Dane DeHaan & Rooney Mara Will Get Musical In Ziggy

September 13, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Dane-DeHaanAt some point any actor who can hold a tune wants to show that off on-screen – hell, even Clint Eastwood made Paint Your Wagon – and now it’s Dane DeHaan and Rooney Mara’s turn, as they’ve signed on for the musical Ziggy, according to THR.

DeHaan will play the title character, ‘a hunchback escape artist who arrives in New York during the mass-culture boom of the late 1920s and falls in love with the fiancee (Mara) of a powerful media mogul.’

Diesel Schwarze, who got his start working with Baz Luhrmann, will write and direct, and will also help develop the music alongside DeHaan, Mara and Grammy-nominated songwriter Alex Da Kid. It sounds like it’ll be rather Luhrmann-esque, as THR’s report suggests the music will be contemporary despite the Jazz Age setting of the film.

Producer Lynette Powell comments, “Ziggy is one of the most unique scripts I’ve ever read. Diesel has written an incredibly beautiful and ambitious story, and his background working under Baz Luhrmann combined with his prolific commercial work, lends itself to bringing this story to life in a visually inspired and exciting way. We are so fortunate to have Dane and Rooney onboard to develop the music with us and create something truly original, contemporary and special.”

Jessica Chastain Circling Queer Filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s English Language Debut

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jessica-chastainXavier Dolan has been making waves in the art movie world for the last few years, with many expecting him to becoming a major force in filmmaking ever since he won a prize at Cannes for his directorial debut, I Killed My Mother, which he helmed when he was only 18-years-old.

He’s made four more acclaimed films since then (Heartbeats, Laurence Anyways, Tom At The Farm and Mommy), all if which have concerned the LGBT experience in one way or another, but he’s stuck to his French-Canadian roots by avoiding the English language. That’s going to change though, as Bent reports he readying his first English-language effort and Jessica Chastain is circling to star.

She seems to be a bit of a fan of the filmmaker, as back in May after watching Dolan’s latest movie, Mommy, she tweeted, ‘Completely blown away by @XDolan. His film, MOMMY was so impressive’.

The new movie is called The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, which Dolan has described as “the story of an American movie star with everything working out for him who has a secretive correspondence with an 11 year old in London.”

Dolan tells Bent, “It was this friend of mine – a journalist – who had brought to my attention that Jessica Chastain had seen ‘Mommy’ in Cannes and had liked it and tweeted about it. I went back and scrolled down the tweets and there was this lovely tweet where Jessica was saying that she had liked ‘Mommy.'”

‘It dawned on me that I should ask Jessica about playing the ‘villain’ role in ‘John F. Donovan. There is this character of the editor-in-chief of a gossip magazine. The movie really is a satire of the business — more dramatic than humorous. And there’s this antagonistic figure that wants to ruin the lives of every star, especially that of the lead character. And I reached out to Jessica and she read the script. She loved it, and we got along like hotcakes. That’s basically it. I can already foresee all the pleasure we’ll have working together.”

Assuming it all works out with scheduling, Chastain will be on the set when shooting kicks off in Montreal, New York, Miami, England and Eastern Europe next year.

HBO Passes Over Ryan Murphy’s Lesbian-Themed Series, Open

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ryan-murphyAfter the success of The Normal Heart, HBO revealed they were reteaming with Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story) to develop a TV series with a strong lesbian-theme component, Open, which is described as “a multicharacter exploration of the complex, ever-evolving landscape of sexuality, monogamy and intimacy in relationships”.

However after making a pilot starring Anna Torv (Fringe), Scott Speedman (Felicity), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective) and Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games), HBO has decided they won’t be commissioning it as a full series.

THR suggests the reason is that HBO wanted to make major changes before moving forward, but Murphy wasn’t keen, and so the whole thing has collapsed. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo comments, “After such a triumphant collaboration with The Normal Heart, everyone felt that Open was not the right next step for all involved. However, we fully expect to work together again in the near future.”

Although Murphy may try to set it up elsewhere, at the moment it appears we’ll never get to see a full series of Open.

Tough Love Gay Web Series Seeks Funding For New Episodes

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

tough-love-web-seriesA few months ago we posted about the great gay-themed web series Tough Love. Well now it’s looking for your help, as to fund a new set of shows they’ve launched a Kickstarter, hoping to raise $18,000 in order to complete the final six episodes of Season 2.

Tough Love follows LGBT best friends and roommates Steven and Blaire as they stumble through love, friendship, and sex in New York City.

The creators comment on Kickstarter, ‘Gay characters in mainstream television are usually portrayed as one dimensional stereotypes, a half-assed attempt by networks to incorporate diversity into their programming. Gay people are as complex and varied as any other human beings, and we wanted to make a show to demonstrate that.

