New The Homesman Trailer – Tommy Lee Jones directs Meryl Streep, Hilary Swank and more

September 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

homesman-slideTommy Lee Jones hasn’t directed many films, but when he has stepped behind the camera for the the TV movies The Good Old Boys and The Sunset Limited, as well as the movie The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, he’s come up with some interesting stuff.

Now he’s directing and starring in an old west tale called The Homesman and a new trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘When three women living on the edge of the American frontier are driven mad by harsh pioneer life, the task of saving them falls to the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank). Transporting the women by covered wagon to Iowa, she soon realizes just how daunting the journey will be, and employs a low-life drifter, George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones), to join her. The unlikely pair and the three women (Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, Sonja Richter) head east, where a waiting minister and his wife (Meryl Streep) have offered to take the women in. But the group first must traverse the harsh Nebraska Territories marked by stark beauty, psychological peril and constant threat.’

An Oscar-friendly November US release has been set. [Read more…]

The Homesman Trailer – First look at Hilary Swank & Meryl Streep in Tommy Lee Jones’ film

April 16, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tommy Lee Jones’ has shown himself to be a decent director with the TV movies The Good Old Boys and The Sunset Limited, as well as the movie The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.

He’s stepping things up a gear with The Homesman by gathering an incredibly distinguished cast, including Hilary Swank, Hailee Steinfeld, Meryl Streep, Tim Blake Nelson, James Spader, William Fichtner, and Jesse Plemons.

The period drama is about on a claim-jumper (Tommy Lee Jones) and a pioneer woman (Swank) in the 19th Century, who both escort three insane women on a bizarre journey from Nebraska to Iowa, where they must brave the harsh elements and lawless wastes along the way.

Now a trailer has arrived, although it’s not clear when it will be released. [Read more…]

James Spader Joins Tommy Lee Jones’ The Homesman

March 29, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

james-spaderTommy Lee Jones must have liked working with James Spader in Lincoln (even if they never actually shared a scene together), as he’s now cast him in his directorial outing, The Homesman, which also has Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank attached to star.

The period drama is about on a claim-jumper (Tommy Lee Jones) and a pioneer woman (Swank) in the 19th Century, who both escort three insane women on a bizarre journey from Nebraska to Iowa, where they must brave the harsh elements along the way. It’s not 100% clear who Spader will play, although THR describes the part as ‘a swindler’.

The film will be Jones’ first cinematic directorial effort since 2005’s The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, although in 2011 he helmed an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Sunset Limited for HBO. Production on The Homesman is due to start fairly soon in New Mexico.

Josh Duhamel Says You’re Not You Alongside Hilary Swank

October 31, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hilary Swank and Emmy Rossum are already set for the life-affirming drama You’re Not You, and now they’ve been joined by Transformers star Josh Duhamel, according to THR.

Rossum will portray a selfish college student who gets a new purpose in life when she takes a job caring for a woman (Hilary Swank) afflicted with ALS, aka Motor Neurone Disease. What hasn’t been revealed though is how Duhamel will factor into this, although what’s the betting he’s some sort of love interest for one of the women?

George C. Wolfe (Nights in Rodanthe) is directing from a screenplay by Shana Feste and Jordan Roberts, based on Michelle Wildgen’s debut novel. Although the cast is coming together, it isn’t clear when the film might shoot.

Emmy Rossum Joins Hilary Swank In You’re Not You

Last month Hilary Swank signed up to star in the disability drama, You’re Not You, which sounds a bit like a female version of Untouchable. Now THR reports she’s got some company in the form of Shameless star Emmy Rossum.

Rossum will portray a selfish college student who gets a new purpose in life when she takes a job caring for a woman (Hilary Swank) afflicted with ALS, aka Motor Neurone Disease. George C. Wolfe (Nights in Rodanthe) is directing from a screenplay by Shana Feste and Jordan Roberts, based on Michelle Wildgen’s debut novel.

It isn’t clear when the movie might shoot. Rossum will next be seen in Warner Bros.’ Beautiful Creatures, which arrives in cinemas early next year.

Streep And Swank Take On Tommy Lee Jones’ The Homesman

September 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Tommy Lee Jones showed he was a pretty good director with 2005’s The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, but since then he’s only helmed the TV movie The Sunset Limited. However, a few months ago he revealed plans to direct his passion project, The Homesman, and it appears he’s getting some heavyweight female talent to star, as TheWrap reports Meryl Streep and Hilary Swank are both attached to the movie.

The period drama is about on a claim-jumper (Tommy Lee Jones) and a pioneer woman (Swank) in the 19th Century, who both escort three insane women on a bizarre journey from Nebraska to Iowa, where they must brave the harsh elements along the way. It’s not 100% clear who Streep will play, but she could well be one of the mad ladies.

There’s no news on when the movie might shoot, but that may become clearer after the upcoming American Film Market, where the film will be looking for buyers.

George C. Wolfe Teams With Hilary Swank For You’re Not You

September 27, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Hilary Swank has had an odd career. She’s one of the few actresses to have won two Best Actress Oscars, but in between Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, she’s pretty much just made underwhelming movies, which to be honest she hasn’t been that good in. However she’ll be hoping You’re Not You doesn’t turn into another The Resident, New Year’s Eve, The Core Amelia or Conviction.

Now a director has come onboard this new drama, with George C. Wolfe signing up to helm You’re Not You, according to Variety. The film will be based on Michelle Wildgen’s debut novel, which on the friendship that forms between a thirty-something woman afflicted with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and her 23-year-old caretaker who is struggling to make sense of her own life, balancing a disinterest in her course load and an affair with her married professor. Swank is lined up to play the part of the immobilized invalid, and will be hoping she has as much success playing a disabled person as Francois Cluzet has in the similarly themed Untouchable.

Wolfe is best-known for his theatrical work directing the likes of Tony Kushner’s Angels In America: Millennium Approaches and the musical Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk, however he’s more recently moved into the movies with the Richard Gere flick Nights in Rodanthe.

The tearjerker will start shooting early November in LA.
