Russia Rates Beauty & the Beast As Being For Adults Only, Due To Gay Character

March 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

You would think Russia had more important things to worry about than the recently revealed, “Nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie”, that director Bill Condon says will occur in the upcoming live-action Beauty & The Beast. However, almost the moment the news broke, politicians in Russia started frothing at the mouth about gay propaganda.

For example, MP Vitaly Milonov called for a ban – and he seemed as upset about the human-buffalo romance as he was about the gay moment – saying that the film (which he hasn’t seen) contained “perverted sexual relations” and would contravene the Russian law banning, “gay propaganda against minors”.

He hasn’t quite got his wish, but the Russian Ministry Of Culture has decided that the Disney fairytale is evil enough to give it a 16+ rating, the second highest rating, meaning it’s been deemed suitable only for those over 16.

Disney isn’t likely to be weeping too much though, as while they had the highest grossing movie in Russia last year, Zootopia, it still only made £39 million in the country. As Beauty & The Beast is currently tracking for a gargantuan $120 million opening just in the US, if a bit of homophobia affects it in Russia, it shouldn’t matter too much. The film will be out on March 17th.

Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep & Steven Spielberg Teaming For Pentagon Papers Movie, The Post

March 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

She’s one of the most storied actresses in film history, but Meryl Streep has never appeared on-screen in a Steven Spielberg movie. They have worked together, as Streep voiced one of the mechas in Spielberg’s AI, but it’s only now that she’s planning to get in front of the director’s lens, for the Post.

The other star lined up is someone Spielberg has worked with numerous times before, Tom Hanks, who’s also signed up to take on this look at the Pentagon Papers scandal, according to Deadline.

The movie will be based on Liz Hannah’s spec script, which recently landed one of the top spots on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. It’s ‘a drama about the Washington Post’s role in exposing the Pentagon Papers in 1971, and how the Post’s editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Kay Graham challenged the federal government over their right to publish them.’

The Pentagon Papers was a Top Secret report commissioned to look at what was happening in the Vietnam War. It spoke of a dramatic escalation that was being hidden from the public, and much of its information seemed to support the growing idea that the war was unwinnable. After it was leaked to the Washington Post, the newspaper ended up in a legal battle with the government over whether they could publish more of what they’d learned from the report. At a time when the current US President is at war with the media and angry about leaks, this look at freedom of the press, the First Amendment and government lies could end up being extremely timely.

Margot Robbie Will Be Maid Marian In An Alternate Take On Robin Hood

March 7, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

If you grew up in the UK in the 1980s you’ll probably remember Maid Marian & Her Merry Men, where it was Marian who was the brainy hero robbing from the rich to give to the poor, while Robin Hood was a bit of a dim and fey fellow, even if he ending up getting all the credit. It now seems Hollywood is keen on a similar idea, as THR reports that Sony has purchased Pete Barry’s spec script, Marian, which already has Margot Robbie attached to star.

It won’t be quite the same as Maid Marian & Her Merry Men though, as ‘Marian unfolds after the death of Robin Hood, the love of her life. The titular maiden then picks up his cause to lead her people into a pivotal war that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom, but also see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.’

The film is one of several Robin Hood inspired tales Hollywood is making at the moment, with an origin story starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx and Jamie Dornan due for release in early 2018, and visual effects supervisor Hasraf ‘HaZ’ Dulull due to shoot a futuristic, sci-fi version later this year.

Kings, Queens & In-Betweens (US VoD Review) – Inside the surprisingly bright LGBT drag world of Ohio

March 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Various
Director: Gabrielle Burton
Running Time: 90 mins
Certificate: NR
Release Date: March 7th 2017 (US)

Who knew that Columbus, Ohio was a hotbed of drag? Well, I expect a lot of the LGBT residents of the city knew, but it’ll come as a surprise to most of the rest of us. Director Gabrielle Burton delves deep into that world in her documentary, Kings, Queens & In-Betweens.

Across its 90-minutes the film attempts to highlight the diversity of the drag world, which isn’t just about gay men going on stage dressed as caricatured women. There are also drag kings, some identifying as women, some men and others living between the two genders. Likewise, while most of the drag queens are happy to pull off the costume and makeup, and live as men for the rest of their lives, the documentary introduces us to at least one for whom drag became an outlet until they transitioned to living as a woman full-time. Josh Gad Wishes His Beauty & The Beast Character Hadn’t Been Outed, But Knows It’s Important

March 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

A couple of days ago, it was revealed by Beauty & The Beast director Bill Condon that Gaston’s acolyte, LeFou, would have a ‘nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.’ That set off a lot of interest, with many praising Disney, while a few, including an Alabama drive-in that’s refusing to screen the movie, have decried it.

However, it turns out that Josh Gad, plays LeFou, didn’t know Condon was going to talk about the moment before the film was released. When asked about it by USA Today, he said, “I haven’t seen anything (about that), tell me more.”

He added, “I hope that it’s a surprise to audiences to some extent, although I don’t think it is anymore…. I’m honored to have that moment as part of my character’s arc. What was most important to me was taking a character that is wonderful and so iconic, but is defined by cartoon conceits in the (original) movie… and expanding on that, giving him dimension, making him human.”

He spoke more at the film’s premiere, with Variety reporting him saying, “As subtle as it is, I do think it’s going to be effective and I do think it’s important.”

Condon also expanded on his thoughts about making LeFou gay in the movie, saying, “It was something we developed as a part of a lot of things about LeFou. I’m excited for the moment that he has. I don’t want to give too much away because I think it’s part of a whole celebration of love, but Disney’s been great about it. That’s the thing; the whole ethic of that company is inclusion.”

