orange-is-the-new-black-season-4Perhaps more than any other series, Orange Is The New Black that proved streaming services could not just compete with the major TV networks but better many of them. The show is heading into Season 4, and the trailer has now arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Jenji Kohan, the creator of “Weeds”, Orange is the New Black is a thought-provoking, funny and evocative show about life in a women’s prison. Based on the best-selling memoir by Piper Kerman, the newest season of Orange delves into the racial and economic tensions that run rampant in the halls of Litchfield. Overrun with new inmates and overseen by inexperienced guards, the prison undergoes an unprecedented culture war.’

Swiss Army Man Red Band Trailer – Take a look at Daniel Radcliffe’s farting corpse’s boner compass!

May 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

swiss-army-man-daniel-radcliffeSwiss Army Man is a film first, as it’s almost certainly the only movie in history that almost immediately become knows as the ‘farting corpse movie’. It’s also resulted in the most unlikely headline for a post I think I’ve ever written. The first trailer gave us a taste of just how bizarre and Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano movie was, and now that’s been amplified with a Red Band trailer.

It also gives us our first look at Radcliffe’s much talked about boner compass!

The film follows a castaway man (Dano), who has reached the end of his tether living alone when a corpse (Radcliffe) washes up on the island. The movie charts the growing relationship between the man and flatulent dead guy, which as you’ll see below, gets increasingly surreal and rather romantic.

Swiss Army Man is apparently a real audience divider, but it certainly looks intriguing. Expect to see it in cinemas later this year. And in case you’re wondering the scene right at the end is one that got many people talking, where Radcliffe is ridden like a jet-ski, powered by his farts! [Read more…]

Ridley Scott Will Take On The Western, Wraiths of the Broken Land

May 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ridley-scottWhile Ridley Scott signing on to direct a movie doesn’t always mean he’ll actually end up behind the camera – he likes to have a lot of film in development, only some of which he ends up making – Variety reports that he’s set to helm Fox’s western, Wraiths of the Broken Land.

There is some reason to think he may well make it though, as the project will reteam him with The Martian writer Drew Goddard, based on the acclaimed novel by S. Craig Zahler. The book ‘is set in Mexico around 1900 with two sisters forced into prostitution at a gentlemen’s club. The sisters’ two brothers and their father attempt to rescue them through their outlaw gang which also includes a former slave, an Indian and a brutal gunman (or “wraith”) who is the tactical leader.’

Scott is directing Alien: Covenant at the moment, but Wraiths of the Broken Land will be in the mix after he’s finished with that movie.

Yoga Hosers Trailer – Kevin Smith gets crazy with Johnny Depp, Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp

May 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

yoga-hoser-slideKevin Smith’s Yoga Hosers debuted to mixed reviews at Sundance, and now we get to see why, as it looks absolutely crazy. The first trailer has arrived, which show this is Smith at his most nuts.

Here’s the synopsis from Sundance: ‘Colleen and Colleen are BFFs AF. Manitoba is where they go to school together, do yoga together, play in a band together, and work together at a boring convenience store. Life is whatevs, but also on fleek. That’s kinda what being 15 and a half is all about. #RealTalk

‘So when two older guys invite the Colleens to a senior party, the girls are determined to go no matter what—even if that “what” is a terrible, secret evil that threatens to destroy everything decent and polite about Canada. Can Colleen and Colleen save the day and go viral? Will those senior boys prove squad-worthy?’

Harley Quinn Smith, Lily-Rose Depp, Johnny Depp, Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne, Genesis Rodriguez, Adam Brody, Justin Long star. It’ll be out in the US in July. [Read more…]

Gael Garcia Bernal Back On To Be A Futuristic Zorro

May 10, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gael-garcia-bernalBack in 2012 Gael Garcia Bernal was attached to the title role in Zorro Reborn, a futuristic take on the classic sword-swishing character, which had Ricardo de Monteuil loosely set to direct. However, the movie never happened and got trapped in development hell. However, the producers didn’t give up on the idea.

