Jupiter Ascending was moved back from summer 2014 to February 2015, but there’s no doubt the trailers look cool – rather weird, but cool.

Now another one has arrived, giving us our best look yet at the scope of the sci-fi saga – as well as Channing Tatum and his pointy ears.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix).

‘Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.’ [Read more…]

Stretch Trailer – Patrick Wilson & Joe Carnahan go to strange places in a limo

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

stretch-pic5-slideA couple of weeks ago the first rather unusual pictures emerged from Stretch, a movie that looks rather intriguing and had stars such as Patrick Wilson, Chris Pine, Jessica Alba, Ed Helms, Brooklyn Decker, James Badge Dale, David Hasselhoff, Ray Liotta, and Shaun Toub.

Even with all that going for it, Joe Carnahan’s won’t be getting a US cinema release, instead it’ll be going digital on Amazon and iTunes on October 7th, with a VOD release coming on October 14th.

Wilson plays the central role of a downtrodden man who takes a job as a limo driver to pay off his gambling debts. His first client is an eccentric billionaire (Chris Pine), whose bizarre requests take a toll on the driver’s sanity throughout one crazy night.

Take a look at the trailer below.

Blackhat Trailer – Chris Hemsworth stars in Michael Mann’s thriller

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

blackhat-slideThe first trailer has arrived for Michael Mann’s first film since 2009’s Public Enemies, the rather dully titled Blackhat, starring Chris Hemsworth.

Here’s the synopsis: Set within the world of global cybercrime, Legendary’s Blackhat follows a furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.

‘Directed and produced by Michael Mann, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Tang Wei and Wang Leehom, and it is written by Morgan Davis Foehl and Mann. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni produce alongside Mann, while Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod serve as the executive producers.’

It’s due out in the UK on February 20th, 2015. [Read more…]

Benedict Cumberbatch Gets His Own Imitation Game Poster

September 26, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-poster2It’s less than two weeks until the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game kicks off the BFI London Film Festival, and it’s not long after that that it will arrive in UK cinemas on November 14th.

Ahead of that comes a new poster. Unlike the last time, where Benedict Cumberbatch had his back to us, this one focuses on him completely.

And let’s just ignore the rather cheesy ‘Behind Every Code Is An Enigma’ strapline.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘THE IMITATION GAME is a nail-biting race against time following Alan Turing (pioneer of modern-day computing and credited with cracking the German Enigma code) and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of World War II. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British establishment, but his work and legacy live on.’

And yes, like every other mainstream movie about an LGBT subject, what that synopsis is skirting around is that Turing was gay, something the movie itself apparently doesn’t mince words about.

Lena Dunham Producing Documentary About Tailor Specialising In The LGBTQ Community

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

lena-dunhamGirls creator Lena Dunham has long set out her LGBT-ally credentials, including saying she won’t marry her boyfriend until same-sex marriage is legal across the US. Now she’s putting her name and her production company behind a documentary called Three Suits, about a New York tailors that specialises in serving the LGBTQ community.

According to Vanity Fair the doc, about Bindle & Keep, will focus on several of the company’s transgender clients as they have custom suits made, with tailors and the customer coming together to create bespoke clothing perfect to fit each person’s gender identity and expression.

While the staff is largely straight, Bindle & Keep was specifically founded to help those underserved by the fashion industry, which has led them to such things as making clothes for gay weddings and for members of the Orange Is the New Black cast.

To add a little bit of extra interest is the history of the company itself. It was founded by Daniel Friedman, who was ‘An architect who seven years ago suddenly and mysteriously lost the ability to read and write, Friedman found himself unable to find gainful employment. Desperate, he worked toward developing his hand and visual skills, and used them to start making custom clothing. Only recently did he find an explanation. While casually repeating his story during a fitting, a customer burst out a possible diagnosis, “Daniel, you’ve got Lyme disease.”

‘He was right: a severe late-stage form of the tick-borne disease had left Friedman’s untreated brain in peril. The story highlights the extraordinary connection the label maintains with its clients.’

Once complete, the documentary will air on HBO in the US.

New Ouija Trailer – Fresh look at the creepy spirit board movie

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ouija-2014Ouija has been on quite a journey to the screen. It’s been around five years since the idea was first mooted, and in that’s time it’s been planned as a full-on gore-fest, a mega-budget tentpole release and a family friendly adventure film, but it’s finally becomes creep-fest that’s more aimed towards teens and with a relatively modest budget.

If you didn’t know, the reason so much effort went into making a Ouija film is that it was part of Universal’s deal with Hasbro, as it’s the toy company that actually owns the rights to that particular spirit board, which was invented in the late 1800s in the US. (There’s some suspicion Hasbro particularly wanted the movie to help them assert their rights to the Ouija name going into the future).

Here’s the film version’s synopsis: ‘In Ouija, a group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. Stiles White directs the supernatural thriller that is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller (The Purge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) alongside Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series, The Purge), Bennett Schneir (Battleship) and Hasbro. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White wrote the script for Ouija, and Universal will distribute the film worldwide.’

You won’t be surprised to hear it’s heading for a Halloween release. [Read more…]

Matthew McConaughey, Chris Nolan & Co. Get New Interstellar Pics

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

interstellar-empire-pic1The marketing for Interstellar has certainly kicked up a gear in the last few weeks with new posters and trailers, and now Empire has debuted a sextet of new pics both from the film itself and from the set.

We particularly like how in the image above it appears they’re going into space in a giant dustbuster, although I presume that’s because it needs some CGI to finish it off.

The pics include the likes of Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain, along with direct Christopher Nolan.

They also have a quote from McConaughey about the movie, who says, “This is the grandest adventure I think any of us will ever see on film. This is the biggest film I’ve ever been a part of. This is one of the biggest films anyone’s ever been a part of.”

That’s certainly intriguing.

What we still don’t know if a vast amount about the plot, other than that ‘Interstellar chronicles the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.’

It’s due out in November. Take a look at the new pics above and below. [Read more…]

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Circling The Rosie Project

September 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

phil-lord-and-chris-millerPhil Lord and Chris Miller are rare for having huge success in both the live-action and animation arenas. It’s allowed them to have an incredible year where The Lego Movie grossed $468 million worldwide, while 22 Jump Street made $324 million.

Now they’re plotting future moves, with Deadline reporting that they’re circling The Rosie Project.

Based on Graeme Simison’s novel, the movie is about genetics professor Don Tillman, who may have Asberger’s Disease. Unfortunately for him, he’s never had a second date, so he sets off on what he calls The Wife Project, which involves a questionnaire to find a non-smoking, non-drinking female who will fit with his lifestyle.

Unsurprisingly his attempt to find such a perfectly compliant woman goes wrong when he meets a woman named Rosie, who fits none of his criteria but may be the right match for him.

Miller and Lord recently met with the film’s screenwriters, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. They’re apparently very interested but won’t fully commit until a completed script is ready.