Indian Censor Board Bans Gay-Themed Movie For ‘Glorifying’ Homosexual Relationships

March 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Being LGBT in India is complicated, with gay sex having been legalised and then recriminalised in recent years. Societal attitudes towards homosexuality are becoming more more welcoming in some areas, while being hardened in others.

However, in recent weeks it’s looked like the country’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is becoming increasingly conservative. Having recently banned the acclaimed feminist movie, Lipstick Under My Burkha, with one of the reasons cited being that it was too ‘lady-oriented’, it’s now decided not to give a certificate to the gay-themed Ka Bodyscapes, according to TheWire.

The movie’s director Jayan Cherian wrote on Facebook, “It’s official, Mr. Pahlaj Nihalani [chairman of the CBFC] put the final nail in my coffin!” The letter Cherian received from the Board refused the movie a certificate for ‘glorifying’ gay relationships, while saying it shows ‘vulgarity’ by showing Hinduism in a ‘derogatory’ fashion and that it also shouldn’t be allowed for depicting a ‘female Muslim character masturbating’.

Ka Bodyscapes folows, ‘Haris, a gay painter; Vishnu, a rural kabaddi player, and their friend Sia, an activist who refuse to conform to dominant norms of femininity, struggle to find space and happiness in a conservative Indian City.’

The film has been fighting for a certificate since last April, but Nihalani is the last resort for the film, and with his refusal, it’s now unlikely the movie will ever be legally screened in India.

Take A Look At Former Disney Star Ross Lynch As Gay Serial Killer, Jeffrey Dahmer

March 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Ross Lynch is perhaps best known for appearing in the hit Disney channel movie, Teen Beach Party, and the same channel’s series Austin & Ally, but now he’s got a very different role, as he’s playing infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in My Friend Dahmer. Now the first pic of Lynch in character has arrived, via Ross’s Instagram.

Marc Meyers is directing the movie, based on Derf Backderf’s critically acclaimed graphic novel. It’s set in 70s, following Dahmer before he became a killer.

Dahmer is of course one of the most famous serial killers in history, who killed at least 17 people, most of whom he’d picked up at Milwaukee gay bars. The fact that he kept body parts, ate parts of them and had sex with their corpses ensured he stood out from nearly all other killers. He said what he really wanted was to create a kind of zombie so that the person would never leave him, and managed to kill several of his victims while injecting things into their brains as part of his experimentation. He also defied the stereotypical image of a monster, as Dahmer was quite handsome and most people thought he was pretty normal until it was discovered what he was really doing. He was killed in prison by another inmate in 1994.

His early life should make for an interesting film, as he killed animals as a teen, and committed his first murder while he was still living at home.

My Friend Dahmer is due to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

First Look At Emily Blunt Turning Practically Perfect Nanny In Mary Poppins Returns

March 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As well as all sorts of live-action reimaginings of its animated classics as live-action movies, Disney is also in the process of bringing one of its greatest live-action films back to the big screen with a sequel to Mary Poppins. That follow-up, Mary Poppins Returns, is now filming, and the first image of Emily Blunt taking on the role made famous by Julie Andrews has been released.

Although we’re only looking at her from the back, she does seem a good fit for the practically perfect nanny.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Directed and produced by Rob Marshall, “Mary Poppins Returns” also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer and Julie Walters with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep. The film, which introduces three new Banks children, played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson, also features Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury. The film is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep). The film is produced by Marshall, John DeLuca and Marc Platt. The screenplay is by David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman writing all new songs and Shaiman composing an original score.

‘“Mary Poppins Returns” will be released in the UK on December 2018.’

The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby On For Major Role In Mission: Impossible 6

March 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

At one point it seemed like audiences were happy to see anything with Tom Cruise in it, but in recent years the only surefire hits he’s had are with the Mission: Impossible franchise. A couple of films ago, he was supposedly leaving the series behind, but then decided to stick around when several of his others films bombed, but people still couldn’t get enough of him as Ethan Hunt.

Now they’re busy putting together the sixth Mission: Impossible, which has just added Vanessa Kirby, best known for playing Princess Margaret in The Crown, to the cast. It’s not known exactly who she will play, but Variety suggests it’s a big role, in the same scale as Rebecca Ferguson’s part in Rogue Nation.

Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote and directed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is returning to do the same duties on the latest film. It’s due to start shooting next month, for release July 2018.

Jared Leto Reportedly Circling Disney’s Tron Reboot

March 4, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With Marvel, Pixar, its animated films and its live-action versions of classic animations, Disney has had huge amounts of success in the past few years. It’s also had some bombs, where films were hyped to the hilt and then underperformed at the box office. That includes John Carter, The Lone Ranger and Tron: Legacy.

Although the last of those wasn’t a complete failure (it made around $400 million), it certainly didn’t click with audiences in the way Disney had hoped, as they were planning TV series and an ongoing movie franchise, which quietly got pushed to one side. However the studio hasn’t given up on Tron, and has been working on a new movie set in that world.

Now it looks like they’re starting to move forward, as THR reports that Jared Leto is circling the movie. The film is a bit of a reboot, as it won’t be a full-on sequel to Tron: Legacy, but will use some of the ideas from the third Tron movie that Disney previously commissioned a script for.

It’s still early days as no director is attached and a writer hasn’t been hired yet sort out the script. However, they’re hoping to get Leto onboard and build the film around him as a star vehicle.