Now they’re back with Z, described as being completely different to Zorro Reborn but still taking the swashbuckler to the future. And once more, Bernal is attached to star, according to Deadline.

Jonás Cuarón (son of Alfonso), who helmed Bernal in the upcoming Desierto will direct. Cuaron also wrote the script for the movie, which is said to be set in the near future (so probably different to the full-on post-apocalyptic setting on Zorro Reborn. The plan is to shoot this autumn at Pinewood Dominican Republic studios.

Darren Criss To Lead Hedwig And The Angry Inch On Its US Tour

May 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

darren-criss-hedwigFollowing on from it’s incredibly successful run on Broadway, Hedwig And The Angry Inch is heading out on the road for a US tour. It’s been announced that one of the people who played the title role in New York will be back for the first two stops in LA & San Francisco – Darren Criss.

The former Glee star played Hedwig from April to July last year, and will now be back when the show hits San Francisco from October 4th to 30th and LA from November 1st to 27th. Indeed he’ll be having a bit of a musicals year, as he’s also set to play Prince Eric in Disney’s The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl next month. It’s certainly two very different roles for the actor.

It’s not known who will play Hedwig after San Franciso and LA. The Broadway production swapped the person in the lead role every 12 weeks or so (starting with Neil Patrick Harris’ Tony-winning turn, before the likes of Andrew Rannell, Michael C. Hall, Criss, Taye Diggs and the show’s creator, John Cameron Mitchell, took over), and the tour may do the same every couple of stops.

Hedwig is the show’s East German title character, who was left with an angry inch after a botched sex change operation that she had in order to get into the US with her American GI lover. Hedwig then started dating young Tommy Gnosis, who left her behind when he took her music and became a rock star – leaving her understandably bitter (but still very funny).

Alan Cumming to Star in New LGBT Film, After Louie, Which Is Looking For Your Help

May 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

alan-cummingIt’s been announced that bisexual actor and Tony winner Alan Cumming is attached to star in a new LGBT-themed movie from lifelong activist and artist, Vincent Gagliostro, who has been sited by New York Magazine as one of the six most influential players in the gay community during the 80s and 90s AIDS crisis.

However, to get it to the screen it needs your help, as a Kickstarter is now running through June 2nd, in the hope of raising $72,500. After Louie explores the contradictions of modern gay life and history through Sam (Cumming), a man desperate to understand how he and his community got to where they are today. The movie also Justin Vivian Bond (Shortbus, Kiki and Herb: Live at the Knitting Factory), Zachary Booth (Damages, Keep The Lights On), David Drake (The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me), and NYC icon, Joey Arias.

Many important figure-heads in the NYC artistic community are speaking up for the film, including author and playwright, Larry Kramer who says, “this move needs to be made.” Pulitzer Prize-Winning author Michael Cunningham comments, “Vincent Gagliostro is not only enormously gifted, he’s also been a radical, fearless and compassionate voice for decades, speaking for countless people whose stories would otherwise go undeard.”

Here’s the synopsis: ‘After Louie explores the contradictions of modern gay life and history through Sam (ALAN CUMMING), a man desperate to understand how he and his community got to where they are today. As an AIDS activist and member of ACT UP in the 1980s and 90s, Sam witnessed the deaths of too many friends and lovers. Battle-wounded and struggling with survivor’s guilt, Sam now resents the complacency of his former comrades and derides what he sees as the younger generation’s indifference to the politics of sex, and of death.

‘An unexpected intimacy with a much younger man, Braeden (ZACHARY BOOTH), challenges Sam’s understanding of contemporary gay life. Through this unconventional romance, he is forced to deal with the trauma that so informs his past, their present, and an unknown future.’

Vincent Gagliostro comments, “My film After Louie is a portrait of what happened to us — the generation who endured the AIDS epidemic, a generation whose shared history continues to haunt us. In confronting the end of a traumatic era and provoking a conversation between generations, I dare us to dream of a new and vibrant future, again. After Louie will be a testament to the joys of the fully lived life and the inseparability of art and living.”

