We Were Here (DVD)

December 5, 2011 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Bobbi Campbell, Cleve Jones
Director: David Weissman
Running Time: 105 mins
Certificate: E
Release Date: December 5th, 2011

Although it’s a bit of a shame We Were Here didn’t hit DVD  last week, just in time for AIDS Awareness Day on December 1st, the powerful documentary about the impact of HIV and AIDS in San Francisco in the 1980s has now been released. It’s already received plenty of plaudits, including being shortlisted for the Best Documentary Oscar.

We Were Here consists of interviews with San Franciscans who lived through the early years of the emergence of AIDS, giving testimony about its effect on them and those around them. For a younger generation for whom HIV has largely seemed like a manageable condition (whether that’s the truth or not), it’s sobering stuff. [Read more…]

Weekend Picks Up Two British Independent Film Awards

December 5, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After charming audiences for the last few weeks at cinemas and gaining loads of fans in the process, the people behind Weekend had plenty to cheer about yesterday when they won two gongs at the British Independent Film Awards.

The film, which is undoubtedly a gay classic in the making, picked up Most Promising Newcomer for the film’s star, Tom Cullen, as well as Best Achievement In Production. And considering it was only nominated in those categories, that’s a 100% success rate!

It’s a great result for a movie that many thought might get completely ignored outside Gay Film Festivals simply because of its subject matter, but which has been embraced by far more than just a core gay audience. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out as soon as possible (it’ll be on DVD and Blu-ray in March).

Growing Up With Harry Potter

December 2, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

One of the most unique things about the Harry Potter series is how it managed to keep the same group of actors throughout its entire run, and not only that, but it saw many of them grow up from kids into adults.

With the release of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 on DVD & Blu-ray, we thought it was the opportune moment to take a look exactly how Harry has aged from a little kid to a young man through the movies, and how we’ve been able to follow his journey through a truly extraordinary series of film.

Just click the first image below and then use you right cursor to see Harry grow up through the eight flicks.

Year 1 – Philosopher’s Stone
Year 2 – Chamber Of Secrets
Year 3 – Prisoner Of Azkaban

Year 4 – Goblet Of Fire

New John Carter Trailer – Taylor Kitsch enters a Martian world

November 30, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Video: John Carter trailer (MSN Exclusive)After a rather fuzzy, watermarked version arrived yesterday afternoon, the full, proper John Carter trailer has arrived, and it’s likely to get people a lot more excited that they might have thought. The first teaser made the film look a little cheesy, but this trailer is a whole new ball game, with a much more interesting, fully realised Martian world. Here’s the synopsis: ‘
John Carter tells the tale of war-weary, former military captain John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly involved in a conflict of epic proportions between the inhabitants of the planet. John Carter – the newest movie from Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton is an action adventure story set on Barsoom, the exotic and mysterious planet we know as Mars. Based on the classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan, John Carter is the story which inspired many of the most imaginative and well known Hollywood movies, past and present. Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the John Carter character, first created in the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel.’ It arrives in cinemas March 9th.

The Thing (Cinema)

November 30, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen
Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Running Time: 102 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 2nd, 2011

From the second it was announced a film was in the pipeline that was somehow related to John Carpenter’s 1982 movie, The Thing, there’s been much grumbling from fans. However this is a slightly unusual case, as while Carpenter fans have been predictably wary of anything tampering with a classic they love, the early 80s film was actually a remake itself, of the 1951 movie The Thing From Another World. As a result it’s tougher to argue here that things from the past should be preserved in aspic and never touched.

What we have here though isn’t a straight remake, but (as the movie studio insists on calling it) a ‘prelude’ to the Kurt Russell movie. Quite why they gave it the exact same name as the other film is a bit of a mystery then, but it just goes to show some of the muddle-headed business-butting-up-against-entertainment thinking that went into the new The Thing. Daniel Radcliffe May Play Gay Poet Allen Ginsberg

November 30, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Although it doesn’t look like anything’s completely firmed up yet, it appears Daniel Radcliffe is eyeing a role as famed (and famously gay) beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, according to Twitch. The film is a thriller that speculated around events involving beat generation legends Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S Burroughs.