‘Fortunately, the interwebs and Kickstarter have made it possible to share non-traditional stories worldwide. We’ve been making Tough Love for over a year now, but we need your help to continue.Your financial contribution is not only supporting our show, it’s also proving to mainstream television that non-traditional stories are in demand.’

James Franco Is Going To Rant, Adapting Fight Club Author Chuck Palahniuk’s Book

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-francoThe always busy James Franco has decided to add another film to the movies he’s got percolating, as Lit Reactor reports he’s optioned the novel Rant, by Fight Club author Chuck Pahlaniuk.

The writer is quoted as saying, “As of last night we’ve finalized a deal for James Franco to option my novel Rant. Details about the casting, shooting and a proposed release date will be forthcoming. Hurray. After the opportunity to work with Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Sam Rockwell, I can’t imagine a more exciting actor to work with than Franco.”

While Pahlaniuk’s book are never straightforward, some have said his 2008 novel Rant is his strangest. The book takes the form of an oral biography that tells the story of Buster ‘Rant’ Casey, as pieced together by memories from friends and family members after his death. Casey is born with hyper-acute senses of smell and taste, and lives in a dystopian future where the big city he moves to is divided into two classes, the respectable Daytimers and the oppressed Nighttimers.

Casey takes up a deadly sport called ‘Party Crashing’, where players have to find cars bearing certain markers and then crash into them. He also ends up unleashing a nationwide rabies-like epidemic.

It’s not clear whether Franco plans to direct himself – it’s rather different to anything he’s decided to helme before – or whether this is just one he hopes to star in.

Divergent’s Theo James Set To Lead New Underworld Film

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Theo-JamesTheo James’ star has certainly risen since he appeared as David in 2012’s Underworld: Awakening, thanks to Divergent. However THR reports he’s going back into the world of vampires and werewolves as he’s playing a central role in the fifth Underworld movie.

Although previous reports have suggested this movie will be a reboot, it’s not completely starting over and will instead be an expansion of the current universe, but mostly revolving around new characters. There’s no info on the exact plot, although James’ David will be at the centre of the movie alongside two new female characters.

Reading between the lines of the THR report though, it’s not clear whether James is really keen to return or not, as when he signed for Underworld: Awakening as a newbie young actor, the contract included a sequel option which the producers of the movie are now using. So he’s coming back because of that (although perhaps he’s happy to star, as it would give him one of his first genuine lead roles).

Cory Goodman is writing the script, although no director is attached as yet. It will shoot next spring.

Morgan Freeman Joins Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur Remake

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

morgan-freemanMorgan Freeman is a busy man, as just a day after it was revealed he’s going to appear in Ted 2, it’s been announced that he’s joined the cast of the planned remake of Ben-Hur, according to Deadline.

Keith R. Clarke wrote the spec script for the film with Timur Bekmambetov directing, which is said to be more faithful to Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel than the multi-Oscar winning 1959 movie, which starred Charlton Heston.

The 50s version focussed on the section of the story that details the feud between the Jewish Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) and his Roman former friend Messalla (Stephen Boyd). The new film is said to further explore these characters’ formative years, when they grew up together as best friends before the Roman Empire conquered Jerusalem.

The film will also include the story of Jesus Christ, whose story is told in parallel to Ben-Hur’s. Although this was touched on in the Charlton Heston film, it’s said to be more central to the remake.

Morgan Freeman is set to play Ildarin, the man who teaches Ben-Hur to become a champion charioteer.

It’s also reported that MGM and Paramount are close to officially signing the actors who will play Ben-Hur and Mesalla. Tom Hiddleston was recently reported to be top choice for the title role, but it’s not clear if he’s still in contention.

Dominic West And Idris Elba Reteam For Pixar’s Finding Dory

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

idris-elba-dominic-westAlthough few kids are fans of The Wire, Pixar has decided it would be a good plan to get two of the stars of that show to reunite for their Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory, according to Shortlist.

Idris Elba and Dominic West have joined the voice cast, alongside returning stars such as Ellen DeGeneres (Dory), Albert Brooks (Marlin) and Gill (Willem Dafoe), as well as newbies Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy as Dory’s parents, and Ty Burrell as a character called Bailey.

Dominic West talked about his role in a recent interview with ShortList, saying “I saw Idris recently. We’re both in the sequel to Finding Nemo, so we were recording that. I’m in pretty regular contact with a lot of guys from The Wire – a lot of them are godparents to my kids, so I love them dearly.”

What he didn’t say though is who they will be playing.

Andrew Stanton is directing, with a June 2016 release date set.