If you want to help get the movie made, watch the crowdfunding video below and then head over to Kickstarter. [Read more…]

Xena Co-Creator Reveals Why The Warrior Princess & Gabrielle Never Became A Couple

May 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

xena-gabrielleEver since it started on TV, Xena: Warrior Princess has been an LGBT favourite, with many feeling that the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle was a lesbian one, although the show never actually came out and explicitly said that. However, it was definitely there, with the show increasingly adding hints, jokes and innuendo, even including a ‘kiss’ between the characters towards the end, which saved Gabrielle’s life.

But why didn’t they ever actually become a couple on-screen (although by the end even the two actresses involved thought the two were almost definitely intimate)? Co-creator Robert Tapert has been talking about that, although his reasoning seems a little bit like an excuse. He told EW, “The name Xena means ‘stranger’. She felt she was irredeemable. That friendship between Xena and Gabrielle transmitted some message of self-worth, deservedness, and honor to people who felt very marginalized, so it had a lot of resonance in the gay community… We didn’t really ever want to get them 100 percent together for a very strange reason. There was Ares [Kevin Smith], God of War, who we loved. We did not want to give up the hold that character had over Xena and the enjoyment we had with telling stories of Xena and Ares. So as much as we liked that Xena and Gabrielle were two people who were the best of friends, and perhaps intimate friends, we never wanted to give up Ares.”

The real reason however is more likely the TV landscape in the 1990s, when LGBT characters were rarer and almost never the main characters. Tapert admits that, “Before we started shooting Xena, we shot the material that we were going to use to create the opening title sequences with. The studio was so concerned that it would be perceived as a lesbian show that they would not allow us to have Xena and Gabrielle in the same frame of the opening titles.”

Xena actress Lucy Lawless also thinks things may have been different if the show was made today, saying, “For the LGBT community to see themselves on TV was certainly new in the ’90s. My goodness, how things have changed from Xena subtext to I Am Cait. That’s an incredible evolution in 20 years, and I think it’s a really healthy one.”

There is currently a reboot of Xena in development at NBC, with suggestions already that it’s likely to include openly LGBT characters. However, whether that includes Xena herself remains to be seen.

Sarah Paulson Reveals She Had Career Nerves After Kissing Her Girlfriend At The Tonys

May 8, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

sarah-paulsonWe may have come a long way in terms of LGBT acceptance in the West, but there’s no doubt there are still major issues, not least of which are sometimes legitimate fears over whether being open about your sexuality will affect your career. And when you’re an actor just starting to find media success, it’s not too surprising you’d worry whether it would make a difference.

American Horror Story’s Sarah Paulson has admitted she was a little nervous after kissing her then girlfriend, Cherry Jones, at the 2005 Tony Awards, after Jones won the Best Actress in a Play award for playing Sister Aloysius in Doubt. At the time, Paulson had just booked her first high profile TV role, in Studio 60 On Sunset Strip, and wondered whether the spontaneous smooch would have repercussions for that.

She tells NOTOFU (via GSN), “I was just doing what one would do when a person they love has just won a big award. What am I gonna do, pat her on the back and say, ‘Good job, dude?’ It didn’t occur to me to do anything but what I did.”

However, she says it did give her concerns, which weren’t allayed until she got to the Studio 60 sets and the show’s creator, Aaron Sorking, assured her that she would, ‘never have anything to worry about.’

Paulson says, “It was the biggest exhale of my life. I didn’t realize how anxious about it I had been until he said that.”

She’s also keen to say people shouldn’t have to feel the way she did, adding, “I believe that everyone should be allowed to speak their truth and just say what they want to say and show the world who they are. You should be able to love whomever you fucking well please.

Bisexual Paulson, split with Jones not too long after the Tonys and is currently a relationship with Emmy Award-winning actress Holland Taylor (Two and a Half Men). While Studio 60 flopped (despite being a great show), Paulson has since found great success in American Horror Story and film roles in the likes of 12 Years A Slave and Carol. She recently earned rave reviews as Marcia Clarke in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