They were all brought together by Columbia University student Lucien Carr, who was implicated in (and served time for) the murder of David Kammerer, who was found dead in Hudson River in 1944. Carr claimed the death was an accident after Kammerer made an unwanted sexual advance, although they had known each other  for several years (and it has been claimed they were lovers). The events surrounding the death are said to have had a massive impact on the beat circle, and tempered the idealism they had felt beforehand.

When the film was first announced in 2009, Chris Evans, Jesse Eisenberg and Ben Whishaw were attached to play Kerouac, Ginsberg and Carr, respectively. It’s unknown if Evans or Whishaw are still involved at all, but it seems Radcliffe has taken over Eisenberg’s part. If Daniel does take on the gay poet, he’ll follow in the footsteps of James Franco, who played Ginsberg in Howl.

John Krokidas will direct with hopes that shooting will start next summer.

The Lucky One Poster – Just imagine yourself snogging Zac Efron

November 29, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Zac Efron’s still busy trying to transition from teen sensation to grown up movie star, and whether he eventually succeeds or not, he’s certainly going to be very pretty while he tries. So that’s good news for us!

Now the first poster for his new romantic movie The Lucky One has appeared, and it’s a great one for Efron fans, as you can just imagine yourself in the place of Taylor Schilling. In fact, we’ve helped you out with that below!

Underneath our pretending-to-snog-Efron efforts you can watch the first featurette about the Nicholas Sparks adaptation, which sees Zac as a soldier who, after surviving the war in Iraq, travels to North Carolina to find the woman he believes was his good luck charm. It’ll be in cinemas in the UK on May 4th, 2012 (the April 20th date on the poster is the US release).

It’s Time – Insanely cute gay marriage short film goes viral

November 28, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Over the weekend this short film/ad from the Aussie organisation Get Up! has been going viral all over the place, and if you watch it, you’ll understand why. I’d incredibly cute, has a great message advocating gay marriage and might even give you a lump in your throat by the end, and all that in just under two minutes!

Let’s just hope the right people see this short and it doesn’t just end up preaching to the converted, as it’s exactly what those who are against gay marriage need to see. Nearly all the arguments against same sex knot tying seem predicated on the idea gays aren’t quite the same as other human beings and their thoughts, feelings and emotions are as deep or valid as everyone else, which is a fallacy this short beautifully turns upside-down.

Six New John Carter Pics Emerge

November 26, 2011 By Movie Muser Leave a Comment

Six new images have debuted from John Carter (via SFX), as Disney ramps up the hype in the hope of making the movie a must see before its debut next March 9th. The pics give us a further insight into the alien world, which does seem to be channeling The Phantom Menace. Hopefully the film will look a little more like its own beast when a new trailer arrived on December 1st. Until then enjoy the Martian creatures and Taylor Kitsch as John Carter showing off his buffness.

Orange BAFTA Rising Star Longlist Announced – Vote For Your Sexiest!

November 25, 2011 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Ok, ok, we know, the Orange BAFTA Rising Star Award isn’t about who’s the sexiest, it’s about honouring an up and coming young actor whose somewhat broken through in the last 12 months. Let’s face it though, they’re all hotties, and as this award is open to the public vote, you can pretty much guarantee that most of the votes won’t be given on pure acting merit (hence the impressive wooden Kristen Stewart winning a couple of years ago).

Of course, if you do decide to head over to the Orange Wednesday’s Rising Star Award site to say who you want to win, we recommend going for talent, but if you end up ticking Chris Hemsworth’s box just because he’s cute, nobody is going to know (I’m thinking of going fo Jessica Chastain, who put in remarkable performances in the likes of The Help and The Tree Of Life).

The longlist has been announced, and you can see all the entrants in our gallery below (click the pics to make them bigger). The first round of voting is now open, which will be used to whittle it down to a final five, who’ll be announced on January 11th. Orange customers will then be able to vote, and the winner will get their gong at the BAFTA Film Awards in February.
